Welcome to the Goviers World of Bears!
Who doesn’t have childhood memories of their favourite soft toy, in my case a yellow teddy bear, in my brother’s case a Panda. Both well-worn and very well-travelled now but both still part of our lives. Our own granddaughter, Harriett, is now 13 months old and starting to enjoy the rather large collection of soft toys that she is always surrounded by. Some are new, some with quite a history but all well-loved and cuddled. It isn’t just in childhood that we have a great affection for bears be they soft, or indeed not, as many of you can attest to. We hope that this first catalogue in our new series contains lots of things you would like to add to your collection. We have certainly enjoyed putting it together and looking again at the ranges of bears and others subjects from all our suppliers. I am particularly taken with the range of Saturno bears which we have not featured before.
We have, with our designer Caroline, worked on a new format and style with we hope clearer text and bigger images. We have tried to put together a selection of our favourite new launches along with some classics from our world class range of suppliers. Janet and I were lucky enough to visit small family firm Canterbury Bears last month and selected some new pieces, many of which can be personalised; naturally we ordered one for Harriett! Steiff have come up with some fantastic new pieces, including the new Harry Potter range, and we have managed to secure a small allocation of each of them. Their editions seem to be selling out faster and faster so we would recommend ordering any that you want quickly to secure one.
Merrythought, like Canterbury Bears, are made in the UK by a lovely team located near Ironbridge. The care that goes into the creation of their pieces was evident when we visited their workshops a few years ago. Obviously Janet came away with a little addition to her collection and I met a bear that was almost as big as me!

“Little Drummer Boy”, originally titled ”Carol of the Drum”, is a popular Christmas song written by American composer Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941. First recorded in 1951 by the Austrian Trapp Family, the song was further popularized by so many wonderful renditions including Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr, Boney M and even a duet by the unusual pairing of Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Now it is portrayed as the heartbeat of this hugely favoured Little Drummer Boy musical Teddy bear. When a poor young boy was summoned to visit Jesus, he was worried he had no gift for the infant.
