Michael Jeffery AC, AO(Mil), CVO, MC(Retd)
Thursday 14 July 2011 Melba Hall, University of Melbourne 5.15pm for 5.30pm start Major General Michael Jeffery graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon into Infantry serving operationally in Malaya, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Military Cross and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After command of all combat elements of the Army, he headed both the logistics policy and equipment procurement branch of his Service before retiring in 1993 to assume the appointment of Governor of Western Australia. Three years later for services to the State, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) and on 1 April 2000 a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). From 2003 to 2008, he served as Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia where his key interests were in youth, education and landscape regeneration matters. He was formally appointed by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia and sworn in on 11 August 2003, becoming the first Australian soldier to become Governor-General. Currently, he is Chairman of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Future Directions International (FDI) and Outcomes Australia and an active Patron of some other 16 charitable organisations. Since 1999, Robin has led the transformation of the Museum Victoria’s research program; the development, management and conservation of the collection; and the development of long term exhibitions for Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum. He is responsible for the development of print publications, planetarium shows and online content. He has fostered a co-operative and collaborative culture to achieve success. Robin has been on the staff of the museum since 1981 and has played major roles in the development of Scienceworks, Melbourne Planetarium, the Immigration Museum and Melbourne Museum. He currently chairs the Victorian Arts Agencies Collections Working Group and serves on cultural committees of the University of Melbourne, RMIT and Deakin University. Jeffrey Rosenfeld is Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, Monash University and Director, Department of Neurosurgery the Alfred Hospital. He trained in general surgery and neurosurgery in Melbourne, Oxford, UK and Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He is Adjunct Professor to the Centre for Military and Veterans' Health, University of Queensland. He is a Major General and the Surgeon General Defence Health Reserves, Australian Defence Force. He joined the Army Reserve in 1984 and has served on seven overseas operations including Rwanda, East Timor, Bougainville, Solomon Islands and Iraq. He is a world authority on military trauma particularly neurotrauma. His research at Monash University is primarily on traumatic brain injury. He has published over 200 peer reviewed articles, chapters and a book. He is also the Chair of the Editorial Board of the 'ADF Health' which is the journal of the Defence Health Services and is on the Editorial Board of four international journals.
