The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Sahuarita, Arizona

February 6, 2022

Welcome to Grace! Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service. Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org

Worship Notes We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The worship service is printed in its entirety in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Those wishing to leave an offering can do so at the exit today or give online at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/give. (You can also scan the QR code to the right to access the online giving page.) Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these new worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. Our Epiphany Series—Uncovered We are in the season of the church year called Epiphany, a Greek word that means “to appear.” Salvation has appeared in the person of Jesus Christ. In Epiphany, the church explores everything that Christ makes apparent about God. You see, we need God to appear to us and make himself known to us. For not only is God beyond our understanding, his works and ways are contrary to mankind’s natural assumptions about him. In other words, the truth of God cannot possibly be discovered by us. Rather, it needs to be uncovered for us. That’s what the Spirit is doing for us during this season of Epiphany. Week after week, surprising truths about Jesus our King and life in his kingdom will be uncovered. ANOINTING UNCOVERED: What the eye sees differs from what God decrees DELIGHT UNCOVERED: God delivers more than we ask, not less RECEPTION UNCOVERED: Rejection is not the exception but the rule AGENDA UNCOVERED: What must be said, not what others want to hear UNCOVERED MESSENGERS: The least qualified are the first sent DEFINITIONS UNCOVERED: Blessings are cursed; curses are blessed REACTIONS UNCOVERED: Love your enemies; overcome evil with good GLORY UNCOVERED: When it is most hidden, it is most on display Our Theme for Today—UNCOVERED MESSENGERS: The least qualified are the first sent It does not surprise us that from the beginning of his ministry Jesus demonstrated his commitment to proclaiming good news of the kingdom of God, regardless of whether people rejected his message or embraced it. That was Christ's agenda, and he was committed to it. What is surprising is that, also from the beginning, Jesus demonstrated his plan to carry out his proclamation by sending others to speak on his behalf. More surprising is whom he sends, not angels, but mere human beings. In many cases, it was individuals who seemed to lack the qualifications to speak on Christ's behalf. Yet, Christ equipped and prepared them. Do you feel unqualified to tell others the good news? Then be assured, Jesus plans to use you exactly for that purpose.

ORDER OF WORSHIP WELCOME OPENING HYMN

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty Christian Worship 483

Please stand

The order of service we are following today comes from Setting 3, which can be found on page 188 in the hymnal.

INVOCATION Minister: In the name of the Father and of the ( ) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen. CONFESSION M: C:

Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed are they whose sin the Lord does not count against them.

M: C:

Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Almighty and merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed what we have devised and desired in our hearts. We have offended you and sinned against your holy law. We have done those things that we should not have done, and we have not done those things that we should have done. Have mercy on us, Lord! Spare us, forgive us, and restore us, according to your promises in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 32:1-2

Silence for meditation and reflection M:

C:

God, our merciful Father, has forgiven all our sins. He sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Redeemer and Savior. Jesus paid the penalty for our guilt by his death on the cross and freed us from death by his resurrection from the grave. We have peace with God now and forever. Amen.

LORD, HAVE MERCY M: C:

In peace let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

M: C:

For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

Kyrie

“Kyrie” is the Greek word for “Lord.” The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

2

M: C: M:

Please join in singing this song this morning. Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. The “Gloria in Excelsis,” Latin for “Glory to God in the Highest,” has been a Christian song of worship since the 4th century. It echoes the words the angels proclaimed to the shepherds in Luke 2:14.

3

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

C:

For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

M: C:

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST

THE WORD PRAYER OF THE DAY M: C:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

M:

Let us pray.

C:

Gracious Lord, you call and appoint us to proclaim the good news of your Son despite our sins and weaknesses. Purify us by your grace, remove our uncertainties, and work through us to fill the nets of your kingdom with those lost in the darkness of death; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Isaiah admitted he was unclean, guilty of every type of sin. In his grace, the Lord not only takes Isaiah’s sin away but also sends Isaiah out as a messenger of grace.

FIRST READING

Isaiah 6:1-8

1

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two they covered their faces. With two they covered their feet. With two they flew. 3One called to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the L of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory! 4

The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of the one who called, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5

Then I said, “I am doomed! I am ruined, because I am a man with unclean lips, and I dwell among a people with unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the L of Armies!” 6

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7He touched my mouth with the coal and said, “Look, this has touched your lips, so your guilt is taken away, and your sin is forgiven.” 8

Then I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” And I said, “Here I am. Send me!” M: C: 5

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HYMN

How Shall They Hear, Who Have Not Heard Christian Worship 907

SECOND READING

Romans 10:12-17

12

So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13Yes, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14

So then, how can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one about whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without a preacher? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news of peace, who preach the gospel of good things!”

God’s plan is to send saved sinners to proclaim salvation to other sinners. God has no backup plan.

16

But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who believed our message?” 17So then, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message comes through the word of Christ. M: C:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Psalm 71:15

The vocalist will sing the following: Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia! My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long.

The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.

Jesus takes simple, self-admittedly sinful fishermen. He removes their fears, calls them to follow, and makes them fishers of men.

GOSPEL

Luke 5:1-11

1

One time, while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2He saw two boats there along the lakeshore. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3Jesus got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the shore. He sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch.” 5

Simon answered him, “Master, we worked hard all through the night and caught nothing. But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were about to tear apart. 7They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, because I am a sinful man, Lord.” 9For Peter and all those with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Have no fear. From now on you will be catching people.” 11

After they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. M: C:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder in your row and pass it along. Thank you!

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

7

LORD’S PRAYER C:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY

SERMON

CONFESSION OF FAITH

C:

Hark, the Voice of Jesus Crying Christian Worship 745

Children ages 1-8 are excused to Children’s Church. Parents, please pick up your children following the worship service.

Isaiah 6:1-8 Uncovered: Why would God use us?

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

The Nicene Creed was first developed in 325 at the First Council of Nicea. It was written to reaffirm the Biblical teaching of the divinity of Jesus, God’s Son. Like the Apostles’ and Athanasian Creeds, the Nicene Creed is a confession of what the Bible teaches.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Loving God and Lord, you created the universe that surrounds us and the globe on which we live. You control all things through your Son, who sits at your right hand in glory. C: Comfort us with the promise of your eternal presence. M: Give your Word power as it works in our hearts and minds. Clear away our confusion, and demolish our doubts. Send your Spirit to strengthen both our confidence in your promises and our desire to live according to your will. C: Take away our love of sinning, and restore us each day by your grace.

8

M: The signs of the times warn us that the end of time is near. Protect us from scoffers who sneer at your truth. Spare us and Christians around the world from all forms of hate and persecution. C: Give us courage to carry the cross with patience and joy. M: Instill in the hearts of our children a desire to follow you as they prepare for future days. Help them distinguish between what is passing and what is eternal, between instant thrills and lasting joy. Encourage more young people to prepare for service in the public ministry of the gospel. C: Mold us and move us to be good examples for our youth. M:

C:

Hold in your care, Lord, those who are experiencing physical or emotional pain and all who are afflicted by disease or facing death. (Especially bless…) Pour out your compassion on the grieving, and comfort the mourners who miss someone they loved. Move us to pray for these brothers and sisters and to help when we can.

M:

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.

Silent prayer M:

C:

Whether we pray together or alone, you have promised to hear and answer us. Give us patience to accept your blessings in whatever way you send them. In your love and wisdom, prepare us for the day when you will take us to be with you forever. Hear us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

9

M: C:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

M: C:

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

M: C:

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

M:

It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

Sanctus Christian Worship 200

We will sing through this song twice this morning. The first time, the vocalist will sing it alone. Please join in singing it with him the second time.

This ancient worship song is based on songs of praise recorded in Isaiah 6 and Psalm 118.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

M:

C:

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the pastor both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for this special use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.

As we remember Jesus’ death and resurrection, we thank you that you have gathered us together to receive your Son’s body and blood. Send us your Spirit, unite us as one, and strengthen our faith so that we may praise you in your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, we glorify and honor you, O God our Father, with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M:

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my ( ) body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my ( ) blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

C:

11

We give thanks to you, O God, through your dear Son, Jesus Christ, whom you sent to be our Savior, our Redeemer, and the messenger of your grace. Through him you made all things; in him you are well pleased. He is the incarnate Word, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. To fulfill your promises, he stretched out his hands on the cross and released from eternal death all who believe in you.

The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen.

PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION (For private meditation) Lord, I am not worthy to be a guest at your holy table. But you are the friend of sinners, and you will not cast me out. This bread is your body, which bore my sins upon the tree. This wine is your blood, which purifies me from all guilt. At your invitation, I come rejoicing. Receive me, my Savior. Amen.

To aid in your personal preparation for Holy Communion, a list of Christian Questions can be found on pages 295296 in the hymnal.

DISTRIBUTION

The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are confirmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us. If you are not a WELS member but have an interest in receiving Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor after church today or at another time. We are aware that there are a number of other teachings about Holy Communion, and we want it to be a blessing for you, so we would look forward to sharing with you what God says about this Sacrament.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION (For private meditation) Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for nourishing me in this sacrament with your body and blood. You have given me forgiveness, life, and salvation. Let me always remain in you as a branch remains in the vine. Send me out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

TODAY Children’s Church

Children ages 1-8 will be dismissed from our worship service today following the Lord’s Prayer to attend Children’s Church. Parents, following worship, please pick your child up from the gymnasium in the CLC building.

Friendship Register

We would like to have a record of both members and guests who are worshiping with us. Please sign the red Friendship Register book located along the center isle in the hymnal rack.

Fellowship

Please join us in the entryway for drinks and snacks following our worship service. If you would like to host this fellowship on a future Sunday, please sign the sheet in the entryway.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

We have begun a new Bible Study on the Book of Judges. A theme throughout the book of Judges is: “Everyone did evil in the eyes of the Lord.” While this book is about the time of the judges, which was almost 4000 years ago, we can see many comparisons to our time. Today many people still “do evil in the eyes of the Lord.” We will learn about the hope and deliverance God offered to his people through the judges then and in his word now. Plan to join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in the CLC gymnasium.

TCM Bible Study: Jesus, Who Restores the Law’s Intent

The intent of the law or the letter of the law, which one should you follow? We ask that question because there is often a disconnect between the two. That question becomes all the more important when we ask it of God’s law. Join us for TCM Bible Study tonight at 7:00 PM in the Student Center located in the basement at GraceTucson. We will listen to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount where he restores the law’s intent and so teaches Christians today about the intent and letter of God’s law. Refreshments and games will also be available.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Monday Evening Services

Our 6:00 PM Monday evening worship services here at Grace-Sahuarita are scheduled to continue through the spring. This service provides another alternative for those who may not be able to worship on Sunday. Members who regularly worship at any Grace sites are welcome to make use of this weeknight service.

Wednesday Bible Study

We are currently studying the Book of Philippians. The congregation in Philippi struggled with selfcenteredness. Paul explains his situation in prison as an example of sacrifice. He then encourages the believers to act out of love for one another and in the hope that Christ gives them. This book has many applications to a modern Christian’s life. Please join us on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 AM in the church entryway!

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday

It might surprise some to know how highly God speaks of women in the Bible and how much he prizes them. The secular world certainly does not characterize Christianity and the Bible that way. Perhaps you have not always felt that women are precious to God or have been uncertain about the God-given roles for men and women. All ladies are invited to join Pastor Koehler for a comprehensive look at the many things God has to say about the importance and value of women and get to know some of the Bible’s notable women. This class, The Precious Position of a Woman of God, will meet at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall weekly, beginning THIS Thursday, February 10.

TCM Funtivity—“Minute to Win It”: February 11

Have you ever dreamed of being on a game show? The roaring audience, flashing lights, and the big cash prize…that can all be yours at TCM’s own “Minute to Win It” Funtivity! Come by the Student Center (located in the basement at Grace-Tucson) on Friday, February 11 at 7:00 PM for a night full of “Minute to Win It” games. Test your skills, and if you’re lucky, you may even walk away with an amazing prize! Contact Campus Pastor Tim (welstcm@welstcm.com) with any questions. Remember, you’ve only got one minute to win it!

ANNOUNCEMENTS Ladies’ Valentine’s Tea: February 19

Ladies from all Grace sites are invited to join together for fun and fellowship at the Women of Grace Valentine’s Tea on Saturday, February 19 at 11:30 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall! Ladies from our sister WELS congregations are invited as well. Help is needed in a variety of areas: table hosting, kitchen help, and providing brunch/lunch type food and dessert. To volunteer to help in these areas, please contact Adrienne Snavely at golong31@hotmail.com or (520)302-7840. Plan now to join us for this popular and fun event!

Arizona Lutheran Academy Gala: March 26

Our area Lutheran high school, Arizona Lutheran Academy (ALA), is hosting its 11th annual Gala on Saturday, March 26. The goal is to support ALA students by raising funds for campus improvements. The evening will include outdoor dining, entertainment, and a silent and live auction Please consider how you might support ALA’s students by contributing to Arizona Lutheran Academy’s 2022 Gala and auction. Your donation of a service or hand-crafted item would be welcome! Do you own a timeshare? Are you a season ticket holder? Join with friends in your Bible study to purchase gift cards to popular tourist spots near you! Your gift of any new item will support the students at Arizona Lutheran Academy. Would you prefer to give a cash gift directly to campus improvements? Your gift will support ALA students. Visit ALAcoyotes.org/gala to donate or learn more.

ACSTO Donations for Grace Members

Thank you to the many members who make use of the Arizona Tuition Tax Credit to support our students at Redeemer Lutheran School and Arizona Lutheran Academy! It has been especially helpful to have donations recommended for a specific student at one of these schools. The Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO) has made it even easier to help our member students specifically. While recommendations cannot be guaranteed (by law), you can recommend that your donation be used to support “Grace Lutheran Southern AZ” members. ACSTO will use that recommendation in the process of directing funds, and will have the full list of Grace members attending schools where they are eligible to receive the awards. You can even find this option in the drop-down menu of the online donation form at the ACSTO website, www.ACSTO.org. Remember that this option is available to those who have state tax liability in Arizona and allows them to receive a tax credit up to the full amount of their donation. Grace member Jeff Weinstein (520-909-7649, JeffWeinstein@ACSTO.org) is also an employee of ACSTO. He is able to help answer questions you may have.

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a group of nearly 400,000 men, women, and children in nearly 1,300 congregations across the United States and Canada united by a common faith in Christ's saving love. We are committed to a common calling—encouraging each other in our faith and sharing God's gift of a Savior with the rest of the world.
