MEMBERS’ CHRISTMAS PARTY The Christmas Party on 17 December was as always a particularly festive affair. The evening went very smoothly as you would expect. Santa was superb and everyone loved him. He handed out sweets and there was a mood of bonhomie and good cheer. The President welcomed guests, wishing all a very happy Christmas and congratulating the staff on their commitment and excellent work during the year. Our Master of Ceremonies for the night, Daniel Clark, took over the microphone, and introduced the special entertainer, Illusionist Simon Taylor. Lucky draws were conducted at intervals during the evening with many wonderful prizes won and the table centrepieces were the final gifts of the evening to be claimed by a guest at each table. The festive meal commenced with special tasting plates of prawns, smoked salmon and other delicacies and was followed by a traditional Christmas dinner. Dessert followed the entertainment and was presented with sparkling lights to the darkened room. The dessert was an array of delicious assorted sweetmeats, together with fruit platters to which members could help themselves. Simon Taylor entertained guests at each table with magic tricks throughout the evening, capping off the entertainment with a 20 minute magic show. Santa distributed a plethora of gifts, courtesy of generous suppliers to Graduate House and Anne Mulholland was clearly delighted to win the $1000 white goods bistro prize which was drawn after dinner. MICHAEL GAWENDA Wednesday, 2 February 2011 Noon for 12.30pm Graduate House 220 Leicester Street Carlto Michael Gawenda is one of Australia’s best known journalists and authors. In a journalism career spanning three decades. He has been a political reporter, a foreign correspondent based in London and in Washington, a columnist, a feature writer and an editor. He has won numerous journalism awards including three Walkley awards. Michael began his journalism career at The Age in Melbourne in 1970. Career highlights: Political correspondent based in Canberra 1972-75: London correspondent from 1977 to 1981 Feature writer 1982 to 1987 Senior Writer, Time Magazine 1987-1990: Senior Editor Time Magazine 1990-1993 Deputy Editor The Age 1993-1996: Editor and Editor in Chief of the Age 1997-2004 Washington Correspondent, The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, 2005-2007 American Notebook, a personal and political journey was published in August 2007 Rocky and Gawenda: The story of a man and his mutt was published in October 2009 Michael is currently the Director of the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Advanced Journalism.
