1962 - 2012 : Fifty Year Celebration for Graduate House and William Berry Dinner Following the announcement in our April Newsletter, the plans for the Fifty Year celebration and Dinner to honour the founding Warden, William Berry are now taking shape. This will be an evening of “back to where it all began” when Graduate House commenced its journey to later become the Eleventh College of the University of Melbourne and to fulfil through the efforts of the graduates themselves the founding philosophy “Past Graduates for Post-Graduates”. We are delighted to report that family members of the early benefactors, Sir Frank Stillwell (Stillwell Room), Sir William Johnston (Johnston Library) and Magnus Anderson (Anderson Room), as well as members of the Berry Family will be our guests for this evening. As previously mentioned, after pre-dinner drinks in the Johnston Library in the William Berry Wing, and an inspection of refurbishment in the student study area, guests will adjourn to the Stillwell Room for dinner. The menu will resemble that served to students in the sixties, simply cooked with accompanying wines, some perhaps of that era as well. A heady mix maybe. The evening is complimentary for members and guests; bookings will open in midJune and further notification will follow.

MAY LUNCHEON reviewed The Chair of Graduate Council, David Sparks introduced Professor, The Honourable Gareth Evans. He gave background information of his many academic qualifications, his career as an academic lawyer, barrister and Queen’s Council until he entered Federal Parliament in 1978 as Senator for Victoria. Gareth Evans was a Member for Parliament for 21 years, ultimately becoming Foreign Minister in 1988, a portfolio he held until 1996. Diverging from his stated topic ‘Making Australian Foreign Policy: Who Matters?’ he confirmed what we already knew, that there is never a dull moment in politics! He entertained us with anecdotes about the various political issues and the personalities of the protagonists. Finally getting to the issue of foreign policy, Professor Evans posed a question about just who contributes to the making of foreign policy, saying that the process had been less than dull recently, in particular with the rise and fall of Kevin Rudd, and his resignation as Foreign Minister. He was concerned that the business community and academic institutions were not as influential as they should be, and that the public voice at large was rarely heard, except when things went wrong for Australians abroad with the event capturing the public interest. Although the media would like to think they are extremely influential, this is rarely the case. The real people who matter are the Foreign Minster and Prime Minister of the day. Professor Evans said that in order to survive, a Foreign Minister must accept and go along with the obsessions of the Prime Minister of the day, all the while praying the obsessions would be few, rational and manageable. Prime Minister Hawke’s obsession had been the creation of an exclusion zone in the Antarctic banning the exploration of oil and minerals, while Keating’s was to develop closer relationships with Indonesia. Thankfully, although very different in their approach, both Prime Ministers had been a pleasure to work with, Hawke being very orderly, and Keating extremely chaotic. Basically they both allowed him to get on with the job. Foreign Ministers have an extraordinary amount of leeway to develop their own foreign policy because PMs are so caught up with domestic issues and their political management. How successful are Foreign Ministers? Professor Evans named some of the important skills required; such as a capacity to take in a wide range of seemingly endless issues, all of which need to be understood and responded to, and a capacity to think creatively and recognize opportunities. Probably the most important is the ability to empathise, to see all perspectives of an issue, particularly the other person’s point of view and be able to communicate, persuade and be listened to. He talked about various politicians, both Liberal and Labor, who had filled the demanding portfolio, pointing out their successes and failures in regard to the required skills. He said that if Kevin Rudd were to bounce back into the limelight (and this could be possible given the current state of affairs), prioritising would be his big challenge. The most recently appointed Foreign Minister, Bob Carr asked Gareth Evans what would be the single most difficult problem he would encounter as Foreign Minister, and was advised that it would be ‘his mouth’, because, he said, Bob Carr would have the urge to say something interesting! It is incumbent on politicians to answer a different question to the one being asked, and Bob Carr will hate doing that. The secret is to be a dead bore! In conclusion, Professor Evans saw the current challenges for Australian Foreign Policy as: 1. The issues of security and the economy in relation to China and the USA 2. Recognising the reality of Asia Pacific and Australia’s relationship with India. 3. Australia’s relationships with Indonesia and the Pacific Islands 4. Recognising the real quality that Australia, as a middle power can bring to the wider global debate community, to help solve and be effective players in climate change, global security, terrorism, and where Australia can play an important role in world issues. In answer to questions from the floor, his view was that the impact of 9/11 had been exaggerated. While homeland security is a major issue, any threat from the Islamic world had been overstated and needed to be kept in perspective. He was optimistic about Burma’s future, although he saw the current situation as very fragile and its military intentions unknown. Jenny Davies has written the only comprehensive book about the architectural, social and cultural history of Flinders Street Station. She launched this in 2009 with the clear intention of promoting the station's centenary in 2010. Jenny extended her work to include a demanding series of talks and presentations throughout the state and, under the umbrella of "The Flinders Street Station Project" won the Melbourne Award for individual contribution to raising the awareness of our city. SUNDAY MUSIC CONCERT reviewed WILMA and FRIENDS Wilma Smith, concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and distinguished friends Daniel Kossov, Simon Oswell, David Berlin and Philip Arkinstall delighted members and visitors with a wonderful concert on April 15th in our Sunday afternoon series. The group excelled in a performance of Brahms’ great Clarinet Quintet which Wilma described as ‘the pinnacle’. Great waves of sound filled the room as the five instruments interwove, sometimes as an ensemble and sometimes in solo passages. The concert began with Dvorak’s Terzetto for two violins and viola, with its folk style Scherzo, and finished with number 4 of Haydn’s Opus 20 String Quartets, milestones in string quartet composition. We all enjoyed the lavish afternoon tea and the opportunity to socialise with the performers. It was a special occasion not to be forgotten. Our next concert on 17th June will be given by the exciting young Australian pianist Hoang Pham. Hoang will play Bach’s Partita No 2 and Chopin’s complete set of Preludes Op.28.
INFLUENZA VACCINATIONS AT GRADUATE HOUSE On 27th April, The Graduate Union took a step forward into the healthcare of its members and residents. In collaboration with The Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) and Vaccinations On-site, free Flu shots were made available to Graduate Union members and residents. The Influenza vaccination session was organised in the Johnston Library and Anderson Room at Graduate House on Friday, 27th April at 11.30am and a large number took up the offer in readiness for the flu season, among them former Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwong Lee Dow Kwong Lee Dow. Graduate House residents in particular took advantage of the opportunity with over 40 coming in to get their vaccination. A nurse was onsite to ensure adequate safety standards and monitor any untoward reaction to the procedure and tea, coffee and biscuits were provided. Dr Alan Hampson, Chairman of the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG), Mr Kim Sampson the Group’s CEO and Ms Susanne Sperber-Pflaumer, its Communications Specialist were present. Channel 9 covered the vaccination session. Amongst those interviewed was resident Mr Matthias Könning from Germany, and Dr Andrew Roberts, a former Councillor. The Vaccination session was broadcast over the 6 o clock news on Friday, 27th April as part of an awareness campaign about influenza and the benefits of vaccination. The Graduate Union would like to thank Mr Kim Sampson for bringing about this great initiative to The Graduate Union. Mr Sampson spoke about Influenza at the March luncheon at which time he offered the opportunity of this Vaccination Session to The Graduate Union’s members. We also thank ‘Vaccinations On-site’ for their assistance during the session.

Dr Harold Mitchell AC Topic: ‘Health’ Harold Mitchell is the founder of Mitchell & Partners and Executive Chairman of Aegis Media Pacific. Since he started Mitchell & Partners in 1976, the company has evolved to become the largest media and communications group in Australia today, with a growing presence in New Zealand and across the Asia-Pacific region. In December 2000, he launched the Harold Mitchell Foundation which distributes funds between health and the arts. He has been Chairman of the National Gallery Australia, President of the Melbourne International Festival of Arts, President of the Museums Board of Victorian and a Board Member of the Opera Australia Council. Mr Mitchell holds a large number of community roles including Chairman CARE Australia; Chairman of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; Chairman of ThoroughVision; Chairman and Owner of the Melbourne Rebels Rugby Union team; Chairman of TVS, University of Western Sydney’s television service for Greater Sydney; Chairman of Art Exhibitions Australia; Vice President of Tennis Australia. Mr Mitchell was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia in 2010 for eminent service to the community through leadership and philanthropic endeavours in the fields of art, health and education and as a supporter of humanitarian aid in Timor-Leste and Indigenous communities.

Despite aiming to “raise the political temperature”, the Monthly Argument takes the notion of argument very seriously and regards such things as shouting, ad hominem attack, personal abuse as having nothing in common with genuine argument. Debates are strictly moderated and people on all sides of a question are expected to play fair and to make a real attempt to justify their positions.

What is happening in Council? Over the past month Council: • has approved the inclusion in the General Regulations of a Council Code of Conduct as General Regulation 5. This document clearly sets out the Role of a Council Member and the expectations associated with the position. http://www.graduatehouse.com.au/membership/council-code-of-conduct/ • following the passing of a Parliamentary Bill which will significantly change the Associations Incorporation Act under whose rules The Graduate Union is bound, Council has agreed to set a date for a Rules Forum. The Stella Langford Wing I may have mentioned previously that due to the additional conference rooms on the ground floor of the new Stella Langford wing and the increasing popularity of the dining room, we are often embarrassed by a queue of people wishing to use the existing toilets. Fortunately due to the generous bequest from Dr Phillip Law we are able to have constructed additional toilets which will be accessible from the ground floor foyer in the Stella Langford wing. Under the guidance of the House Board Chairman Andre Cleghorn, the CEO and the Operations Manager the architectural plans have been finalised, three quotations obtained and a builder selected. The builder will start towards the end of this month and complete the project towards the end of August. Recognition of Dr Phillip Law’s Bequest The Graduate Union Council has been discussing ways to recognise the generosity of Dr Phillip Law, with one suggestion being to name an area within the buildings in his honour. Councillors Jane McKellar, Siôn Lutley and Andre Cleghorn are looking at the question of naming criteria generally and the areas within the buildings that lend themselves to such a proposal. The working party will report their findings to the June meeting of Council. Fundraising I would like to extend my personal thanks to those members who have given donations to The Graduate Union’s funds this year. Your generosity both with donations and with your time is greatly appreciated. Graduate House could not function as it does without you. Included with the Annual Report and election material which will be posted to you in early July, will be a circular which draws attention to our existing fundraising resources and introduces new opportunities for giving, some of which focus particularly on postgraduates from rural areas and overseas. 2012 Scholarship Applications for the Graduate House Research Scholarship have now closed and the House Board committee will be interviewing soon.
