Viking Valley Association Board Meeting Call to Order Phil Stockard called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the clubhouse. Members in attendance were Troy Lesan, Flint Hibler, James Funk, Mike Booth and Susan Zalenski. Mike Krehbiel was unable to attend. Shad Mort led the Pledge of Allegiance. Troy Lesan led in prayer. Approval of Minutes Troy Lesan moved to approve the minutes of the June 10, 2018, meeting. Flint Hibler seconded; motion carried. Volunteer Recognition Glenn Miller was not present, but Phil Stockard recognized Glenn with a Certificate of Appreciation for his work on the Finance Committee. Committee Reports Handbook Committee: No report. Finance Committee: Troy Lesan reported on the finances. Our day-to-day operating expenses are down right now and income is up. Even though the income is up, looking at the Dues and Assessments income, the number of members not paid has increased this year. Looking at Capital Expenditures, the campground upgrade expense is up, the long reach repairs exceeded the budget, so the trade for a mini excavator has been removed from Capital Expenditures for this year. Strategic Planning Committee: Susan Zalenski reported on the hog raffle that was held over the 4th of July. The raffle brought in $830. The Incorporation Committee should be ready to present their findings in September. It was suggested the Dredge Committee be removed from Strategic Planning and added to the Lake Committee. Troy Lesan was opposed to this move. There was a brief discussion and Phil Stockard would like the Board to review all committees and possibly restructure some of the committees to fit today’s needs. The Strategic Committee is working on a list of topics to improve the lake and help it to continue to grow. Activities Committee: Flint Hibler reported there were 15 vendors at the 4th of July Bazaar last weekend and next weekend will be the “Kids Games in the Park” from 10 a.m. to noon. Building Committee: The Building Committee approved six permits at their last meeting. Fire Department: Tony Gronniger said the Fire Department is still actively looking for a new fire truck. The Fire Department helped out with the fireworks on June 30. The new training room is still in need of some electrical work. The smoke alarms from the Red Cross are available now, so Tony asked for any volunteers that might help install them. Campground: No report. Lake Committee: The Lake Committee prepared letters at their last meeting for their recent inspections. The next meeting will be on July 19 and they will be doing more water inspections. Also at their next meeting, Troy Lesan said they would be discussing wake boats. Cemetery: No report. Infraction Committee: No report. Dredge Committee: Shawn Hepinstall reported the dredge is back in the water. We will be firing it up this week and checking that repairs are all complete. We are looking to start dipping at the south end structure when the long reach is ready to go. There were questions about bulldozing that sediment structure out and Shawn commented there was probably water about 8’ down and the cost to hire someone is just not in our budget. Lake Manager Report 1. Dredge: Shad Mort let the Board know he is planning on a trial run of the dredge this week. The long reach has been in Kansas City for repairs and still has an issue. He will have to call to get someone out here to look at it. 2. Campground upgrade: Most of the electrical has been completed in the campground, but if anyone else wants to be upgraded to 50 amp they need to let us know before Oct. 1. 3. 4th of July: Shad believes it was the calmest in recent memory. The lake’s fireworks show had to be shortened because of rain, but we did get it in. 4. Dry conditions: Shad informed the members they need to please pay attention to the “Burn Ban.” With no significant rain in the forecast the conditions are extremely vulnerable for fires. If anyone sees anyone burning or attempting to burn, please call Safety and report it.

Financials: Troy Lesan moved to approve the financial reports. James Funk seconded; motion carried. Guest Time: 1. Brett Bush addressed the Board about dumpsters on construction sites. One of Brett’s projects was issued a ticket for trash onsite. The Handbook requires contractors to have some kind of moveable container onsite when the foundation is complete. That was not the case in this matter. Shad Mort asked Brett when he thought a trash container should be placed on the site? Brett’s response was, when roofing and sheet rocking begins. Kit Starr asked if just containing the trash was the issue and the Board’s response was yes. They do not want to see lumber, paper or any debris laying around a construction site. Shad Mort commented on the bigger issues with our trash right now and it is getting out of hand. There has been construction materials found in the lake’s dumpsters and this creates more weight, which means more money for trash service. 2. Bo Steed had several issues to discuss with the Board. Bo is concerned about the high traffic on the lake, especially on holiday weekends. He believes it is unsafe conditions and people are running inside the buoys and even hitting the buoys. Another issue is wake boats. Bo says they do a lot of damage to docks and thinks they need to be limited to run only in the main channel of the lake and 250’ from docks. He wants the Board to look at the amount of traffic on the lake. Bo lives in what is known as the “Party Cove” and he asked how we could curb the foul language he hears on the water. Bo also made comments about the installation of silt fences. The Board took all of Bo’s issues under advisement. Board Action: 1. Jon Allen (who was not present) contacted the Board about a dock he felt was encroaching on his property line. The Board’s question is whether the property line extends into the water. Mike Booth referred to the Handbook, page 24, “Survey markers/rebar must be clearly visible when setting docks, platforms, lifts, boat ramps or walkways to insure easement compliance.” Phil Stockard asked that this be reviewed by the Building Committee and bring back their recommendations as to where that line extends to. 2. Building Permit Fees: Phil Stockard reminded the Board of the schedule of building fees with increases that was presented to them two months ago from the Finance Committee. Phil Stockard moved to accept the new fees as presented. Susan Zalenski seconded; motion carried. The new fees will go into effect 10 days from this meeting. The new fees are as follows: CURRENT FEE $1,000.00 $450.00 $300.00 $250.00 $250.00

VVA Board Minutes linquent in their dues, but they still use the lake by accessing a family member or friend’s guest card. It is pretty black and white in the handbook, if you are not a member in good standing you have no privileges. Phil’s take is, you can’t be a member and a guest, so if you are a delinquent member you should not have access by guest card. It was the consensus of the Board and members present that Phil’s thoughts are correct. Adjourn: Flint Hibler moved to adjourn into Executive Session at 7:55 p.m. James Funk seconded; motion carried. Runway for Aircraft Only Now that spring is here, not only is there an increase in boat traffi c, but also more aircraft using the LV airport. While we do not have a great deal of air traffi c, remember that our runway is for aircraft use only. For your protection, and that of others, please keep all vehicles and pedestrians clear of the airport runway at all times.

Meet the Polowniak’s!

Nestled on top of Lot 56 you will find one of the sweetest families on Lake Viking. In 2008 Shawn and Rebecca purchased their lot and built their well known "cabin" in 2010. The Polowniak's reside full time in Stillwell, KS but are very familiar faces on the lake, usually doing some fancy surfing on the water! Becca is a horse lover and spends most of her time at the barn, managing their home, or caring for their 2 daughters Morgan and Molly. Shawn is an owner in Dumpster Guy, a commercial and residential rolloff dumpster company. When asked what their favorite thing was about Lake Viking, Shawn said, "Life moves at such an incredible rate of speed. We all yearn to spend quality time with those we love. Lake Viking gives us the gift of time, time spent on the boat, the dock, the ranger, the deck, time spent with friends, time around the fire, time to tell our kids what's really important in life. Lake Viking makes us a better family." Stop by Lot 56 and meet the Polowniak's, you will be glad you did.

issouri waterways have become increasingly busy over the past few decades. Along with the increased boat traffic, the size of motorboats continues to grow, particularly on our larger lakes. Where there are boats, there are boat wakes. Please join the Missouri State Highway Patrol in promoting wake courtesy to minimize the danger to others using our waterways, damage to docks, and erosion to our shorelines. Operating a motorboat at “plowing” speed is necessary at times, but should not be the norm. Please make note of these reminders so you are part of the solution and not part of the problem: Operate your boat at idle speed, or when you are safely able to do so, operate on plane. Do not continuously plow unless absolutely necessary. Boats that cause excessive wakes should always operate in the middle of the lake to allow their boat wake time and distance to lose energy. Plowing within cove locations is discouraged, unless safety or water sport activities require you to do so. Water sport activities requiring excessive boat wakes should be reserved for areas of our lakes where the danger to boaters, damage to docks, or significant shoreline erosion is limited. Cruiser and houseboat owners and operators are a significant and important part of our boating communities, but these boat owners and operators require heightened awareness of the wake they are causing. Remember to be courteous. If you were in a small boat attempting to navigate your boat wake, or you owned a dock that has to survive your boat wake, would you be operating in the same manner? Treat other boaters and property owners as you would want to be treated. Causing harm to another person or their property with an excessive boat wake may subject you to enforcement action or civil liability. The great state of Missouri has many beautiful waterways, all of which allow for a wide variety of boating activities. Responsible and courteous boaters help make our waterways safe and enjoyable for everyone’s use. The above is reprinted, with permission, from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Water Patrol Division website. As you can see, the state of Missouri, like Lake Viking, is fighting to prevent damage to docks and shorelines from excessive boat wakes. Although not all applies to LV (houseboats?), courtesy and awareness of your boat wake will help the Association avoid making unnecessary and restrictive boating rules. Help us protect our members’ docks and shorelines. Lake Viking Board of Directors Lake Viking Safety Department SHP-272 3/2016

Attention Dock Owners!! Boat dock wiring must be protected by a ground fault interrupter (GFI). If your dock wiring is not GFI protected an electric accident can occur. You can purchase a GFI electrical tester at any hardware store to see if you are already protected or contact a qualifi ed electrician to install a GFI to protect your dock.

Video featuring Lake Viking to debut on CMT by T.L. Huffman, staff writer

Mike Caudle came back to his hometown to make a video for CMT which will debut July 4 worldwide. The video features a rising star country duo known as Post Monroe. Mike is a 1995 graduate of Winston High School. He attended UCM at Warrensburg and ended up in the hospitality industry. He moved to Iowa in 2000. He was a co-owner of a live music venue in West Des Moines, IA. Mike’s introduction to the film business came in 2010 when he submitted a concept for a “bar rescue” style show called “American Spirits”. Mike says he was one of the first to offer a nightclub-style show to the network show runners. The producers passed on his concept; however, filming for “Bar Rescue” suddenly was announced for Spike TV just four weeks after his contract had expired. “It happens all the time in Hollywood,” he says. “They took elements of our concept and did something that cost less per episode than our show would have been.” Mike wasn’t angry or bitter about it… “I was excited that they thought our idea was good enough for a produced show.” Mike got a second break when he produced six episodes of “The Fence” which covered the sensitive issue of suicide among America’s veterans. His video was purchased by Air National Guard and was used as a training module for suicide prevention. During this time, Mike still co-owned the Bombay Bicycle Club, but he and his partners decided to sell the place in 2012. He thought about opening a new bar, but realized he was happier making films than being in the bar business. He connected with Jacob Moyer, the owner of Luminary Creative, a video and film-making company who had worked with Mike on several productions. He asked Jacob to teach him the business. “Everybody thought I was crazy,” he says. “How was I going to make a living doing film in (Continued Des Moines, Iowa?” (continuedon onnext page page) 12)

The video featuring Lake Viking and other areas of Daviess County will air soon on CMT. Stills from the video have been posted recently on Post Monroe’s website.

Ashley Hewitt of Post Monroe was recently on ABC’s show “The Proposal”. Whitney Duncan of Post Monroe was on Survivor, where she met her husband Keith. They later appeared in season 25 of the TV show “Amazing Race” together. Both women are songwriters for Sony ATV in Nashville, TN. Along with Mike Caudle (producer and co-writer) and Jacob Moyer (director and co-writer), other members of Luminary Creative team helping make the video in Daviess County were Caden Moyer (2nd Camera), Ethan Lindsey (production assistant) and hair & makeup artist Jenni Harrison. Jenni and Mike have been together since 2012 and have a soon to be three-year-old son, Charley.

But Luminary Creative has been very successful, winning many awards, including numerous Emmy and Telly awards; and is now in its eighth year. The crew is all skilled in music videos, advertising, political ads, brand videos, feature films, short films, corporate videos and government contracted videos. To see some of their work you can visit www.luminarycreative.com. Luminary Creative was filming a movie in Minnesota when Mike and Jacob worked with actor Bryson Sams, a cast member. Bryson’s father, Dean Sams, is a founding member of Lonestar, the famous country music band. After the film wrapped Dean Sams asked Luminary to submit a video treatment for an upcoming song release for Lonestar. “Our video for ‘Just the Rain’ was the unanimous pick among the band members,” Mike said. A year later, Luminary was called back to do another video for Lonestar’s tenth studio album, “Never Enders”. “That was when we started meeting a lot of agents and music people in Nashville,” says Mike. We made the decision to open up our second office there.” Ashley Hewitt of Post Monroe, worked

with Luminary on the set of a movie. She loved working with Jacob, Luminary’s director, and wanted to work with him on her videos. Later she and Duncan formed Post Monroe. Post Monroe is a country duo comprised of Whitney Duncan and Ashlee Hewitt. Post Monroe was named Rolling Stone Country’s ‘10 Artists You Need To Know’ and have performed multiple times on The Grand Ole Opry. They are also part of CMT’s Next Women of Country. Luminary Creative has done six videos for the singing group to date. This year Post Monroe called and explained that due to the recent success on iTunes, CMT wanted a video for their new song, “Coke & Rum.” “We have been extremely busy, and only had one available day on our calendar, so we told them they had to come to us,” Mike says. “We were worried if the weather wasn’t good we would miss the window.” Mike, who grew up at Lake Viking, thought the lake would be the perfect backdrop for the video. The filming was done the night of Friday, June 15, and wrapped around 1 a.m. the following Sunday morning. “Everyone in the community jumped

on board and helped us,” he says. “They provided us with everything we needed for the video. We asked for two special trucks and we had them in 10 minutes.” The Gallatin square is used in one video scene and Mayor Barb Ballew’s home was also used as a location. The town was filmed at night and appeared empty except for the two Post Monroe girls cruising around. They drive through the one stop light in town and see the girls’ crushes in a truck. They pull over in front of Elbert’s where the scene ends. Another scene is filmed on a long gravel road near Altamont. The rest of the scenes are filmed at Beach One at Lake Viking. “We scouted Lake Viking prior to shooting the video,” says Mike. “The three minutes of video came out of 18 hours of film footage. Luminary had worked previously with Randy Tague of the Lake Viking Marina. Luminary filmed a commercial for the marina last summer. Randy helped introduce Luminary to Jackie and Kenny Derks. The Derks loved the idea of filming at their beautiful lake home and opened their doors to Luminary. “They have the perfect dock built for fun!” said Mike. “Kenny and Jackie Derks

were incredible hosts. They invited 50 of their closest friends, family, and neighbors to be extras. They provided food and drinks for everyone. As well as inviting Post Monroe to stay with them while filming. They personally cooked and served all the meals. They went above and beyond, we couldn’t be more grateful to Derks for their hospitality!” The premier of the video is being handled by CMT (Country Music Television). CMT will debut the video Wednesday, July 4, 2018. The video will be in rotation during CMTs’ regular weekend programming. “We would also like to thank the City of Gallatin, Mayor Barb Ballew, the Lake Viking Association, Shad Mort, the Lake Viking Fire Department volunteers, Lake Viking Marine, Rob’s Cycle and everyone that helped us in the making of “Coke & Rum” music video. “I think growing up at the Lake, going to a small school, working at the McDonald’s Tea Room, and being surrounded by so many great people in our community has really helped me in all of the videos I do today,” said Mike. “I think it’s easier to connect with people when you come from a small town; it has been a place I have drawn a lot of inspiration from in all of my video work.”

Lake Viking Celebrates July 4

This boat could be seen on the lake proudly displaying the American Flag.

These Lake Viking plaques made by Jon Hausman were among the many items sold at the craft bazaar.

Above, the artist at work. Below, the Clubhouse was so full of items for the Craft Bazaar, these pallets made by Marj Locker were on display outside.

By Troy Lesan The July 4th celebration at Lake Viking is always the busiest and most celebrated time of the year, yet each holiday weekend is unique, just a little bit different from the others. Especially this year. If one had to choose a title for this year’s holiday, it would be “Where Are the Boats?” There were cars everywhere, in all the driveways, but traffic on the water was unusually light. As for fireworks day, on June 30, the day started as usual with the well attended Lions Club breakfast. In fact food was plentiful throughout the day with four food trucks. There was also the craft bazaar at the clubhouse. Activities Chair Mary Hibler was pleased with the turnout of the Craft Bazaar – both in the number of attendees and vendors. Maybe part of the reason for a good crowd was the opportunity to buy a raffle ticket for a butchered hog donated by Ricky Hendricks, who is the brother of longtime Association Employee Rusty Hendricks and the owner of the Chillicothe Locker. There were two winners of the raffle, each winning half a hog. One of the winners was Greg DeCamp while the other winner was Joan Trozzolo. This was a pleasant twist of irony. Earlier in the day, kids from the Trozzolo family were giving away free ice cream from their dock. As they say, what goes around comes around. Finally, as the evening wore on, it was time for the association fireworks display. As everyone knows, June was hot . . . and dry. The area has been desperately short of rain with the lake level lower than it has been in years. But wouldn’t you know it, just as darkness approached and the temperature had taken a rather dramatic plunge from a high of 96 to 83 degrees . . . a big rain cloud appeared in the sky. Sprinkles of rain were felt as the fireworks began. Fearing more rain, the fireworks people hurried through the program. The fireworks were spectacular as usual, but lasted only ten minutes! Our back yard has one of the lake’s best views of the Beach One fireworks display. Over the years, we have noticed that when all of the boats come out to watch the fireworks, they hang farther back in the lake. Part of the reason is that security directs them to do so, in order to avoid congestion from boat traffic. But I think another reason is so the boaters have a better view of what has unofficially become “part two” of the Lake Viking fireworks show, that being the spectacular fireworks extravaganza put on at Beach Two by the Confortis. This year’s version started right after the Association’s display ended and went on for an unbelievable time of fifty-seven minutes! Wow. July 4 at Lake Viking is history now. Again, we were fortunate to have a safe holiday. There was at least one emergency responder call to assist an Association member. The individual, who remains anonymous, nevertheless would like to express gratitude for the Lake Viking Safety Officers and emergency responders who were on hand to assist. The pictures accompanying this article document the holiday activities, and, oh yes, also a short exclusive breaking news report of an “Alien Invasion” at Lake Viking. There are also interesting features in this edition of the Lake Viking News on a motorcycle trip to Alaska and a CMT music video filmed at Lake Viking. Enjoy!

MSHP Announces 2018 Operation Dry Water Enforcement Results

Colonel Sandra K. Karsten, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the results of enforcement efforts to detect impaired boat operators in conjunction with the national “Operation Dry Water” campaign. This is the 10th year for the national effort, and Missouri has participated since the program’s inception. This year’s Operation Dry Water campaign occurred June 29-July 1, 2018. Troopers conducted saturations and worked extended shifts to bring heightened awareness to the issue of boating while intoxicated. Troopers arrested seven people statewide for boating while intoxicated, contacted 710 vessels and 2,301 boaters, and issued 84 boating violation summonses and 951 warnings. Marine operations troopers also issued 125 summonses for non-boating violations during the 2018 Operation Dry Water weekend. Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober operator is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in their boating experience. Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Super Motocross Track evident at Big Creek Ranch

From the north end of the Lake Viking dam, it’s evident there has been expansion at South Big Creek Ranch and ATV Park, which is owned by Ben and Hope Becerra. Ben says the new Super Motocross Track opened the weekend of July 21. The dirtwork was completed by Andrew Lollar of Lollar Excavating in about a week. The new track for dirt bikes and four-wheelers consists of tabletops, jumps and rollers, which will require riders to possess some technical skill. Ben said he’s also expecting a couple of pro riders to come try out the track soon!

North to Alaska – 9,325 miles on a motorcycle By Troy Lesan Some people have a knack for “timing.” Take Jeff Hower for example. It was as if he looked into his crystal ball, anticipated the hottest June in years with temperatures hovering around 95 on many days, and took off on his motorcycle for Alaska. It was a breezy little jaunt: 9,325 miles, 20 days on the road toward Deadhorse, AK, and back. As it turned out Jeff didn’t go all the way to Deadhorse because of storms turning the gravel road to goo. He did make it to the Arctic Circle, so yes, Jeff definitely escaped the heat. As his trip log showed, most days had highs in the 60s and 70s with his lowest experienced temperature at 48. (Ahhh! As I write this article on July 12, it’s 102 and those temperatures sound heavenly!) Jeff is an experienced adventurer. He’s ridden his motorcycle in many far away and exotic places that most of us wilI never see, and he has written extensively in motorcycle journals documenting his travels. On this journey, he kept a daily trip log recording miles travelled, daily temperatures and locations. Jeff camped in his tent for 16 nights, stayed in a hotel four nights due to nasty weather, and spent one night in a University of Alaska dorm room in Fairbanks. At the campsite he cooked and prepared his own meals every night but one. Jeff is an avid photographer and I’m guessing he took over a thousand pictures of the Alaska trip. Definitely not a “selfie” sort of guy, he will often take photos of his bike parked in front of a sign designating a famous landmark such as the Arctic Circle or the Yukon Territory or in front of a dramatic scene such a mountain range or a pristine waterfall. Jeff put in long, productive days riding, logging as many as 625 miles in one day but often averaging 300 or 400 miles daily. He encountered the ordi-

nary problems to be expected from the trip: cold showers, occasional bumpy Alaskan roads, riding in the rain, an occasional ATM not working. And the extraordinary ones such as endless swarms of mosquitoes and, oh yes, bears! The presence of bears weighed heavily on considerations for the trip. At the campsites at night, Jeff dined mostly on stuff like jerky, cheese and crackers. Cooking would have most definitely attracted bears. And the farther [Continued on page 17]

Two examples of the trip’s spectacular scenery: Mountains are northwest of Calgary. River scene is in British Columbia close to the Yukon.

north Jeff went, the more bears he saw: four and five a day and seven in one day. All Jeff’s bear sightings were black bears. (By the way: ask Jeff to tell you about his bear repellent.) No grizzlies, although there was much evidence of their presence. Hint: whenever you’re up north and see deep gouging claw marks about eight feet high on a tree, you know you’re in grizzly country. They love to mark their territory and maybe that’s a good thing. It warns everyone else of their presence. Jeff had his trip meticulously planned and his itinerary allowed time for a favorite hobby: geo-caching. He’s part of a large worldwide group that participates in an ongoing global scavenger hunt. They bury stuff somewhere – anywhere! – while posting the GPS co-ordinates online to provide for discovery The more remote, the better. Jeff has found 1,441 geocaches in 49 states, Washington D.C. and in 11 different countries. As the accompanying photos will show, Jeff had another great adventure on his motorcycle, although when he arrived back home at Lake Viking, wouldn’t you know, it was still HOT! We were really hoping that he might bring back some of the cool weather, and yes, even some of the moisture – but not the mosquitoes please. Leave them in Alaska.

Bears were everywhere. This is a paw from a smaller specimen (Jeff must have sedated the critter with his bear repellent).

‘Alien Invasion’ @ Lake Viking By Troy Lesan I’ll put it this way: Tomoyuki Tanaka would be turning over in his grave. For those who don’t know, Tanaka was one of the creators of the Japanese Horror Classic Godzilla. First appearing in 1954, Godzilla has become a worldwide pop culture icon. Looking at Godzilla 64 years later, especially compared to the ultra hi-tech studio creations in today’s multi-million dollar movie industry, the creature looks pretty hokey, almost comical, but in its day (for those who are old enough to remember), Godzilla struck fear and terror into the hearts of movie audiences. A generation previous had experienced even greater terror with the 1938 Orson Welles radio production War of the Worlds. Wells at the time had a radio show in which he did a broadcast version of the H.G. Wells novel by the same name. The broadcast in which Orson Welles simulated coverage of an alien invasion (Martians in this case) caused mass hysteria among a large radio audience. People jumped off bridges and fled the cities en masse causing traffic jams. Welles for his part was propelled to instant fame and went on to become a famous movie actor and producer. Now, 80 years after the War of the Worlds scare, I must announce the arrival of aliens at Lake Viking. Seriously! This alien invasion had inauspicious beginnings with the first sighting probably being the giant unicorn on David and Dustin Hibler’s shoreline. Then, there was the big blue peacock brazenly perched in the water just south of the Association Safety Patrol Dock. Next, was the arrival of a huge pink flamingo not far from our place. In fact, every day, I can see the creature’s giant pink head looming above the tree line to the west. These things are everywhere. They’re popping up all over the lake: some large, some smaller and all carrying the same DNA. The unicorns, for example, all have that same rainbow colored tails, the same bland, sedated expressions on their faces, and somewhere in the mix there are big plastic chickens as well. Thankfully, Lake Viking people are taking the arrival of these creatures in stride – flying by them on jet skis, pontoons, Cobalts, and fishing boats without a second thought. No panic, no hysteria, only stoic acceptance. Maybe it’s because of an appearance that is somewhat attractive in a weird sort of way: bright neon colors, striking profiles . . . and some of the alien creatures even appear to be smiling.
