GLAMOUR

Abstract

This research is about the role models as subjects and the architectural space that is cultivated for them. ‘Glamour’ is the main concept analyzed, as a form of social power and transformation, and is studied historically. Further, the concept of ‘Domesticity’ is analyzed in association with the transformation of the modern house from shelter to personal commodity, according to the gender roles of its age. Meanwhile, the psychological effect of Glamour is studied, based on the studies of envy, emulation and sublimation. To conclude, Honeymoon Resorts in Pocono’s are showcased as the prime example for a performative gendered architecture.

Why Glamour?

The term of Glamour is studied further from its everyday use and is generalized to a vaguer aesthetic quality that rebrands spaces, people and situations as desirable. It has immediate connotations to status and prestige, mechanisms of mimesis and the promise for social transformation through role models. Through Glamour, a lifestyle becomes a role model and a space becomes a manufactured personal utopia.
