We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The worship service is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship hymnal. If you would like to worship from a hymnal today, you will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each row; however, you do not need to use a hymnal if you so choose, as everything needed for worship is printed in this worship folder. Personal prayers for worship are now available on printed labels located in the inside cover of each hymnal. These include prayers for before and after worship. OUR WORSHIP SERIES—GODLY GIVING In the Early Christian Church, the believers at Jerusalem were struggling financially. The church at Corinth was blessed by God with material wealth. Moved by God’s grace to them, the Corinthian believers had the opportunity to act in love and with repentance. They would collect an offering for the Jerusalem Christians. The Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul offered these believers encouragement and guidance regarding their collection and their offerings. The Spirit-inspired words of 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9 still offer guidance for our Christian lives and the Godly Giving of faithful believers. This three-week series helps us see God’s precious gifts to us and helps guide our joyful response. Our series is following this path: Contagious Generosity Coordinated Generosity Confident Generosity THEME FOR TODAY—COORDINATED GENEROSITY For a sports team to play its best requires coordination. Coaches and captains work to help everyone aim toward the same goal, but the results depend on each player doing their own part. The offering from the Corinthian Christians in support of the Jerusalem Church was going to be the best example of Christian love when it was prepared and coordinated. The goal was clear, and the result would flow from each member giving according to God’s direction. Paul’s Spirit-filled encouragement and advice offer us direction for our godly giving.

+ THE WORD + God gave the Israelites specific instructions regarding how they were to offer him the firstfruits of their crops. Their words and actions would reflect their joy over what God had given them.

FIRST READING

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

When you enter the land that the L your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and settle in it, 2 take some of the ﬁrst ripe produce that you harvest from the soil of the land that the L your God is giving you. Put it in a basket, and go to the place where the L your God will choose to establish his name. 3 Go to the priest who is presiding at that time and say to him, “Today I declare before the L your God that I have come to the land that the L swore to our fathers to give to us.” 4 The priest will take the basket from your hand and set it down in front of the altar of the L your God. 5

Then you will respond and say in the presence of the L your God, “My father was a wandering Aramean. He went down to Egypt and lived there as an alien with just a few people, but there he became a great, strong, and populous nation. 6 The Egyptians mistreated and afflicted us. Luke 12:13-21

Someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But Jesus said to him, “Man, who appointed me to be a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15

Then he said to them, “Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because a man’s life is not measured by how many possessions he has.”

The rich man in Jesus’ parable made his own plans and preparations, but he was not rich toward God.

He told them a parable: “The land of a certain rich man produced very well. 17 He was thinking to himself, ‘What will I do, because I do not have anywhere to store my crops?’ 18 He said, ‘This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and goods. 19 And I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry.”’ 20

“But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your soul will be demanded from you. Now who will get what you have prepared?’ 21

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

During the singing of this hymn, children ages 1-8 are excused to attend Children’s Church in the CLC Building. Parents can pick-up their children there following the service.

SERMON

2 Corinthians 9:1-7 Coordinated Generosity

It is really not necessary for me to write to you about the service to the saints, 2 because I know your eagerness. I am boasting about it on your behalf to the Macedonians, saying that Achaia has been ready since last year. Your zeal has stirred up many of them. 3 But I am sending the brothers so that our boasting on your behalf will not prove to be empty in this case, but that you will be prepared just as I have been saying. 4 Otherwise, if any Macedonians come along with me and find you unprepared, we (to say nothing of you) would be ashamed of this confidence. 5 That is why I considered it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance, and to arrange ahead of time the expression of praise that you previously promised, so that it may be ready as an expression of praise, not of grudging selfishness. 6

This is what I mean: The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. The one who sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each one should give as he has determined in his heart, not reluctantly or under pressure, for God loves a cheerful giver.

The Te Deum is an ancient canticle of the Christian Church, a confession of faith, a mighty hymn of praise to God. Luther loved the Te Deum and referred to it as a ﬁne symbol or creed.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Lord God, from whom all blessings ﬂow, we praise you for everything you provide to sustain our lives. Lead us every day to be thankful for your gifts and content with what you have given. Today we pray that you would guide us to manage your blessings wisely for the good of your kingdom.

Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a ﬁtting place.

As we use your gifts to meet our needs, move us also to support the ministry of the gospel with our oﬀerings.

Before your Son ascended to your throne, he called us to preach the good news to every creature. In grace you created the public ministry so that we may answer his call by sending others in our place. Impress on us the immense importance of the task you have given us to proclaim your Word to the world. In our words and in our oﬀerings, move us to be faithful witnesses of your grace.

Work in our hearts so that our gifts do more than support a cause or meet a need. Move us to give out of love for you, our King and Redeemer. Lead us to bring our gifts ﬁrst to honor you, the Giver of all things.

Teach us to give as an ongoing part of life since the work of the gospel continues every day. Forgive us for the sins of apathy and carelessness and for giving that reacts only to urgent pleas or crises. Help us see the wisdom of planning our oﬀerings as a regular routine of our faith.

Teach us determine our oﬀerings in view of your blessings to us. The widow’s coins were meager, but they were all she had. Move us to believe that to whom much is given, much is also expected. Give us courage to bring gifts that reﬂect your gifts to us.

Teach us to give our oﬀerings as a cheerful response of our faith in you and your Son. Spare us all feelings of obligation or resentment as we give. Help us to see our oﬀerings as the vehicle that carries the gospel to the lost, and lead us to rejoice with the angels of heaven over every sinner who repents. Help us to balance our duty to give with the joy of giving. 10

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.

Precious Lord, all our blessings come from you. Lead us again and again to thank you and then move us to be wise and faithful stewards of your gifts. May our gifts and oﬀerings bring souls here and far away to the gracious gift of Jesus and his love. Lord, hear us and grant us this blessing. Amen.

“Indeed, how can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have before God on account of you?” (1 Thessalonians 3:9). Your pastors echo the Apostle Paul’s words to God’s people in Thessalonica. It is a joy for us to serve you and to serve alongside all of you! We are thankful for your prayers, kind words, and support throughout the year, so it was humbling to also receive your gifts to us for Pastor Appreciation Month in October. You bring us great joy, and we cannot thank God enough for you!

3rd Quarter Report

A Quarterly Report for the third quarter of 2023 has been prepared by the Ministry Board members, pastors, and other leaders at Grace. This report is designed to keep everyone informed about the ministries and activities that we carry out together. This report was included in a recent Email Update, and printed reports are available on the Welcome Desk in the church entryway.

Lifeliners’ Fundraiser

The Lifeliners, Grace’s high school youth group, helps teenagers mature into Christian young adults through Bible studies, outings, events, and rallies. You can support their Christian education through their Calendar and Tote Bag Fundraiser. Calendars and tote bags can be found on the Welcome Desk in the church entryway. 2024 Bible Verse Wall Calendars are $10 for one, $15 for two. NEW this year are reusable, Grace-logo tote bags for $5 each. All proceeds will support Grace's Lifeliners. This fundraiser was supported by Thrivent Action Teams. 14

If you don’t understand the differences between churches, this study walks through what various church bodies officially teach about the Bible, Jesus, salvation, the sacraments, and morality. Church History Bible Study: Wednesday at Grace-Tucson

The Wednesday Church History class is studying Lutheranism in America. We have one Wednesday left of this study in 2023 before it gives way to Thanksgiving and Advent services. We study together in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best!

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday at Grace-Tucson

“How do I know I’m a Christian?” “The heavenly minded are of no earthly good.” “Christians have to look more saved if I am to believe in their Savior.” We hear these kinds of things and may even wonder about them ourselves. These and more are addressed in Pastor Mark Paustian’s book, “Prepared to Answer.” Each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. Invite a friend and join Pastor Koehler for this study which is helpful for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. This class meets on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

Grown Ups in the Garden: Friday

All Grace members are invited to come and enjoy the beautiful new Art & Nature Garden here at our Grace-Sahuarita location! Have some coffee and treats while visiting with other Grace members and Child Learning Center parents this Friday, November 17, from 7:00 to 9:00 AM.

You’re Invited! Game Night Hosted by TCM: Friday

WELS Tucson Campus Ministry (TCM) invites the friends and members of Grace to a joint game night! Have fun playing party games like Telestrations, 5 Second Rule, and Taboo. Enjoy Thanksgiving treats! Lifeliners Funtasticks Outing: November 19

Pew-pew! Zoom-zoom! Fore! Grace's high school youth group, the Lifeliners, is going to Funtasticks to enjoy laser tag, go-karts, mini golf, and more after church at Grace-Tucson next Sunday, November 19. Midweek Advent Services

Advent is a time of preparation and repentance as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. Join us on three Wednesdays, November 29, and December 6 & 13 for special Advent Midweek worship services. We will use the theme “Exiles” and will examine what it means to be far from home, and even more so, far from God. This series will help us ponder why we needed a way to be brought back together with our Creator and why it is so essential for the Messiah to bring us back from exile. Three weekly themes will rotate through the sites hosting our midweek services, so you are encouraged to pick one site at which to worship for these services. CLC Art & Nature Garden Grand Opening: December 1

Our Child Learning Center at Grace-Sahuarita is hosting a Grand Opening and ribbon cutting for our new Art & Nature Garden at 9:00 AM on Friday, December 1. All members of Grace and CLC families are invited to attend. We will also be inviting the businesses that worked with us along with the mayor of Sahuarita and the newspapers. ANNOUNCEMENTS Sahuarita Winterfest Light Parade: December 2

Our Child Learning Center here at Grace-Sahuarita is participating in the Sahuarita Winterfest Light Parade on Saturday, December 2. Our float will leave the center at 4:00 PM and the parade begins promptly at 5:30 PM. Singers are invited to join us as we share the message of Jesus from our float through song. We hope you can come out to watch the parade and then enjoy the Town of Sahuarita’s Winterfest! There will be a tree lighting, local vendors for shopping, food trucks, live ice sculpting demos, and entertainment.

Ladies’ Fellowship Group: December 7

The Ladies’ Fellowship Group will meet at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 7, in the GraceTucson Fellowship Hall for an Advent salad luncheon. You are asked to bring your favorite salad and a tasteful white elephant gift for a gift exchange. Dessert will be provided. Ladies will also join in an Advent devotion.
