The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.

OUR WORSHIP SERIES—UNEXPECTED TRUTHS The opening lines of the United States Declaration of Independence boldly assert that certain truths are “self-evident”—truths accessible to human reason and widely recognized by observation of the world. Among these are that all people are created equal and possess unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The founders appealed to principles they believed reasonable people could recognize simply by reflecting on human nature and justice. These truths were meant to be obvious, clear to the mind, and persuasive in the public square. Lutherans, however, note that the most important truths revealed in the Bible are not self-evident at all. In fact, they frequently appear surprising or even contrary to human expectations. Scripture teaches that humanity is not naturally good but deeply sinful. It declares that salvation cannot be achieved through human effort but comes entirely by God’s grace. Most unexpected of all is the message that God brings forgiveness and eternal life through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Biblical truth is revealed by God rather than discovered by reason alone. While some truths may seem obvious to human judgment, the truths of the Bible are often unexpected. In this series, our worship will follow this path:

Blessed are they whose sin the Lord does not count against them. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Almighty and merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23

Mark 10:47

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

Luke 2:14 Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

He made the two groups one by destroying the wall of hostility that divided them 15 when he abolished the law of commandments and regulations in his ﬂesh. He did this to create in himself one new person out of the two, in this way making peace. 16And he did this to reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by putting the hostility to death on it. 17He also came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

In the face of a test from Jesus, a Canaanite woman demonstrates great faith in God’s promise for all people.

Jesus left that place and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. There a Canaanite woman from that territory came and kept crying out, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! A demon is severely tormenting my daughter!” 22

But he did not answer her a word.

His disciples came and pleaded, “Send her away, because she keeps crying out after us.” 24 25

He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

But she came and knelt in front of him, saying, “Lord, help me.”

He answered her, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to their little dogs.” 27

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was cruciﬁed under Pontius Pilate. He suﬀered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

The Nicene Creed was ﬁrst developed in 325 at the First Council of Nicea. It was written to reaﬃrm the Biblical teaching of the divinity of Jesus, God’s Son. Like the Apostles’ and Athanasian Creeds, the Nicene Creed is a confession of what the Bible teaches.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and gloriﬁed, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Father in heaven, you make human beings to be the crown of your creation. We are all your children, but we are all unique. You form us by your power, but in your wisdom you make us diﬀerent from one another. You give us our bodies; you bestow our intelligence; you provide our family and home; you place us in your world according to your wisdom and will.

We thank you, Lord, that you have made us what we are and put us where we live. 8

As we share the bond of humanity, Lord, so we share the curse of sin. We confess that we are not better than our ancestors or contemporaries. Our iniquities are not less than theirs, and their fate is rightly ours. We deserve the common destiny of hell in payment for the sin we inherit and the sins we commit. We implore you, Lord, to put aside your anger and free us from the punishment we deserve. You sent the Son you loved. He came in a body like ours. He ate as we eat, slept as we sleep, wept as we weep, and died as we die. But he did not sin as we sin. You accepted his perfect life and innocent death as the atoning sacriﬁce for our sins and, when he died, you raised him to life as the assurance that you have justiﬁed us forever.

We adore you, Lord! You have forgiven our sins and restored us as your children. We are all members of your human family, O Father, but now, by the power of the gospel and the working of your Spirit, you have made us members of your spiritual family. We who are diﬀerent are now one in Christ. We who come from many nations and many cultures are joined in one fellowship, one communion, one holy Church. We rejoice, O Lord, in the Savior we share, in the culture of the Church, and in the hope of eternal life. Help us face the truth that we do not always rejoice in our unity as we know we should. Too often we are unwilling to walk on the path our brothers and sisters walk. We are impatient with their perspectives, taken up with our own traditions, and insensitive to their dreams and fears. Sometimes unwittingly, but sometimes willingly, we think, speak, and act from bigotry and prejudice. Forgive us, Lord, for our supposed superiority, our insensitivity, and our failure to love all your children. We remember, O Father, all those who dreamed and labored to achieve a better life for all. Empower us that we may dream and labor, too, and that we may do it reﬂecting your love. As servants of Christ, lead us to proclaim the truth that sets all people free from the guilt and control of sin. As citizens of this nation, lead us to live the principle that all people are equal under our nation’s laws. Help us to be lights for the gospel, but also make us lights that expose racism and show the way to compassion and tolerance. Give power to your gospel, Lord, and give freedom to our land. Give wisdom and patience to the medical communities that serve the diseased, the wounded, and the disturbed. Grant treatment and healing according to your will. Pour out your compassion on all the hurting in our society. Move us to help our brothers and sisters in need. 9

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence. Silent prayer

We walk together on one road, eternal Father, the road that leads to life with your Son. Let him walk with us now, we pray. Give us his life to imitate, his love to share, his passion to heal, and his power to succeed. When this life ends, bring us to the place where we will be free at last and sing his praises in the eternal language of heaven. May all the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you!

+ THE SACRAMENT + PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

The Preface to the Sacrament is one of the oldest parts of the Christian liturgy, dating back to the ﬁrst century. As we prepare to receive Holy Communion, we are united with the Body of Christ, in an unbroken bond with Christians through the millennia.

It is right to give him thanks and praise. 10

It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his ﬂock until he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: The Prophet Isaiah was given a vision of heaven, where seraphim praised God. In the Sanctus we welcome Jesus with our hosannas and praise.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Lord God, you are worthy to receive thanks and praise from all people. You created the world and all who live in it, and in your mercy you saved us. We give thanks to you for the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ. Though in very nature God, he took the nature of a servant and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. He oﬀered himself as a sacriﬁce for sin and redeemed us from its curse and penalty. He rescued us from the terrors of death and restored eternal life with you. He conquered our enemies and gained for us the kingdom of grace and glory.

Bless us as we receive your Son’s body and blood, and lead us to remember his suﬀering, death, and resurrection. Forgive our sins and ﬁll us with the hope of new life in heaven. Hear our praise and receive our thanks as we worship you—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my (+) body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my (+) blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

O, LAMB OF GOD

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for this special use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.

Agnus Dei John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” We sing the Agnus Dei conﬁdent that Jesus has borne our sins and freely gives us forgiveness and peace in the Sacrament.

The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are conﬁrmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us.

TODAY Holy Communion We provide gluten-free communion wafers for those with wheat allergy, gluten-sensitivity, or celiac disease. These wafers are stored and handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. They are “bread” as Scripture requires and are consecrated along with the rest of the bread. For those requiring gluten-free wafers, please take one from the stand located at the front rail as you approach for communion. Simply hold it so that the pastor can see it at the time of distribution. Grape juice is available for those who for health or medical reason require it instead of wine. Please speak with a pastor about providing grape juice for you on future Sundays. Today we are distributing Holy Communion in “tables.” The ushers will direct members forward by the side aisles. Groups of about ten will be guided toward the center aisle and will line up to receive the elements together. After each table communes, the pastor will offer a blessing and dismiss the group to return by the center aisle. To aid in your personal preparation for Holy Communion, a list of Christian Questions can be found on pages 295-296 in the hymnal. These were prepared by Martin Luther for those intending to receive the Sacrament.

Altar Flowers

The flowers this morning were given by Sean and Mary Brearcliffe to beautify our worship space. If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. The next available dates are August 23 and all the Sundays in September. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.

Fellowship

We are continuing our look at Romans 9-16 under the theme “The Triumph of Grace.” If you have not made Sunday morning Bible study a part of your routine, this would be a great time to start! We meet at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

Summer Sunday School

Kids—join us on Sunday mornings in August for a BLOCK PARTY! We will learn the joy of building on a firm foundation through an interesting lesson, engaging activities, and a special building challenge each week. We meet from 8:45 to 9:45 every Sunday morning in the education building. We hope you can join us! Friends are welcome too! Today we are looking at Luke 5:17-26 and learning that nothing should come between us and Jesus. 15

Church History Bible Study: Wednesday

In our Wednesday Church History class we continue to consider the Wisconsin Synod’s transition from the Twentieth Century into the Twenty-First. We meet together at 10:00 AM on Wednesdays and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at whichever time works best for you!

Basketball at the CLC: Wednesday

Do you enjoy playing basketball? Join fellow players every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the gymnasium at our Child Learning Center in Sahuarita. All skill levels are welcome. Join in the fun and bring a friend!

NO Women’s Bible Study

The Women’s Bible Study group is on a break, and will resume their study on Thursday, September 3, with a study of 1, 2, and 3 John. We hope you will once again join us in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall at 9:00 AM when that study begins.

Parking Lot Use

If you are around our property this Wednesday, you will see some activity in our parking lot. The OLIV apartment complex will be using our lot for distributing keys for their college student move-in. They will be entering from Euclid and exiting on 2nd Street. You may still enter and park—just let their staff know you are a Grace member.

TCM Kickoff: August 23

College students and non-students who are college-age are invited to a beginning of the school year Kickoff Party. Come to hear about the Sunday night Bible studies and other upcoming events, get signed up for parking in the Grace lot, and get a 24/7 access code to the Student Center—and there will be food! We begin at 6:00 PM next Sunday, August 23, in the Student Center, located in the lower level of the church at Grace-Tucson. The stairs below the TCM sign on the parking lot side of the church will take you there. Men of Iron & Fire: August 30

“Iron sharpens iron, and a man sharpens the insight of his friend.” (Proverbs 27:17). Men of Iron & Fire is a group just for men that meets monthly for Bible study and occasionally for a fellowship event. All men of the congregation are invited to attend. On Sunday, August 30, they will meet in the boardroom at Civano at 2:00 PM to continue their Bible study entitled “A Man of Character,” considering what Timothy can teach us about trust, studying the Word, teachability, relationships, and models for faith. Movie Night in the Courtyard

Get ready for a “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” kind of movie night on Saturday, September 19. It will be a baseball-themed evening complete with hot dogs, cracker jack, and other stadium type treats. You can even get your picture taken with “Babe Ruth!” A movie that is a favorite of people of all ages, The Sandlot, will be showing on the big screen in the courtyard. Watch for more details, but while you wait, dig out your favorite baseball/softball jersey, and find a picture of you in your playing days for our Hall of Fame display! And of course, think about a friend who might like to join you! 17
