Goviers & Royal Crown Derby: many happy memories
The association between Royal Crown Derby and Goviers stretches back many years, way before my involvement started in 1994. The previous owner of Goviers commissioned a Loving Cup in 1979 to mark the election of Margaret Thatcher as our first female Prime Minister. After that no major occasion was complete without a Goviers exclusive of some kind. Once the paperweight range was established Goviers became the go to place for special editions. Events in Sidmouth often involved mulled wine at Christmas, and there was always a queue to get into the shop from way before the doors opened. Wonderful occasions and a great opportunity to meet collectors from all over the country.
When we bought Goviers in 2019 Royal Crown Derby were already starting to move away from the production of paperweights to concentrate on tableware for high end hotels and restaurants. This move has continued and we now see very few new paperweights being launched. This shift in focus started us looking for unusual pre-loved paperweights, something that has turned into a significant part of our business. We now have a fantastic collection of pieces which we thought that we needed to showcase and so Janet has put together this comprehensive catalogue of our current stock, including lots of new pieces that have just come to us.
Our stock room is however rather full and we do have a lot of duplicates of some pieces so, as it is approaching the Festive Season we thought that we would offer you some attractive prices in red, on these duplicate pieces giving you the opportunity to add them to your collection or to give them as gifts at Christmas.
