The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.

OUR WORSHIP SERIES—UNEXPECTED TRUTHS The opening lines of the United States Declaration of Independence boldly assert that certain truths are “self-evident”—truths accessible to human reason and widely recognized by observation of the world. Among these are that all people are created equal and possess unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The founders appealed to principles they believed reasonable people could recognize simply by reflecting on human nature and justice. These truths were meant to be obvious, clear to the mind, and persuasive in the public square. Lutherans, however, note that the most important truths revealed in the Bible are not self-evident at all. In fact, they frequently appear surprising or even contrary to human expectations. Scripture teaches that humanity is not naturally good but deeply sinful. It declares that salvation cannot be achieved through human effort but comes entirely by God’s grace. Most unexpected of all is the message that God brings forgiveness and eternal life through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Biblical truth is revealed by God rather than discovered by reason alone. While some truths may seem obvious to human judgment, the truths of the Bible are often unexpected. In this series, our worship is following this path:

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

Luke 2:14 Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

When God saw their actions, that they had turned from their evil way, God relented from the disaster which he said he would bring on them, and he did not carry it out.

Jonah is perplexed by the amazing grace of God.

But to Jonah all this seemed very bad, and he became very angry. 2He prayed to the L , “L , wasn’t this exactly what I said when I was still in my own country? That is why I previously ﬂed to Tarshish, because I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abounding in mercy, and you relent from sending disaster. 3So now, L , please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4

replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city. He made a shelter for himself there and sat in the shade under it, waiting to see what would happen in the city. 6

Then the L God provided a plant and made it grow up over Jonah to provide shade over his head, to relieve him from his discomfort. So Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, and it attacked the plant so that it withered. 8When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, so he said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 9

But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”

Jonah said, “I do have a right to be angry—angry enough to die!”

Romans 9:6–16

This does not mean that God’s word has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are really Israel, 7and not all who are descended from Abraham are really his children. On the contrary, “Your line of descent will be traced through Isaac.” 8This means that it is not the children of the ﬂesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are counted as his descendants. 9For this is what the promise said: “I will arrive at this set time, and Sarah will have a son.” 10

Not only that, but Rebekah also had children by one man, our forefather, Isaac. 11Even before the twins were born or did anything good or bad, in order that God’s purpose in election might continue— 12not by works but because of him who calls us—it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” 13Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” 14

What will we say then? Does this mean that God is unjust? Absolutely not! 15For God says to Moses: I will show mercy to whom I show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

The Nicene Creed was ﬁrst developed in 325 at the First Council of Nicea. It was written to reaﬃrm the Biblical teaching of the divinity of Jesus, God’s Son. Like the Apostles’ and Athanasian Creeds, the Nicene Creed is a confession of what the Bible teaches.

CONFESSION OF FAITH We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Loving God and Lord, you created the universe that surrounds us and the globe on which we live. You control all things through your Son, who sits at your right hand in glory.

Comfort us with the promise of your eternal presence. Give your Word power as it works in our hearts and minds. Clear away our confusion, and demolish our doubts. Send your Spirit to strengthen both our conﬁdence in your promises and our desire to live according to your will. Take away our love of sinning, and restore us each day by your grace. The signs of the times warn us that the end of time is near. Protect us from scoﬀers who sneer at your truth. Spare us and Christians around the world from all forms of hate and persecution. Mold us and move us to be good examples for our youth. Hold in your care, Lord, those who are experiencing physical or emotional pain and all who are aﬄicted by disease or facing death. Pour out your compassion on the grieving, and comfort the mourners who miss someone they loved. Move us to pray for these brothers and sisters and to help when we can. + THE SACRAMENT + The Preface to the Sacrament is one of the oldest parts of the Christian liturgy, dating back to the ﬁrst century. As we prepare to receive Holy Communion, we are united with the Body of Christ, in an unbroken bond with Christians through the millennia.

PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his ﬂock until he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Sanctus

The Prophet Isaiah was given a vision of heaven, where seraphim praised God. In the Sanctus we welcome Jesus with our hosannas and praise.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Blessed are you, Lord God, eternal King and gracious Father. In love you made us the crown of your creation. In mercy you planned our salvation. In grace you sent your Son to redeem us from sin.

We remember and give you thanks that your eternal Son, Jesus Christ, became ﬂesh and made his dwelling among us, that he willingly placed himself under law to redeem those under law, that he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death on a cross, that he has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Bless us as we receive your Son’s body and blood in this Sacrament. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

LORD’S PRAYER

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for this special use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my (+) body, which is given for you. John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” We sing the Agnus Dei conﬁdent that Jesus has borne our sins and freely gives us forgiveness and peace in the Sacrament.

DISTRIBUTION The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are conﬁrmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us. If you are not a WELS member but have an interest in receiving Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor after church today or at another time. We are aware that there are a number of other teachings about Holy Communion, and we want it to be a blessing for you, so we would look forward to sharing with you what God says about this Sacrament.

Gluten-free communion wafers and grape juice are available for those who for health or medical reason require it. Please see page 14 for more information.

TODAY Holy Communion We provide gluten-free communion wafers for those with wheat allergy, gluten-sensitivity, or celiac disease. These wafers are stored and handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. They are “bread” as Scripture requires and are consecrated along with the rest of the bread. For those requiring gluten-free wafers, please take one from the stand located at the front rail as you approach for communion. Simply hold it so that the pastor can see it at the time of distribution. Grape juice is available for those who for health or medical reason require it instead of wine. Please speak with a pastor about providing grape juice for you on future Sundays. Today we are distributing Holy Communion in “tables.” The ushers will direct members forward by the side aisles. Groups of about ten will be guided toward the center aisle and will line up to receive the elements together. After each table communes, the pastor will offer a blessing and dismiss the group to return by the center aisle. To aid in your personal preparation for Holy Communion, a list of Christian Questions can be found on pages 295-296 in the hymnal. These were prepared by Martin Luther for those intending to receive the Sacrament.

Altar Flowers If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. There are many dates available for the rest of the year. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.

Church History Bible Study: Wednesday

In our Wednesday Church History class we are discussing our synod’s history during the presidency of our current Synod President. We meet together at 10:00 AM on Wednesdays and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at whichever time works best for you!

Basketball at the CLC: Wednesday

Do you enjoy playing basketball? Join fellow players every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the gymnasium at our Child Learning Center in Sahuarita. All skill levels are welcome. Join in the fun and bring a friend!

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday

Join Pastor Koehler for a series of classes on 1, 2, and 3 John. These three brief but powerful letters, written by the Apostle John, teach us how to live as a follower of Jesus. Living in light, love, and truth are at the core of John’s letters. Whether you are well-acquainted with Scripture or just getting to know your Bible, this class will increase your understanding and strengthen your love for God and others. Women’s Bible study takes place in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 AM on Thursdays. 15

ANNOUNCEMENTS Handbells & Choir

It’s not too late to join us for Handbells and Worship Choir! We rehearse on Thursday evenings in the sanctuary. Handbells meets from 5:30 to 6:30 PM and Worship Choir follows from 6:45 to 8:00 PM. No experience is needed! Our directors and experienced members are eager to help and teach you what you need to know! Both of these groups welcome members who are 12 years old or older. If you are unsure about participating, please come to a rehearsal and give it a try! There is no commitment to continue. Member Feedback Meeting: 2027 Ministry Spending Plan and Ministry Outlook

All members of Grace are invited to a Member Feedback meeting with Grace President Eric Hanson next Sunday, September 27, here at Grace-Tucson from 9:00 to 9:45 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Eric will share information from our Ministry Board about their work on the 2027 Ministry Spending Plan and our current ministry structure as one congregation at four sites. The Ministry Board is interested in your feedback and ideas and will use the things you share as they continue to work on recommendations for the Voters’ Meeting in December. Member Feedback Meetings took place last Sunday at Grace-Benson and Grace-Vail and this morning at Grace-Sahuarita.

Men of Iron & Fire: September 27

“Iron sharpens iron, and a man sharpens the insight of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Men of Iron & Fire is a group just for men that meets monthly for Bible study and occasionally for a fellowship event. All men of the congregation are invited to attend. On Sunday, September 27, they will meet in the boardroom at Civano at 2:00 PM to continue their Bible study entitled “A Man of Character,” considering what Timothy can teach us about trust, studying the Word, teachability, relationships, and models for faith. Grandparents’ Day at Redeemer

Every year Redeemer Lutheran School in Marana holds a Grandparents' Day. This year it is Wednesday, September 30. The event begins at 12:45 PM with a special chapel service, followed by activities in the classrooms. Many of the students do not have grandparents who are able to attend. If you are interested in serving as an "adoptive grandparent" please contact Sally in Redeemer’s school office at (520) 572-8136.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Spanferkelfest (Pig Roast): October 3

Grace members from all sites are invited to the annual Spanferkelfest Outreach Event being held on Saturday, October 3, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Grace-Tucson. Come and enjoy some delicious roasted pork, side dishes, & desserts! This Friendship Evangelism event is a great opportunity to invite your unchurched friends and/or neighbors for an evening of fun. Invitations for you to use are at both church doors and in the Fellowship Hall.

LWMS Rally: October 10

The next LWMS Fall Rally is a joint retreat hosted by our sisters in the LWMS Grand Canyon West Circuit. It will be held on Saturday, October 10, at Grace Lutheran Church in Glendale, AZ. Our presenters will be Pastor Paul Horn, National Civilian Chaplain to the Military and Jason Jonkers, Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. Registration sheets are available on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall or online at www.gcwlwms.org. If you are interested in carpooling, please contact Ann Strickler at (520)409-1236. The carpool would leave Grace-Sahuarita at 6:00 AM and pick up at Grace-Tucson at 6:30 AM.

Grow in Grace Class

Would you like to learn more about our Savior Jesus, about the Bible that tells us about him, and about what we believe and teach at Grace? Our congregation offers a series of Bible-based lessons called Grow in Grace. Grow in Grace also serves as our membership class for those who may be interested in joining the church. Grace’s Counseling Services

Do you feel discouraged about your life or anxious about something - even if you aren’t sure what it is? Are you mourning the loss of friends or family members who have moved away or left this earth? Are you dealing with chronic pain or illness? Grace has a WELS certified Bible-based therapist on staff, and she would love to help you. She works two days a week in the counseling building at Grace-Tucson. To schedule an appointment with Cinda, it is best to text her at 520-581-4714 or email her at Cinda@GraceLutheranSAZ.org. Because she is on staff at Grace and supported by the congregation’s Ministry Spending Plan, there is no charge for anyone who makes an appointment. Along with a certification in trauma, an area of specialty is in relationships. Cinda also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. 17
