Alberta Energy Rebate portal now open
Applications are now open for the Alberta Energy Rebate, putting tax dollars back in the hands of Albertans. Albertans can now apply for the one-time Alberta Energy Rebate, delivering more savings with more flexibility to families across the province. With direct payments of $100 to each eligible Albertan, the rebate will offer real, immediate relief on the cost of fuel, groceries, utilities and other household needs. From July 1 to Sept. 30, eligible Albertans can access the secure online portal to submit their application by visiting alberta.ca/alberta-energy-rebate. Read more

Advancing regulatory reform to strengthen investment
The Legislative Assembly of Alberta’s Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future is seeking public input as part of its review of the Lobbyists Act. Interested Albertans are invited to submit written feedback by noon on Monday, August 17, 2026, through the online form at assembly.ab.ca or by email to AEFCommittee.Admin@assembly.ab.ca. Canada–U.S. Trade Talks Intensify Ahead of August Tariff Deadline Canada–U.S. trade discussions have intensified ahead of August 19, when new 50 per cent U.S. tariffs are scheduled to take effect on a range of Canadian goods that would not benefit from the usual CUSMA exemption. Canada–U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Chief Trade Negotiator Janice Charette have made repeated trips to Washington in recent weeks, including two meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, as both sides work through outstanding issues. Canadian officials continue to pursue a comprehensive agreement that addresses sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and other strategic industries, while the U.S. has maintained concerns related to dairy market access, provincial restrictions on American alcohol and Canadian automotive measures. Prime Minister Mark Carney has described the discussions as constructive but has cautioned that reaching agreement across all sectors by August 19 is not guaranteed. The negotiations are unfolding alongside continued changes to the U.S. tariff framework. New Section 301 duties tied to forced labour enforcement are now in effect, although CUSMA-compliant Canadian goods remain exempt, and the measures are already facing legal challenges in the United States. At the same time, recent analysis from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Business Data Lab indicates that prolonged trade uncertainty is weighing on business investment and longer-term competitiveness. With CUSMA now operating under annual reviews and sectoral tariffs still unresolved, businesses will be watching closely for greater clarity on tariff relief, investment conditions and the direction of the broader North American trading relationship.

The Centre for Immigrant Research is hosting an upcoming employer engagement workshop in Grande Prairie. The Centre has been working on the TAIGA RISE project to develop a draft Employer Toolkit for Northern Alberta, to support employers with the attraction, integration, and retention of newcomer employees. They are seeking feedback from approximately 5-7 local employers to help ensure the toolkit is practical and relevant for businesses in Northern Alberta. The session will take place on Thursday, August 27, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Chamber of Commerce Board Room in Centre 2000, and refreshments will be provided. Where you live shouldn’t determine your power bill A growing coalition of residents, businesses, organizations, and municipalities across Alberta, the Fair Electricity Distribution Alliance (FEDA), is raising awareness about the unfair electricity distribution rates experienced by many Albertans. Right now, residents, businesses, and municipalities in northern, east-central and southern Alberta pay significantly higher electricity distribution costs than the rest of the province. Households pay an average of $118 a month, compared to about $34 in non-impacted service areas. For many businesses, distribution fees can be nearly three times as high as in other service areas.
