Thursday, 25 August 2011 Graduate House 220 Leicester Street, Carlton 6pm for 6.30pm Jeffrey Rosenfeld is Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, Monash University and Director, Department of Neurosurgery the Alfred Hospital. He trained in general surgery and neurosurgery in Melbourne, Oxford, UK and Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He is Adjunct Professor to the Centre for Military and Veterans' Health, University of Queensland. He is a Major General and the Surgeon General Defence Health Reserves, Australian Defence Force. He joined the Army Reserve in 1984 and has served on seven overseas operations including Rwanda, East Timor, Bougainville, Solomon Islands and Iraq. He is a world authority on military trauma particularly neurotrauma. His research at Monash University is primarily on traumatic brain injury. He has published over 200 peer reviewed articles, chapters and a book. He is also the Chair of the Editorial Board of the 'ADF Health' which is the journal of the Defence Health Services and is on the Editorial Board of four international journals. Dr Tony Gould, AM Topic: Living in a country or just on it? (The Shameful Neglect of Australian Art Music) Wednesday, 7 September 2011 Noon for 12.30pm Graduate House, 220 Leicester Street Carlton Pianist, composer and educator, Dr Tony Gould has received many accolades for his contribution to music. This year he was inducted into the Qantas Hall of Fame in the National Bell Awards for Jazz. Since 2000, • Awarded an Order of Australia for services to Music and Music Education • Awarded the Australia Council for the Arts prestigious Don Banks Award for Services to Music and Music Education. • Victorian Award from Australian Music Centre and APRA for service to Music and Music Education. • Award for Instrumental Work of the Year-AMC/APRA (2009) • Awarded Sessional Teacher of the Year (Music-Monash University) • Artist in Residence-Arthur Boyd's Artist Studio-Bundanon • Multiple Aria Nominations Dr Gould has the uncommon distinction of having degrees from three of Melbourne's most prestigious Universities: a Bachelor of Music from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Arts from Monash University and a Doctor of Philosophy from La Trobe University. Dr Gould has performed with and accompanied many internationally renowned artists including Clark Terry, Mark Murphy, Ernestine Anderson, Ronnie Scott, David Jones, Don Burrows, John Sangster, Graeme Lyall, John Hoffman and Bobby Shew. He has been guest artist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and appeared as associate artist with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Dave Brubeck, Sarah Vaughan, the LA Four and many others. In early 2005 Dr Gould resigned his position as Head (Dean) of and Associate Professor at the School of Music, Victorian College of the Arts to pursue his performance and composition career. He is currently making several new recordings, one with the saxophonist Robert Burke, one with guitarist Stephen Magnusson, one with cellist Imogen Manins, and another with singer Rebecca Barnard. He has just completed two books, as part of the commitment to a Fellowship awarded by the Australia Council for the Arts: Essays on Music and Musicians in Australia, and, The Art of Musical Improvisation: Thoughts and Ideas

July Luncheon reviewed Paul Sheahan captivated the audience in his address at the July luncheon while he gave an insight into his ‘Fortunate Life’. With an interesting upbringing in a traditional Protestant home in Werribee, overcoming knock-knees at an early age and attending school at Geelong Grammar, he later pursued a career in Education. Paul fondly recalled for the audience a memory of endlessly fielding at the Soldiers Reserve practice in Werribee twice a week when he was young and although he was obsessed with sport from that young age, his passion in later life was not Cricket but instead Education. After he matriculated in maths, Paul taught at various schools while he played cricket for Australia. Remembering instances of character building where he would finish a test match and return to work the next day to be riled by his co-workers for the disappointing result on field. He believes with certainty that intellectual achievement has been the driving force in his career: to see young people achieve something they thought they never could greatly inspires him. Even while playing for Australia he continued to state that he was an educator first and a cricketer second. Paul’s departing remarks were that it is never too late to be what you might have been.
August Luncheon reviewed Dr Robin Hirst gave an amusing and informative lecture about how museums have changed from Victorian times to the present day. In contrast to the modern day, he said, in Victorian times people were content to just look at exhibits and read notes about what they were seeing, These days modern technology allows exhibits come alive for people to ‘experience’ events which hitherto they could only read about. He showed pictures of the first museum in Melbourne and its founder Professor McCoy, noting that some exhibits were similar in content and arrangement. He likened the museum experience to the TV character Dr Who’s telephone box time machine and used the word ‘tardis’ in the title of his address. The meaning of ‘tardis’ being ‘a place that is much bigger than it looks from the outside’ and which characterises a museum which is a relatively small building, housing the history of the earth and mankind.
