Volunteers Honored At Breakfast
Trenton Alum Emphasizes Need To Care Volunteers with Bright Futures Trenton were assured that even the smallest gestures can make a big difference in the life of a child when they gathered to celebrate one year of the organization’s presence in Trenton. Sara Faubion Stipkovits, a 2000 graduate of Trenton High School, was the guest speaker for the event, held in the THS commons on Friday morning. Mrs. Stipkovits, who called herself the “poster child” for the idea that education is the key to success, went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from William Jewell College and her law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. She is currently an attorney with Peterson and Associates in Kansas City. Mrs. Stipkovits didn’t dwell on her accomplishments, however, choosing

to focus on those who helped her get there. She recalled being in third grade at Rissler Elementary School and the impact her teacher, Jane Cooksey, made on her. She recalled Mrs. Cooksey comforting her one morning after a tumultuous night by explaining that “sometimes adults make bad decisions.” Empathy, she said, has a powerful effect. As she grew older and became involved in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, it was Dorothy Taul, Jayla Smith and Connie Hoffman, her advisors, who took her under their wings to help ensure she could reach her goals. Mrs. Stipkovits recalled school being her refuge, a place that was predictable and calm, where she found the routine to be soothing. She emphasized the importance of feeling that one belongs to the community and shared her longing to have a “Rissler Rascal” shirt in third grade and her disappointment when she didn’t get one. The shirt, to her, represented a sense of belonging. “Every kid wants to feel a part,” she said. “It changes how you see yourself. It gives you a sense of security.” Mrs. Stipkovits, who has been a generous supporter of Bright Futures Trenton from her home in Shawnee, KS, told volunteers to understand that their contributions are making a difference, most importantly because they let children know that people care about them and believe in them. “You ARE making a difference,” she said. “What you are doing will change the lives of the children in this

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SOFTBALL BANQUET: Thursday, Nov. 1 - 6:30 p.m. - Trenton High School Commons
THE LONG WAY HOME Trenton’s Title Bid Comes Up Short In The Longest Class 2 State Championship Game Ever
The Class 2 softball state second-place trophy sat just outside the first baseline, placed there by catcher Salem Croy during the medal ceremony following the state championship game on Saturday at the Killian Sports Complex in Springfield. It sat there through the remainder of the medal ceremony, it sat there as Trenton went through one last post-game breakdown in shallow right field, it sat there as players walked past, returning to the dugout to collect their belongings and emotions. There will come a time when that trophy will be a symbol of pride in the trophy case inside the entrance to Trenton High School – a hallmark to one of the greatest sports seasons in the school’s history. But, in the moments after a heart-wrenching 2-1 loss to Bowling Green in a monstrosity of a softball game that needed 11 innings to determine the state’s best, it was nothing more than an unwanted hunk of wood and metal. Trenton didn’t embark on this journey to come home in second place. The Bulldogs also couldn’t help but feel a little slighted after what turned out to be a state-championship altering turn of events in the third inning. With one out in the bottom of the third, Ainsley Tolson, one of five Trenton seniors playing in their final high school softball game ever, reached base with a single. Her classmate Mykah Hurley followed with a double. Tolson scored. The scoreboard said so. Hurley went to third as Bowling Green tried to make sense of what just happened. The Trenton crowd roared its approval. But Bowling Green appealed at third base and the umpires huddled. They ruled Tolson didn’t step on the bag as she rounded for home. The run was erased, the second out was recorded. When the game was tied at 0-0 after the scheduled seven innings were complete, the lost run was the difference in celebrating the program’s first state championship and playing extra innings. “It’s going to be a tough one to swallow because (Bowling Green) didn’t score in seven innings and we thought we had that one run,” Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said. “I think it affected the next play, too, because then you are looking at Mykah being on third with one out instead of two and Maci is up and all she has to do is get it on the ground, which she did. It will be a tough one to live with, for all of us, forever.” Trenton trudged on after the call, but Bowling Green would retire 12 of the next 14 Trenton batters to come to the plate to keep the Bulldogs scoreless through seven. Trenton escaped a jam in the top of the seventh when a runner reached third base with just one out. A heads-up flip to the plate on a short ground ball by Hurley, however, kept Bowling Green off the scoreboard. On and on the teams battled into the night. Inning after inning the defenses shined, sending batter after batter back to the dugout. No Class 2 state championship game had ever lasted as long. In the ninth inning, Bowling Green drew a

leadoff walk. A hit followed and, after a sacrifice bunt, the Bobcats had runners at second and third with one out. When a ball found its way to the backstop, Bowling Green had the first run of the game that counted. When Maci Moore stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, she was already the single-season home run recordholder at Trenton High School. She had hit eight on the season. Her ninth, though, was the biggest of her season, her career and her life. Moore lifted a shot into the night sky that carried the left-field fence with ease. The Bulldogs were again tied. Destiny, it appeared, was on their side. “I think (Moore) is one of the best players in Class 2,” Cowling said. “She has done that time and time again – come up in big spots and had a big hit or a big home run. Even as a freshman she would get those big hits and score runs for us. She is only going to keep getting better. She is just a great kid and a great worker. It’s like
what she did against Brooke Huitt (in sectionals), she battled, she got a pitch that she could drive and she kept us in that game.” But Bowling Green’s dynasty would trump Trenton’s destiny. The Bobcats’ own slugger, Gabrielle Deters, knocked a home run over the right field fence in the top of the 11th. This time, Trenton could not answer. At 7:27 p.m., two hours and 15 minutes after the first pitch was thrown, Trenton’s season was over. Bowling Green celebrated its second-straight state title after the Bobcats defeated Blair Oaks in last year’s title game 6-1. The loss gave Trenton a final record of 27-3 on the season, the 27 wins marking a new school record. Tolson had two hits at the plate to pace Trenton’s offense. Hurley’s double and Moore’s home run were the only other two hits Trenton had in the game. Tolson took the loss in the circle, going the full 11 innings and allowing the two runs on six
hits and five walks while striking out 11. Win or lose, the game was going to be the final softball game in a Trenton uniform for Tolson, Hurley, Croy, Taylor Richman and Sidney Lynch. That group has been a key unit for Trenton for four years now, helping lead the Bulldogs to a 97-13 overall record in that span with three district championships and three Grand River Conference championships. “They are a special group,” Cowling said. “They have left their mark on this program. They weren’t going to let this team die. They weren’t going to let this game end. They kept at it and kept us in the ballgame. They played their hearts out tonight.” SEMIFINAL TRENTON 2, EAST CARTER 0 For five innings, Friday's Class 2 state semifinal softball game in Springfield was agony for the Trenton Bulldogs. Trenton could not score through the first five innings against their semifinal opponent - East Carter. In fact, Trenton only had two base runners through the first five innings and only one hit. A cold windy day had knocked down three potential home runs. But Tolson and the Trenton defense, most of them cloaked in hooded shirts to battle the elements, gamely churned out outs inning after inning to match East Carter. When the Redbirds opened the bottom of the fifth with a single and walk to put two on with no outs, though, the Bulldogs suddenly found themselves in scramble mode. After a pop out to Croy behind the plate, Trenton got exactly the spark it was looking for. A lined shot to short was snared by Moore, who turned and threw to second to double up East Carter and end the threat. When the Trenton defense left the field, there was a renewed energy among the Bulldogs in a game that had grown mundane with a lack of offense and bitter cold temperatures. Moore's play proved to be the antidote for the Trenton offense which plated one run each in the sixth and seventh to pick up a 2-0 victory and advance to the state championship game. "This is a group that feeds off of their energy, feeds off of making big plays, usually on offense," Cowling said. "But, to get a double play to end a situation like that, was a real emotional pick up for us." When Trenton came to the plate in the sixth, Tolson drilled a one-out triple over the East Carter right fielder's head. A runner just 60 feet away from scoring for the first time all day seemed to be the perfect situation for Trenton and it would lead to a run - just not in the way Trenton expected. Hurley laid down a bunt in an attempt to put the pressure on East Carter and Tolson went home. The Redbirds went for the play at the plate, however, throwing Tolson out. With the middle infielders covering the corners on the bunt, Hurley saw second unoccupied and bolted. The East Carter catcher threw down to second anyway and the ball skipped off Hurley's leg and drifted into centerfield. Hurley motored on, rounding third and heading home, to give Trenton the 1-0 edge. See Hurley, Page 3

Hurley’s Mad Dash Breaks Scoreless Tie Continued From Page 2
"When I was in the batter's box all I was thinking was I have to get (the bunt) down because it would force them to make a decision - get me out at first or get Ainsley out at home," Hurley said. "They went home and I saw no one was at second so I went. When it bounced off my leg I was just going, looking at Coach (Cowling) and going home." The wild turn of events made Trenton pretty comfortable as Tolson and the Trenton defense had been locked in all day. That wouldn't change in the sixth or seventh either as Trenton shut East Carter down, retiring six of the last seven to secure the state championship berth. Tolson finished the game, throwing all seven frames and allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight. The Bulldogs tacked on one insurance run in the seventh when McKayla Blackburn roped a ball down the left-field line, scoring Gracyn Rongey, who was running for Richman, who had driven a one-out double to right center earlier in the inning.

Trenton’s Season Ends With District Loss In Macon For a while on Friday night it appeared the Trenton Bulldogs were in contention to spring an upset of the seventhranked team in the state - the Macon Tigers. After striking first, Trenton watched as Macon flexed its muscles, running away with a 55-26 victory - one that ended Trenton’s 2018 campaign with a 3-7 overall record. “We scored first and felt pretty good, but then they just came out and started throwing it (the ball) everywhere, Trenton Head Coach Brandon  Boswell said. “Really, it wasn’t anything too complex. It was just their guys being faster than us and running by our secondary. We just couldn’t seem to stay on top of them. Trenton moved the ball effectively on the game’s first possession, but turned the ball over with a fumble, the first of what would be four on this night. After stopping Macon, Trenton was again on the move. This time Trenton cashed in, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Sam Schilling. “Really our first drive, we were moving the ball on them, Boswell said. “We made them go four-and-out after a couple of big plays and got the ball back and scored. At that point we felt like we were going to be okay, but that was about it after that. We just gave up some big plays and couldn’t catch up. It was a landslide from that point as Macon roared back to take a 20-6 lead by the end of the opening quarter. But the Tigers didn’t stop there. Macon continued to pour it on until the lead stood at 48-6 late in the first half. Trenton was able to find the end zone on a 10-yard pass from Schilling to
Carson Radcliff, but the 48-12 halftime deficit would be too much to overcome. Trailing 55-12 in the fourth quarter, Trenton punched the ball in the end zone twice, getting a 31-yard run by Radcliff and a 23-yard run by Schilling. Matt Sibbit punched in a twopoint run following Schilling’s score, Trenton’s first successful two-point try of the night after failed pass attempts on the first three scores. Despite the loss, Trenton receiver Jaren Whitney continued to have a career year, hauling in seven catches for 148 yards. His game totals pushed his season marks to 33 receptions for 687 yards. The 687 yards are the second highest single season total in Trenton history - only 44 yards shy of the record set by Marti Gooch in 1978 (731). “I though coming into this season, based off the growth he had in the offseason, that Jaren would be a pretty good player, Boswell said. “That really started to show near mid-season when we decided that we needed to be able to throw the ball because people were stacking the box. Obviously Sam’s ability to deliver the ball and our offensive line stepping up in pass protection set Jaren up to be successful. Going into next season I feel like he is going to be a weapon that teams are going to have to prepare for. Trenton finished the night with a respectable 395 yards of total offense. Schilling was nine-of-20 passing for 126 yards and Radcliff led the Bulldogs on the ground, rushing for 77 yards on eight carries. The loss marked the sixth time in the seven years since MSHSAA revamped its district format that Trenton has been dealt a first-round exit.

WMH Is Topic At Rotary Club Wright Memorial Hospital CEO Steve Schieber was the guest speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Dave Bain was the program chairman. Schieber presented information about the hospital, which locally employees 175-plus individuals with an annual payroll of $13.9 million. Among the services offered at Wright Memorial are 3D mammography, mobile x-ray, general surgery, eHealth (telemedicine), a sleep lab and palliative care, a program which Schieber said WMH is piloting for the rest of the Saint Luke’s Health Care System. WMH also offers a hospitalist program along with its newest program, Senior Life Solutions, which targets individuals ages 65 and over who may be suffering from depression and/or anxiety and need both individual and group support. WMH also works in conjunction with Hedrick Medical Center at Chillicothe, which is also part of the Saint Luke’s System. This collaboration allows both hospitals to provide the 58,000-plus residents of the region with the best care possible. Schieber also addressed
physician recruitment, in which the local facility is very active. He said that WMH recently signed a contract with a doctor who will be joining the staff in 2019 and is working with another physician to come to Trenton in 2020. Both have local ties, which Schieber said is important when trying to recruit to a rural area. He showed statistics that indicate that every physician has 100-plus job offers when getting ready to go out and establish their medical practices. He said that the hospital is hoping to add two more family practitioners and/or internists/pediatricians to its staff. He concluded by assuring members that the hospital is not closing, pointing out that Wright Memorial is on financially sound footing. During the business meeting, an update was given on the recent Missouri Day Parade organized by the club as well as the Missouri Day turkey leg sales. It was announced that the Trenton’s Got Talent program is being revived and is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2 at Trenton High School. Members will also be “ringing the bell for the Salvation Army on Friday, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14.

Grundy County Nursing Home Board Holds Meeting October 24 The Grundy County Nursing Home District Board of Directors met on Oct. 24, hearing several reports. According to Sunnyview
Nursing Home and Apartments Administrator Donita Youtsey, the board completed its biannual review for employee benefit options, which is offered to all full-time employees or parttime employees that work at least 1,500 hours annually through the Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement System. The board chose to update the district plan to allow the Rule of 80 when determining the eligibil-
ity age of an employee for retirement (employee age plus years of service equal 80 years). Following discussion with residents, family members and guests, the board made plans to purchase a new oven for the nursing home and to look at requirements that would need to be met to open the kitchen apartments for more meal preparation. Discussion was held regarding ongoing energy
upgrades at the facility, including converting the boiler system to a new HVAC system and window replacement. Mrs. Youtsey presented the administrator’s report and reported on the harvest dinner to be held at 5 p.m. on Nov. 16. An executive session was held to approve closed meeting minutes from September. The next board meeting will be at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the nursing home. republican-times.com republican-times.com

Garden Club Elects Officers Nine members told of their favorite place to view fall foliage when the Town and Country Garden Club met on Oct. 22. Lois Corrigan was hostess. It was voted to retain officers for another year. They are Barb Peterson, president; Martha Maloney, vice president; Judy Meeker, secretary/reporter/treasurer; Tillie Moore, chaplain; and Bev Fields, correspondent. Christmas projects were discussed. Meeting months will be chosen in November when the group meets with Tillie Moore. Mrs. Peterson told of sev-
eral annual vines and how to control the noxious shrub, bush honeysuckle. She said to cut off the bush and spray to kill it or burn every spring for several years. Martha Maloney was hostess when the Town and Country Garden Club had its September meeting. Ten members answered roll call by discussing end of season chores. Tillie Moore read “Gardners Guide to close the business meeting. Carol Cook gave the program on monarch butterflies. Mrs. Maloney showed a quilt she had embroidered and quilted by hand.

tremely awkward. Father's Day came about a month later. It was also my birthday. We discussed doing something together for my birthday and then having dessert with my parents so I could see my dad for a bit. His daughters decided to cook lunch for him at noon, which was fine with me, as we could still be at my parents' place by 3 or 4 in the afternoon for dessert and my birthday cake. When we were with his daughters, the time kept passing, and nothing was said. I finally asked him when we would be going. He told me that no woman would interfere with his relationship with his daughters and that he was not going to tell them that he had plans. I reminded him that we had made an agreement to see my parents. His only response was that his girls will always come first. I also told him they are old enough to understand that we have to share him. He still refused. Is this a red flag, or am I being selfish? His daughters are 22, 38 and 40. I forgot to mention that the youngest daughter left after an hour to
Dear Annie: I've been dating a gentle, kind and loving man for a while. He goes to church, constantly reads his Bible and plays Christian music. We get along great. We have conversations for hours, and we laugh and cry together. But the problem is that he is so close to his three grown daughters, especially his youngest, that I feel completely left out at times. For instance, we recently went out to dinner, and his youngest daughter happened to come into the restaurant. We had not been dating long at that point, and I was used to him looking at me as we sat across from each other. She came in and sat down beside him, and that was the end of our date. He turned in his chair to face her and talked and smiled at her the whole time. His smile was bigger than I had ever seen. It was almost like watching a schoolboy with his new girl. But they had just had lunch together the day before. They have lunch together at least three times a week. He was ignoring me so much, with his attention centered only on her, that it was ex-

spend time with her mom and stepdad and her boyfriend and his dad. -- Are Red Flags Flying High? Dear Red Flags: It sounds as if you two are ships sailing in completely different directions. You began your letter by saying that you are in a relationship with a gentle, kind and loving man, but your stories about him show that his gentle, kind and loving side is reserved for his daughters, especially the youngest, even if it is at your expense. Seeing as he clearly stated that his girls come first and you don't like that -- understandably -- it is probably time to move on. Dear Annie: This is in response to "On My Own in Georgia," who regrets not having children. This woman should check out the schools in her city. There are so many children who could benefit from her knowledge. There are also boys and girls clubs that could use her knowledge and wisdom. My husband and I could not have children, so we adopted a 5-year-old boy from Korea. I would do it again. -No Regrets Dear No Regrets: I'm happy to print this letter, as it's great advice. A 2016 report by the Stanford Center on Longevity found that children and older adults benefit equally and greatly from spending time together.

Industrial weakness Companies that make machinery and heavy equipment took sharp losses Tuesday after reports by Caterpillar, 3M and other major companies concerned investors. Caterpillar, the Deerfield, Illinois-based maker of backhoes, bulldozers and other equipment, topped analysts’ expectations in the third quarter. It didn’t raise its forecasts for the rest of 2018, though. Wall Street took that as a sign Caterpillar is in for a weak fourth quarter, and sent its stock to its worst loss in seven years. Another industrial giant, 3M, also posted disappointing revenue,
as did Peterbilt truck maker Paccar. Investors are worried that the U.S.-China trade dispute will slow the global economy while rising freight and materials costs eat into industrial companies’ profits. Caterpillar raised that possibility in April, when it said it didn’t expect to top its first-quarter profit this year, and those concerns have jolted the U.S. market this month. The S&P 500 industrial index, which comprises 63 companies, has dropped more than 10 percent since Oct. 3 and it’s now down 5 percent for the year. The full S&P 500 has risen about 3 percent.
