The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.

OUR WORSHIP SERIES—UNEXPECTED TRUTHS The opening lines of the United States Declaration of Independence boldly assert that certain truths are “self-evident”—truths accessible to human reason and widely recognized by observation of the world. Among these are that all people are created equal and possess unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The founders appealed to principles they believed reasonable people could recognize simply by reflecting on human nature and justice. These truths were meant to be obvious, clear to the mind, and persuasive in the public square. Lutherans, however, note that the most important truths revealed in the Bible are not self-evident at all. In fact, they frequently appear surprising or even contrary to human expectations. Scripture teaches that humanity is not naturally good but deeply sinful. It declares that salvation cannot be achieved through human effort but comes entirely by God’s grace. Most unexpected of all is the message that God brings forgiveness and eternal life through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Biblical truth is revealed by God rather than discovered by reason alone. While some truths may seem obvious to human judgment, the truths of the Bible are often unexpected. In this series, our worship is following this path:

The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacriﬁce for the sins of the whole world. Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23

Mark 10:47

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

Luke 2:14 Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and will pay us back in full for all of the evil that we did to him.”

Joseph was quick to forgive his brothers.

They sent the following message to Joseph: “Before he died your father commanded us, 17‘You are to tell Joseph, “Please forgive the oﬀense of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the oﬀense of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18

Then Peter came up and asked Jesus, “Lord, how many times must I forgive my brother when he sins against me? As many as seven times?” 22

Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but I tell you as many as seventyseven times. 23For this reason the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24When he began to settle them, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25 Because the man was not able to pay the debt, his master ordered that he be sold, along with his wife, children, and all that he owned to repay the debt.

The ability to forgive others comes from the Spirit enabling us to understand how much God has forgiven us.

“Then the servant fell down on his knees in front of him, saying, ‘Master, be patient with me, and I will pay you everything!’ 27The master of that servant had pity on him, released him, and forgave him the debt. 28

“But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began choking him, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ 29

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

CONFESSION OF FAITH

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suﬀered under Pontius Pilate, was cruciﬁed, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, you have been called as teachers for the Children’s Sunday School and youth education programs of this congregation. You are doing the work the Lord has committed to his Church: to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ, to make disciples of all nations, and to feed the lambs of the Lord Jesus. You do this work on behalf of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and in association with the parents who entrust their children to your instruction and care. 7

Your work is both a great privilege and a serious responsibility. To equip yourselves for this blessed work, it is necessary that you faithfully study God’s Word, devote yourselves to prayer for those entrusted to your care, and carefully prepare for the lessons you will teach. It is also of great importance in the teaching of the Savior’s little ones that you set an example by leading Christian lives.

Members of Grace, I urge you to regard these teachers as servants of Jesus Christ, teachers of the gospel, and God’s gifts to his Church. Support them in their work, pray for them, and bring your children to Children’s Bible Hour and Youth Bible Studies so that you and your families may receive the eternal blessings the Lord promises to those who hear and learn his Word.

PRAYER Let us pray. Gracious Savior, you bless every eﬀort to bring children up in the Christian faith. We ask you to give wisdom, kindness, and perseverance to teachers who feed your lambs. Teach them your truth so that they may teach others. Cause the children entrusted to their care to be eager to learn about their Savior. May your goodness go out into all the earth so that people in this community and everywhere may hear it and believe it, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Almighty God and Father, we thank you for all your mercies, especially for the gift of your Son, through whom you have revealed your gracious will. We praise you for the Holy Spirit and his working through the means of grace. Plant your Word in our hearts, and cause it to produce fruit in our lives. Strengthen and defend your Church, that by your Word and sacraments faith may grow and love toward all may increase. Support all who spread the light of your truth throughout the world.

Keep our children in the grace of their baptisms. Enable their parents to train them in lives of faith. Raise up Christians to serve you in the ministry of the Word and in all godly walks of life. Preserve our nation in justice and honor. Guide and bless all who make, administer, and judge our laws. Give them wisdom that they may promote justice and hinder evil.

Let your blessing rest on planting and harvest, commerce and industry, medicine and science, the arts and culture. Protect all who travel, and care for those whose work is diﬃcult or dangerous. Be with all who devote themselves to any useful task. Comfort all who are in sorrow or need, sickness or adversity. Remember those who suﬀer persecution for the faith. Have mercy on those for whom death draws near. Grant them your love, and take them into your tender care.

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence. Silent prayer

We remember with thanksgiving those who have loved and served you, who now rest from their labors. Console those who are mourning or living with sadness. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers. The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27

The flowers beautifying our altar this morning were given by Marjorie Lowrance in thankfulness to God for answered prayers. Tonight we’ll see how Daniel and his friends moved from the classroom to high-pressure careers in one of the most powerful governments in the world. We’ll talk about prayer, pressure, success—and a kingdom that outlasts them all as we answer the question, Can You Succeed Without Selling Your Soul?

Church History Bible Study: Wednesday

In our Wednesday Church History class we are discussing our synod’s history during the presidency of our current Synod President. We meet together at 10:00 AM on Wednesdays and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at whichever time works best for you!

Basketball at the CLC: Wednesday

Do you enjoy playing basketball? Join fellow players every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the gymnasium at our Child Learning Center in Sahuarita. All skill levels are welcome. Join in the fun and bring a friend!

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday

Join Pastor Koehler for a series of classes on 1, 2, and 3 John. These three brief but powerful letters, written by the Apostle John, teach us how to live as a follower of Jesus. Living in light, love, and truth are at the core of John’s letters. Whether you are well-acquainted with Scripture or just getting to know your Bible, this class will increase your understanding and strengthen your love for God and others. Women’s Bible study takes place in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 AM on Thursdays.

Handbells & Choir begin Thursday

Have you ever been interested in ringing a handbell? Do you enjoy singing or wish your singing voice was stronger? Please consider joining us on Thursday evenings beginning this week! Handbells will rehearse from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Worship Choir will rehearse from 6:45 to 8:00 PM. Both groups meet in the church sanctuary. No experience is needed! Our directors and experienced members are eager to help and teach you what you need to know! Both of these groups welcome members who are 12-years-old or older. If you are unsure about participating, please come to the first rehearsal and give it a try! There is no commitment to continue. Grace member Dennis Goeglein was called home to heaven on July 19. A memorial service will be held this Saturday, September 19, at Grace-Tucson at 11:00 AM. Lunch will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Please keep Dennis’ wife, Mary, in your prayers.

Dinner at Biergarten!

Have you heard there’s a new German restaurant in Tucson? Grace president, Eric Hanson, has secured a reservation for up to 25 people on Tuesday, September 22, at 6:30 PM at Biergarten German Kitchen & Bar (2320 N. Silverbell Road). Come hang out with your fellow Grace members and enjoy some great food! Please contact Eric at (520) 664-6626 to save your spot. Member Feedback Meeting: 2027 Ministry Spending Plan and Ministry Outlook

All members of Grace are invited to a Member Feedback meeting with Grace President Eric Hanson on Sunday, September 27, here at Grace-Tucson from 9:00 to 9:45 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Eric will share information from our Ministry Board about their work on the 2027 Ministry Spending Plan and our current ministry structure as one congregation at four sites. The Ministry Board is interested in your feedback and ideas and will use the things you share as they continue to work on recommendations for the Voters’ Meeting in December. Member Feedback Meetings are taking place today at Grace-Benson and Grace-Vail and next Sunday at Grace-Sahuarita.

Men of Iron & Fire: September 27

“Iron sharpens iron, and a man sharpens the insight of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Men of Iron & Fire is a group just for men that meets monthly for Bible study and occasionally for a fellowship event. All men of the congregation are invited to attend. On Sunday, September 27, they will meet in the boardroom at Civano at 2:00 PM to continue their Bible study entitled “A Man of Character,” considering what Timothy can teach us about trust, studying the Word, teachability, relationships, and models for faith. Grandparents’ Day at Redeemer

Every year Redeemer Lutheran School in Marana holds a Grandparents' Day. This year it is Wednesday, September 30. The event begins at 12:45 PM with a special chapel service, followed by activities in the classrooms. Many of the students do not have grandparents who are able to attend. If you are interested in serving as an "adoptive grandparent" please contact Sally in Redeemer’s school office at (520) 572-8136. 13
