In 2014 we are holding get togethers for all who graduated in the years up to and including 1960. These gatherings will be held on Sundays over a traditional lunch in the dining room and Phillip Law Members’ Lounge.

Be sure to book well in advance for your graduation group – the engineers of 1951, the medicos of 1954, the teachers of 1957, the lawyers of 1958, etc. - and don’t forget that this is for graduates of any university. These luncheons are at Members’ prices and for Members, non-members and their families. We hope that you will begin preparation now by spreading the word to friends and family in Melbourne and across the world to give them the best opportunity to book flights, accommodation and their place. Send in photographs (which we promise to return) and short stories. We shall have a Reminiscence Presentation with focus on the time, and on ‘graduate pathways’ of the attendees – careers, families, challenges and achievements. Should you choose to bring photographs on the day, we shall have photo boards for you to display and explain your memories and experiences at and since graduation. The Graduate Union is a welcoming and friendly membership association so do not be afraid to come on your own or to bring along non-alumni friends and family. We hope also that members will work together to ensure that those who find it difficult to travel these days are supported in being able to attend.

The Women’s Forum Salient points from the “The Value of Play” forum on the 16th of October included: • The word play has many meanings and applications though its derivations from other languages seem to place emphasis on the concept of joy as in taking part in games for enjoyment. Small children seem to understand this instinctively. • The word play is frequently used in the realm of sporting activities (e.g., rain stopped play; play resumed after the break). Play beyond childhood is constrained by rules and regulations and an increased competitive element. • Primary school, mid-morning playtime provides children with an opportunity to release energy and let go of the constraints of classroom behaviour. • Children these days play with factory-made toys and computer games.These may benefit hand-eye coordination but do not always encourage the imagination and spontaneous creativity involved in climbing a tree or building a cubby house! • Older children reaching teenage years tend to communicate with friends via mobile phone texts or social media, like facebook. The valuable lessons to be learned from facial expressions, body posture and tone-of-voice are lost. • Younger children frequently mirror the roles played by the adults around them (e.g. being a mother or father. a shopkeeper, a doctor or nurse, etc.) This is as obvious as in the animal kingdom where the young play most of the time while learning the valuable survival skills that will serve them well in maturity. • There is a possible link between increasing childhood obesity and the decrease in active games of the past such as skipping and hopscotch. At a later age, the use of drugs as a substitute for the “highs” that used to come from involvement in and enjoyment of active games. • Sometimes “games” can get out of hand if taken over by strong or manipulative personalities such as Jack in “Lord of the Flies”. Adults observing or supervising children’s games need to be alert to this. • Finally, the stimulation and fun that can be part of spontaneous, creative “play” at any age (e.g. line dancing) is infectious and is, perhaps, the key to happiness. We recalled the adage from the past; “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’’!

Our thanks are extended to Resident Member Louise McLeod for sharing her ‘graduate pathway’ story at the October Meet and Greet and for taking up a Duty Resident position recently. Louise is to be congratulated also for receiving a 2013 Vice-Chancellor’s Engagement Award for her contribution to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education Engagement Project with the Royal Children’s Hospital Education Institute. Together with two others who are undertaking the Master of Teaching (Primary), she will be using the University Dreamlarge grant to work with The Royal Children’s Hospital on the November Jumbunna (‘storytelling’ in Wurundjeri) Film Festival, to give patients the opportunity to take part in a wide range of learning activities. Non-resident Member and Dentist Gayathree Alagirsiwamy, who was in residence May 2013 for a Royal Dental Hospital Orientation Training Course, not only gave a wonderful ‘gradate pathway’ story but invited all residents to take part in the Darebin Relay for Life, 16th and 17th November to raise money for cancer research. Our thanks are extended also to her volunteer colleague Filomena Mifsud who outlined how our Members could contribute as volunteers, as walkers or simply to participate in the host of activities on show for the weekend. Since leaving Graduate house in 2007, Grant McKenzie graduated from the University of Melbourne’s Department of Geomatics with a Masters of Applied Science in GeoInformatics to then take up a geospatial software developer position at the engineering consulting firm CH2M Hill in Seattle. Taking a calculated risk, he left CH2M Hill in 2009 to start a consulting firm “Spatial Development International” with three colleagues; and is now also undertaking doctoral stuides at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was amazed to see the significant changes since his time here in college during his recent visit to Melbourne.

Well done In addition to welcoming Dr Deborah Seifert, to membership, we thank her for presenting at the October Meet and Greet to invite resident Members to join AIIA’s ACCESS (which is for students and younger professionals) and to come along to the many interesting talks that AIIA hosts in Victoria at Dyason House, on Jolimont Road. For those not from Melbourne, this is within easy walking distance of Jolimont station (one station away from Flinders Street station).
We have in our residential college the very best, brightest and dedicated. All have worked diligently and studiously throughout 2013 and deserve a well-earned rest. We shall see some of you next year and others when you revisit us sometime during your graduate pathway.

Reciprocal Association Profile Faculty Club Utrecht University The Netherlands Situated in the middle of The Netherlands (Holland) and about thirty minutes by train from Amsterdam, the Faculty Club is housed in a medieval solid stone building behind University Hall of Utrecht University and next to the Pandhof (the courtyard monastery garden of Cathedral Tower). Achter de Dom 7 (meaning ‘behind the duomo’) was built in the 1400s as a claustral house for a canon of the View of the Club from the garden Dom Cathedral in the centre of this ancient mediaeval city. After accommodating for various occupant types over many centuries - canons, prisoners, police officers and governors - Utrecht University began using the building in 1867 for academic purposes, converting it in 1998 for its current use as the ‘Lounge’, the local term used by the membership for their Club. On your visit to Utrecht, we recommend that you use the ‘Lounge’ as the base for day trips exploring the many Early Middle Ages buildings and structures of the city to learn more about why this city has been the religious centre of the Netherlands since the 8th century. Because The Graduate Union has reciprocal rights with the Faculty Club you will be provided with access to their dining and bar facilities, as well as to areas where you can simply Street view of the Club rest. Should you be on university business, the Faculty Club is where the academic community meets up on a day to day basis, as well as when entertaining visiting guests. Like The Graduate Union, the Faculty Club also hires out rooms for meetings and functions, and hosts eight to ten events each year for its members (the equivalent of our GU Collegiate functions). Graduate Student Association (GSA) is the graduate student union at The University of Melbourne. Since 2002, GSA has been publishing Traffic, an annual periodical for postgraduate research students to present their work to a broader audience beyond their departmental peers. Traffic is a double-blind, peer-reviewed journal with published articles meeting Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) refereeing requirements and shown in full on the major searchable databases of research across the world. The 2013 edition, entitled Refresh: Revisit, revive, revolt, will be launched at the Gryphon Gallery (1888 Building) 5.00pm to 7.00pm on the 12th November. A $1,000 prize will be presented to the author of the issue’s best essay. We wish all the very best of luck to the Graduate Union resident and non-resident Members who have published in this 2013 edition - $1,000 would be just recognition for your hard work and excellence.

We now see the spectacular ‘glass wave’ Alan Gilbert building dwarfing the row of terraces on Barry Street (mirroring those of our William Berry Wing) on the other side of a beautifully maintained square (under which is the multi-floor car park of The University of Melbourne). If you have not visited for a while, please do so on your way to one of the free public lectures. University Sector News Honour for Historian
The Graduate Union congratulates world renowned historian Professor Geoffrey Blainey who will be awarded the University of Melbourne’s inaugural Tucker Medal, in recognition of his substantial contributions to the University, the Faculty of Arts and to public life. The prestigious award is named after prolific and celebrated scholar and the foundation Dean of the University’s Faculty of Arts, Thomas George Tucker (1859-1946). Professor Blainey was a student at The University of Melbourne in 1948 and later served in senior leadership roles in both the Faculty of Commerce and the Faculty of Arts. He became the Dean of the Faculty of Arts in the 1980s and is well noted for his support of younger colleagues across the disciplines and his passion for teaching. Many of you may also remember Professor Blainey’s informative Twilight Lecture at Graduate House earlier this year on the rather challenging task of writing the history of the world. In 2000 Professor Blainey was made a Companion of the Order of Australia. In 2007 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law from the University of Melbourne. The Tucker Award will be officially bestowed on Professor Blainey at a graduation ceremony held at University of Melbourne in December. Nutters’ Drawer is relocated
Professor Germaine Greer is down sizing, and (in her words) the nutters’ drawer from her archive will come to The University of Melbourne next year. Professor Greer said the university snapped up the archive after years of negotiations with another institution had failed. The archive includes letters from family, friends, writers, artists, academics, broadcasters, editors, scholars, critics, politicians, neighbours and many others. Chancellor Elizabeth Alexander said the collection would draw academics and students to the University to study the files. “It is a great new collection from one of the university’s most illustrious alumni” Professor Greer intends for the proceeds to go to her charity, the Friends of Gondwana Rainforest, which she set up to highlight the remnant rainforests of the ancient continent of Gondwana. She lives for three months of the year at the Cave Creek Rainforest Rehabilitation Scheme in Queensland and the rest of the time in Britain. A Solemn Scholarship
Bridget and Alexander Jones were two of those killed when a wall in Swanston Street fell and crushed them in March this year. A heartbreaking story, the brother and sister live on in the memories of their family members, friends and all those touched by the tragedy. According to Principal Allan Robinson, the aim of these two-year scholarships is to foster the sort of passion for learning that was shared by Alexander and Bridget. The scholarship idea was instigated and funded by the local Bendigo and Adelaide Bank from which Mr Jones, the student’s father, retired following the tragedy. A committee consisting of representatives from Montmorency Secondary College, The University of Melbourne and the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank will award the scholarships based on merit and need. India to Mars in Ten Months
The western space race has long since ended. The decommission of many NASA projects and the launch of the Mars rover Curiosity was seen as the end of an era in space exploration. But perhaps not. Over 500 scientists, $73 million and fifteen months of sleepless work has led the Indian Space Research Organisation to be confident in launching its unmanned satellite into the orbit of Mars. The trip has been seen as a ‘natural progression’ following the successful unmanned Chandrayaan mission in 2008 that brought back the first decisive evidence of water once existing on the moon. To analyse the thin Mars atmosphere of methane gases, the satellite has been fitted with a colour camera for taking surface pictures and a thermal imaging spectrometer to map mineral wealth. Countering speculation that the launch is part of a so-called space race with China, whose Mars satellite failedin2011,orJapanwhichfailedinasimilareffortin1998,SKShivakumar,DirectorofIsro’sBangladorebased satellite centre explains: If the Mars mission succeeds, it will be a big morale booster for India. Large, toothy and odd
With the discovery of a tooth in limestone, Rebecca Pian, a Columbia University palaeontology PhD student working with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has identified a new but now extinct species of platypus. Named Obdurodon tharalkooschild to reflect Greek for large tooth and the aboriginal legend of a female duck bearing children after being set upon by Bigoon, a water-rat, the one-metre long platypus is hypothesised to have roamed Queensland’s north-west waterways five to 15 million years ago using rows of sharp and very large teeth in its beak to devour crayfish, frogs and small turtles. The modern day platypus is a shy and interesting mammal, about a third of the length of this newly discovered species, which lays eggs and lives in the rivers of eastern Australia. Progress with the constitution Members have been informed over the past year of the intent for The Graduate Union to transition from an incorporated association (registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria under the new Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012) to a company limited by guarantee registered under the Corporations Act 2001, which is Commonwealth legislation administered by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. As you know, your Council has been working diligently and carefully on this initiative. At its 22nd October, 2013 meeting the decision was made to defer implementation of this transition. Thank you to those Members who came along to the consultation forums on the 7th and 14th August. Your support in ensuring that we develop the very best and most appropriate constitution is important to us, and to continuing this period of growth, sustainability and reputational enhancement. We will inform you further of developments in the new year.

Rising from an initial appointment as Junior Draftsman in a small structural engineering practice known as Cyril Hudspeth and Associates, John’s engineering career was punctuated with military service during WW2 where he was progressively promoted from Private to Major by discharge. The untimely passing of Cyril Hudspeth in 1956 caused John to take up the responsibility and ownership of the practice. Over the succeeding years, he developed a major multi-disciplinary practice which has made a significant impact in Australia and internationally.
Beyond engineering endeavours, John’s community service has ranged from Board positions at the Austin Hospital, to the Zoological Board of Victoria, the former Gas and Fuel Corporation and Ivanhoe Grammar School. Other community services include The Engineering Faculty at The University Luncheon in the Johnston Library of Melbourne and as Grand Master of United Freemasons of Victoria. John responded that leadership succeeds when the team performs in unison to produce a greater outcome and the delegated trust benefits all. Member Jennifer Gill is pictured here conducting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Southern Cross Station on the 22nd October. One of about 60 others who were invited from the general public to conduct the 40 musicians as one, Jennifer was true to the ‘apotheosis of the dance’, requiring the orchestra to sit and stand while performing Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. There were several Asian Consul Generals at the function and they, as well as all the other guests, commented on the excellent choice, quality and quantity of the foods prepared for the Supper. It allowed me to get everything organised without stress. I could totally rely on Graduate House staff and though we had to make date changes and, even up to the last minute, did not know exactly how many people would attend the conference, Graduate House staff accommodated these inconveniences expertly. They could not have made it any easier for us at all. The feedback from conference delegates was extremely positive and they said that everything was just right for the type and size of the conference. The delegates felt that they were a real science family that had the opportunity to come together in a warm atmosphere venue. The function rooms were fine and the setup was good, including the changeover to combining the rooms during lunch break of the first day. The food was very good and we did not get any complaints at all about quality and quantity. Specific dietary requirements were all met to the satisfaction of the people. The staff was very helpful and adaptive. Thank you all so much. It was a pleasure to deal with you all. Accommodation outside the academic year, either late November to December, or in the early part of next year before semester begins. Many of our conferences are held at the end and the beginning of each year. Reasons span from less populated campuses, holiday periods for academics and because Melbourne is an ideal place to escape the cold northern hemisphere winter. We would like once again to offer our out-ofacademic-year college rates for conference delegates visiting Melbourne. Our College is in the heart of the graduate precinct of The University of Melbourne and can cater for various budgets - from student (rooms with shared bathrooms) to professorial (self-contained apartments). Since advertising this out-of-academic year offer, we have had a tremendous response. To avoid disappointment, we advise conference leaders to tell conference delegates to book well in advance. Delegates who are not members but attending a conference in Melbourne, can choose to stay for a maximum of seven nights. If you have graduated from any university in the world, you are eligible to become a member and may then enjoy lower accommodation rates and become part of The Graduate Union’s vibrant international collegium of graduates.
