And we know exactly what that takes.

When the pressure’s on and failure’s not an option, professionals across the globe reach for Granberg. We don’t make gear only for comfort. We make serious tools for people who don’t flinch, don’t quit, and don’t wait for backup.

This is innovation built for the front lines. No fluff. No shortcuts. And sustainability? It’s in our bones — not just a checkbox.

We don’t just shield you from harm. We help you push harder, go longer, and perform without limits.

STANDARDS & MARKINGS

Ensuring quality and protection in our products.

We explain how markings and tests ensure that the products meet safety and quality requirements—and help you make the right choice for the workplace. These certifications and markings can be critical to their safety to ensure the user receives the correct type of protection.

CE – EUROPEAN APPROVAL FOR SAFETY AND QUALITY

European standards are developed to harmonise the national rules for personal protective equipment (PPE) in EU member states. Directive 89/391/EEC sets general guidelines for health and safety at work and obliges employers to “provide suitable personal protective equipment to employees.”

The directive also sets strict guidelines for PPE suppliers. These requirements are now internationally recognised, making it easier for employers to choose the right PPE, including protective gloves.

The national occupational safety authority in each member country (such as the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority) can provide more information and monitor that employers fulfil their obligations regarding risk assessment and safe use of PPE. National market surveillance authorities enforce EU legislation for product safety, testing, and labelling. In Norway, this is done by the Labour Inspection Authority and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB).

In addition, a number of EU standards specify how personal protective equipment should be tested and marked to meet CE marking requirements for various categories and types of protection. We provide an overview of the standards relevant to our products.

EN ISO 21420

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND TEST METHODS – PROTECTIVE GLOVES

EN ISO 21420 replaces EN 420:2003 +A1:2009 and has been adopted by ISO as a global standard. This general standard applies and is required for all protective gloves. It outlines general requirements for glove protection, including: Design and construction | Comfort and dexterity | Care and washing instructions | Health risks | Marking and information

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

Gloves must allow the user to perform everyday tasks without obstruction, while providing the highest possible protection for the intended use. EN ISO 21420 does not specify a minimum glove length, but specific standards (e.g., welding) may require a minimum length.

Sizing and measurements - Gloves are classified by size based on hand circumference and length.

HEALTH RISKS

COMFORT &

The glove’s dexterity is measured by the smallest diameter of a pin that can be picked up using the glove within a specified time.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL Smallest diameter (mm)

MAINTENANCE & WASHING INSTRUCTIONS

If washing instructions are provided, relevant tests must be carried out before and after the recommended number of wash cycles. The gloves must be marked with the lowest performance level measured before and after washing.

Simple protection, such as protective gloves for work where the risk is minimal (e.g. gloves for protection against dirt or light mechanical impact).

Protection against moderate risks, such as work clothes or gloves for use in industrial environments against mechanical risks such as abrasion, cuts and impacts.

Protection against serious risks, such as gloves that protect against chemicals, extremely cold or hot objects or electrical hazards.

EN ISO 21420 places strong emphasis on testing to ensure that the materials used are not hazardous or harmful to the user’s health or hygiene. Requirements include:

Chromium VI content below 3.0 mg/kg for leather gloves

No nickel release (<0.5 µg/cm2/week) from metal components in prolonged skin contact pH value between 3.5 and 9.5

No carcinogenic azo dyes above 30 mg/kg

• DMFa content (dimethylformamide) below 1000 mg/kg (1% w/w) for PU-based materials

• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons below 1 mg/kg for rubber and plastic in direct contact with the skin.

ELECTROSTATIC PROPERTIES

In ATEX zones, electrostatic properties must be tested according to EN 16350 (test method EN 1149-2). EN ISO 21420 introduces a new pictogram that may be used on gloves that meet the requirements of EN 16350.

MARKING & INFORMATION

All protective gloves must be marked with: Manufacturer’s name

Model designation

Pictogram for the relevant standard with performance level and reference

Size designation

Production date

Expiry date (if applicable) next to the hourglass symbol

If the glove itself cannot be marked, the packaging must include the above information.

The user manual must include:

• Name and address of the manufacturer or distributor

Product designation of the glove

Available sizes

Intended use with reference to relevant standards

• Pictograms of the applicable standards for the glove, including reference and performance levels

Pictogram indicating the risk category according to the PPE Regulation (Cat. I, II, or III) CE marking

• Instructions and limitations on use, maintenance, and storage

• Name and address of the notified body that approved the product Warnings (if applicable)

EN 388

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PROTECTIVE GLOVES AGAINST MECHANICAL RISKS

The European standard EN 388 outlines requirements for gloves designed to protect against mechanical risks. This includes resistance to abrasion, cuts, tearing, punctures, and impact. EN 388 provides users with information on each glove’s protective properties. This is essential for choosing the right protective glove based on a risk assessment of the task. For gloves to be certified under EN 388, they must also meet the requirements of the EN 420 standard for protective gloves.

THE PICTOGRAM & TEST METHODS

Abrasion resistance

Cut resistance (circular blade test)

Tear resistance

ABRASION RESISTANCE

Puncture resistance

Cut resistance (straight blade test)

Impact protection

The abrasion resistance is assessed by counting the number of rotations with sandpaper required to wear a hole through the glove material. Samples are taken from the palm area of the glove model being tested. The sample is mounted on a holder that rubs the material against sandpaper with constant pressure in elliptical motions.

The number of completed rotations before a hole appears in the sample forms the basis for evaluating the material’s abrasion resistance. Multiple tests are performed to determine a reliable result, which is then used to classify the glove model’s performance level according to the standard.

CUT RESISTANCE (CIRCULAR BLADE TEST)

This test assesses the cut resistance based on how many rotations are needed for a circular rotating blade to cut through the glove material under constant load. This is also called the “coupe test.”

Samples are taken from the palm of the glove model being tested. The circular blade moves back and forth in a straight line over a section of the material’s surface. It is exposed to a constant force of 5 Newtons from above. As the blade is pulled across the material in one direction, it rotates in the opposite direction; each time it moves across the sample in one direction, it completes a full rotation on its axis. The number of rotations completed before the blade cuts through the material is recorded.

Before and after each such test on the glove material, the same test is performed on a reference material made of cotton. The cut resistance is then calculated as an index value. This value is derived from the test result on the glove sample and the average result of the two tests on the reference material.

This test sequence is repeated enough times to determine the cut index that must be used to classify the glove model’s performance level according to the standard.

However, highly cut-resistant and “abrasive” materials can often dull the blade during the relatively long coupe test process, which may lead to inaccurate results.

EN 388 includes criteria to assess whether the material dulls the blade beyond a certain tolerance level during the coupe test, and limits the test to a maximum of 60 rotations. If the blade becomes dull, it is mandatory to conduct the EN ISO 13997 test (the TDM test), and the result from this test becomes the official reference for the glove model’s cut resistance. In such cases, the coupe test result may either be marked with an ”X”, or both results may be reported, with the coupe result listed as indicative only.

It is important to note that the TDM test may be performed and reported even if it is not mandatory. It is also possible to go directly to the TDM test.

TEAR RESISTANCE

The tear resistance of the glove material is evaluated based on the force required to tear apart a pre-cut sample.

Samples are cut from the palm area of the gloves of the relevant model. A cut is made from one end of the sample to create a split. The sample ends are mounted into two clamps that move apart at a constant speed until the material is fully torn. The required force is measured in newtons (N).

The test is repeated enough to determine a result that complies with the standard’s criteria for classifying the glove model’s performance level.

PUNCTURE RESISTANCE

Puncture resistance is assessed based on the force required to pierce the glove material using a rounded steel stylus with specified dimensions.

It is essential to note that this test does not indicate how well the material protects against penetration by sharply pointed objects such as hypodermic needles.

Samples are taken from the palm area of the gloves being tested. A sample is securely mounted in a test apparatus. A rounded steel stylus is then mechanically pressed through the material at a constant speed of 100 mm/min. The force required for the stylus to penetrate the material fully is measured in newtons.

The test is repeated sufficiently to determine the result that will be used to classify the glove model’s performance level according to the standard.

CUT RESISTANCE (TDM TEST EN ISO 13997 WITH STRAIGHT BLADE)

This test method simulates a single accidental, forceful contact with a sharp object. The cut resistance is measured by the force needed for a straight blade of specified dimensions to cut through the glove material in a single movement of just over 20 mm. This force is measured in newtons (N).

With the 2016 revision, this test for cut resistance according to ISO 13997 is fully incorporated into the EN 388 standard for the first time. It is also known as the TDM test. This test is mandatory when the glove material dulls the blade beyond an acceptable tolerance level during the coupe test. In such cases, the TDM result becomes the reference for the glove model’s cut resistance.

Many glove models on the market are now made from materials with such a high abrasive effect and high cut resistance that they must be tested according to EN ISO 13997 under EN 388:2016. This often applies to materials containing glass or steel fibres.

This method uses several short, single cuts. Each cut must be made using a fresh section of the knife edge over an unused area of the glove material. No blade part may pass over the material more than once, so the blades must be replaced frequently—ideally after each cut, even of short length. Blade dulling is therefore not a significant factor.

Test samples are cut from the relevant model’s gloves and mounted on a slightly curved surface. The method requires many cuts to meet the standard’s requirements for determining the force to classify the glove model’s performance level. This force corresponds to the minimum required to cut through the glove material with a movement slightly over 20 mm (i.e., with a certain margin of error, the blade must travel 20 mm just before cutting through the material).

Even when not required, the TDM test may still be performed, and the result may be reported. It is also possible to opt directly for the TDM test.

It is important to note that there is no direct correlation between the performance levels obtained from the coupe test and those from the TDM test.

IMPACT PROTECTION

EN 388 introduces a test to evaluate the impact protection of gloves with reinforced areas, such as the knuckles on the back of the hand.

The test is performed according to section 6.9 of EN 13594:2015, a standard for motorcyclists. It is optional, but gloves cannot claim impact protection under EN 388 unless this test has been performed and passed for each part of the glove for which such protection is claimed. Due to the small dimensions of glove fingers, the fingers cannot be tested using this method.

The user manual must state which parts of the glove are claimed to have impact protection and clarify that this protection does not apply to the fingers.

Glove samples of the relevant model are cut open so that the area being tested can be separated from the rest of the glove.

A flat-headed impactor weighing 2.5 kg is dropped onto the test area from a sufficient height to generate an impact force of 5 J. The amount of force transmitted through the material determines the performance level of that area. This force is measured in kilonewtons (kN).

The areas claimed to have impact protection must meet the minimum requirements for Level 1. This means the average force transmitted through the material must not exceed 7 kN, and no individual result may exceed 9 kN.

If the glove model passes the test, a “P” can be marked in the sixth position of the performance levels under the EN 388 pictogram.

EN ISO 374

PROTECTIVE GLOVES AGAINST CHEMICALS AND MICROORGANISMS

The EN 374 standards contain updated requirements and tests for gloves intended to protect the user from chemicals, microorganisms, or both. This updated set of standards is referred to as EN ISO 374:2016.

It gives users more information regarding the gloves’ protective properties in this category. The set consists of five parts, each with its standard:

• PART 1: Terminology and performance requirements for protection against hazardous chemicals (EN ISO 374-1:2016)

• PART 2: Resistance to penetration (EN ISO 374-2:2019)

• PART 3: Resistance to chemical permeation (EN 374-3:2016 / EN 16523-1:2015)

• PART 4: Resistance to chemical degradation (EN ISO 374-4:2019)

• PART 5: Terminology and performance requirements for protection against microorganisms (EN ISO 374-5:2016)

PART 1: TERMINOLOGY & PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS AGAINST HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS

EN ISO 374-1:2016 applies to gloves intended to protect users against chemical risks. It specifies performance requirements, terminology, symbols, and the information, warnings, and instructions that must be included in the user manual.

The standard no longer requires testing in accordance with EN 388, but gloves must still meet the general requirements for protective gloves under EN ISO 21420.

PART 2: RESISTANCE TO PENETRATION

Liquids or air can penetrate protective gloves at a non-molecular level through pores, seams, tiny holes, or other imperfections in the material. EN 374-2:2014 defines two tests to assess resistance to such penetration:

• Air leak test: The glove is submerged in water and filled with air. Leaks are observed via visible bubbles.

• Water leak test: The glove is filled with water. Water droplets forming on the outside indicate leakage.

Sample gloves from each production batch are tested for penetration resistance. Each batch must meet minimum AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) standards.

PART 3: RESISTANCE TO CHEMICAL PERMEATION)

The new standard EN 16523-1:2015 replaces the previous permeation standard EN 374-3:2003. Permeation is the process by which a potentially hazardous chemical moves through a material at the molecular level, often without any visible change to the glove surface.

In the lab, this is measured as the normalised permeation rate (1ug/cm2/min), determining breakthrough time.

Breakthrough time is established by applying a chemical to the glove’s exterior (typically from the palm) and measuring the time it takes for it to be detected on the inner surface. If the glove is 400 mm or longer and the cuff is claimed to provide chemical protection, additional samples from the cuff must also be tested.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL 1

While tests follow the standard, real-life variables like temperature, abrasion, and stretching can significantly influence permeation rate.

The employer is responsible for evaluating test data and determining how long the gloves can be used safely for specific tasks.

Note: Results apply only to the specific chemical tested. A mixture containing the same chemical may produce a different result.

Glove Categories Based on Chemical Permeation Performance:

Type A - Minimum Level 2 (>30 min) for at least 6 chemicals.

Type B - Minimum Level 2 for at least 3 chemicals.

Type C - Minimum Level 1 (>10 min) for at least 1 chemical.

Letter codes for tested chemicals must be displayed below the

A Methanol 67-56-1 Primary alcohol

B Acetone 67-64-1 Ketone

C Acetonitrile 75-05-8 Nitrile compound

D Dichloromethane 75-09-2 Chlorinated paraffin

E Carbon disulfide 75-15-0 Organic sulfur compound

F Toluene 108-88-3 Aromatic hydrocarbon

G Diethylamine 109-89-7 Amine

H Tetrahydrofuran 109-99-9 Heterocyclic ether compound

I Ethyl acetate 141-78-6 Ester

J n-Heptane 142-82-5 Saturated hydrocarbon

K Sodium hydroxide 40% 1310-73-2 Inorganic base

L Sulfuric acid 96% 7664-93-9 Oxidising inorganic acid

M Nitric acid 65% 7697-37-2 Oxidising inorganic acid

N Acetic acid 99% 64-19-7 Organic acid

O Ammonium hydroxide 25% 1336-21-6 Organic base

P Hydrogen peroxide 30% 7722-84-1 Peroxide

S Hydrofluoric acid 40% 7664-39-3 Inorganic mineral acid

T Formaldehyde 37% 50-00-0 Aldehyde

PART 4: RESISTANCE TO CHEMICAL DEGRADATION

Degradation refers to a negative change in the material’s properties—swelling, discolouration, deformation, or brittleness—that may reduce the glove’s protective capability. The same chemicals used in the permeation test are applied here. After exposure, the material is tested for puncture resistance. The degradation percentage is the difference in puncture resistance before and after chemical exposure.

There are no minimum performance requirements for degradation, but results must be stated in the instructions.

PART 5: PROTECTION AGAINST MICROORGANISMS

EN ISO 374-5:2016 covers gloves intended to protect against microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It outlines requirements for terminology, performance, markings, and user instructions.

The previous version covered only bacteria and fungi; the 2016 version adds virus protection. Two Protection Categories:

• Protection against bacteria and fungi

• Protection against bacteria, fungi, and viruses

To claim protection against bacteria and fungi, the glove must pass EN ISO 374-2:2019 (penetration resistance).

To claim virus protection, the glove must also meet ISO 16604:2004, Procedure B for viral penetration resistance.

Bacteria & fungi

Bacteria, fungi, & viruses

Note: The breakthrough time begins at the first contact with the chemical, even if exposure is not continuous.

EN 407

PROTECTIVE GLOVES AGAINST THERMAL RISKS

This standard specifies performance levels for gloves protecting against heat and/or fire.

The European standard EN 407:2020 is a revised and updated version of EN 407:2004. One reason for this revision was to include gloves for domestic use (e.g., oven mitts) under the personal protective equipment (PPE) regulation.

The updated version introduces a new pictogram that replaces the previous symbol when no flame protection is provided (i.e., level 0 or X = not tested). This new symbol makes it easier for users to choose the right hand protection. The previous pictogram is still used for gloves with limited flame protection (at least level 1).

The six performance levels remain the same as in the earlier EN 407:2004 standard. A key change in EN 407:2020 is that the requirement for abrasion resistance according to EN 388 has been removed, while the requirement for tear resistance remains. Gloves certified under EN 407:2020 must achieve at least performance level 1 for tear resistance (EN 388) and comply with EN ISO 21420:2020..

The new standard also requires a minimum length for gloves claiming protection against small and large splashes of molten metal.

To achieve level 3 or 4 for thermal properties, the limited flame spread test must also reach at least level 3. If not, the glove can be classified no higher than level 2.

Burning behaviour (x, 0-4)

Contact heat resistance (x, 0-4)

Convective heat resistance (x, 0-4)

Radiant heat resistance (x, 0-4)

Resistance to small splashes of molten metal(x, 0-4)

Resistance to large splashes of molten metal (x, 0-4)

Note: ”X” = test not performed. Higher levels = better protection.

BURNING BEHAVIOUR (0–4)

Based on how long the material continues to burn or glow after the flame is removed. The material is exposed to flame for 10 seconds. The material must not drip during the test. The glove’s inner lining must show no signs of melting, and seams must remain intact.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL AFTER FLAME TIME (S) AFTER GLOW TIME (S)

1 ≤ 15 No

CONTACT HEAT RESISTANCE (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

Based on the temperature range at which the user will feel no pain for at least 15 seconds. The glove’s material is exposed to high temperatures (up to 500°C) during the testing. To gain the relevant performance level, the temperature of the inside of the glove cannot increase more than 10°C within the threshold time (15 seconds).

PERFORMANCE LEVEL CONTACT TEMPERATURE °C THRESHOLD TIME

PROTECTIVE GLOVES AGAINST COLD (DOWN TO –50 °C)

Cold protection is indicated with a pictogram and levels related to three risk factors. Gloves must meet minimum abrasion and tear resistance (EN 388) and are tested for flexibility in cold conditions.

Resistance to convective cold (x 0,4)

Resistance to contact cold (x, 0, 4)

Resistance to water penetration (x, 0, 1)

Note: ”X” = test not performed. Higher levels = better protection.

CONVECTIVE HEAT RESISTANCE (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

Based on how long the glove delays the transfer of heat from a flame source until the inside temperature rises by 24 °C.

LEVEL

RADIANT HEAT RESISTANCE (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

Based on how long the glove resists heat transfer from a radiant heat source until the inside temperature rises by 24 °C.

PERFORMANCE

RESISTANCE TO SMALL SPLASHES OF MOLTEN METAL (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

The number of molten iron (other metals can be tested as required) drops required to heat the glove sample by 40°C shows the performance level the glove corresponds to.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL

RESISTANCE TO LARGE SPLASHES OF MOLTEN METAL (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

A quantity of molten iron is poured onto the sample, which has a simulant of skin attached to the sample. The weight of molten metal is measured by how much molten metal is required to damage the simulant of skin. The test fails if metal droplets remain stuck to the specimen or if the specimen is punctured or ignited.

RESISTANCE TO CONVECTIVE COLD (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

Based on thermal insulation and the amount of energy required to maintain the temperature of a heated hand model in a cold chamber.

RESISTANCE TO CONTACT COLD (PERFORMANCE LEVEL 0–4)

Based on the material’s thermal resistance when touching a cold object.

PENETRATION BY WATER (X, 0 OR 1)

The glove is worn by a test subject and immersed in water up to the wrist. It is held there for 5 minutes. During the test, and after the glove is removed from the water, the test subject makes a fist at regular intervals, and water penetration is checked.

0 = Water penetrates within 30 minutes from the start of the test.

1 = Water does not penetrate within 30 minutes from the start of the test.

EN 455

SINGLE-USE MEDICAL GLOVES

This standard specifies requirements and testing for medical gloves. The requirements are described in Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on medical devices (MDR). This includes tests to determine freedom from holes, glove dimensions, and the mechanical strength of glove materials before and after aging.

PART 1

EN 455-1 covers requirements and testing for freedom from holes. According to the standard, randomly selected glove samples must undergo a water leak test. A statistical glove sample taken from a batch must achieve an Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) of 1.5 or better to be used in medical examinations, procedures, or surgeries.

An AQL of 1.5 corresponds to a maximum 1.5% risk that a given glove has a pinhole that would allow water—and, therefore, microorganisms—to penetrate the material.

PART 2

EN 455-2 describes requirements and testing for physical properties, including tensile strength, of medical gloves before and after accelerated ageing. Gloves are treated differently depending on their intended use and the material they are made from.

EN 455-3 covers biocompatibility requirements and testing. The standard specifies methods for testing protein content (extractable latex proteins impact latex allergies), powder levels, and endotoxin levels.

EN 1186

MIGRATION TEST FOR MATERIALS IN CONTACT WITH FOOD

Materials (including gloves) intended for contact with food must be marked with the “glass and fork” symbol.

There must also be information on which types of food the gloves or material have been tested for. It is important that the material does not transfer substances to the food in harmful amounts, cause unacceptable changes in the food’s composition, or affect taste and smell. This is regulated by the overarching Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004.

PART 4

EN 455-4 covers shelf life requirements and testing. The standard specifies studies for real-time and accelerated shelf life, allowing manufacturers to document that products remain durable for up to three years (typically) without degrading while still meeting EN 455 requirements

Even if a product is tested and approved according to EN 455, it must comply with EU 2017/745 Medical Device Regulation (MDR) to be sold as a medical device.

Regulation (EU) 2017/745

MEDICAL DEVICE REGULATION

Regulation (EU) 2017/745 came into effect in May 2017, replacing the MDD (Medical Device Directive) and the Active Implantable Medical Device Directive (AIMD). This new regulation aims to improve the quality, safety, reliability, and transparency of medical devices placed on the European market. The regulation defines rules and obligations for manufacturers and other economic operators concerning quality and safety management. It enhances patient safety by introducing stricter compliance procedures to ensure no non-compliant or unsafe device is marketed in the EU. It also introduces a system for traceability and transparency across the medical device supply chain. Devices and stakeholders such as manufacturers and importers are registered with a Unique Device Identifier (UDI). This system allows for quicker investigations in case of product issues. Information about all medical devices on the EU market will be available to patients, consumers, and the public through a centralised database (Eudamed).

Specific legislation also applies to plastic materials in contact with food: EU 10/2011. Under this, migration tests are specified according to EN 1186.

Food simulants are used to test various types of food and how substances from the gloves migrate (transfer) into them. The tests may show that certain gloves are unsuitable for food handling, or only suitable for handling certain foods, such as wet but not fatty foods.

MATERIAL

All materials have different properties that determine their effectiveness for specific applications. Below is an explanation of the differences between natural and synthetic materials and their unique characteristics.

NATURAL MATERIALS

LEATHER

Leather is strong, pliable, flexible, and offers good breathability. It can absorb moisture, so leather gloves rarely feel damp inside, maintaining a dry and comfortable interior. In most cases, chromium is added during the tanning process to soften the leather, which may cause allergic reactions in some users. Therefore, a maximum Chromium VI content of 3 mg/kg is set for leather/split gloves, as defined in standard EN 420.

Grain and Split Leather - What’s the Difference?

Leather properties vary depending on the part of the animal hide used. Side leather has the best durability. Before tanning, the hide is split into two layers: the outer layer becomes grain or nappa leather, while the inner layer is known as split or suede.

Grain/Nappa

Grain/Nappa is the top layer of the skin. This top layer of hide is smooth, durable, soft, supple, and moisture-absorbent. It is an excellent choice for precision gloves, such as assembly gloves, where the demand for precision is high.

Goatskin

Split leather/Suede

Split leather/suede has a rougher surface than grain leather and is available in many different thicknesses. It also tolerates heat well. Split leather is an excellent material for work gloves for heavy-duty tasks or welding gloves that must withstand extra heat and sparks.

Goatskin has a detailed and ribbed rough appearance, giving the leather surface a beautiful and natural pattern. What characterises goatskin is that it is soft, thin, and relatively durable. The grain layer of some types of leather is lightly polished and therefore has a beautiful appearance while being light and elastic.

Pig Grain

Pig grain is a type of leather that stands out from other variants. The grain layer has irregularly distributed, relatively large bristle pores and a wrinkled and somewhat rough grain pattern. Because bristles grow from relatively deep layers, wild boar bristles have small channels throughout their length that increase water permeability and moisture absorption.

The leather’s thickness is somewhat uneven, with relatively high abrasion resistance and low elasticity.

Cow Grain

Cow grain is soft, has a fine and even surface, a fine grain pattern, and relatively even thickness throughout. It is also very strong.

Cowhide differs from calfskin in the grain pattern, which is slightly coarser. It is also thicker and stiffer.

Cow grain is less water-permeable than pig grain and does not get wet as easily.

SYNTHETIC MATERIALS

ACRYLIC FIBRE

Cow Split

Cow split is leather with a blurry surface. The blur is achieved by polishing the inner surface, making it less durable than cow grain.

Cow split is uniformly thick, soft, flexible, and fine, with good physical and mechanical properties. Its surface has small funnel-like pores that are almost invisible because they are covered by longer hair.

Cow split is significantly less water-permeable than pig grain or cow grain.

BAMBOO

Bamboo is a natural fibre made from herbaceous plants and is very soft, velvety, and slightly glossy. It has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that are retained even after many washes. This property means there is no unpleasant odour when using products made of 100% bamboo. This fibre can be considered organic as no pesticides are used in bamboo cultivation. Compared to cotton, bamboo fibre can absorb moisture 3–4 times faster and 60% more in volume, and bamboo dries twice as quickly. Bamboo does not irritate the skin, so gloves made of this fibre can be an alternative for people with allergies and sensitive skin.

COTTON

Cotton is a plant fibre usually further processed into yarn. This yarn is well-suited for producing soft, airy textiles. Woven or knitted cotton fabrics easily absorb moisture, are easy to wash, do not become statically charged (static electricity), and their properties are not altered at temperatures below 150°C. Cotton is therefore perfect for clothing worn directly against the skin. The recommended wash temperature for cotton textiles is up to 60°C. Cotton is often blended with other types of yarn, especially polyester and polyamide. These synthetic fibres make the fabric more durable. Cotton fibres are not elastic and are often blended with elastane.

LATEX

Latex is an elastic and very durable material made from the rubber tree sap. Rubber is elastic because its macromolecules form spirals. The molecules extend when stretched and coil into spirals when released. This property allows latex to adapt to various hand shapes naturally. It is highly elastic (stretches up to 750%) and has a long lifespan. Latex provides good protection against most alkaline products and cleaning agents. Latex is highly abrasion and tear-resistant but can be punctured by sharp objects. The main disadvantage of latex is its composition, as it contains proteins and chemical allergens.

KEVLAR®

Acrylic fibre is a synthetic fibre containing at least 85% acrylonitrile. It resembles wool, cotton, or blends of these in appearance. This fibre is flexible and resistant to moths, gasoline, chemicals, and direct sunlight. It is commonly used for knitted textiles, such as fleece clothing, sports, and children’s wear.

ELASTANE

Elastane is a synthetic elastomer fibre consisting of at least 85% polyurethane. It is elastic, and when stretched to three times its original length, it returns to its original length as soon as the stretching forces cease. Single or multi-strand yarn made from this fibre is used as a component for various fibre compositions. Elastane yarn gives polyester, nylon, cotton, or other composite fabrics high elasticity, making garments made from these fabrics comfortable and form-fitting.

Kevlar is a para-aramid fibre that is highly durable, flexible, and relatively lightweight. Its tensile strength is five times higher than that of steel, and the material can withstand temperatures up to 370°C. This fibre is non-flammable and extremely cut-resistant. Usually, yarn made from Kevlar fibre is used to sew heat-resistant gloves.

KOZANE®

Kozane is an innovative, high-tech textile that offers high cut, abrasion, and puncture resistance yet remains soft and very flexible. It is used in the production of protective clothing and gloves, protecting users against tears and cuts.

LYCRA®

Lycra® is the trademark of DuPont™ Group. It refers to elastane (EL) without latex or natural rubber (elastane from other brands may, for example, contain a certain percentage of latex).

MACROSKIN PRO®

MacroSkin Pro is a mechanically strong and highly elastic material. It is also soft and thin with a relatively smooth surface that is comfortable against the skin. The material structure consists of a combination of nylon and polyester, which provides better abrasion resistance, prevents wrinkling, and ensures that moisture is released quickly. These properties make the material suitable for producing gloves for various purposes.

MICROSKIN SHIELD®

MicroSkin Shield is a highly elastic material with good anti-friction properties. Its core consists of an exceptionally strong, durable, and water-repellent polyester thread. The polyurethane-coated microstructure pattern ensures softness and a perfect grip on various surfaces. It also provides better resistance to water and grease.

NEOPREN

Neoprene is a synthetic chloroprene rubber. Neoprene is highly flammable, more durable than natural rubber and resistant to oil and solvents. Neoprene has good chemical stability and elasticity over a wide temperature range. This material contains millions of pores (air holes) where the air is heated to body temperature, thus exhibiting good heat-protective properties. The thicker the neoprene, the better the heat protection. This material is often used for glove cuffs and producing cold- and moisture-resistant gloves.

NITRILE

Nitrile is a synthetic acrylonitrile and butadiene polymer. Nitrile gloves were developed as a solution for the growing group of allergy sufferers who have developed allergies to latex gloves. Nitrile has several advantages, as it is made of synthetic rubber, which is not an allergen. Another important property of nitrile gloves is their durability. Nitrile gloves are three times more puncture-resistant than latex or vinyl gloves. Thanks to improved manufacturing processes, nitrile gloves have properties almost on par with latex in terms of comfort, elasticity (elongation up to 500%), and ability to adapt to the shape of the hand.

Nitrile gloves are widely used in machine shops and in households where there is direct contact with lubricants, gasoline or other chemicals. Nitrile gloves are suitable for use at high temperatures. However, they should be stored at low temperatures in a dry and dark place, as nitrile’s properties deteriorate if stored in sunlight, humidity or heat. Nitrile is not as “sticky” as latex, and most people have no problem putting the gloves on and taking them off. However, nitrile is not as elastic as latex, so it is important to choose the right size gloves.

NYLON

This synthetic fibre has great tensile strength, abrasion resistance, good wear resistance and chemical resistance. It has better moisture absorption properties than other synthetic materials. Nylon is sensitive to sunlight and yellows, so it is often blended with other fibres.

POLYAMIDE

Polyamide is a synthetic fibre that is very friction-resistant (about 10 times more than cotton and 20 times more than wool). Polyamide fibre is very stretchable and resistant to static electricity. It is light, almost completely water-repellent, wrinkle-free, elastic and durable. However, it quickly absorbs electrical charge, discolours easily, is not flame-retardant, and melts in the event of a fire. Polyamide is therefore often blended with natural fibres, which makes it more durable and gives it a longer life. Cleaning products should not be used when washing. The most popular type of polyamide is nylon.

POLYESTER (PES)

Polyester (PES) is a widely used synthetic linear copolymer produced from gasoline. This fibre is friction-resistant, almost wrinkle-free, durable, does not absorb moisture, and dries very quickly. Polyester is often blended with wool, cotton or linen to provide increased durability, softness and shine and reduce wrinkling of woven or knitted fabrics. Polyester products do not require special maintenance. However, be aware that clothes with a lot of polyester should be kept away from heat and direct sunlight.

POLYETHYLENE (PE)

PE - polyethylene is a thermoplastic, elastic and non-toxic polymer. It is highly flame-resistant, and once ignited, it burns without emitting soot. It is insoluble in common solvents at room temperature. It is resistant to acids, bases, salt solutions and is light-permeable. The most important properties of polyethylene are its density and melt index. As density increases, impact resistance and transparency decrease, and there is an increase in melting temperature, strength, chemical resistance, and impermeability to gases and odours. When the melt index of polyethylene is reduced, recyclability is impaired, but it provides better resistance to impact, chemicals, and abrasion. Moreover, sliding properties are improved. The properties of polyethylene can be improved by modification:

LDPE - low-density polyethylene (density 910–925 kg/m3) without additional polymerisation. This type of polyethylene is viscous and soft.

MDPE - medium density polyethylene (density 925–940 kg/m3) which combines the best properties of LDPE and HDPE.

HDPE – high-density polyethylene (density 940–970 kg/m3). This is one of the most practical and affordable materials on the market. It is also very robust and durable, but is less elastic than other types of polyethylene.

POLYPROPYLENE (PP)

Polypropylene (PP) is both more durable and more temperature-resistant than polyethylene. The density of polypropylene is one of the lowest (about 0.9 g/cm3) of all plastics. The maximum operating temperature for polypropylene is 120–140°C. All polypropylene products can be sterilised frequently by steaming or boiling, as this does not affect their shape or mechanical properties. PP surpasses PE in its heat-resistant properties. However, the material is less cold-resistant and becomes brittle at -5 °C Therefore, PP manufacturers add special additives to increase its resistance to low temperatures. Non-woven polypropylene is a non-woven fabric made of very thin plastic fibres (polypropylene). It is a highly practical type of textile because it is durable, soft, light, and inexpensive. In addition, this textile can be easily recycled after use. It is most often used to manufacture medical face masks and disposable clothing.

POLYURETHANE (PU)

Polyurethane (PU) is a thermoplastic elastomer and a highly elastic material with good anti-friction properties. A glove palm formed from solid polyurethane is thin, straight and flexible. A glove palm formed from polyurethane microfoam is soft and resistant to water and lubricants. Polyurethane microfoam allows air to pass through, so the hands stay cool and dry. Polyurethane microfoam is flexible and adheres well to the required surface in a dry environment.

PROTEX®-MEMBRANE

ProTex® membrane is a polyurethane membrane consisting of numerous micropores smaller than a drop of water but larger than a vapour molecule. The membrane structure prevents water droplets from entering, while sweat easily evaporates. This process results in an impermeable, windproof, and “breathable” membrane.

PVC

PVC is polyvinyl chloride, which is produced from oil and table salt. PVC has an extensive flexibility/ rigidity scale,

and can therefore be extruded, rolled or sprayed. This highly durable material is resistant to acids, alkalis and alcohol. It can also assume any colour.

This polymer exhibits good chemical resistance, a low flammability class, and good UV resistance. It is widely used to produce work gloves.

SPANDEX

Spandex is the name of an elastomer fibre standardised in the USA. According to ISO standards, this fibre is called elastane.

TYPHOON®

Typhoon® is a strong (tensile) fibre combination with the highest cut resistance. The technological solutions used have resulted in a fibre combination of high molecular weight polyethylene, glass fibre and elastane/spandex. Made from such fibres, the threads are elastic with good air permeability and resistance to moisture. Typhoon® is lightweight, 10 to 15 times stronger than steel (per unit weight) and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibres.

VINYL

Vinyl is not as durable or stretchable as latex or nitrile. It tears and punctures more easily. However, vinyl is easier to obtain and is cheaper than latex and nitrile. Vinyl gloves do not fit well around the wrist and do not provide adequate protection against liquid penetration if the material is stretched or elongated.

Vinyl’s low elasticity limits hand comfort and fit. It does not contain natural rubber proteins or chemical accelerators, making it the most skin-friendly material available. Vinyl gloves are economical for activities that do not require high precision, making them a perfect choice for low-risk activities.
