Suit Up For Game Day!

©STEHEAP / ADOBE STOCK

Article Written By: Amaya Summers

KICK OFF THE 2026 FOOTBALL season with a fresh set of merch from your favorite team and players. It's no surprise that everyone's go-to NFL merch item is, of course, the team's jersey. A jersey is incredibly versatile and easy to layer from casual to game-ready fits. Overall, it's an essential merch item that most fans will have at the big game. Early in the off season, the Falcons, Commanders, Bills, Jets, Ravens, Rams, and Titans released their brandnew team jerseys for the upcoming season. Get yours at the official NFL website, or on your team's official online store. You can often shop a limited selection of jerseys on sale or clearance throughout the year on the NFL website. Though, for brand new or limited-edition jerseys, you can expect to pay upwards of $150-$200. While wearing jerseys to see the big game at the stadium—or your couch—is typical, there are other cheaper alternatives to rep your team during the season. TRIS TA TE H O M E & O UTD OOR 2026

Layer your game-day fits with a long or short sleeve t-shirt. Most logo shirts on the official NFL website are marked around $40; however, prices may differ depending on the season, availability, and team. Longsleeved shirts are great for cooler weather, an extra layer for frigid, winter games, or for casually repping your team on the weekdays. Hosting a watch party at home? Go for a full casual fit with your team's favorite training gear. Grab your team's short-sleeve t-shirt, a hat, and sweats for the best at-home game fit for under $100. Official merch or not, if you yell loud enough, whether it's in the stadium or through your living room TV, you're probably on par with every other fan in the nation. Why travel far when your favorite teams are close to the Tristate? Grab your merch for the West Virginia Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Washington Commanders at the Tristate's favorite retailers.

VIEWS WORTH THE DRIVE With the growing market for hiking shoes, it is extremely difficult to pick the correct shoe for hiking, comfort, and all that is in between. When shopping for the right shoe or sandal for your next hike, keep two elements in mind: terrain and hiking habits. Depending on what type of hiking trail you are taking, a full hiking boot might not be necessary. Smooth terrains with well-kept paths are excellent for light hiking shoes, whereas rougher terrains with more rock call for a tougher shoe that not only protects your feet from the trail, but offers more stability than that of a hiking shoe. Going for a swim on your way up the mountain? Hiking sandals might be your best bet. Hiking habits are another important factor in your footwear choice on the trail. Ask yourself the following questions: How many miles are you hiking in one session? How fast do you want to hike? Do you typically hike in cold or warm weather? Unlike hiking boots, hiking shoes and sandals are perfect for easy terrain and short trips, but even better for fast-paced hiking. The last thing you want when running is a thick shoe weighing you down. Hiking boots are great for colder weather and long trips with heavy pack weight, as they keep your feet warm and your balance sturdy.

STOP. LOOK. EXPLORE. Whether it is to a waterfall or a scenic overlook, hiking outdoors is fun for the entire family! Before you get out on the trails, keep in mind your impact on the environment and fellow travelers. Learn to protect yourself, nearby wildlife, and other travelers with these seven notrace principles on and off of the trail. 1. PLAN AND PREPARE Check the weather and ensure you have all the necessary food and supplies

for your entire trip. Remember to give your friends and family your travel plans before embarking in case of an emergency. Most importantly, research the animals in the area and take necessary precautions against them— especially in their mating seasons. It is not uncommon to see black bears in wooded areas within the Tristate. Unlike grizzly bears, black bears are smaller, lack a back hump, and have a straight face profile. If you encounter one on your hike, do not panic—slowly retreat and ready your bear spray as a last resort. Typically, black bears are

TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE

timid and easy to scare, but they might be encouraged by the smell of food. If the bear continues to approach you, do not play dead; instead, make loud noises and raise your arms to seem larger than you are.

2. TRAVEL ON DURABLE SURFACES Keep in mind your safety as well as sustaining the wilderness around you. For popular spots, travel in a single file line, and try not to veer off path. Doing this can widen the path and destroy nearby vegetation in the process. Use extreme caution around any sudden drop offs and bodies of water, as erosion can make the ground unstable. If you are traveling in pristine areas, disperse the group and trek thoughtfully. Ideal hiking paths typically have clear footing, packed dirt or gravel, and rock. 3. DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY The term, "Pack in, pack out," is a fundamental outdoor ethic that should be used by every outdoor traveler. Pack everything you might need on the hike, use it, then pack it back into your bag. Never leave anything on the trail that was not there beforehand. It is always a good rule of thumb to leave the trail cleaner than it was prior to your visit. If you are stopping to cook, be sure to pack a trash bag for any food scraps (including produce and meat) and a bucket for carrying water from your water source. After washing dishes, walk TRIS TA TE H O M E & O UTD OOR 2026

at least 200 feet away from any water source and scatter the water. Check your state's website for further policies on trash disposal. 4. MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS Ninety-six percent of wildfires in the Tristate are caused by human activity and burning debris—no person is an exclusion to this statistic. Always try to use fire rings or pans when permitted. If you are building a fire in a heavily wooded area, gather your timber responsibly, keep it small, and burn everything to ash. As you are leaving, scatter the cool ashes to prevent re-ignition and enrich the soil. In the Tristate area, wildfire activity peaks during the spring and fall due to the absence of leaf coverage in forests. Without leaves to block sunlight and wind, the dry forest floor becomes susceptible to ignition. 5. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Take pictures and leave only footprints on the trail! Clean your boots from non-native species before your hike and never touch historic artifacts or structures. Recently, building a tower of rocks for a social media post is a popular practice on the trails. The

action might seem small, but its impact is far larger than you would imagine. Taking rocks from streams destroys necessary habitats for invertebrates that are critical to wildlife. Additionally, rock towers are not sturdy and fall easily, potentially posing a threat to nearby wildlife and travelers. Chances are that the post is not as important as the stream's clean water and prosperity. 6. RESPECT WILDLIFE Depending on the area you are entering, wildlife can be abundant and unpredictable. No matter how approachable any wildlife might seem, always keep your distance and never feed them. Feeding and approaching wildlife can alter their behavior and cause them to pose a greater threat to the next hiker or traveler they meet in the future. If you bring your pets along with you frequently, ensure they are properly trained for a potential encounter with any animal or person they meet on the trail. 7. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER TRAVELERS In heavily populated trails, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of people squeezing by. Always research beforehand the popularity of a trail on community boards and try to hike earlier in the day to avoid crowds. The hiking community is generally a welcoming one; smile or wave to passing travelers and yield to fastmoving hikers or those making their way up.

Healthy, Local Foods to Fuel You The best produce does not come from the grocery store; it comes from your local soil. Local farmers' markets offer a large selection of perfectly ripe produce that are more nutritious and abundant than those in store. From the moment of harvest, fresh fruits and vegetables go through the process of respiration, the deconstruction of organic materials; hence, the longer produce is on the road, the less nutritious it is to the consumer. In commercial produce markets, the average apple travels roughly 1,500 miles to the grocery store, losing nearly 45% of its nutritional value. For local farmers, their trip to the local market is far less; 60% travel up to 20 miles to sell their fresh produce. So, while some markets might be slightly more expensive than grocery stores, the quality of produce available is much higher.

Nutritional value is not the only aspect of farmers' markets that benefits the public, as shopping local puts more money in farmers' pockets by cutting out the middleman. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, farms earn less than 6 cents of every food dollar spent. Additionally, in 2024, crop producers' earnings dropped from 2.9 to 2.5 cents on every food dollar. With these constant swings in earnings, even the slightest drop can put financial strain on local farms and businesses. Rather than earning pennies on the dollar, shopping directly from the farmer puts every cent you give them back into the farm. Moreover, every 1 million dollars in revenue creates 32 local jobs at farmers as opposed to the average 10.5 created by wholesale growers.

Grow through the seasons Article Written By: Amaya Summers

Don't let the cold deter you—start planting your vegetables this fall for fresh ingredients for almost every meal. Planting in the fall provides an abundance of benefits for any gardener including weed suppression, low maintenance, high protein harvests, and improved nitrogen levels in the soil. No matter your skill level, fall harvests are easy to accomplish! While it may sound contradictory, fall is the best season to work on your new flower beds to prepare them for a successful and abundant spring bloom. You can either use bagged soil or go for a cheaper alternative with items lying around your garden already. Grass clippings, leaves, trimmings, and old plant foliage will decompose on their own over the winter, leaving you with rich soil for any kind of plant you might want. Throw your annual plants in the mix, too! If they show no sign of disease that may impact the soil or your future plants, annual plants are perfect for fertilization and fostering healthy soil. That said, don't forget to cover your soil, plants or no plants, with shredded leaves to protect from winter frost. For seasoned gardeners, give your garden a reality check this fall—it's the perfect season to make changes and address issues you've been facing throughout the year so far. First and foremost, always keep in mind the layout of your garden as there is always the right place for the right plant. When thinking about your layout, look at where the sun hits at all points of the day—does your plant's needs match the amount of sun it's getting? It goes without saying that full shade plants shouldn't be under direct sunlight all day long. If you do not have the space or shade outside for your plants in need of shade, bring them inside to closely monitor their progress while working on growing taller plants outside. While you're transferring some of your plants indoors, make room for decor! Dried plants are popular for their appearance indoors—especially in the fall, but they also are high in antioxidants and have a concentrated flavor that lasts all-yeararound. Looking for new plants to sow this season? Plant smart. In recent years, local wildlife has struggled from habitat destruction and a lack of food sources to eat from. Consider planting native plants in your garden to help the Tristate's tiny pollinators thrive. Milkweed is an excellent choice for your garden as it acts as a natural defense to toxins and pests, is low maintenance, and is an essential plant in Monarch butterfly survival—a crucial ecosystem indicator and flagship species for local conservation. Do be mindful of your planting of Milkweed, however; it requires a period of cool, wet weather before warm weather. Some gardeners put the seeds in the fridge for the winter, then plant, but it is best to plant in the fall with nutrient soil. Visit your state's Department of Natural Resources for more information on native plants you can plant in your backyard, as well as guides on seedling care and planting. ©VALYA82 / ADOBE STOCK

GRILLED PHILLY CHEESESTEAKS Yields: 4 servings

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS 1.5 lb of ribeye steak

salt and pepper to taste

2 onions sliced

8 provolone cheese slices (or cheese whiz)

2 green bell peppers

4 hoagie rolls

3 tbsp oil

1 tbsp butter for toasting rolls

DIRECTIONS 1. Divide the cooked steak into 4 portions and top each portion with provolone cheese so it melts over the hot steak. Butter the hoagie rolls and toast them on the griddle until golden. 2. Scoop each steak portion with the caramelized onions and peppers into a toasted roll. Serve immediately while the cheese is fully melted. Pro Tip: Keep the griddle hot before cooking the steak so the edges brown quickly while the center stays juicy. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days; reheat on the griddle or in a skillet to re-melt cheese. Freezing isn’t recommended for the best texture. For a lighter option, use reduced-fat provolone or a thinner cheese layer so the sandwich still melts without as much fat. ©LIMESKY / ADOBE STOCK

SWEET POTATO NACHOS INGREDIENTS

Yields: 4 servings

1 lb sweet potato cut into slices

1/2 tsp smoked paprika

1 lb ground beef

1 can black beans

1 tsp chili powder

3 tbsp adobo sauce

1 tsp cumin

2 chipotle peppers in adobo

3 garlic cloves

4-6 oz shredded Mexican-blend cheese

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 425F. Add sweet potato slices to an extra-large baking sheet (21×15") and spread out evenly so that there's no overlap. Spray or brush the top of each sweet potato slice with oil and season with kosher salt. Flip, and repeat on the other side. Transfer to the oven to roast for 15 minutes, flipping halfway. 2. Bring a large pan to medium heat. Once hot, add ground beef. Season with chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, kosher salt & black pepper. Then add black beans, garlic, chipotle peppers and adobo sauce. Cook for 3 more minutes. 3. Reduce oven temperature to 400F. Push the sweet potato slices closer together on the baking sheet. Spread the ground beef mixture evenly over top, followed by the shredded cheese. Return baking sheet to the oven for about 5-8 more minutes, or until cheese is melted. 1. Preheat your griddle to medium-low heat and add a pat of butter or a generous spray of cooking oil. 2. Lay one flour tortilla flat on a clean work surface. 3. On one half of the tortilla, sprinkle a generous layer of crushed graham crackers, then evenly distribute mini marshmallows over the graham cracker layer. Finally, add your chocolate, keeping all fillings on one half of the tortilla. 4. Carefully fold the empty half of the tortilla over the filled half, pressing down along the edges to seal. 5. Transfer the folded quesadilla to the preheated, greased griddle. 6. Cook the quesadilla for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden-brown and the fillings are melted and gooey. 7. Once both sides are golden and the fillings are oozing, carefully remove the quesadilla from the griddle and let it cool slightly. Slice into wedges.

Reconnect & recharge Article Written By: Amaya Summers Between seasonal changes, back to school, and the upcoming holiday rush, it is easy to get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of life. As stress reaches its peak, remember to take a step back and reconnect with yourself outside of life's demands. Grounding is one of the best techniques for not only reducing stress but becoming perceptive to the changing world around you. Always start your exercise in a safe environment—however that might apply to you. Whether it is outside lying on the earth, or inside wrapped in blankets, if it is calming, go there. Some broad exercises might include journaling gratitude, decluttering a space in your home, reading, trying out grounding yoga poses, or spending time away from electronics. More often than not, though, in highstress situations, there is little time for these practices. If you find that you are out and without your typical escape, take a step back and try the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory TRIS TA TE H O M E & O UTD OOR 2026

method—it is a simple route towards calmness and regaining control. Close your eyes, relax your shoulders, and ask yourself the following questions: What

are 5 items you can see around you? What are 4 textures you feel right now? What are 3 distinct noises you can hear? What 2 aromas can you smell? What is 1 flavor you can taste? By the end of this exercise, even if the environment you are in is still stressful, you should be better informed of your current emotions, making your response less impulsive and more intuitive. Not every technique may work for you—that's okay! Pick and choose which works for your needs in the moment and your lifestyle at large. Every time you use a grounding exercise you are well on your way to centering yourself and putting forth your best energy this fall.

1. Getting in the Boat Now, the most important part—sitting in the boat. Depending on your kayak (or style), different methods of mounting your boat may be more efficient— we will use the simplest. Walk into knee-deep water with your boat, leave your legs in the water and sit down, and swing your legs over and onto the boat—that's it!

2. paddling Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle with your knuckles aligning with the top edge of the blades on either side. To steer the craft, fully submerge one blade and think backwards—pull your paddle towards you on the right side of your craft to veer left, and the left side to veer right; alternate each side to keep straight.

3. reading moving water Keep an eye out for Vs! Look for a Downstream V for a clear and deep channel but steer clear of an Upstream V with submerged obstacles lurking just out of sight. If you think you are headed towards a dam, angle yourself towards the bank and paddle; never attempt to float over a dam on your craft or out of it.

4. getting out of the boat Exiting your craft is as easy as reversing your steps of getting in—swing your legs in the water and stand up, or if you’re lazy, free your legs and roll into the water.

Primary Care Goes Digital: How Meritus Health Is Bringing the Doctor’s Office Home Article Provided By: Meritus Health

FOR MANY PEOPLE, FITTING A DOCTOR’S

appointment into an already busy day can be a challenge. Between work schedules, family responsibilities and travel time, routine healthcare often gets pushed down the priority list. Meritus Health is helping change that reality with Meritus Virtual Primary Care, a service that allows patients to connect with a healthcare provider from the comfort of their own home. Meritus Virtual Primary Care expands access to healthcare by giving patients the opportunity to establish a relationship with a primary care provider through a convenient, secure virtual platform. Available to patients across Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, the service is designed to function much like a traditional primary care practice, allowing patients to receive ongoing care from their provider without the need to visit a physical office. Patients simply use a smartphone, tablet or computer equipped with a camera to connect with a provider. No application download is required. “This virtual service offers primary care services for children, teens and adults,” said Miranda Ramsey, Meritus vice president of physician services. “It offers accessible high-quality care, making sure that our patients have a strong health partner and advocate.”

The launch reflects a broader shift in healthcare delivery, as more patients seek convenient ways to access medical expertise without sacrificing quality of care. Virtual visits can help remove barriers such as transportation challenges, mobility limitations and time constraints while maintaining the personal connection patients expect from their healthcare providers. Meritus Virtual Primary Care is designed to serve as a patient’s primary care home, supporting them through every stage of their healthcare journey. Providers offer preventive care, wellness services, annual checkups, follow-up care and ongoing management of chronic conditions while developing long-term relationships with their patients. For many people, a typical primary care appointment involves discussing health concerns, reviewing medications, evaluating test results and creating a plan for maintaining overall wellness. Patients who feel comfortable having those conversations through a virtual platform may find Meritus Virtual Primary Care to be a convenient alternative to an in-person visit. By eliminating travel time and waiting rooms, the service makes it easier to fit healthcare into busy schedules while still maintaining a strong connection with a trusted primary care provider. Ease of use was a major consideration in developing the service. Patients do

not need a password or account to get started and can schedule appointments online in just a few steps. Those who already use MyChart can also access the service through that platform, although it is not required. Meritus Health welcomes both existing patients and individuals who are new to the health system. Another advantage is convenience. Virtual appointments give patients greater flexibility when scheduling care around work, school and family commitments. The service combines the ease of telehealth with access to experienced providers who can address routine healthcare needs and support long-term wellness goals. As healthcare continues to evolve, virtual services are becoming an important tool for strengthening connections between patients and providers. Meritus Virtual Primary Care is the latest example of how technology can complement traditional healthcare by offering a convenient, accessible option that keeps patients engaged in their health and wellness. For residents of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, quality primary care is now only a few clicks away. To learn more or schedule an appointment, visit www.meritushealth.com or call 301-790-9072.

1. Vertical Kitchen Garden

BE STOCK

©PEERAWAT/ ADO

Give your outdoor kitchen a vibrant touch with a functional, vertical garden backsplash. This DIY project is perfect for plant lovers or those looking to upgrade their plant knowledge. Vertical gardens are not only visually appealing, but they are incredibly functional as well. These gardens help to grow healthier plants, streamline harvesting with easy access, and increase the amount of space in your yard for a spacious look. Skip the grocery store—and that cluttered spice cabinet—and grow fresh herbs in reach such as basil, rosemary, thyme, mint, or lavender!

2. Overhead Shelter In need of shade from the summer sun and a touch of color in the winter months? Look no further! Pergolas and gazebos are an excellent way to upgrade your outdoor space. Pergolas use vertical slats as the roof to allow breeze from above and sunlight. In expensive models, these structures have motors built into their structures that turn the slats horizontally, completely blocking rain and excessive sunlight. While not as functional in every season, static pergolas are an elegant and inexpensive option for your backyard if your furniture or kitchen underneath is durable enough to constantly be exposed to the elements. Gazebos, on the other hand, offer more customization to the roof that can adapt to your outdoor preferences. With a standard, open-air design, add a sloped, flat, or pagoda roof—open or shingled.

3. Useful Appliances A functional outdoor kitchen calls for upgraded appliances for the whole family. Depending on the space your outdoor kitchen offers, conventional, all-in-one kitchens offer, at minimum, a grill and cabinet storage. Larger models often include better storage solutions, sinks, coolers, and pizza ovens. However, if you are looking to fully customize your space consider investing in additional burners for cooking sides, warming drawers to keep the food at a perfect temperature, or a high-pressure cup rinser for the sink.

4. Colorful Kitchen Accents Is your outdoor space a little too bland? Elevate the area with a splash of color by integrating two-tone cabinets, bar stools, or mixed cushions throughout the space. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to follow the 60-30-10 color rule. 60% of the space should be a neutral base (walls or large furniture), 30% goes to a secondary color (planters and cushions), and the last 10% is for vibrant accent colors for decor pieces. While it is good to have a theme in mind when planning your outdoor kitchen space, it is not necessary to follow a strict design—a few pops of color here and there can bring a TRIS TA TE H O M E & O UTD OOR 2026

space to life!

5. Mobile Kitchen Island Grill With the right pavement outdoors, a mobile kitchen can be a game changer for cooking outdoors. Keeping your grill on wheels means easier storage in the off season. Add extra storage to the side of your kitchen island for cooking utensils, sauces, and seasonings to limit trips back and forth. Unlike built in kitchens, mobile island grills offer less of an initial investment without gas or water lines. Simply build and start cooking—wherever!

For lower temperature regions, be sure to use setting materials made for freezing temperatures, as well.

6. Geometric Walls and Storage

9.

Often, the biggest change in an outdoor kitchen are layers that create both functional work zones and a welcoming ambiance. Geometric storage units mounted to the walls of your kitchen give depth to the space while keeping your tools, utensils, and herbs in arms reach. If you are looking for added privacy, there is no need to sacrifice storage space, either. Consider building vertical, slatted sidewalls or half-walls with increased shade and soundproofing all with natural air circulation.

There is never enough storage in an outdoor kitchen—create more space with easy-toreach utensil pegs above your cooking area. If unpredictable, tiny hands are an issue in your outdoor space, hanging your utensils is a must. These highly customizable kits typically come with a mountable bar and hooks where you can decide how many saucepans or spatulas you need. Depending on the theme of your space, stainless steel is an excellent option for added durability and hygienic qualities; however, cosmetic smudges from fingers, grease, and weather are a common problem with all types of metal outdoors. Steer clear of wood for this project as it is easily susceptible to rot, pests, and mold.

7. Conversational Seating Integrate your guests into the outdoor cooking experience with conversational seating. By adding a few barstools to a kitchen island, you can instantly blur the lines between food prep and dining. This hack maximizes the amount of space available in your outdoor space without sacrificing any storage, decor, or seating. No island? No problem. For an L-shaped outdoor kitchen, place a rectangle table nearby to keep your guests close enough to grab drinks from the cooler, but not close enough to feel the heat of the grill.

8. Funky Tiles Create a visually striking contrast in your space with solid matte, glossy, or patterned tiles along its surfaces. While it is not always necessary to use brightcolored tiles, it is certainly welcomed! Drape every inch of your kitchen space in tile from the kitchen island to the walls behind your grill. Porcelain and dense, natural stone tiles are the best choice for this type of project as they have a low-absorption rate, meaning no mold, cracks, fading, or fire-induced combustion.

Wall-Mounted Racks with Hooks

10. Mobile Kitchen Furniture Your kitchen island is not the only thing that can be mobile. Add wheels to your dining chairs, patio coffee table, and ottomans for an endlessly customizable arrangement and easy storage in the winter months. Resin wicker and powder-coated aluminum are popular choices amongst outdoor furniture materials for their light, yet durable qualities. For furniture cushions, consider textilene fabrics that are quick-drying, low maintenance, and weather resistant!
