SIX WAYS ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITIES

Generally speaking; many of the people moving into active adult communities are techsavvy, active, hardworking, independent thinkers. So how does this correspond with traditional notions of active adult communities? In short, it doesn’t very well since programming and activities offered in many active adult communities is evolving based on the needs and wants of its residents. People are looking at things differently, which means active adult communities need to start looking at things differently, too. With that in mind, here are six ways 55 and better communities are evolving so they can best serve the needs and interests of today’s residents. 1. CREATING A NEW DEFINITION FOR “ACTIVE.”
Originally, active adult communities were built in warm climates in the suburbs, typically around golf courses. This cookie-cutter approach no longer fits the diversity of thinking and attitudes that defines today’s residents. Today, active adult communities are created in urban environments and rural settings alike – and the golf

course centerpiece concept has been altered by a focus on facilities that enable a broader range of activities, such as seminars, discussion groups, education and more. Outdoors, there’s a greater emphasis on amenities that bring people together socially, like patios, BBQs and park settings. 2. PUTTING HEALTH FIRST.
Many of the newer members in active adult communities are focused on their personal health and wellness. This is a group of Americans who have spent a lifetime focusing on self-improvement – physical, mental and spiritual. Today’s active adult communities reflect that commitment, offering wellness seminars, yoga and meditation classes, educational events and much more. 3. KNOWING YOUR MARKET.
Describing an entire generation with a single set of characteristics can prevent you from truly understanding your local active adult community. Different regions of the country – and even rural versus urban markets within the same region – can include individuals who fit the same age profiles, yet differ greatly in what they consider good living. The answer? Research.
Get to know your community. Talk to community leaders. Find out what people are interested in, then tailor your offerings accordingly. It might even help to speak to current residents about what their non-resident friends think about your community... and about what activities you can provide that would make it more appealing. The community leadership needs to keep their fingers on the pulse of specific markets, they can develop lifestyle plans to fit the data they obtain. 4. STAYING FLEXIBLE.
Today’s communities have a great deal of diversity; so many active adult communities find that the overall interests of their residents are constantly evolving. Creating lifestyle plans that are nimble and adaptable are key to keeping your offerings relevant. For example, that could mean ensuring your physical amenity space can easily transform from, say, a meditation room to an educational seminar room to a festive setting for casino night. 5. BUILDING A BRAND.
So what does a brand have to do with your community? Well, consider this: a real brand is more than just a
logo or some advertisements. Think of the brands you know and love – maybe Apple, maybe Amazon, or any others – but the key is you love the brand because you feel connected to it. Brands are what give companies humanity. Make sure your community has one, and that it resonates with your residents. When people love where they live, they’re more likely to provide suggestions and input that will help it continue to improve and grow –and they are more inclined to promote their community to potential homebuyers. 6. TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING.
Creating meaningful experiences for community residents takes out-of-thebox thinking and getting there requires training. Good community management means that leaders actively train their team members so they can provide the kind of insight and direction necessary to create thriving active adult communities in this new era. Beyond that, they also focus on customer service skills designed to help relate to the contemporary, discerning adults who typically comprise this emerging demographic in the community.

Congratulations to
Rafael (Rafa) Baez for Winning Assistant Golf Course Superintendent of the Year
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
With over 300 golf courses in the State of Arizona, it is a tremendous accomplishment to be chosen as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent of the Year. Our own Rafa Baez, from Desert Springs, was chosen as such by the Cactus & Pine Golf Course Superintendents Association last month. Rafa came to Sun City Grand about 5 years ago to work alongside his mentor and coach, Jeff Pritchard at Desert Springs. Jeff and Rafa had already worked together off and on for many years at several distinguished golf properties. Rafa’s experience began in the mid 80’s when he was hired for the construction of Moreno Valley Ranch, a Pete Dye course, in Southern California. He worked under one of Jeff’s “disciples”, Steve Bruton, where he quickly learned what it takes to make a course special. Seven years later he came to the Apache course at Desert Mountain 10
when Jeff hired Steve to assist in the construction and grow-in of that course. Steve left but Rafa stayed on until Steve was hired to oversee construction and grow-in of the Ocean Trails Course near Long Beach, California. Steve left there to go to Pelican Hills and at the same time Jeff was building courses in Simi Valley, California and hired Rafa to be a Foreman and help out with construction and grow-in. Jeff later took a position at Silverleaf in Scottsdale and Rafa expressed a desire to come back to Arizona to join Jeff and he became the Foreman there. Ten years later Jeff and Rafa connected again when Jeff was chosen to assist in the construction and grow-in of Sewailo in Tucson, this time as the Assistant Superintendent. Soon after, Rafa went to Black Stone as the 2nd Assistant. Shortly after Jeff accepted his position at Sun City Grand the Assistant Superintendent at Desert Springs retired and Rafa applied and was awarded the position. Throughout Rafa’s golf history he has been exposed to some very high maintenance standards and has accepted the challenge to produce great conditions no matter what his responsibilities were. Rafa has the respect of everyone in our organization because of his commitment to Desert Springs and the desire to provide the best for our residents – he has tremendous pride. Although he
is on salary you will see him many afternoons working late to accomplish our goals without being asked. The level of conditioning of Desert Springs has improved markedly under his supervision. A harder working, more dedicated person would be very hard to come by. The Golf Management Team could not be more thrilled for Rafa’s success. When you see Rafa at work on the course, please congratulate him and thank him for all his efforts.

HOT SUMMER WALKING TIPS Allison Adams Fitness Manager
As the energy of the community starts to slow with many of your neighbors returning to homes north, or simply due to the encroaching summer heat, SCG fitness encourages you to stay active, and do it safely. Why not enjoy the scenery of our beautiful community while exercising better health, and meeting your neighbors? In the heat of the Arizona summer, we suggest walking early in the day, before 8:00AM or after 7:00PM, to reduce the severity of the sun. At Sun City Grand we offer the indoor walking track for your comfort and convenience. We can’t say it enough; hydrate,
hydrate, hydrate. Water is your best friend living in Arizona; especially when active. You may have read or heard experts recommend walking 10,000 steps per day (5 miles). Lower blood pressure and glucose levels have been associated with this number but it is not necessary to walk 10,000 steps daily to see other health benefits such as improved circulation, better balance, a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, lower weight, improved endurance, enhanced bone strength, and lower insulin sensitivity, thereby reducing the risk and/or symptoms of diabetes. Here’s an interesting tidbit from Dr. Kenneth Cooper, one of the originators of aerobic exercise research, author of the 1968 best seller, “Aerobics” and CEO of the Cooper Institute. “The best predictor of longevity at age 80 is how fast you can walk. If you can walk a mile in 17 minutes, at age 80, there is an 84% chance you will live another 10 years”. At age 87, Dr. Cooper is walking a 16 minute mile.

**When at the pools, some of you may be able to see the footprint outlines on the deck created when individuals use sunscreen spray to cover their feet. The layer of spray adheres to the decking surface, picking up dirt that you see. This is one of the causes of repainting the deck annually. You may want to use the grass instead to apply spray on sunscreen or place a towel under your feet.

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED A Funny Thing Happened is a new book written by a Sun City Grand resident – Carl Otte. The book was meant to be an epistle about the funny or gruesome things we do to each other—as witnessed by his ten years in general practice and 28 years as an emergency physician. Once he started to write, he realized that there was almost as much funny in growing up and later raising four daughters and one wife, that the book needed to be expanded to a memoir—which it was. Pages 20 and 21: Soon after learning to walk. I started running away from home. This would cause an Amber Alert now, but no one came to get me, and I always returned home under my own power. I distinctly remember running away one day, intending to go to Uncle Otto’s, about two miles to the southwest of home. I got to the bottom of their long driveway, lost my nerve, and ran back home. The folks asked where I had gone, and I got a whipping for lying. They didn’t think I had been gone long enough to have made it that far. Page 139: Presidents Visit: President Nixon’s visit to Kansas City caused some extra precautions to be taken at the hospital. We were selected as the receiving facility if something happened to him. The same arrangements must be made for any presidential visit. I know it was done in other ERs where I have worked while the president was in town. The Secret Service or FBI came several days ahead and did background checks on those scheduled to be on duty during the time the president was in town. A certain number of units of compatible blood type were to be available in the building. The trauma room was required to be large enough to hold the president and the seven people who were to be with him at all times—including one carrying “the football” which was the briefcase carrying the launch codes for our defense system. Our trauma room did not seem to meet those space requirements, but there was an adjoining room which was deemed satisfactory. Fortunately, the president did not need our services during that visit.

The update of Sun City Grand's Bylaws has been approved by you, the homeowners! The Consent Process has always been to update and improve two documents...the Bylaws and the CC&Rs. These two documents have different requirements for approval. The Bylaws require 51% of all homeowners (5,000); the CC&Rs require 67% of all homeowners (6,568).

The new ownership of the track in Prescott Valley has changed its name to Arizona Downs, which was the name of a former racetrack in Phoenix that opened in 1951 at one site and later ran its annual race meetings by leasing Turf Paradise before it ceased operations in 1985.

The facility was bought for $3.22 million out of bankruptcy court in January by J&J Equine Enterprises LLC, an entity formed by brothers and Phoenix-based JACOR Partners principals Tom, Dave, and Mike Auther and their partner Joe Jackson, along with longtime racing executive Corey Johnsen. "First of all we would like to thank the Herbeveaux family for allowing us to use the name," said Johnsen, referencing the owners and operators of the original Arizona Downs. "We want to be known as Arizona's racetrack that benefits horsemen throughout the state. so horses and all the jobs they create stay in the state. A stronger circuit helps everyone in the industry—the breeders, horse owners, trainers, jockeys and all the related professions it takes to get a horse to the races." The new Arizona Downs will re-open to the public in July for simulcasting. Live racing is scheduled to begin in 2019, with a meet running from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Plans call for offtrack wagering facilities in sports bars and restaurants throughout the state. Ann McGovern, Arizona Downs' general manager, has been overseeing more than $2 million in improvements to the facility. The general contractor is Midwest Construction, which has handled major renovation projects at Kentucky Downs, Remington Park, and Lone Star Park. CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE Jesus walked to his crucifixion, shared communion by the Sea of Galilee, visited the Holocaust Museum and shared a Shabbat meal in a Jewish home, with some even baptized in the River Jordan. All left Israel with stronger friendships and a better appreciation for the politics and religions of the area. “It was an amazing trip,” added Rev. Klumpenhower.

or most of us, life has defining moments that are never forgotten. Embedded in the heart, they are cherished, poignant memories. For 27 people, including residents from The Colonnade, Grandview Terrace and La Loma Village, those defining moments came during a recent trip to Israel. The Sun Health Communities’ residents, staff and companions arrived in the Holy Land for a 12-day tour. Their first stop was the modern beachside city of Tel Aviv. The group traversed Israel, taking in the sights, smells and tastes of the various peoples and cultures. This spiritually uplifting experience included locations taken straight out of the Bible, mixed with museums, a winery, the Dead Sea, the Golan and the Galilee. Rev. David Klumpenhower and Rabbi Jesse Charyn, from Sun Health’s Spiritual Life department, provided insights into the religious and spiritual dimensions along the way! Rabbi Jesse knows the land, the culture and the history of Israel well, having lived there and served in the military. He’s an Israeli citizen, speaks Hebrew fluently and has led eight tours there.
“A Colonnade resident said, ‘Rabbi Jesse, this trip was phenomenal, and never did I hesitate with anything in Israel because I trusted you and you fulfilled your end of the bargain,’” Rabbi Jesse said. “Seeing everyone learning about each other and wanting to continue relationships they fostered on the trip was truly amazing.” The trip brought the bible to life in an overwhelming, humbling way, no matter what faith the travelers believed in. “That was our goal, to not tie the trip to just one specific faith, but instead have an interfaith, balanced experience that embraced all of the amazing spiritual components Israel has to offer,” said Rev. Callihan, residents of The Colonnade, the trip was an exciting opportunity to visit a place they’d always wanted to see. Every stop was well-planned trip and interesting, and they particularly looked forward to Bethlehem and Jericho. Colette’s dream was a bit different; she wanted to visit the site where Jesus was crucified and buried. It was the sole reason the 90-year old Catholic resident of La Loma Village took the trip. Visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was one of the most humbling moments of her life. Leaving the tomb with tears running down her face and holding the hand of Rev. Klumpenhower, “I can die now,” she told him with an expression of joy having fulfilled a bucket list item. Residents walked along the path believed to be where

Don't Make it Obvious No One is Home

If you are planning an extended summer trip to Wisconsin, Washington, or some other cooler destination, you don’t want to make it obvious that no one is home back at your Sun City Grand home. Our CHAPS Vacation Watch home inspectors sometimes find outdoor furniture stacked on top of each other and piled in front of sliding doors. To any potential burglar this says, “Gone For The Summer.” Your house should give the impression it is currently occupied, not vacant. CHAPS suggests you take the following precautions to keep your home looking occupied:
1. Trim back your front, side, and backyard bushes, shrubs, and trees, not just for a well-kept appearance, but to eliminate hiding places for intruders. If you use a paid landscaper have them do a summer yard cleanup. By mid-June palm trees will need their dead brown drooping branches removed. 2. Remove any ripened citrus from your fruit trees. Fallen or low hanging citrus can attract kangaroo rats and other rodents. 3. Drain water from backyard water features. Treat any remaining water with appropriate chemicals to kill mosquito larvae. Cover your water feature with a tarp if it is in a position to collect monsoon rains. Eliminate any standing water which can breed mosquitoes, who can carry disease. 4. Set your irrigation system for the hotter summer season. Make sure your watering system is working to all plants. Check for water leaks, and if found, repair them promptly. 5. Let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away so they can be alert for any suspicious activity taking place on your property. All of the above remainders are in addition to the usual security measures to take like locking all your home’s windows and doors, including your front security door. Making sure your home is safe and your property is maintained before you leave for the summer should be your goal. You don’t want to make it obvious that no one is home. As a reminder, you may submit a CHAPS “Vacation Request Form” if you are away from your home for two weeks or more. This form can be picked up at the Membership Office at the Palm Center or filled out on line in website. The next CHAPS general membership meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 1:30 P.M. at the Sonoran Plaza. We welcome all home owners to attend and learn more about CHAPS.

Winter Sun City Grand Softball Ends With a Roar Our winter session of fun in the sun has officially ended and the results are in. After days and days of rain delays and or game cancellations our Sun City Grand Softball Club sluggers finished the season in dramatic fashion. In the two Blue League
divisions both winning teams were 3 games better than their worthy opponents. In the American League, Liberty GMC, Dave Michels, manager finished out the season with a team batting average of .624. In the National League, the
manager Judy Muller and her teammates scored a championship title for their sponsor, Tom Ranalls Realty.
The Red League big boppers from the Great American Title team claimed the best record in their league under the leadership of Bob Topham and Rick Clot. Our weekend warriors in the Saturday League were out-matched by a strong ‘perfect season’ from the Thomas Pham Dentistry team and their manager Rocco Jankowski.

CULINARY CORNER Tilapia with Green Beans Ingredients • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano, plus more for garnish • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper • 4 6-ounce tilapia fillets • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 pound thin green beans or haricots verts • 1 clove garlic, chopped • 1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, halved • Juice of 1 lemon Directions 1. Combine the flour, oregano and parsley in a shallow dish.

Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge the fish in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in the skillet, then add 2 fillets and cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 4 minutes. Flip and cook through, 1 to 2 more minutes. Transfer to a plate and keep warm. Repeat with the remaining 2 fillets. 3. Add the green beans and garlic to the skillet and cook about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then add the tomatoes and cook until just softened, about 1 more minute. Stir in the lemon juice and 1/4 cup water, then cover and cook until the beans are tender, about 3 more minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon butter until just melted. 4. Divide the fish and vegetables among plates. Garnish with oregano. Foodnetwork.com

Reimagining Food and Beverage in Grand In a recent proprietary study surveying 55+ home shoppers, 70 percent said they would like to have a chef-driven food and beverage program in their community, proving there is now a higher expectation on dining experiences than simply offering a traditional bar and golf grill. In the same study, 90 percent of Boomers surveyed said they would like to have a sit-down restaurant in their community. To add, 45 percent said they would join a wine and cocktails club if the programming was available. From a recent Shea Homes/Trilogy article
Everywhere we look, boomers and Gen Xers are looking for more, much more, from their dining and socialization experiences. The October, 2018 Trends and Opportunities report (Space Allocation Committee), clearly reflects the sentiments shown in the above research: n They are seeking not only real estate that fits their needs; they are looking for a “lifestyle.” This translates into socialization experiences which include food, drink, free music, and activity. n Newer, competitive communities interpret these needs with clubhouses that are the hub of social and activity. n Demonstration kitchens are popular in five of the 10 top local communities. n Clubhouses are the social and activity hub of the community. They are located on premier properties, have extended hours, and show panoramic views of the community. Fitting with Boomers desire to remain active and connected, a clubhouse or community center is where residents meet friends and neighbors at restaurants and cafés, enjoy a fruit smoothie or cappuccino on the patio, converse with friends around the fire pits in the evenings or enjoy outdoor

entertainment venues. n It is more than ‘a building’. It is a purposeful design to create a truly ‘social hub’. For example residents can easily move between the pool, sport courts, restaurants, meeting rooms, demo/gourmet kitchen, fitness center, large outdoor patios and indoor seating areas. n Two of the top 10 communities have dedicated space for wine. The Baby Boomers have been powerhouse wine consumers since the 1990s n Boomers grew up with social activities that involved food and want a dining experience rather than just a meal. Reaching further back to the 2015 Strategic Plan and the Wendy Hultsman report, both talk about the importance of upgraded food and cocktail service here in Grand in order to attract tomorrow’s buyers who will buy in the community that best suits their needs for socialization. After all, it
is a “lifestyle” that we are all seeking – then we find a house. Since the beginning of the Long Range Planning Committee, it has been on their radar to reconsider how we provide food and beverage service in Grand to better meet the demands of our current residents and future buyers. If you look at our current arrangement, you’ll see that there is little continuity between the offerings in our food service delivery. We have two different outside vendors operating our two main restaurants; we have the golf operation managing our café and 4 golf snack shops; and a variety of approved caterers and food carts providing service for meetings, special events, etc. Because of this organizational structure, we have a fragmented offering that we believe can be improved. In addition, many people have pointed out that we are missing opportunities by not providing things that are standard offerings of resort-style communities throughout the country – food and beverage at the pools, smoothie bars near our fitness outlets, and healthy snack offerings as regular choices. One Gen-Xer recently commented that with our beautiful billiards facility, why didn’t we have a scotch and cigar bar right outside! Those who are coming now have a much different view of what food, beverage and entertainment is all about. In 2019, the LRP decided that now is the right time to address this issue in an organic and large scale way – there must be a better way to meet the needs of our residents – especially with one of our restaurant contracts coming to an end in December, 2020. If we are going to make a change, the time to start is now. After doing extensive research into the issues involved, and considering the various options, the committee decided that the prudent

help us find a suitable partner and begin the process of working out contract terms. All of this before one word is discussed about what each food outlet would look like or serve. That is well downstream from here. Our mission now is to improve the concepts and value of our food service by looking at a one partner solution to provide that consistent, high level of menus and service.

The board approved the funds to hire Fessel International to look at our operation and community and make some recommendations. They did offsite research into all the food service in Surprise and beyond, they spent three days here in Grand looking at not just the food service outlets and community, but talking to citizens and staff about their lifestyle and what
they see for our future. Out of that came an extremely detailed 260 page report showing us where we are missing opportunities and giving us “strawman” recommendations of what our future could look like. It was clear that trying to find a “partner” (a “win-win” for us and them to operate all our food services) was the way we needed to proceed. Our next step is approval of a contract extension for Fessel to use their extensive industry contacts to
There was a Town Hall on May 24th to introduce Fessel to the community, and a survey is on the way to seek your input on various aspects of our food service offerings. During the upcoming months, there will be many opportunities to better understand what LRP is doing and why. Stay tuned for meetings and more articles as we progress through this very important process for Grand. LRP believes that Grand could become the standard against which all other communities of our type are measured for our food and beverage and socialization offerings.

CLUB SPECIAL EVENTS BOCCE The Bocce Club is continuing with our newest program open to all residents of Grand: Drop–In Bocce. It is held twice a week every week on Tuesday mornings at 9 AM and Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.. New players are welcome and will be given instructions. Everyone plays and it is not necessary to join the club. We started at least 3 new leagues this season and our membership is around 800. Come out and join us. EUCHRE CLUB EVERY THURSDAY If you have ever loved the game of Euchre, you will enjoy being part of our Sun City Grand Euchre Club. Fishing trips are organized to areas in Arizona such as day trips to Lake Pleasant and the Salt River and overnight to the White Mountains, Lees Ferry, the San Juan River in New Mexico, Alaska and Canada. The Club assists in stocking fish at Lake Nine and has directions and fishing equipment for kids or grand kids to fish Lake Nine. The Club also supports community efforts including Healing Waters, Adaptive Kids Fishing, and the Veteran's Home fishing outing. Members also enjoy social activities like a spring picnic and a holiday party. Please join our club or attend one of our meetings. Guests are always welcome. Dues are $20 per year. MAH JONGG PLEASE JOIN US FOR AN AFTERNOON OR EVENING OF MAH JONGG The Mah Jongg Club plays according to National Mah Jongg League Rules. We generally play in the Hopi Room at the Chaparral Center. Bring with you your current NMJL card, five dollars in change, and your CAM card. We play a five dollar “pie.” If you lose your five dollars, you may continue to play. Who knows – you may win some or all of your money back! In order to join us, you must already know how to play. However, we generally give lessons in April and November. You may play up to two times as a guest before becoming a member. You may arrive or leave at any time during play. After you are East, you move to the next available table. This way, you will meet many of the other members and make new mah jongg friends. We play on Tuesdays from 12:30 P.M. to 4 P.M., and on Wednesdays from 5:45 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. You do not have to bring your own mah jongg set. We run tournaments for members several times a year and we have three social events. On January 1st, we have a “pot–luck” lunch. In April, when the new NMJL card comes out, we run a “New Card” luncheon, and in December, we combine a “Holiday Luncheon” with a semi– annual meeting, at which time we elect the officers for the following year. BY CRAIG NELSON 60 MINUTES A reference photo of a dancer allows Craig Nelson to emphasize gesture in a charcoal drawing and capture an exciting pose not possible with a live model. In this DVD workshop, Craig eases into the drawing by translating lines from his photo to his paper. He concentrates on angles and uses an imaginary grid and plumb lines to render a ghost drawing of his subject. Craig adds facial features and shadows early in the process but plans for later changes. MONUMENT VALLEY & CANYON DE CHELLY Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee and goodies on our way to enjoy lunch, on self, at Cameron Trading Post. A haven for travelers since 1916, this trading post boasts an expansive dining room, with a huge stone fireplace and tall picture windows, offering a view of the Little Colorado River Gorge. We’ll enjoy the ambience, along with an incredible menu that runs from burgers to salads, and includes local favorites, such as Navajo tacos and stews. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’ll head for Kayenta, where we’ll check into the Hampton Inn. We’ll take some time for a refresh and head out for dinner, on self, with a couple of moderately priced restaurants to choose from. Relax on the hotel patio and enjoy a menu offering Navajo or Western style entrees at Reuben Heflin’s Restaurant, or join the locals at Amigo Café, offering an extensive menu of traditional Mexican dishes along with several American favorites. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Two: Breakfast is included at the hotel. After breakfast it’s bags out and we’ll head for the visitor’s center where we’ll pile into jeeps for a 2.5-hour tour—more than 30 miles of secluded back-country to discover the restricted areas of Monument Valley—a sacred homeland to the Navajo, who are the Keepers of Monument Valley. We’ll learn about the history of the Anasazis, early Native American peoples, famously known for their petroglyphs, pictographs and their spectacular cliff dwellings. We’ll visit all of the famous monoliths of Monument Valley— The Mittens, John Ford’s Point, Three Sisters, North Window, Totem Pole, Yei Bi Cheis and Artist’s Point. These are the real-life backdrops for Hollywood Westerns such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, How the West was Won, and so many more! Plenty of water will be provided and be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and sun screen, and dress in layers. Afterwards we’ll enjoy lunch on self at the visitor’s center. Midafternoon it’s back on the bus, and we’ll head for Canyon de Chelly—pronounced canyon duh shay, where we’ll check into the Thunderbird Lodge. Owned and operated by the Navajo Nation, the historic Thunderbird Lodge will be our cozy headquarters for the night. We’ll take some time for a refresh before heading out. We’ll visit both the North and South Rim of Canyon de Chelly and we’ll experience the sunset highlighting Spider Rock. Later we’ll return to the hotel restaurant for dinner on self. Thunderbird Lodge sits on the site of a trading post that was built in 1896, and the cafeteria style restaurant is located in the trading post’s original building, serving Native American dishes, along with American favorites. After dinner we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Three: We’ll enjoy breakfast at the hotel on self. After breakfast it’s bags out. Jeeps will arrive to take us on a half day tour of Canyon de Chelly. We’ll be led by our Navajo guide, who will explain the significance of man-made structures and symbols while also sharing the natural points of interest. Heavy duty six-wheel drive touring vehicles are equipped with padded seats to provide a good experience. The tours stop frequently for photo opportunities, to visit ancient sites, Navajo farms and rock art. When the tour is over we’ll head back to the hotel for lunch, on self. After lunch it’s back on the bus, and we’ll head for home with plenty of great stops and sightseeing along the way. This whirlwind tour offers so much! BEARIZONA & CANYONLANDS RESTAURANT We’re on our way to Bearizona—Arizona’s most exciting wildlife park. We’ll enjoy a remarkable close-up experience with a wide variety of animals that are indigenous to North America; all from the comfort of a 50-passenger, windowless bus, with a Bearizona step-on guide leading the way. We’ll learn all about Bearizona’s history, along with fun facts about the animals and their naturalistic habitats. We’ll travel through more than three miles of Mountain Goat, American Burro, Brown Bison, Arctic Wolf, Tundra Wolf, Dall Sheep, White Bison, Big Horn Sheep, and Black Bear enclosures. Bearizona takes great care in providing animals with large, open enclosures, offering plenty of room to roam. We’ll visit the mini farm, where we’ll see mini goats, pigs, horses and more. Fort Bearizona is the second part of the adventure and it is a walk through area with baby and smaller animals on exhibit, as well as the Bearizona Barnyard, an interactive petting zoo. The last portion of the park is the Birds of Prey show that occurs three times daily in Fort Bearizona. It is very exciting to watch! We’ll enjoy lunch on self before beginning our tour, at Canyonlands—Bearizona’s much anticipated new restaurant. One year and $1.5 million in the making, this 6,000 square foot theme restaurant, features soaring canyon walls, ancient ruins, and an expansive two-story covered deck overlooking incredible views of the park. WHITE MOUNTAIN GETAWAY Cool off with us this summer in Arizona’s beautiful White Mountains. This high-country destination offers scenery much like Canada or the Pacific Northwest; it is a land of thick pine forests, crystal mountain lakes, lush green meadows and abundant watchable wildlife. At elevations of 6,500 to 9,000 feet, and temperatures that average 30 degrees cooler than the Phoenix area, the White Mountains are a terrific getaway. This region is also home to ten sparkling lakes—our focus for this scenic driving tour—and we’ll explore as much as time allows. Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies in Payson, on our way to enjoy lunch on self in Heber, at The Red Onion. A true Kindred Tours favorite, The Red Onion is famous for their cheeseburgers, homemade chili and daily lunch specials. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’ll enjoy the most remarkable scenery on our way to Hon-Dah Casino Resort, our headquarters for the next two nights. It’s star – tacky host Remus Philbrick who would have been a better fit as a greasy nightclub comic on a cruise ship in 1972. The “lovely” bachelorettes invited onto the show to fight to win themselves a millionaire are Tanya, (who got on the sexy line twice and bypassed the brains line altogether); Carleen, (been there, shot that); and Darma (sweetieperfection is annoying). Who will he choose to be his bride? And will it be the last choice he ever makes? Come join in the fun; maybe even be a part of the show. Murder & a Meal features a fun, theatrical story told by actors while participants enjoy a three course meal over a 2-hour period. SYCAMORE CANYON SCENIC DRIVE Arizona is a land of deep canyons, with the Grand Canyon being the obvious largest, and Sycamore Canyon the second runner-up. SUNSET CRATER VOLCANO & WUPATKI NATIONAL MONUMENTS Sunset Crater Volcano was created by a series of eruptions sometime between 1040 and 1100. Powerful explosions profoundly affected the lives of local people and forever changed the landscape and ecology of the area. Lava flows and cinders still look as fresh and rugged as the day they were formed. But among dramatic geologic features, you’ll find trees, wildflowers, and signs of wildlife. Later we’ll travel the scenic loop to Wupatki—the largest pueblo in the region. THE FOUR LAKES OF PRESCOTT & WHISKEY ROW There are four beautiful lakes in Prescott: Goldwater, Watson, Willow and Lynx. We’re going to visit them all, stopping first at Goldwater Lake, the jewel in the crown of the Prescott National Forest. From here we’ll head northeast to enjoy a spectacular driving tour of Watson and Willow Lakes. Known as the twin lakes, Watson and Willow are in the Granite Dells of Prescott, an area so scenic that it has seen more than its fair share of western movie shoots and was once home to the very popular Garden of the Gods Resort. An otherworldly stretch of gigantic boulders, Granite Dells runs along Granite Creek, with Watson and Willow Lakes sitting right in the middle making for the most remarkable of vistas. From here we’ll make our way to Lynx Lake, in the cool and pine-scented Bradshaw Mountains. So completely different from the twins, Lynx Lake is heavily wooded, and surrounded by tall Ponderosa pines, scrub oak and Manzanita. This lovely area is home to a wide variety of wildlife. We’ll be on the lookout for Albert’s squirrel, javelina, deer, and maybe even a mountain lion! We’ll begin this tour with lunch on self on Prescott’s famous Whiskey Row. Once a block of 40 saloons driven by the gold rush culture, Whiskey Row drew cowboys, gamblers, prospectors, bawdy girls and outlaws. Located in the greater Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest is contained within 150,000 acres, while the Painted Desert encompasses 1,500 square miles. They are not two separate parks and not desert! The natural world of Petrified Forest is far more complex than it seems on the surface. Back on the bus, we’re headed for the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert Diner. We’ll enjoy lunch on self and then spend some time exploring the downtown area—one of the best-preserved stretches of the Mother Road in America. After a quick stop at Pete’s Route 66 Gas Station Museum, we’ll jump back on the bus to explore the three lakes of Williams, beginning with lovely little Cataract Lake, just one mile out of town. From here we’ll travel to Kaibab Lake, 10 acres larger than Cataract and twice as deep. This beautiful alpine lake is settled into a cool and fragrant mountain forest, surrounded by wildlife. From here we’re off to explore Dogtown Reservoir, situated at the base of towering Bill Williams Mountain. This pretty forest lake got its name from the extensive prairie dog “towns” that once covered open areas near its shore. Pets traveling with their owners to run daily errands have become the normal routine for many residents. Dogs typically love car rides and are absolutely adorable hanging their heads out of the window for the feel of fresh air on their faces. However, if you cannot bring your fur baby
into the store or restaurant with you, please leave them at home during the summer! Heading into the grocery store for a quick item or running into the pharmacy might not take a significant amount of time; however, the intense summer temperatures make a vehicle an extremely dangerous place. Unfortunately, in many of hot car deaths, the driver simply forgot there was a passenger in the backseat. One tip that has been shared is to place a significant item in the front seat of the car to remind you of precious cargo in the back.

Pets should be walked early in the morning to avoid the direct sun. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has an abundance of helpful tips on pets and the summer heat. It is just as important to watch your pets around pools. Not all dogs are good swimmers and, just as with children, pools can be very dangerous.
Friendly Reminder: There is a Good Samaritan Law in Arizona that protects any individual who enters an unattended motor vehicle to remove a child or domestic animal from civil liability if a good faith belief exists that the child or pet is in imminent danger, injury or death. The law also requires the person to notify law enforcement or emergency medical personnel before entering the vehicle and to stay with

Dear Martin, NO, Internet Explorer is not safe because it is no longer supported by Microsoft— which means there are no updates or patches to fix any malicious or criminal exploits perpetrated by hackers to Internet Explorer. Technology experts warn that hackers constantly attempt to hack browsers, so browsers are patched on a regular basis—which is why keeping any browser you use updated is critical for your own safety. Just to review, a web browser (like Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc.) is a program used to navigate the World Wide Web to websites and web pages by typing a distinct web address in the address bar, like: www.google.com. A web browser is often confused with a search engine which is a program (like Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go, Yahoo, Ask.com, etc.) used to search for specific information to find websites on the World Wide Web. Switching to another browser depends on personal preference. n If you like to customize your browser with add-ons, Firefox offers both functionality and privacy: (https:// addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/). n Chrome has the biggest add-ons library (https://chrome.google.com/ webstore/category/extensions).

Settings and bookmarks can also be synced between Apple devices. n Microsoft Edge comes standard with computers running the Windows 10 operating system, works on both Android and iOS cell phones but isn’t compatible with older Windows versions. Bottom line, it never hurts to have more than one browser to compare performance, security, and options that are right for you. How Color Changed Navajo Textiles. The exhibition explores the Navajo culture, individualism and flair for experimentation in textiles from the last quarter of the 19th century. The textiles reflect ideas and events the weavers experienced between 1863 and 1868, the hard years of their imprisonment in the Bosque Redondo, and their subsequent return to a reservation. During this time, weavers saw examples of the design system of Hispanic textiles and acquired new materials such as aniline dyes and Germantown yarns that touched off their experiments with color and design. During this time of great change, as the Navajo rebuilt their flocks and repaired the devastation of Bosque Redondo, weavers had an unprecedented opportunity to experiment. The resulting textiles were not only appreciated by collectors and traders at the time, but future collectors and artists such as Josef Albers. The Heard Museum is simultaneously presenting Albers’ work in the Josef Albers in Mexico exhibition; visitors have a rare opportunity to explore the visual similarities in the use of color, repetition and design between Navajo textiles from the last quarter of the 19th century and the iconic paintings of Josef Albers. Change has always been a hallmark of Navajo textile design, with the weavers’ individualism tied to a continuing theme of innovation. Color Riot!
