he Honourable John Cain was appointed the fourteenth President of The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne following the retirement of Mr Frank Lees on his 80th birthday on 16 November 2005.

A Law graduate of The University of Melbourne, Mr Cain was admitted Barrister and Solicitor Supreme Court of Victoria and High Court of Australia in 1954 and managed his own law practice from 1957 to 1976. After joining the Australian Labour Party in 1948, he held various offices in Branches and Campaign Committees including Campaign Secretary and Chairman of State and Federal Campaign Committees. He was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly, Bundoora District in 1976, a position he held until 1992. His portfolios included Shadow Minister for Public Works 1976-1977, Shadow Minister for Planning 1977-1981, Shadow Attorney-General 1979-1981 and Leader of the Opposition 1981-1982. He became Premier of Victoria in April 1982 and served in this position until 1990. Mr Cain has been a Professorial Associate, Department of Political Science at The University of Melbourne since May 1991. He was a member of the Observer Team from the Commonwealth Secretariat of South Africa’s first national election in April 1994. His other offices have included - Member Trust, National Tennis Centre (Flinders Park) 19901994. Besides his new role as President of The Graduate Union, he currently holds the following positions: • Trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, • Member of Deakin University, Faculty of Business and Law Academic Advisory Board • Chairman of Hume Global Village Learning Advisory Board • Member of the Library Board of Victoria • Member of the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust In addition to academic and community involvements, Mr Cain is the author of several publications including: • John Cain’s Years, Parties and Politics, Melbourne University Press 1994 • On with the Show, Prowling Tiger Press 1998 • Off Course: from public place to marketplace at Melbourne University (with John Hewitt), Scribe Publications 2004. He lists his interests as reading, running, swimming, tennis and bike riding. He and his wife Nancye have two sons, a daughter and nine grandchildren.

The setting was ideal, the ambience most suitable and the food and service excellent. Please pass on our thanks to Lyn, Molly and Rosie for a memorable occasion. It was a pleasure - meeting old and new friends, seeing the Club on show, the gentle piano and the quality refreshments. This achievement, and particularly your speech, have rejuvenated the Graduate Union and fertilised its soil for many other development projects. Your recognition of Bill Berry’s foresight was healing. Bill remains a leading character in the history of the Graduate Union, and I hope a large colour portrait of him will hang prominently in the Club. Having enjoyed four years in Ormond College, I was glad to hear you call Graduate House the University’s eleventh college. That is a worthy challenge in itself, and may involve our

Support from friends means a great deal at a time like this and I do appreciate yours. The Thanksgiving service at our church in East Ringwood was a real celebration and I think a fitting tribute to Alan. THE MELBOURNE GRADUATE FAREWELL TO LAUREN MCKERLEY After three years as Administrative Assistant, Lauren was farewelled in December. She will be greatly missed for her bright personality and efficiency at the front desk of Graduate House. Over her time at Graduate House she has been an integral part of the many changes, and a valued member of ‘The House family’ which includes both residents and staff.
WELCOME DIANA MOYSES Diana has joined the Graduate House staff as Lauren’s replacement. She comes to us with a hotel/hospitality background, having worked at many venues around Melbourne and overseas in Germany. She is very multi-skilled, an important prerequisite of employment at Graduate House, and members will see her around The House in many roles.
WELCOME BASMA TANTAWY Basma was born Egypt where she attained a teaching degree in fine arts. After coming to Australia in 1988 she and her lawyer husband decided to pursue the culinary arts as opposed to the fine arts and Basma has managed three successful hospitality businesses as well as becoming a chef in Italian cuisine. She has two children, Amro, a current student at Victoria University, and Sherihan, a graduate of that University. Basma says the environment at Graduate House allows her to express her talents freely, but without the stress of running her own business. ‘I’ve never felt happier and more at ease, working with the team at Graduate House. The students are colourful and wonderful people and our guests are very lively, just like the staff!’
LUNCHEON ADDRESSES DECEMBER
Leukaemia closer to a cure ......... Beth Eveleigh gave a fascinating talk on 7 December saying there had been much research and great progress towards a cure. Diagnosis of leukaemia 60 years ago was a death sentence while today 46% of adults and 80% of children survive, thanks largely to the targeted therapies now available and which do not have the sometimes devastating side effects of chemotherapy. Beth paid special tribute to the late Dr John Colebatch, a pioneer in the use of aggressive treatment of leukaemia in children and a life member of the Graduate Union.
NAMING OF THE WILLIAM BERRY WING AT GRADUATE HOUSE, 22 DECEMBER 2006 MC Heather Kudeviita called it ‘a red letter day’ and indeed it was. Many friends, donors and Councillors gathered to celebrate the unveiling of a handsome brass plaque since placed in the interior entrance at 224 Leicester Street. On behalf of the trustees, guests were welcomed by Heather who spoke of her long association and admiration for Bill Berry. She said his generosity had culminated in a benefaction of $100,000 for the upkeep of the College terraces and, having been wisely invested, would be used for this purpose. After warmly thanking Secretary-Warden Eugene Spanti for his generous hospitality, she called on Barbara Funder, co-trustee and former colleague of Bill Berry, to speak of Bill Berry, the man. Barbara addressed the gathering, recounting her first meeting with Bill Berry in 1962 when she successfully applied for a position at the Graduate Union, being told later she had been ‘the most robust candidate interviewed’. Their last meeting in 1999 was in a hospital room the day before he died, where although seriously ill, he was planning a coming meeting of the graduates. ‘A great adventure’ was how Barbara described the intervening thirty-seven years, saying she believed Bill Berry was ‘a man for all seasons’, omnipresent and irrepressible, and the person who in a lifetime of service kept alive the notion that a University should actively keep in touch with its graduates. The postgraduate area being of particular interest to him, there was great satisfaction when in 1972 the Graduate Union became affiliated as the University’s eleventh and its only postgraduate college. Bill Berry later formed and became President of the Past-Graduates and Post-Graduates Society Inc, a group who shared a vision for the College, establishing a trust fund later to become The William Berry Post-Graduate College Trust. Barbara concluded by quoting what she called his mantra, ‘PastGraduates for Post-Graduates’ and said she was proud to have shared his philosophy and vision. Past President, Frank Lees followed, and spoke of the achievements. In his dedication, Frank quoted the words of former Chairman, the late Noel Bergere at the time honorary life membership was conferred on Bill Berry; ‘There is one person who has been outstanding in his service to the Graduate Union and that is unquestionably our Secretary. For over thirty years he has been its guiding light; he fostered it; interested prominent graduates in it; and I daresay that every person has chosen to accept a position on this Council through Bill Berry’s siren song’. Mr Lees said he had also witnessed his skills in other areas such as property acquisition, saying it would be impossible for the present generation not to honour these achievements which had led ultimately to the new building on the Kidd’s Warehouse site. He quoted Dr Companies offering discounts to Robin Sharwood, former President and Graduate Union Members College Fellow: ‘The Graduate Union AudioLifeStyle, Australian Unity, still was and still is his enduring legacy Geoff Ireland Florist, Hertz, Pickford to the University community’. Pharmacy, Non-Profit Purchasing, He then unveiled the commemorative DeBortoli Wines plaque calling on those present to raise their glasses in a champagne toast to ‘The William Berry Wing and all postgraduate scholars who will reside here’. MEMBERS AND RESIDENTS CHRISTMAS PARTY
T
he Christmas Party on 16 December was a very festive affair. Eighty residents, members, Graduate House suppliers and friends celebrated the Christmas Season in fine style. Once again, Graduate House suppliers donated over one hundred prizes for the occasion and these were given out as prizes for the various activities throughout the evening and as always, Santa was in attendance to assist. The tables looked magnificent, thanks to the beautiful floral centerpieces, donated by Geoff Ireland, Florists to Graduate House, who was present on the night. At the conclusion of the party these were awarded to the oldest person at each table. The evening was full of surprises. ‘Hot Stuff’, a talented magician, produced birds from nowhere and ‘removed’ watches from wrists, intriguing the audience with his sleight of hand and magic tricks. Another highlight, and no doubt a first for Graduate House, was the appearance Nathia, an oriental Belly Dancer who, after giving a solo performance, invited many members of the audience to join her. Those invited joined in, many with great enthusiasm. Carol singing followed coffee when the last prizes of the evening were given to those confident enough to sing alone. Our thanks go once again to Albert Fox, who brought along an electronic keyboard and played carols throughout and accompanied the carol singers.

A
Christmas Dinner for all the staff was held on Saturday evening 26 November at The Calabrian Restaurant in Rathdowne Street Carlton. Following the main course, a rotund and jolly Santa visited for a short time to enjoy the undivided and close attention of each member of staff and duty resident in turn. The food was excellent, having been chosen especially for the event and the group relaxed and enjoyed a happy night after a very busy year.
