WHAT’S HAPPENING IN GRADUATE COUNCIL? Because members are interested to know just what their Council is up to, we are including this new segment in the monthly newsletter entitled ‘What’s Happening In Graduate Council?’ Our website also has a new section about Council, an organisational chart and lists of who is on Council and on the different Committees. We hope that you have all now received the GU Calendar in the post and are up to date about what’s on for the year. This calendar illustrates the busy schedule of our governing body (Council) and the Committees over 2012. As this newsletter goes to print, members can be reassured that their Council is already active …. • in reviewing the election process through the newly formed ‘Governance and Policy Review Committee’. You will thus soon be receiving an ‘‘Election Kit’ which we hope will make it easier to understand the schedule and processes for nominations, voting and elections to Council. • in evaluating the very positive feedback from our residents about the late 2011 installation of the new reverse-cycle air-conditioning, electrical rewiring and energy saving switches. Our House Board has heard that ‘Yes’, these all worked through both the hail storms of Christmas day and the sweltering temperatures of early January! • through the Membership Committee, in exploring different means of strengthening an engaged membership, particularly through the use of social media. As can be seen from your 2012 calendar, an exciting program of collegiate functions is in store, and Council representatives hope to be present at each to meet and seek the views of members. • in strengthening the fiscal position and financial systems of The GU through the Accounting and Audit Committee.
The Graduate Union is a residential college and a centre for academic and professional development in Melbourne; as well as an association for graduates of all Universities across the world. Affiliated with The University of Melbourne as its eleventh college, The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne Incorporated is located on the corner of Grattan Street and Leicester Street, Carlton, just south of The University's main Parkville campus and in the vicinity of University Square. The unique feature of The Graduate Union is a focus on graduates. The 120 residents of Graduate House are post-graduate students (e.g. masters and doctoral) from all over the world; or post-graduate fellows and scholars visiting Melbourne on sabbatical, or as part of an education, research or professional development partnership with a university in Victoria. Our interest is in providing our Members and their guests with intellectual and social stimulation, by organising and hosting a variety of events.

Chairman’s Cocktail Party 9.12.2011 The year concluded with another impressive Chairman’s Cocktail party. The Chairman gave a brief report on the year of 2011 and a synopsis of progress in various areas. He also outlined plans for 2012 and into the future. He thanked the staff for their dedication and loyalty to the Graduate Union, in particular Lyn Weston who had taken ‘over the reins’ at the end of 2010 until the appointment of the new Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kerry Bennett whom he said had “hit the ground running” and had brought much needed change to the Graduate Union. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of $9000 from the Trustees of the William Berry Trust (Miss Barbara Funder and Mrs Heather Kudeviita) to the Chairman of the House Board (Mr Andre Cleghorn). This Trust continues to support the upkeep of the William Berry Wing and the ongoing maintenance and repairs to the Victorian terraces.

A second highlight was the unveiling of a series of art works celebrating the history of the Graduate Union. The result is stunning in its simplicity. Artist, Deidre Walsh has captured the essence of the Graduate Union in a series of sketches highlighting key events and people over the past century. A special touch to the evening was the serving of food which reflected the different eras shown in the artwork.

Member’s Christmas Party 16.12.2011 Approximately 30 residents joined members for a rousing conclusion to 2011 at the Members Christmas Party. The pace of the evening was a little different to past years with Vincent’s Rock and Roll Band
greeting the guests as they arrived. Some of the more conservative were more than a little taken aback by the change of rhythm, being more attuned to Christmas Carols of the Silent Night variety. However most were seen up dancing to the beat later in the evening and seemingly enjoying themselves immensely. Thanks to the generosity once again of the Graduate House suppliers there were many gifts to be won and few guests went home empty handed. The main prize of evening was a Harvey Norman Voucher to the value of $1000 and was won by member Margaret Mayers who unfortunately was not in attendance at the party to receive her prize. She has since been notified and has collected the voucher.

The dinner as always was delicious. A full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings was preceded by seafood and prosciutto and peach platters. All was complemented with free flowing wine. Vincent’s Band had arranged for members to have Rock and Roll Dance Lessons and instructors, Lynn and Lou had guests up on the floor learning some dance steps which they could practice later in the evening with spouses and other willing partners. There was much fancy footwork to be seen as the dancing continued into the evening. The Christmas Party was a fitting end to a very eventful year.

Funds raised help UnitingCare to provide practical support to people in need. In 2011 money raised through Pancake Day events was used to support a range of programs, from providing support to women who are isolated and lack the support networks they need, to providing nutritional meals to the most disadvantaged young children in our community.

PANCAKE DAY CHARITY EVENT At GRADUATE HOUSE 220 Leicester Street, Carlton
On 21st February 2012 between 7.30am and 11.30am Graduate House is participating in PANCAKE DAY to help raise funds for the homeless, abused and vulnerable children, adults, the frail aged, families in crisis and those with disabilities. The event is run by UnitingCare Victoria and Tasmania, one of the leading providers of services to people in need. UnitingCare is a network of large and small agencies with more than 7000 volunteers and a staff of 4000 who deliver various early childhood, aged and community services to more than 350,000 people annually. UnitingCare also gives a voice to the voiceless by listening to individuals and communities and offering research and advocacy. We are proud to support such a worthy cause, and hope that you will join us by coming to Graduate House on 21 February, eating a Pancake and thus making a donation on the day (every Pancake counts).
