Welcome to Grace! Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service. Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org WORSHIP NOTES We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.

OUR WORSHIP SERIES—GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD It is easy to think of thanksgiving as something we do when life is going well. We give thanks when we receive a gift, when a prayer is answered, or when something turns out the way we hoped. Gratitude seems like a natural response to blessings we can see and enjoy. And yet, the Bible teaches us that thanksgiving is much more than a response to circumstances. It is a response to God. The truth is that everything we have comes from him. Our lives, our abilities, our possessions, our relationships, and every blessing we enjoy are gifts from a gracious God. Most importantly, God has given us the greatest gift of all: his Son, Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ perfect life, innocent death, and glorious resurrection, God has given us forgiveness and the sure promise of eternal life. Because of that grace, thanksgiving changes the way we live. We don’t simply give thanks with our words. We give thanks in the way we use our time, our abilities, and our possessions. We give thanks when we pray, bringing our needs and praises before the God who promises to hear us. We give thanks with our gifts, recognizing that everything we have came from him. And we give thanks through service, using the blessings God has given us to love and serve others. Biblical stewardship is not about paying God back for what he has done. We could never do that. Instead, stewardship is our grateful response to a God who has already given us everything we truly need. His grace changes our hearts, and grateful hearts naturally want to give. In this series, our worship is following this path: October 4 October 11 October 18 1

INVOCATION Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.

The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:8-9

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16

Silence for meditation and reflection

Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23

Mark 10:47

LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie)

Christian Worship 190

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

Minister: In peace let us pray to the Lord.

The minister sings the italicized words. The congregation responds by singing “Lord, have mercy” and with the final “Amen. Amen.”

For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

Congregation:

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST ALL:

Gloria

Luke 2:14

Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

Vocalist: Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. ALL:

+ THE WORD + PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O merciful Creator, your hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of every living creature. Make us always thankful for your loving providence, and grant that we, remembering the richness of your grace, may be faithful stewards of all your good gifts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The L this:

Leviticus 23:9-14 told Moses 10to speak to the people of Israel and tell them

When you enter the land that I am giving to you and you reap its harvest, and when you bring the first sheaf of your harvest to the priest 11 so that he may wave the sheaf before the L so that you will be accepted, the priest shall wave it on the day after the Sabbath. 12On the day that you wave the sheaf, you shall offer as a burnt offering to the L a lamb without blemish, one year old. 13The grain offering accompanying it is to be four quarts of fine wheat flour mixed with oil, a gift to the L , a pleasing aroma. The drink offering accompanying it shall be a quart of wine. 14You shall not eat any of this year’s bread or

roasted grain or fresh ears until this very day, until you have brought the offering of your God. This is a permanent regulation throughout your generations in all the places you live. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Paul gives practical advice to the Philippians about generous offerings which are part of their worship life.

SECOND READING

Philippians 4:10-20

10

I rejoice greatly in the Lord now that you have revived your concern for me once again. Actually, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11I am not saying this because I lack anything; in fact, I have learned to be content in any circumstances in which I find myself. 12I know what it is to live in humble circumstances, and I know what it is to have more than enough. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, while being full or hungry, while having plenty or not enough. 13I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. 14Nevertheless, you did well by becoming partners with me in my affliction. 15

You Philippians know that in the beginning of your experience with the gospel, when I left Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you alone. 16Even while I was in Thessalonica, you sent help more than once for my needs. 17Not that I am seeking a gift, but I am seeking the fruit that adds to your account. 18 I have been paid in full, and I have more than enough. I am fully supplied since I’ve received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable sacrifice, wellpleasing to God. 19And my God will fully supply your every need, according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 20Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever! Amen.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We stand out of respect for the words of Christ, our King.

The “Widow’s Mite” teaches us that giving offerings isn’t about the quantity of the gift but about the quality of the heart.

GOSPEL 41

Jesus sat down opposite the offering box and was watching how the crowd put money into it. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42One poor widow came and put in two small bronze coins, worth less than a penny. 43He called his disciples together and said to them, “Amen I tell you: This poor widow put more into the offering box than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all that she had to live on.” The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise be to you, O Christ. 7

CONFESSION OF FAITH I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Lord God, from whom all blessings flow, we praise you for everything you provide to sustain our lives. Lead us every day to be thankful for your gifts and content with what you have given. Today we pray that you would guide us to manage your blessings wisely for the good of your kingdom. As we use your gifts to meet our needs, move us also to support the ministry of the gospel with our offerings. Before your Son ascended to your throne, he called us to preach the good news to every creature. In grace you created the public ministry so that we may answer his call by sending others in our place. Impress on us the immense importance of the task you have given us to proclaim your Word to the world. In our words and in our offerings, move us to be faithful witnesses of your grace. Work in our hearts so that our gifts do more than support a cause or meet a need. Move us to give out of love for you, our King and Redeemer. Lead us to bring our gifts first to honor you, the Giver of all things. Teach us to give as an ongoing part of life since the work of the gospel continues every day. Forgive us for the sins of apathy and carelessness and for giving that reacts only to urgent pleas or crises. Help us see the wisdom of planning our offerings as a regular routine of our faith. Teach us to determine our offerings in view of your blessings to us. The widow’s coins were meager, but they were all she had. Move us to believe that to whom much is given, much is also expected. Give us courage to bring gifts that reflect your gifts to us. Teach us to give our offerings as a cheerful response of our faith in you and your Son. Spare us all feelings of obligation or resentment as we give. Help us to see our offerings as the vehicle that carries the gospel to the lost, and lead us to rejoice with the angels of heaven over every sinner who repents. Help us to balance our duty to give with the joy of giving. Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence. Silent prayer

9

Precious Lord, all our blessings come from you. Lead us again and again to thank you and then move us to be wise and faithful stewards of your gifts. May our gifts and offerings bring souls here and far away to the gracious gift of Jesus and his love. Lord, hear us and grant us this blessing. Amen.

OFFERTORY:

OFFERING Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:

CLOSING PRAYER Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart that, being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

10

The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27

BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. Amen.

While primarily in English, our service will also include some Spanish.

Divine Call Received

Pastor Scheuerlein was informed on September 19 that Immanuel Lutheran Church in Springerville and Taylor, Arizona voted to extend to him a Divine Call to serve as their pastor. This means that he now holds two calls, one to Grace in Southern Arizona and one to Springerville and Taylor. He is working to make a decision whether to accept the new Call and move his ministry to Immanuel or to decline the Call and continue serving here. He will strive to make that decision with prayer and careful consideration where his particular gifts for ministry fit best.

Pastor Scheuerlein welcomes any input that the friends and members of Grace might wish to share with him. You can reach him by email at RevSAS@GraceLutheranSAZ.org or (262)339-4995. He also appreciates prayers offered on behalf of him and his family during this deliberation as well as for both congregations.

Member Feedback Meeting Follow Up

Thank you to all who attended our Member Feedback Meetings at all four of our sites in recent weeks. We shared challenging projections regarding our next Ministry Spending Plan and the work that we do together. Our Ministry Board members have received feedback from the meetings and from additional comments and appreciate receiving any further feedback or ideas as they work on recommendations for the December Voters’ Meeting. Please share your thoughts with a pastor, site elder, or another member of the Ministry Board. 17
