Officially, the Daviess County Health Department states that there is no confirmed COVID-19 case to report in Daviess County. It is hoped that final test results will arrive soon. Meanwhile, owners Liz and Darryl Wilkinson have made arrangements to produce a print edition which will be distributed on Friday. Besides the different delivery date, the paper’s format will be altered since the printing will be performed at a different printing plant. “Once the coronavirus threat was identified late Monday evening, our immediate efforts were focused on the health and safety of our employees. Then we worked through various complications to help 10 of our weekly printing customers produce and distribute their newsprint products,” says Wilkinson. “There were problems and delays. But getting through this week was only possible through assistance from Cameron Newspapers Inc. and Holt County Publishing Co. at Mound City, and our sincere thanks go out to them. “By working through all these details, we realized a path whereby we could produce an abbreviated version of our own newspaper for distribution within this week. Although radically different in content and style, this edition will meet our obligations to subscribers, advertisers — and proceedings involving legal notifications — without disruption. “We appreciation the consideration and understanding given to us by all concerned during these trying circumstances.”

Robert and Deborah Dungy and Jeremy and Rikki Dungy purchased the grocery store in April of 2005 from Steve and Sandy Evans. Through the years, there have been several changes in the store as it moved away from the deli and bakery business and added a liquor department. In December of 2017, a 70-foot stretch of coolers was replaced and converted from open door to closed door. New meat, produce and dairy cases were added and all the old and new equipment received new LED lighting. A compressor room in the back streamlined all the heating and cooling and ventilation equipment that used to be on the roof. New grocery carts and a new digital video sign rounded out the work done in 2017. Look for the Dungy’s display ad inserted each week in the Ad Zone. You will also find hundreds of specials throughout the store. Dungy’s Facebook site offers store sales, updates and news. Watch for a 15-year anniversary celebration later in the year, hopefully this summer.

Letter to the editor:

Daviess County, Missouri is the absolute best! This has been proven time and again these last few weeks during this COVID-19 pandemic. Our center has had so many residents, businesses, and groups contact us wanting to help. It is truly amazing. And my staff, well I cannot say enough about them. You can’t work at the Active Aging Resource Center without truly caring for our clients and growing to love them. I am blessed to be a part of this center. We are and will be doing our best to help keep our older adults safe and healthy. We are currently delivering meals once a week to our Meals on Wheels clients and any former dine-in clients that request meals. And we are making well-check phone calls to assure our clients are ok. Amid this pandemic, we are adapting as needed to our changing landscape. We typically do several larger fundraisers a year to help make up the 51% of our budget needed from local funds. In October, BTC Bank and GHS FBLA hosted a Community Lunch. We had Light a Candle fundraiser around the holidays. The Subaru Share the Love Event was from November to January and we did March for Meals this past month. Other local funds came from the Daviess County Senior Citizens’ Service Fund, memorial donations, the Fellowship of Christian Women, and some very dedicated consistent donors like Frost Automotive and The Mustard Seed in Jamesport. Our board had planned to do a fundraiser dinner in May to help offset the projected $14,000 deficit this fiscal year. But as the saying goes, “Be stubborn about your goals, and flexible about your methods.” So instead, I am asking for your help once again with our Sponsor a Senior fundraiser. Here’s how it works. Your tax-deductible donation of $100 will Sponsor a Senior for one month of Meals on Wheels. $300 will Sponsor a Senior for 3 months and $1,200 will Sponsor a Senior for a whole year. You can make checks payable to Active Aging Resource Center. A tax receipt will be provided to you. Thank you in advance for Sponsoring a Senior and helping our center remain a viable part of the lives of older adults in Daviess County. We are all in this together. Sincerely, Deanna Lewis Administrator, Active Aging Resource Center

Hamilton doesn’t quite make the cut The results are in. Unfortunately, Hamilton did not advance to the championship round in the Strongest Town competition, according to Bob Hughes, vice-chair of the Hamilton Area Chamber of Commerce. Strong Towns is a national media organization whose mission is to advocate for a model of development that allows America’s cities, towns and neighborhoods to grow financially strong and resilient. “I take great pride and encouragement from the fact that Hamilton even advanced to the final four,” said Mr. Hughes. “From the very beginning, we were the smallest town in the competition. This shows what we can do when we all work together for the betterment of our community.” There are many worthwhile projects that are in store for Hamilton, Mr. Hughes added. “No matter what other people think, Hamilton will always be ‘The Strongest Town.’”
