This research investigates contemporary housing through the lens of social acceleration and ephemerality that characterize contemporary ways of living. Within a context of constant transformation, where identities, social structures, and modes of dwelling are continuously reconfigured, housing continues to be predominantly designed as a static and predefined spatial object. This incompatibility leads to the crisis of contemporary housing, as its fundamental principles, such as the relationship between space and the user’s lived experience, are progressively weakened.
The research focuses on the role of flexible architectural design as an alternative framework capable of responding to the needs of ephemeral and changing users. Through a theoretical approach to flexibility, with central reference to John Habraken’s theory of the Support & Infill distinction, in combination with the eight fundamental flexibility tactics proposed by Gharavi Alkhansari, the study explores how housing can be understood as an open and evolutionary system, capable of integrating the dimension of time.
At the same time, the analysis of selected architectural case studies highlights the way in which the theoretical framework of flexibility is translated into specific spatial strategies, allowing for gradual transformation, adaptability, and the active participation of inhabitants in the configuration of their living space. The findings of the research demonstrate that flexible design does not constitute merely a technical solution, but rather a meaningful means of redefining housing as a place of meaning-making, capable of reflecting the dynamic and changing character of contemporary human experience, enabling the formation of spaces of identity even under conditions of instability, ephemerality, and social change, thereby re-establishing the sense of “home”.
