WHAT’S HAPPENING IN GRADUATE COUNCIL? This segment commenced in the last newsletter and we hope that from it you will progressively become aware of the main activities which the Council undertakes. This month we commence the election process which concludes with the Annual General Meeting in May at which new members are welcomed to the Council. Included in this edition of the newsletter you will find the ‘Call for Nominations’ form. Should you decide to nominate for election to the Council, the ‘Election Kit’ is available from the Returning Officer or from Graduate House. Please be aware that nominations close on 21st of March 2012 at 4pm. Council meets every second month and the five other Committees of Council meet between times. Council doesn’t meet at all between December and February, so this would normally be a sparse time for news. However, this year there was a special meeting on 31 January on which I can report as this meeting provided final endorsement to the “Election Kit” and debated and passed the Graduate Union Budget for 2012. The key items in the election kit are:1. Improved nomination form. 2. More detail from candidates as to their skills or knowledge which can be contributed to the Graduate Union. 3. Recognition that the Council needs a mix of skills and experience. 4. A code of conduct for councillors. This is also on our website. 5. Principles to be followed if election material is issued to members on behalf of a candidate. The budget for 2012 has been prepared to reflect the core sections of our operation, changed organisational structure and governance. We anticipate an income of $M3.36 and a very small deficit result. Remember that the Graduate Union is a not for profit organisation. David Sparks, Council Chair
THE DIABETES SERIES by CEO Professor Kerry Bennett

reviewed… The focus of the discussion was on gaining a basic level of understanding about type 2 diabetes, the lifestyle related diabetes which is now highly prevalent throughout the world, and related to multiple factors associated with urbanisation – over-processed food intake, sedentary work, social lives and increased meal sizes. Attendees learnt that this form of chronic diabetes is an ongoing condition marked by high blood glucose (sugar) levels. It is often very difficult to diagnose - for many developing over several years but showing no symptoms at all; or progressively subtle changes such as an increases in frequency of urinating, and feelings of hunger and thirst. They also learnt that a complex and multiple array of factors contribute to people getting type 2 diabetes and that it is important for our societies as a whole to learn about and address these factors. As Professor Bennett highlighted, the current high and rapidly increasing number of people suffering the complications of type 2 diabetes – heart attacks, amputations, blindness, liver and kidney failures, strokes – cannot possibly be helped effectively by health services in the very near future. Although numbers were low, the audience was participative and enjoyed the talk. The event was attended by two Council members, two residents and four members, plus one interested member of staff and some stayed on for dinner and further discussion. Professor Bennett urged the intelligent members of The Graduate Union to learn more about type 2 diabetes and use their collective skills and influence in national and international networks to face this global creeping disaster systematically. At the next Diabetes session on Wednesday 11th April from 5.00pm she will talk to the dietary influences on type 2 diabetes and on the societal preventative measures that need to be tackled. The Monthly Argument was launched in 2010 at the Dan O’Connell Hotel and this year will take place at Graduate House. The aim is to create ‘a pub debate with a difference’ and is unashamedly in favour of sharp, heated debate. The Monthly Argument is not "a political conversation, dialogue, or consensus style discussion, and completely unlike the public talks at which well-known pundits and public intellectuals deliver their views to an audience of supporters. Despite aiming to “raise the political temperature”, the Monthly Argument takes the notion of argument very seriously and regards such things as shouting, ad hominem attack, personal abuse as having nothing in common with genuine argument. Debates are strictly moderated and people on all sides of a question are expected to play fair and to make a real attempt to justify their positions. The flu season begins this month. Kim will talk to us about the different flu strains we can expect to encounter and how we can prepare. Kim Sampson is the CEO of the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) and Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Alliance for the Control of Influenza (APACI). He was born in Adelaide and has spent the past 30 years based in Melbourne. He started his health administration career as the finance and laboratory manager for the Baker Institute in the early 80’s. His subsequent roles have included National Administration Manager for the Australian Brain Foundation, Business Manager at Southern Health, a Member of the Board of Monash Institute for Neurological Diseases, and General Manager at Neurosciences Victoria. Kim also worked as a consultant for a number of private firms in a variety of industries, from financial services to manufacturing. He has also taught financial management for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons training program. He is a full member of the Australasian Performance Rights Association, manages Akimbo Music in his spare time and is the Honorary Treasurer of the Australia-Vietnam Friendship Society.
ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS January / February March Bookings A successful start to the New Year with a 3 day event 17th – 19th January 2012 organized by Melbourne Materials Institute for the MMI Diamond Photonic Symposium. Leading scholars from Harvard University, Australian Universities and a number of World Leading Institutions came to Graduate House to discuss current research. Starting with a welcoming reception, the two-day seminar and poster sessions were a roaring success followed by a Gala Dinner. Presenters from Australia, USA, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, Israel & UK joined delegates from more than 12 universities, research centres and commercial companies for the 2012 MMIHarvard Diamond Photonics Symposium. The Rotary Club Of Carlton meets every Tuesday at 12.45pm lunch with a special speaker. The Club celebrated Australia Day at their first meeting for 2012 on 24 January2012.

February Luncheon (reviewed) Caroline Chisholm burst into the monthly luncheon in February and commenced a spirited discourse about her outstanding life of service. Mrs Chisholm was a progressive 19th-century woman who, seeing a need in society, set out to meet that need. It is easy to see why she appeared for many years on the Australian $5 note. Although her good deeds were not confined to Australia, she is known mostly for her involvement with female immigrant welfare in Australia’s early days. When still a child, her father took a maimed soldier into his house, pointing out to his children their obligations to the man who had fought for them. There is little doubt this led to the sense of responsibility that was the basis of Mrs Chisholm's life work.

Wilma Farrow, aka Caroline Chisholm, is a great admirer of women who have made a difference and she is determined they will not be forgotten. Wilma is a frustrated Shakespearean actress whose dreams of a career on the stage ended with the birth of her children. However, she is now using her dramatic talents to play feisty women of renown, such as Caroline Chisholm and Vida Goldstein. She has lately added Louisa Lawson, Henry’s mother, to her repertoire. At the request of the guests attending, who were both educated and entertained by her performance, Wilma has been invited to introduce Louisa Lawson to the Graduate Union later this year – probably at the November luncheon. Stay tuned! REUNION AT GRADUATE HOUSE A group of old friends met on January 7th to enjoy an informal lunch at Graduate House. Many of those present were architects who started their course at Melbourne University in 1953. At that time the School of Architecture was housed in a collection of ex Army huts on the east side of the avenue of palms which led from Grattan Street to the old quadrangle. The Victorian Gothic Wilson Hall was a ruin having been destroyed by fire, Our year of about thirty students included four girls who were all present at the lunch: Gwyn Dickens and Dorothy Weigall, who later became a social worker, Jan Quail and husband Geoff, and Nell Rickard who turned to landscape architecture in Sydney. Others who joined us were Bruce Gifford and his wife Dione, Charles Colville, who was here from London on an annual visit and Robin Cuming, who on graduation turned to acting in the UK and Australia and also social work. We didn't all stick to architecture! Anne Colville (Charles' sister-in-law) who travelled from Sydney with Nell, began the course a couple of years later than the rest of us, and Hugh O' Neil, a couple of years earlier, completed the party. THE GRADUATE UNION – COUNCIL Call for Nominations Nominations are hereby called for the election of four Council members to hold office for three years from the date of the Annual General Meeting to be held on Thursday 31st May 2012.
