MAUNDY THURSDAY Maundy Thursday (from the La n ‘mandatum’, meaning “command,� John 13:34) recalls Christ’s ins tu on of Holy Communion at the Last Supper on the night in which he was betrayed. During the Passover meal, Jesus gave the disciples his body and blood together with the bread and wine. SILENT PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord, we come into your presence with penitent hearts, for we sin daily and deserve your punishment. Yet, Lord, you encourage us to come to your Table and remember what you have accomplished for us on the cross. May your body and blood, given and poured out for us, comfort our guilt-ridden hearts with the assurance of forgiveness. Give us strength to remain faithful in the midst of life’s challenges. SCRIPTURE LESSON Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house un l morning. When the L?@A goes through the land to strike down the Egyp ans, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down. “Obey these instruc ons as a las ng ordinance for you and your descendants. When you enter the land that the L?@A will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. And when
Exodus 12:21-30 your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the L?@A, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyp ans.’ ” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. The Israelites did just what the L?@A commanded Moses and Aaron. At midnight the L?@A struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyp ans got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.

On the ďŹ rst day of the Fes val of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacriďŹ ce the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make prepara ons for you to eat the Passover?â€? So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make prepara ons for us there.â€? The disciples le=, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. While they were reclining at the table ea ng, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is ea ng with me.â€? They were
saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?� “It is one of the Twelve,� he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. The Son of Man will go just as it is wriHen about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! DISTRIBUTION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER Tonight we celebrate the Lord's Supper. Jesus urges all who receive it to do so in a worthy manner in order to receive the blessings he promises. He also gives warning that no one receive it to their judgment. For this reason, we prac ce Member Communion. Tenebrae (La n for ‘darkness’) is a devo onal service based on various phases of our Lord’s pilgrimage from the Upper Room to the Cross. It is intended to bring to mind and heart the closing hours of Jesus’ Passion by recrea ng the unforgeHable in word and symbol. As the service progresses, darkness is gradually produced by the ex nguishing of lights and candles, symbolizing the darkness which surrounded the cross at Calvary.
