the inquisitorial system of Europe rather than continue to use our adversarial system. He believes that a combination of the two systems might be the best solution. "An advantage of the inquisitorial system" - David notes - "is that it is less expensive for the individual litigant. In our adversarial system, one or both parties may not want to get at the truth at all, and the more powerful litigant often has an advantage". He added - "when it works well, our adversarial system may get at the truth in a way that the inquisitorial system does not, because good barristers on both sides can bring out more. It also has the advantage that the judge is less likely to make up his mind early in the case and can change it in the face of opposing evidence' . David predicts that the debate about the merits of these two alternatives will grow over the next few years. Following the address, there was nearly a further half hour of questions from many of the 61 Members attending the luncheon, and the President was then warmly thanked by Council Vice-Chairman Joe Stanley, who chaired the luncheon meeting. Solo and Mono Graduates News 1997 was an eventful year for Mono and Solo Graduates with each Newsletter full of interesting social events. Apart from the very successful Friday social nights at Graduate House the popular bushwalks are usually well attended. There are always things for the sporting minded, such as bike rides, tennis and golf. Some volunteers enjoy orgamsmg restaurant nights whilst others very generously lend their homes for parties and entertain quite large numbers. During February the outdoor concerts at the Myer Music Bowl attract huge crowds and Solos and Monos always try to save space on the lawns for any member wanting to join them. November 21, 1997 saw the first wedding for Mono Graduates to be held Anne Joiner and Max Berry at Graduate House. Anne Joiner and Max Berry met at a social night for Monos and their wedding was celebrated with much festivity and happiness in a flower-filled House. Many members of both groups have met someone special and the Graduate Union encourages these couples to come along to some of the many functions organised by Graduate House for its members. Solo and Mono groups are a good way for people with the common interest of a University education to meet and socialise in a pleasant, non-threatening environment. PamAndressen Facilitator Page4

October 1997 The Reverend Peter Hill Peter, a former resident of Graduate House had members and guests enthralled with his talk on "The Egyptian Monasteries of the Waddy Natrun". He illustrated his talk with slides he had taken during his travels through the Middle East, of ancient Monasteries in Egypt, an archaeological dig and to the backblocks of Syria and Turkey. "Festive Season Functions" Since our last edition of the Melbourne Graduate we have had several highly successful functions. 1997 ended on a high note and 1998 is promising much of the same, or even better. Our members' Christmas Dinner attracted so many that a marquee was erected over the courtyard to accommodate the overflow from the dining rooms.
THE GRADUATE COUNCILÂ ELECTION OF FOUR MEMBERS Nominations are hereby called for the election of four Council members to hold office from the date of the Annual General Meeting to be held on Thursday 28 May 1998. Any vacancies occurring prior to the close of nominations will be included within this election. A proforma follows, but no special fonn is required. on Wednesday 11 March 1998 at4pm Our life Members - Ernestine Lobb & John Wright pictured in "Party Mode" at the Christmas Dinner. A barbeque was held in January and over 100 members and residents attended. John Sayers and Frank O'Brien did a great job on the barbeque. Marcelle Wood & Pam Andressen proved just as competent in the kitchen as they are in the office. All our staff worked cheerfully together to help make our Christmas functions such a success. Occupancy levels were once again 85% for 1997 and thirty six new members joined the Graduate Union from November 1, 1997 to January 31, 1998. Fran O'Brien
