The Triumph of Grace: Romans 1--8

Lesson Eight--Page 27

Lesson Eight--Romans 6:1--7:6 Why Christians serve God 6:1-4 Through Baptism we died and rose with Christ Verses 1-3 The sinful nature likes to pervert what Paul said in 5:20,21. It reasons, If grace increases when sin increases, then let's sin some more. Paul explains why this reasoning is wrong. In what way did we die to sin?

Verse 4 According to this verse, why do we have a changed attitude about serving the Lord? Give a short summary statement.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (EHV) 17So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. The new has come!

In verses 5-11 Paul is not telling us that we should do something. He is reminding us of what Christ has done for us and the fact that we have been joined with Jesus by faith in his work for us. Note and discuss the various ways Paul talks about us as new creations: Verse 5 We have been ______________ _______________________ in his death. We are also united with him in his

Through Baptism we were joined with Christ in his death and resurrection. In him we live a new life in service to God.

Verse 6 Our ______________________ 6:5-11 A full list of what we have become in Christ It is not just that we should serve the Lord. Yes, because we still have our sinful nature clinging to us and because we are still struggling with it, we can use the word should. But there is a sense in which we are serving our Lord and never need to be told that we should serve him. Because we are in fact released from sin, death, and hell, we have become “new creations” through faith in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. (See 2 Corinthians 5:17.)
