The Alger family’s vision began with service and that value remains at the heart of The War Memorial. Honoring our veterans is more than tradition; it is a continuing promise to remember their courage and preserve the values of duty, gratitude, and unity that define who we are

In 2025, thoughtful, yearlong tributes commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War’s end an enduring reflection of our community’s commitment to honor and remembrance.

Last year, we expanded free community programming and welcomed the joyful return of our Annual Tree Lighting celebration, a cherished tradition that continues to unite our community

That same spirit inspired more than 40 partnerships in 2025, building bridges with organizations that share our mission to enrich and strengthen the community

living legacy. Preserving the 1910 Alger House ensures that its stories, craftsmanship, and beauty continue to inspire future generations

PATRIOTIC PROGRAMMING

Honoring those who served

Our veterans are not just names in a history book. They are our fathers and our brothers, our mothers and our sisters, they are our friends and our neighbors. They are the heroes next door. Their stories of sacrifice and courage must be preserved and shared with every generation so that we as a community may always be mindful of the selfless, brave individuals that are responsible for keeping our nation free.

We accomplish this feat in multiple ways including the honor roll plaques we have on our walls and website, the Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge sculpture, our annual Memorial Day celebration, the military, historic and artistic exhibits in our gallery, our VetConnect Seminar Series and even more veteran focused events, giving our community a place to gather, reflect, and honor.

Memorial Day Ceremony*

This time-honored ceremony will include musical tributes, remarks of remembrance and honor, and a recitation of the names of Grosse Pointe residents who lost their lives in service to our country

This special lunch honors National Vietnam War Veterans Day Veterans and their families are invited to gather, share stories, and express gratitude for their bravery and sacrifice during the Vietnam War in a supportive environment Vietnam Vet Luncheon

A solemn celebration of togetherness in the wake of tragedy Moments of silence will be observed for the airplane crashes that hit the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, a field near Shanksville, PA, and for all lives lost on 9/11/2001 9/11 Ceremony*

This beloved annual celebration brings families and neighbors together to share in the joy and magic of the season through a series of cherished events. The festivities begin with a spectacular Tree Lighting Festival, illuminating our historic grounds and offering a special experience to visit with Santa. Guests are then invited to enjoy Bedtime Stories with Santa, three enchanting evenings where wonder and warmth meet featuring a complimentary session dedicated to children with special needs. The celebration continues with the ever-popular Breakfast with Santa, a joyful gathering for all ages complete with holiday crafts and Santa’s grand arrival by helicopter.

Experience the historic Alger House at its very best, festively decorated for the holiday season First we begin with a three-course holiday meal from our Executive Chef, followed by an upbeat musical performance Merry & Bright Dinner

Dress the kids in their comfiest PJs and let them snuggle by the fire as they join Santa for a magical evening. Children will listen to Santa read some of his beloved holiday stories, tell tales about life at the North Pole, and share his favorite treat: milk & cookies!

Where neighbors gather, music plays, and memories are made

Each summer, The War Memorial comes alive with Summerfest, a signature concert and movie series that unites families and neighbors on the scenic shores of Lake St. Clair. In keeping with our mission to remain accessible to all, many of these programs are offered free or at a reduced rate ensuring that everyone can share in experiences that inspire connection, celebration, and community pride. This sponsorship opportunity provides exceptional visibility while supporting one of Southeastern Michigan’s most cherished summer traditions.
