Diamond Jubilee Campaign Graduate House, as the only dedicated postgraduate residential college of The University of Melbourne, commemorated our 60th anniversary in 2017 by opening the next chapter in the life of our historic building. Our Diamond Jubilee Campaign will see us construct a new, 11-storey above ground and fivebasement below-ground residential building with 136 new rooms to double our current quality accommodation capacity and continue to provide a vibrant collegiate environment for our Resident Members. Graduate House maintains a high average level of occupancy but, in its current form, is unable to meet market demands for postgraduate housing. The planning permit for the redevelopment has been approved by the Melbourne City Council.

Graduate House is a “home away from home” Graduate House provides a “home away from home”, a warm, safe and welcoming environment in which postgraduates can flourish and focus on their studies. We help postgraduates deal with many of the issues faced by graduate students: • loneliness and isolation • absence of family and friends for support • language skills • cultural integration and homesickness • finances • vulnerability in a new country/state • commuting • poor accommodation • unhelpful study environment • unavailability of groups for study and assignments • lack of facilities, e.g., wi-fi • unscrupulous landlords • victimisation, racism, sexism, other ‘ism’s • mental health issues • health and safety • absence of a social life.

Who We Are/History
A group of graduates meet at no. 105 Collins St to discuss the founding of an association and residential club. The Melbourne University Graduates Association is born. The inaugural Chairman is Sir John Monash.
Philanthropist Sidney Myer gives an endowment which ensures the continuance (a tradition continuing to this day) of Monthly Luncheons.
The Gladstone Terrace, in Leicester Street Carlton, is purchased.

Founding member Sir Robert Menzies becomes honorary Secretary‑Treasurer.
First publication of our bi-yearly magazine, the Melbourne Graduate. These original issues are housed in the State Library of Victoria.
Graduate House is first opened as a residential college, housing seven graduates.
Donations from Stella Mary Langford enable the purchase of three further terraces, from 210 to 214 Leicester Street.
Graduate House is affiliated as the eleventh residential college of The University of Melbourne. It remains the University’s sole graduate-only college.
A generous donation from the Ian Potter Foundation enables the improvement of our dining and meeting facilities.
The redeveloped Stella Langford Wing is opened, providing three meeting rooms, self‑contained residential apartments, and a multi‑storey carpark.

Graduate House grows further, with the third stage of terraces opened.
Kidd’s Warehouse, at 216–220 Leicester Street is purchased. In 2005, the site is redeveloped to form the current middle-wing of the college.
The central fourstorey college wing is opened to residents, on the former site of Kidd’s Warehouse.

Our Vision and Mission
We aim to acknowledge the privilege of education by fostering a collegium of graduates which work together across cultures, disciplines and life stages for the good of society. We enable postgraduate students to successfully focus on their degrees without worries about their basic needs – food and accommodation. Graduate House, as the only dedicated postgraduate residential college in Victoria, is uniquely placed to fill this gap in provision left between the public and private sectors. We have fulfilled this specialised, yet necessary, role for 60 years and want to continue With Melbourne being a premium destination for aspiring postgraduate students, we see great potential to build on the unique role we already play in Melbourne’s tertiary education landscape. We provide nourishing meals, collegiate events, multiple networking and engagement opportunities, and a homely experience.

Our Redevelopment Schedule To reach our target and keep to our redevelopment schedule, we are calling on our generous and committed Members, whose financial support we have partly relied upon throughout our history. However, the Diamond Jubilee Campaign is a special project of a singularly grand scale for our organisation. To realise it, we will need to look beyond our usual funding bases. Acknowledgement of Gift — Naming The Graduate Union and Graduate House have a proud history of support from our Members and a strong culture of recognising our generous benefactors. Supply and Demand of Graduate Accommodation The demand for graduate accommodation is ever increasing and will always exceed supply. Graduate House can always be relied upon to help with this demand, but the redevelopment is essential to keeping up with the demand. Future demand for postgraduate education in Australia is predicted to increase in the foreseeable future.

Graduate House was a launching pad for my professional career. When I first arrived at Graduate House for a literature conference, I was blown away by the energy of the place.

Graduate House opened my eyes by giving me new experiences, new knowledge and opportunities to meet new people. If I described Graduate House in five words I would say, ‘love’, ‘friendship’, ‘food’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘giving back’.
Coming from India, I actually was a little nervous because I thought it was going be difficult, and it was for a couple of days maybe. But just because of the environment, just because everybody sits in the same place and talks, and, everyone was just so welcoming. So, I made friends really fast. And it was kind of comforting.
Graduate House is like another family to me. You can meet lots of people from different countries and who share different values, but we really have something in common. That’s friendship and also honesty, integrity that we share, and it’s really nice to see this organisation is bringing all different kinds of minds together and having a positive impact on our world.

It’s a place where many other people gather to just collaborate and keep learning and growing, so I think that it’s the place to have meetings. And the organisation also cares about solving the world’s issues, and you can sense that feeling of support and interest in what you come and do here, and what you talk about.

Cassandra: This is a great experience to be here because we get to meet so many different cultures and talk with so many different people on different subjects. Every night you just eat with somebody else.
We’re looking for strong support to make that happen for so many people who are coming forward in the academic life, and who will in their own lives achieve so much more from the foundation that we helped build for them. In the future, we’re looking forward to an opportunity to take that forward on a much larger scale, with much better facilities, to reach out to thousands more people.

I think that where Graduate House really helps the world, or changes the world, is by allowing students to achieve their best while they’re spending time at universities around Melbourne, such as Melbourne University.
It’s about interacting with people, about personal and professional development. You can be sitting next to anyone: fellow students, a professor from the University, or an industry professional. Interacting with all of these people, you learn so much, and when you’re sitting next to anyone who is from another part of the world — the cultural exchange — it is amazing!
Graduate House is only going to grow in size as the Australian education sector grows. It’s really a natural development.
