Rendezvous Near and FarIt’s Summer!
After what has felt like an especially long and chilly spring, summer is finally within sight. Boaters throughout the Club are eagerly awaiting warm weather, calm waters, and the return of great weekends spent with family and friends at GPYC.
June is packed with exciting opportunities to enjoy both our boating traditions and the incredible social experiences that make our Club so special. The first major event of the month is our Annual In-Harbor Rendezvous right here at GPYC on June 13–15. The best part? No travel required! Simply head to the Club for a weekend full of summer fun.
We will kick off the weekend on Friday evening with an Adult Arcade Game Night on the East Lawn. On Saturday, the energy continues with a Cars and Coffee gathering near the Family Recreation Center and tennis court parking area. Throughout the day, members can enjoy a variety of activities including remote-control boat races, pickleball, bocce, and cornhole competitions. One event you will not want to miss is the RC Boat Races at the Marine Activity Center beginning at 2:00 p.m. It promises to be a fantastic weekend that captures everything we love about summertime at the Club.
Later in the month, GPYC will host its first-ever Port Sanilac Rendezvous on June 26–28. If you have never visited Port Sanilac, this is the perfect opportunity to experience one of Michigan’s great harbor towns. While boat slips have already sold out, there are still many nearby VRBO accommodations available, and the town is only about an hour-and-a-half drive away for those wishing to visit for the day.
The weekend festivities begin Friday night with a visit to the famous Alli Bar, featuring live entertainment and a fun atmosphere for all. On Saturday, members will gather at the Burke family’s beautifully renovated Luxury Barn—a truly unique venue designed for unforgettable events and celebrations.
June is shaping up to be an outstanding month at GPYC, filled with boating, family activities, friendships, and summer traditions both near and far. We hope you will take part in these wonderful events and make the most of the season ahead.

We hope you had a wonderful off season and are as excited as we are to welcome everyone back for another great pickleball season at GPYC!
As the courts come back to life, we look forward to seeing familiar faces returning for another season of friendly competition, social play, and active fun—while also welcoming new members into our growing pickleball community. Whether you are joining us for organized play, improving your game through instruction, or simply looking for another great way to connect with fellow members, this season promises plenty of opportunities to get involved.
Pickleball continues to be one of the fastest-growing and most social activities at the Club, bringing together players of all skill levels in an energetic and welcoming atmosphere. From competitive rallies to casual matches and post-game meet ups, the courts are sure to be buzzing all summer long.

New to the sport? Pickleball 101 is designed specifically for players with little to no experience. This four-week course begins June 2 and takes place Tuesdays from 5:30–7:00 p.m., offering a welcoming introduction to the game and its fundamentals.
Members looking for more personalized instruction can also take advantage of private, semi-private, and group lessons available throughout the season.
Court reservations may be made using Skedda, making it easier than ever to organize a match and spend time on the courts. Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming holiday events and interclub matches throughout the season. Kicking Off the Season
Welcome back to the harbor for the 2026 season! The weather is warming up, and we are looking forward to a great summer on the water. This month marks the official beginning of rendezvous season, and our first Club trip of the year will take us to Port Sanilac from June 26–28. Prior to that, our annual In-Harbor Rendezvous will take place June 12–14. Any Social Members interested in bringing their boat to the Club for the weekend are encouraged to reach out to Alex to coordinate arrangements. Whether you are preparing for one of these events or simply heading out for the weekend, please note that the gas dock is fully operational and open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
As everyone gets back into the swing of things, we ask that you keep a few standard harbor guidelines in mind to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all members. Our designated quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM, Sunday through Thursday, and from midnight to 8:00 AM on Friday and Saturday. Additionally, please remember the harbor dress code when walking around the grounds: ladies are required to wear a cover-up over swimwear, and gentlemen must wear a shirt. Finally, safety remains our top priority, and we remind everyone that there is absolutely no swimming permitted inside the harbor. We also highly advise that all children wear life jackets while on the docks. If you happen to forget yours, complimentary loaner life jackets are available in the dock box located next to the Grog Shop.

Functional training focuses on movements that mimic real-life activities like lifting, carrying, squatting, twisting, and balancing. As we age, this type of training becomes increasingly important because it helps maintain strength, mobility, and independence.
It’s not just about working out — it’s about staying capable in everyday moments:
• Picking up your grandkids
• Carrying groceries without strain
• Climbing stairs confidently
• Getting up off the floor
• Putting luggage in the overhead compartment while traveling
These simple tasks require coordination, balance, grip strength, and core stability — all things functional training improves.
Why Farmer Walks Matter
Farmer walks, where you carry weights while walking, are one of the best functional exercises because they directly mimic real life. They improve:

An Ode to Summer
Summer has erupted—let the pool days begin!
As summer finally comes alive at GPYC, our thoughts naturally turn to the poolside grill. This season is especially meaningful as we celebrate the final summer of this historic gem. The grill menu will be filled with fan favorites and delicious classics, ready to fuel your summer days by the water.
The pool grill officially opens seven days a week beginning Monday, June 15, welcoming not only the start of summer but also the return of kids’ camp—a tradition that brings incredible energy and lifelong memories to the Club. Watching children and families enjoy the activities, meals, and special events reminds us just how impactful these experiences can be. Thank you for your continued support in helping us create these meaningful moments.
Summer also brings an abundance of beautiful seasonal ingredients. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cucumbers, asparagus, rhubarb, radishes, peas, and spinach all begin to shine this time of year, with sweet cherries arriving toward the end of June. Michigan’s growing season delivers some of the freshest and most flavorful greens imaginable, making this the perfect time to enjoy crisp, refreshing salads bursting with seasonal flavor.
One of my personal favorites is a fresh strawberry salad made with Michigan strawberries—assuming the season and weather cooperate. Depending on the harvest, those berries may rotate with blackberries, raspberries, or even sweet cherries. One of my fondest childhood memories is riding three-wheelers into the strawberry fields and picking berries straight from the plants. Some were perfectly sweet, while others carried that tart bite of fruit not quite ready yet. Funny enough, those underripe berries now make excellent pickled strawberries, while the ripe ones remain perfect for summer salads.
Fresh greens create the perfect base, and I am a huge fan of pairing them with bold cheeses and bright dressings. Blue cheese offers a wonderfully robust flavor alongside a citrus vinaigrette, though goat cheese and feta are equally delicious choices. Goat cheese adds creaminess and richness, while feta brings a touch of salt that helps season the dish naturally.
Of course, every great salad needs texture. Many people love candied pecans or walnuts, but pita chips or other crunchy elements can provide that perfect contrast and bring the dish together.
On a warm summer evening, paired with a chilled glass of white wine and a view overlooking the lake, it is hard to imagine anything better. The breeze finally returns, the Club comes alive, and summer settles in around us.

Closing Out the Season… and a Chapter
We held our annual awards banquet on May 2, honoring our champions. Those who received awards were:

I also announced our Gene DiSante Memorial Award. This year’s recipient is Cathy Champion. Just like Gene, she reminds us all why we love this great game. When Cathy started bowling some 20 years ago, she only bowled because her husband, Kevin, made her. To this day, she still has a rule that the third game is optional.
The final award was given for Bowler of the Year. However, I wanted to honor everyone who has graced our GPYC lanes over the 30 years I have been here, so I named the award Bowler of the Last Quarter Century. I chose this award for someone who has represented the bowling program throughout my time at GPYC. I could only think of one person who truly represents our great Club — Howard Smith.
Howard has been a steady and familiar part of the GPYC bowling program. In many ways, he represents all of you and all those who came before us. He has had a lasting impact on both me and this Club.
As many of you know, I am stepping down as Director of Bowling Operations at GPYC. After 30 years, I found it was time to step aside and let someone else take the helm. Shane Ferris will be running things beginning in August. I have full confidence in Shane and trust that he will carry on the tradition we have built here at the Club. I will still be helping in a limited capacity to assist with his transition into the position.
This will be my last Up Your Alley article. For now, I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, and I hope to see you around the Club.

Jason M Geisz, has competed in the Bayview Mackinac Race for 24 consecutive years, winning back-to-back in 2009 and 2010, and being on the podium 4 other times in the last 5 years, after campaigning his Tripp 36, ‘Affirmed’, from 2011-2015. Jason is currently crewing on the SC70 ‘Evolution’, a member of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and CEO and Founder of Famiglia Wealth.

Kid's Cooking Class
Friday, April 10
Our young chefs enjoyed a fun and interactive class with Chef Eric as they learned the fundamentals of working with and preparing different pasta noodles. Chef Eric shared helpful kitchen tips and techniques while participants explored a variety of pasta styles and gained confidence in the kitchen.

Members welcomed the season at our Spring Into Summer Wine Event featuring wines from Wölffer Estate. The evening offered a wonderful opportunity to explore a curated selection of wines while enjoying great company and conversation.
Chef Eric perfectly paired the wines with thoughtfully crafted small plates that had members raving throughout the evening. The exceptional pairings, delicious cuisine, and warm atmosphere made for a memorable experience and a perfect toast to the season ahead. Cheers to a wonderful evening of wine, fellowship, and summer spirit.
Back to the Club Party

We had record-breaking attendance for our annual Back to the Club Party, welcoming over 150 members for an evening of fun. As one of the season’s signature kickoff events, Back to the Club Party brings our Club community together after the long winter months to reconnect, celebrate, and enjoy the excitement of summer ahead. The evening was filled with an energetic mix of musicians and instruments, creating a lively atmosphere that kept the celebration going all night long.
A special thank you to members Mary Kettler, Mary Ryan, and Jeff Gates for their help in planning the event alongside our team. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we look forward to another unforgettable season at GPYC!

GPYC Reciprocity
The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has reciprocity with numerous Clubs all over the world. Please contact us within 48 hours’ notice of which Club you would like to travel to and the duration of your stay. Once Membership has obtained all information necessary, we will reach out to the Club of your choice and provide them with a Letter of Introduction, as well as a point of contact to the Club you are visiting. Cancellation Policy
Members canceling a reservation for Club sponsored functions with less than 24 hours’ notice or not attending the function without giving notice will be charged the established price for each person involved. Thank you.

Summer Clubhouse
Attire Policy
(May 1 - October 31)
Gentlemen (ages 12-up): Collared shirts and/or sport coats are preferred; however, tasteful, collarless menswear may be permitted at management’s discretion. Tailored pants or denim are acceptable. Hoodies, t-shirts and hats are not permitted indoors. Attire, pants or denim with holes or rips, cut-off shorts, swimwear and shirts without sleeves are prohibited. Sandals may be worn, rubber shoes, or Crocs may not be worn. Shirts and cover-ups must be worn on
the Gazebo Deck while dining or seated at the bar area.
Ladies (ages 12-up): Blouse, sweater or collared shirt with tailored pants, denim or appropriate shorts may be worn. Dresses and skirts worn in good taste are also permitted. Hoodies and t-shirts are not permitted. Ladies may wear appropriate formal hats indoors. Leggings are permitted when worn as undergarments with a mid-thigh length top, sweater, skirt or dress. Attire, pants or denim with holes or rips, cut-off shorts and swimwear are prohibited. Sandals may be worn, rubber shoes, or Crocs may not be worn. Shirts and cover-ups must be worn on the Gazebo Deck while dining or seated at the bar area. Family friendly attire is required at the pool.
Athletic Attire: Athletic attire is permitted in the Fitness Center, Locker Rooms, and all outdoor areas. Tasteful athletic wear is allowed during breakfast and lunch service in the Binnacle, Main Dining Room and Spinnaker (excludes Sunday Brunch.) Members and guests wearing athletic attire are encouraged to enter and exit through the south side of the Clubhouse, either the locker room entrance on the lower level or the entrance nearest the Fitness Center.
Outerwear: All coats and outerwear must be worn or kept at coat check. Coats and outerwear are not to be hung on chairs in the dining room.
Event Specific Attire: Any events that require specific attire will be outlined in the event description or invitation.
Child Behavior: Members and guests shall not leave children unattended in and around the Clubhouse.
Online ReservationsDining
Make your reservations for our dining rooms through OpenTable! Simply visit our website or phone app, log in, and go to the “Reservations” tab. There, you will see an OpenTable widget where you can select the day and time to dine with us. Parties of 9 or more will need to call the Front Desk to make a reservations for all rooms.

2026 Nanny Passes
To request a Nanny Pass for the 2026 summer season, please contact Jennifer Benoit directly at jbenoit@gpyc.org with your nanny’s full name and phone number. Passes can be picked up at the Front Desk or mailed upon request.
Kid's Club
Children must be three years old and potty-trained. $30 for the first child, $25 for each additional child in the family, this includes a buffet made up of your children's favorites!
To maintain the appropriate staff-to-child ratio, the maximum number of children who can attend Kid’s Club is 6 children per sitter. Reservations are required. The cut-off for reservations is by 4:30 p.m. the day of. We understand things can happen last minute, but there will be an additional $20 charge per walk-in visit.

Did You Know? The Story Behind Pointe Club
Pointe Club is a club within the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club dedicated to creating opportunities for younger members and families to connect, socialize, and build lasting friendships within the Club community. Designed primarily for members ages 40 and under, Pointe Club focuses on fun, engaging social experiences while helping foster the next generation of Club leadership and membership. While many events are geared toward younger members, all members are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
The Pointe Club has a rich history at GPYC, dating back to 1985 when then-Commodore James R. Daoust recognized a desire for programming centered around the Club’s younger adult membership. The Pointe Club continued under Commodore John A. Boll and subsequent Commodores, operating successfully throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s. During that time, the group became known for creative and energetic programming that encouraged members to socialize and form lasting friendships.
Following in the footsteps of Commodores Daoust and Boll, the Pointe Club was reintroduced years later through the efforts of Commodore Sean Schotthoefer and Club leadership, reaffirming GPYC’s commitment to engaging younger members and families. Much like its original mission, today’s Pointe Club continues to provide an avenue for members to connect in a welcoming and social environment.
Member Tom Mellos, who co-chaired the Pointe Club during the late 1980s, once shared that “the Pointe Club’s objective was to offer creative events and provide an avenue for younger members to get together.”
That vision remains unchanged today. As Mellos jokingly noted about past events, “if you were 41, we didn’t kick you out.” The same spirit of inclusion continues to define Pointe Club programming.
Over the years, Pointe Club events have included Poolside Piano Bar parties, Road Rally scavenger hunts, TGIF pool parties, softball games between Pointe Club members and the Board of Directors and Bridge, and themed social gatherings that welcomed participation from fellow private clubs. Pointe Club has long embraced inter-club relationships, historically hosting and partnering with organizations such as the Detroit Athletic Club and other yacht clubs to broaden social connections among members.
One of Pointe Club’s signature events, Winter Blast, began as a Pointe Club gathering and has since evolved into one of GPYC’s most popular Club-wide traditions during the winter season. Early Winter Blast events welcomed more than two hundred attendees and included participation from Detroit Athletic Club Intermediate members, helping establish an inter-club relationship that encouraged camaraderie beyond GPYC.
The continued success of Pointe Club lies in its ability to bring members together in meaningful ways. Many members have formed friendships through Pointe Club that have lasted for decades. As Tom Mellos reflected, even after more than 25 years, he and his wife Betsy remain close friends with many of the people they met through Pointe Club.
Today, Pointe Club continues to honor its legacy while creating fresh opportunities for members to connect, celebrate, and enjoy all that GPYC has to offer.
