s the 2018-2019 Trenton High School girls basketball season wound to a conclusion in the state third-place game in Springfield, then-Head Coach Brian Upton began to sub out his five senior players one-by-one. It gave each an opportunity to receive the ovation they deserved for the fabulous four-year run they had propelled Trenton to. What was left on the court when the final substitution was made was a preview of Trenton’s future. A year later, the five seniors are gone, Upton is gone and a new era is dawning on the Trenton program. Kameron Cool has been tasked with overseeing the transition, making his head coaching debut. While the impossible expectations of the previous three seasons will not be delved out on this group, Trenton will hardly be a pushover in Cool’s inaugural season. The chief reason is Maci Moore. Moore was Trenton’s leading scorer during its state third-place season, averaging 17.2 points per game. She also added 7.7 rebounds per game, second high on the team, and two steals per game, third best on last year’s squad.
While it sounds bizarre to say the leading scorer on a team that finished third in the state will see her role increased, that is exactly what Trenton is looking at this season. Moore might not see her points per game total go up, but Trenton will definitely look at her as a first option more often than it did last year, when five seniors, including two who would go on to play basketball collegiately, were surrounding Moore. In anticipation of that, Cool has Moore looking to expand her game beyond just being the most dominating post player in the Grand River Conference.
“Maci, one thing she is going to have to do is expand her game a little bit,” Cool said. “We need to make sure she is a threat all over the floor and not just under the hoop. She has looked really good early on. She works really hard and is talented, so that is a really good combination for her, but she is just going to have to continue to work on expanding her game.” Seniors Lexi Whitaker and McKayla Blackburn each had roles on last year’s team and, while they were important, this year that duo will be thrust into starting positions. Whitaker is a tremendous athlete and a very good defensive stopper

PAGE 4 while Blackburn is a skilled ballhandler, something that was easy to overlook last season. Neither player averaged over five points per game last year, but both will see increased production this year. “For one they are great leaders,” Cool said of his two returning seniors. “They have been followers for a long time with that great group. They learned to lead through that, but they are really talented basketball players as well. When you are stuck behind some of the best basketball players in the area, people don’t get to see that as much, but they are really talented. I have the utmost confidence in them moving forward being leaders – both with leadership in general and also on the floor.” Chandler Lynch, Teya Cooksey and Gracyn Rongey rode the bench on last year’s team but, like Whitaker and Blackburn, will see increased roles on this team. It is likely Trenton’s fourth and fifth starters will come from this group. While the trio isn’t battle tested, they had a front row seat to watch the best Trenton girls basketball team ever – in terms of state finish - first hand. The trio has improved greatly though the summer and early in practice and Cool believes the improve-

TRENTON REPUBLICAN-TIMES ments and watching last year’s team first hand are directly related. “The experience of getting to be on that team, even though they weren’t key contributors, that’s invaluable,” Cool said. “Getting to watch that group make that run and getting to be a part of it and seeing that work day in and day out. I know they learned from that.” In addition to Lynch, Cooksey and Rongey – all sophomores – six other sophomores are on this year’s team as well. The nine classmates primarily made up Trenton’s junior varsity roster last year and that squad finished the season with a 7-1 overall record. Allena Allen and Kendall Crowley come in as seniors who have not been out for the sport in recent seasons. They each provided leadership in other sports, however, Allen with volleyball and Crowley with tennis. Trenton will look to that duo to help provide some depth on this year’s team. Cool will bring a bit of a different system in from what Trenton has ran in previous season’s under Upton. With four
starters to be replaced and the new system, Trenton isn’t expecting to pick up right where it left off in last year’s third-place state game. However, as the season goes along, Cool expects his squad to improve every time out. The main goal for this team will to be at its best at the end of the year. “Early on we are still trying to figure out roles and see where we fit the best together,” Cool said. “My goal is to make sure we are playing our best basketball at the end of the year. We have to understand
that, not only is it going to be new for the girls who haven’t played for a while, but also for the girls who have been a part of a system for the past three years. Everything I do might be a little different. So for us early on, we have just got to get better and keep learning. Then, hopefully by the end of the year, we are a really tough team that nobody wants to face.” Trenton’s girls will open the season tonight, traveling to Gower to face East Buchanan. Action is scheduled to tip off at 6 o’clock.

ear one is not just a season about the team, it is a program season. Corbin Coe heard those words this summer and they have stuck with him. It is a mantra with which he is attacking his first season as the head coach of the Trenton High School boys basketball team. For the most part, he is optimistic. He has a vision for what he wants this program to be. “We have to get stuff installed the way that we want, so there are no more year
ones,� Coe said. “We have got to get our offense in and our defense in. I care tremendously about this team, but the first year is a program season. Getting those things installed and just figuring out how we want to play and how we want to go about our business is really what we are trying to do this year.� Coe understands the pitfalls that come with installing a new system in a program, too. He lived it first hand at stops at Newtown-Harris, Brashear and King City be-
fore landing at Trenton. On top of that, Trenton isn’t exactly stocked with experience. The Bulldogs graduated four of its five starters off last year’s team. Two reserves who saw significant minutes are not out this year. Trenton’s new look will trickle all the way down from the coaching staff to the players on the court. What the Bulldogs do return, however, is Jaren Whitney. The senior started most of last season for the Bulldogs, an ankle injury being the only thing that stopped

him from starting all season long. Whitney, at times, was the best player on the floor for the Bulldogs last year and Coe will lean on his senior leadership and proficiency on the floor to help ease the transition. “Jaren is the one with the most experience coming back,” Coe said. “He started the majority of the games when he wasn’t injured. I’m looking for him to really lead us on the court. I would say he is probably going to be one of our top scorers and one of our top minutes getters this year.” After Whitney there is a substantial drop in minutes returning, but Royce Jackson gives Trenton another player who has some varsity experience. The Bulldogs will look for Jackson to step up into a vastly larger role this season after he scored just 13 varsity points last year. “Royce has kind of been our glue guy right now,” Coe said. “He has been vocal and he has been leading by example as well.” Other players returning with limited varsity experience include Chase Otto, Bryson Loyd and Gavin Roeder. The bulk of those players’ time last year came at the junior varsity level, however, and they will look to make the jump to varsity this year. That trio will likely produce at least two starters for Trenton this season. As inexperienced as the Bulldogs are, though, that remains in flux. Trenton will probably have multiple starting lineups this season – especially early on as Coe tries to get a grasp on what groups produce the best results. “Overall we are pretty inexperienced as far as varsity minutes logged and stuff like that,” Coe said. “Right now we don’t
know where we are going to be at for sure with who is starting and who is going to make varsity. I can tell you starters will not be in concrete. If there is a kid who plays his way into the starting role in February, he will be a starter at that point.” Coe’s ideal version of the Bulldogs will be a team that gets out and runs in transition. Pushing the ball into the attacking zone as quickl as possible will be paramount for the Bulldogs. Trenton will obviously have a variety of half-court sets to fall back on, but goal number one this season will be keeping the ball moving in transition. Defensively, Trenton will primarily be a man-to-man team, matching up with opponents whenever possible. That could present challenges at times, mainly when Trenton runs into standout players like they will in the season opener with East Buchanan and Ethan Kilgore – who recently committed to NCAA Division I school Idaho. “We are going to work at it and it is going to take some time,” Coe said. “It’s a lot of communication and it is a lot of movement. It is five guys working together out there. If we get beat on ball, if the guy is just blowing by us, there is no defense in the world that is going to change that, so we have got to really work on keeping our man in front of us and at least sweeping him three feet right or three feet left and have help defense there with it.” As far as team goals for the season, Coe isn’t looking to set numbers or placing as marks Trenton hopes to reach this year. Instead he is focused on setting up the basic ideals he hopes the program will be built

on. Transition on the court and competing every game stand at the top. “I can’t say what our goals should be with our win-loss record or where we finish in conference play,” Coe said. “That stuff will take care of itself. If we can get to where we are transitioning from defense to offense without much noticeable break in what we are trying to do, that would be a good goal. Then just competing, night in and night out. Whether it’s on the court or on the scoreboard or both, that would be great.” The key element for Trenton in year one will be time. It will take time for the inexperienced players to acclimate themselves to the game at the varsity level. It will take time for them to learn the system. It will take time to see results. But, if all goes well, Trenton will hope to start to see things come together over the course of this first season. Year one of Corbin Coe’s Trenton program begins tonight on the road against East Buchanan. The boys match-up follows a girls game that is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. in Gower.

harlie Bacon can’t help but be excited as he enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Trenton High School wrestling program. That’s because, for the first time in a long time, Trenton is looking at starting the season with a full lineup. Open weights have been problematic in recent years, costing Trenton shots to win duals and conference titles along the way. This year, though, at least in the beginning, Trenton is embarking with a wrestler at each of the 14 weight classes. “I just think looking through (the roster) - as long as everyone sticks it out and no one gets injured - we are going to be full for the first time in years,� Bacon
said. “Dual-wise that is huge. Every time you have an open, you lose six points.� Standing out in the full lineup are Mark Trump and Noah Lewis. Both were state qualifiers a year ago, Trump at 170 pounds and Lewis at 160. Trump finished the season with a 27-17 overall record while Lewis went 29-21. Bacon is looking for big things out of that duo. As seniors, they are providing leadership for a mostly-young wrestling team. They also have their sights set on bringing home some hardware at Mizzou Arena in February. “Both of those guys are in the same spot right now,� Bacon said. “They are looking really good in the practice room
and they are both state qualifiers. Neither one of them has medaled yet and they are seniors, so this is their last chance to get it done. I think that’s going to happen. They need to come home this year with a state medal. They are also two of my leaders, so it’s nice that my leaders are my kids who are going down to get big things accomplished at the state tournament.� Juniors Payden McCullough and Brice Gibler are back this season, as are sophomores Kaden Owen and Caleb Johnson. All four were varsity wrestlers a year ago, having up and down seasons. Bacon hopes the added year of experience those wrestlers gained will help them improve this season.

WINTER SPORTS 2019-2020 For Gibler and Owen, a trip to state was painfully close last season as they were each eliminated at districts just shy of punching their ticket to Columbia. Owen led Trenton in reversals on the season with 17 and tied Lewis for the most nearfalls with 27. Gibler and Owen won 27 and 28 matches, respectively, last year. Sophomore Trevor Murphy is out for the first time and will likely factor into the heavyweight position for the Bulldogs. What helps Trenton out the most in terms of filling out the varsity lineup is an exciting freshman class. Sam Gibson, Hunter McAtee, Coleman Griffin and Gavin Chambers have all had a lot of success at the middle school and kids wrestling levels. McAtee gives Trenton its first 106pound wrestler in several years. What has been a dead spot in the lineup will now have a wrestler capable of going out and earning points toward team totals. The level of competition will jump significantly for these wrestlers, who often times found themselves facing wrestlers that physically didn’t match up at lower levels. While they won’t walk through brackets now, Trenton’s freshmen should improve over the course of the season. “These kids have tons of experience,” Bacon said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun watching them wrestle. Hopefully they are ready for the high school level mentally.” The goal for all of Trenton’s wrestlers will be to be at their best by the end of the season when the real awards start to hit. The Bulldogs will travel to the Grand River Conference Tournament in Albany on Feb.1. Trenton has never won a GRC title since joining the league four years ago, but the short lineups have had an impact on that. The Bulldogs will enter this season believing they have a real shot at the conference crown if everyone stays healthy. “I think it is Gallatin and then there is us,” Bacon said. “I know Gallatin has lost a few good kids, but they still have plenty.
TRENTON REPUBLICAN-TIMES It will be a fun GRC Tournament with this group of kids that I have got.” A conference title would be a nice prelude to Bacon’s ultimate goal. While it will take some wrestlers stepping up and much of the freshmen class getting over the learning curve over the course of the season, Trenton is gunning for a top 10 finish at state. Trenton’s last state trophy in wrestling came in 2006, when the Bulldogs were third overall as a team. Trenton was also a top 10 team in 2007 and 2008, placing ninth, in each of those years. Trenton’s last top 10 state finish came in 2011, when the Bulldogs were fifth overall, just missing a state trophy by a mere 2.5 points. “I’ve got really high expectations because I have Noah and Mark leading a group of wrestlers that really have a lot of potential,” Bacon said. “It’s all going to be if we can move up to that next level. If we can, we need to win 90 percent of our duals and, by the end of the year, it would be great if we could be in at least the top 10 at state. That’s something we used to do pretty consistently and we haven’t done that in several years.” Trenton opens the season on Saturday, Dec. 7, traveling to the Tiger Mat Classic in Marceline.
GIRLS WRESTLING Trenton’s girls wrestling program will enter its second year of existence with five wrestlers. Only senior Libby Fewins is back from last year’s team. “Libby is our senior leader,” Bacon said. “Last year was her first year and for the rest of our girls, this year is their first year. So Libby knows exactly what those girls are going through and some of the growing pains that you face as a first-year wrestler, whether you are a girl or a guy. It doesn’t really matter.” Behind Fewins, Trenton has Kaitlee Lovell, also a senior, and Faith Baker, Emma Dodson and Allison Yoder. Having five wrestlers represents a jump for Trenton, which bounced between two and three wrestlers on the girls’ side last year. “We have Kaitlee, who is also a senior and she has signed up for the National Guard,” Bacon said. “Physically she is very capable, it is just a matter of learning the technique.” Trenton’s girls will have a tough test to get to state. The sport is still relatively new so all schools in the state compete in one Class level. That puts Trenton in a district with the likes of Kearney, Liberty North and Platte County, larger schools with full lineups on the girls side.
Page 9 “My goal for the girls this year is to take a couple of them to state,” Bacon said. “Libby is very strong and now she has figured out the technique which is very important, too, so I think this year might be her year to maybe qualify. “It’s a challenge to get to state for them because it’s not divided into four classes like it is for the boys. So when you are going up against Kearney, who has a full lineup, they have more practice partners, they have separate practice times and they have bigger coaching staffs. Our girls are really going to have to step it up.”

Both have played key minutes in the past and have shown they are ready to make the step up into the starting positions. Our kids are looking to make a run at the conference title again this year and feel that we are one of the top teams in a much tighter HDC conference this year. Winston, along with North Harrison and Grundy, look as though they could also be in contention for the title as well.”
