Here comes summer….

It is so good to see the sun again, much as the garden was grateful for the rain, I feel so much better for seeing the sun and feeling the warmth. It must be my age! Despite the temperatures rising in our office, work has been going on to bring you are latest catalogue packed full of new products and ranges. Many of our suppliers have reduced the number of launches which makes it difficult to bring you as many new launches each month as we would like. However, this month we have been really excited at the amount of new product from existing suppliers as well as the new ranges we have found.

Being based in Staffordshire we are very proud of the fact that our county is the heart of ceramic making in the UK. This year Stoke on Trent celebrates 100 years since it was granted City status. The city is justifiably proud of its history of skilled manufacturing stretching back hundreds of years, so it is fitting that this milestone is being celebrated with some quality ceramics, all made in Stoke on Trent. We are delighted to be working with Moorland Pottery and showcasing their range for this event. A small factory not a stone’s throw from Nile Street Burslem where the Royal Doulton factory used to be; and where I started my time in the Stoke potteries.

It was heartening to hear this week that Moorcroft, which went out of business in May, has been bought by Will Moorcroft the grandson of the founder William Moorcroft. Will has great plans to resume production, on a slightly smaller scale, and we will do all we can to support the team as they develop new ranges and save the skills that are unique to Moorcroft. Some good news for the Potteries in its special year.

Regular readers of my ramblings will know that Janet and I love France and all things French, including obviously the wine! In April we spent a glorious week in Cornwall with the younger Willis’s and visited the Duchy of Cornwall nursery on a blistering hot day. They served us our refreshing drinks out of the wonderful La Rochere range, made in the French coastal town of La Rochelle. A few weeks before we had chosen this range to add to our selection of glassware. With summer upon us they make ideal glasses for that cheeky rose or prosecco in the garden!

Our daughter-in-law Hannah is fanatical about Puffins and has a tasteful collection of paintings and sculptural pieces around their home. Naturally Harriet has been wearing lots of Puffin adorned clothes, and even went Puffin spotting in Wales this month. It is amazing how many ways an image of a Puffin can be recreated. Janet has gathered some of our favourites for you. I am sure Hannah, and Harriett, will approve!

During my time at Royal Crown Derby, I was lucky enough to work with some amazingly talented designers and design technicians. The skill required to create the patterns, often involving up to 20 colours, and then adapt that to fit a flowing shape is truly incredible. The MD often described it as like having a suit fitted. Mine came off the peg so that analogy was lost on me, and many others! Janet has grouped our pre-loved collection by designer so you can see the different styles that each one brings to their creations.

Important Information - Future catalogues

Over the past 12 months or so we have been doing a new catalogue most months. With the increased cost of postage, paper and the reduction in new ranges we have decided to go back to a smaller number of printed catalogues each year. Many customers have asked to still receive our information by email and not in the post to save cost, and trees. We will still make sure that we keep you updated by email with new launches from your favourite brands but if you do not have access to email please let us know and we will be delighted to send you a paper version of the information. There will be at least three or four full catalogues a year and several brand or product specific catalogues each quarter. The first of these will be a special catalogue devoted to collectable soft toys from brands like Steiff, Merrythought, Deans and Canterbury Bears. If you have purchased anything in these ranges, you will automatically receive one but if you would like to have one, please just let us know. Don’t worry you will still hear from us regularly.

The Doulton Art Director who instigated the first paperweights to be produced at Royal Crown Derby has in his time also designed several pieces himself, many of which are still very popular and loved today.

Brian Branscombe was the art director at Royal Crown Derby who was asked to design the first six paperweights which were introduced in 1981. His wife, June Branscombe, is an expert in heraldry and has designed most of the commemoratives, however her paperweight designs such as the Seahorse and Twin Lambs in the early 1990s have remained iconic to this day.

Discovered in 1834 gem hunters discovered a highly unusual stone. Often described as “emerald by day, ruby by night,” the remarkable alexandrite stone displays one of the most stunning phenomena in the gem universe displaying different colours, depending on whether it was in natural or artificial light.

The world’s most expensive gemstone, earth mined Alexandrite is exceptionally rare. Today lab alexandrite has all of the same colour change, the same chemical make up as the original earth mined gems showing a play of colour from topaz to amethyst with flashes of green, yellow and purple and more. It is quite normal to see colours not previously seen, months after the gemstone was purchased.

All of our alexandrite gems are made to order, cut and polished by hand to bring out the true beauty of the gemstone beyond the main reason for owning it, the colour change. The chemical, chromium is present in alexandrite, this creates the colour change. A truly magical gem.

By the 1950s, alexandrite joined the list of birthstones as the modern alternative to traditional pearl for the month of June.

The Rocking Horse Silver Crown was only issued in 1935 to mark King George V’s Silver Jubilee. The coin is 50% silver and includes an Art Deco version of the St. George and Dragon. The Crown was worth 5 shillings in pre decimal currency measuring an impressive 38.6mm in diameter with a weight of 28.3 grams. This design became iconic in coin collecting circles, the coin is also an important royal collectable, perfect as a 90th birthday gift.

Struck by the Royal Mint at Tower Hill in London, the coin is in excellent condition and is graded as Extra Fine.

Goviers 100 Year Old Sixpence

Ideal wedding gift or to use in this years Christmas pudding!

The nation’s favourite coin, the 100 Year Old Silver Sixpence struck by the Royal Mint in London in 1925. The perfect gift for the bride ‘A sixpence for her shoe’. Also known as a lucky coin, since the Victorian era a sixpence was included in the Christmas pudding and the person who found it was said to be lucky for the next year!

An antique coin, first struck in 1551 with the last circulation sixpence issued in 1967. The sixpence remained legal tender until 1980. No more will ever be struck making this a highly collectable piece of British history. This King George V coin is in excellent condition, graded as extra fine. Packaged in a sixpence size coin wallet, to protect the coin.

These coins were issued to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887, marking 50 years of her reign. All coins are sterling silver. All struck by the Royal Mint at Tower Hill, London. All include the Jubilee Head only issued between 1887-1892.

Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of the Britains Defender of the Faith

In 1887, Britain’s sterling silver coins featured the “Jubilee Head”portrait of Queen Victoria, marking her Golden Jubilee. The “Jubilee Head” was a new portrait of Queen Victoria designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm, featuring her in a more mature depiction.

2025 is the 75th Anniversary of Peanuts, one of the most popular and influential comic strips of all time.

The World War I Flying Ace is one of the many fantasy alternate identities that Snoopy adopted during the fifty-year run of the Peanuts comic strip. Dressed in scarf and goggles, Snoopy imagined that he flew in hot pursuit of the Red Baron.
