Young Golf Team Enters 2019 Season This week marks the beginning of the high school boys golf season for the Trenton Bulldogs. After graduating one of the most decorated golfers in the program’s history last May in Lathan Croy, Trenton will put a very young, very inexperienced team on the links in 2019. Trenton features five players this season, just enough to field a full team. Sophomores Brycin Loyd, Gavin Roeder, Jake McNabb and Patrick Behen are all back from last season with a year of mostly jun2019 Trenton Boys Golf Schedule 4/1 @ Richmond Triangular 4 p.m. 4/2 @ Brookfield 4 p.m. 4/4 @ Darren Floyd Memorial 8 a.m. 4/5 @ Carrolton Quad 4 p.m. 4/8 Trenton Triangular 4 p.m. 4/10 @ Cameron Invitational 8 a.m. 4/16 @ Chillicothe 4 p.m. 4/18 @ Chillicothe Tournament 8 a.m. 4/22 @ GRC Tournament 8 a.m. 4/25 @ Lawson Invitational 8 a.m. 4/26 @ Richmond Tournament 8 a.m. (Home Events In Bold)
ior varsity action under their belts. Junior Juan Garcia is a first-year player who joins the team this year. “We’ve got four sophomores and a junior, Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said. “The junior is a new kid this year - Juan Garcia. He’s coming out brand new and doesn’t have a lot of experience. The other four guys were all out last year, but they are still pretty raw, still have a long ways to go. Having a young and less experienced team is one thing, but not being able to get much work in before the season begins with a young squad is another. The unseasonable weather to start the spring sports season impacted golf teams across the state, but Trenton missed valuable time to get some work in on the course. “They are coming out, they are working, Mullenix said. “We didn’t have a great spring, just like everybody else. We had two weeks indoors, but this last week we are finally getting outside and getting to swing.
NCAA BASKETBALL
Trenton enters the season lacking the sure-bet state qualifier it has had over the past several years. The Bulldogs have lost state qualifiers to graduation in each of the past three seasons with Nate Swann preceeding Croy and Cree Mullenix preceeding Swann. “We are just not very experienced right now, Mullenix said. “We have lost a lot in the last couple of years. But, we are just looking to get better and see what we can do moving forward through the season. That’s our main goal this season - just do some things to get better each day. Trenton kicked off the golf season on Monday with the Richmond Quad. The Bulldogs are on the links again today (Tuesday), traveling to Brookfield for a dual at 4 o’clock. Trenton will be in action on Thursday and Friday as well, competing in the Darren Floyd Memorial Tournament at Tiffany Greens in Kansas City on Thursday before traveling to the Carrollton Quad on Friday.
Final Four
First Time Coaches, Izzo To Final Four By The Associated Press Tom Izzo drew up the perfect play at the perfect moment, sending Michigan State past mighty Duke for a spot in the Final Four. The trip is always emotional, but Izzo has done it before. This will be his eighth Final Four and a chance for a second national championship. The other three Final Four coaches all will be the new kids at the dance. Chris Beard's nomadic journey struck a vein of gold in his 12th coaching stop at Texas Tech, with a gritty pack of ball-hawking players grasping the program's first Final Four. Their opponent next Saturday in Minneapolis: Izzo's Spartans. Virginia's Tony Bennett finally got over the hump in his 10th season with the Cavaliers, putting them in position for a different kind of history after last year's historic first-round flameout against No. 16
UMBC. And Bruce Pearl found some gems at Auburn after an acrimonious split with Tennessee, guiding the Tigers to Minneapolis where they'll face Virginia despite the cloud of a federal investigation hanging over the program. "I'm so happy for the people at Auburn who have been waiting forever to get their first Final Four," Pearl said. Pearl was fired by Tennessee in 2011 and hit with a "show-cause" penalty by the NCAA for a string of violations and lying to investigators. He landed at Auburn 2014 and the dark clouds followed. Tigers assistant Chuck Person pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery and two players, Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy, were ruled ineligible last season as a result of the federal investigation. Just before this year's SEC tournament, assistant coach Ira

Bowman was suspended indefinitely amid bribery allegations during his time at Pennsylvania. Despite the off-court issues, The Tigers (30-9) shot their way into the Final Four for the first time by taking down blue bloods Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky in succession. "No matter how low we got this season, no matter how much adversity went through, we always believed this is where we could get to," said Auburn's Bryce Brown, who had 24 points in the Elite Eight win over Kentucky. Beard was at Division II Angelo State just four years ago, the ABA's South Carolina Warriors three years before that. He took over a middling Texas Tech program in 2016 and turned it around by getting non-five-star players to buy into his defensive philosophies. Texas Tech reached the Elite Eight for the first time in Beard's second season a year ago, but not much was expected from the Red Raiders this season after losing five of their top six scorers. Picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll, Texas Tech

was one of college basketball's biggest surprises, sharing the Big 12 regular-season championship with Kansas State to end Kansas' 14-year reign. After a hiccup against West Virginia in the conference tournament, Texas Tech (30-6) and the nation's most efficient defense shut down four straight NCAA Tournament opponents to reach the program's first Final Four. "It is real. That defense is real," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said after the Red Raiders bounced the Zags from the Elite Eight. So is Virginia's. Using the same principles his father, Dick, ran at Wisconsin and Washington State, Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett runs a "pack line" defense that forces teams to the perimeter. As the name suggests, Virginia packs its defense into the paint, clogging driving lanes, help defenders already in place to fill the gaps in the defense. Bennett needed a few years to cement the foundation of his defensive principles, but once he did, Virginia became one of the nation's top defenses. The Cavaliers led the nation in scoring at 55 points per game this season and are fifth in KenPom's defensive efficiency. Virginia (33-3) shut down its first three opponents and survived an offensive onslaught by Purdue's Carsen Edwards to earn its first Final Four since 1984. "There was a burning desire to get these guys and our program to a Final Four and hopefully beyond," Tony Bennett said.

Sena Arnold Gives Program Sena Arnold presented the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Micah Landes was the program chairman. Miss Arnold is the co-owner, along with her sister, Rachel, of Vintage Vines, a downtown Trenton business which opened last November. She told members that she and her sister, who are natives of Trenton, had always wanted to open an antique/gift shop and that the opportunity presented itself some two years ago when they were able to purchase a building in the downtown area. They chose downtown because of the development potential they believe the area has, which she said was a “community within a community feel. She said they wanted to support local business and used local contractors to do their renovation work, which included both the downstairs area for their business and the upstairs area for a rental apartment. She said she and her sister have been involved with several downtown activities, including the Five Points Alive Group that is raising funds for holiday lighting. They are working with the Main Street program to do a chalk art contest to coincide with a car show and dinner planned in June. During the business meeting, Phil Hoffman gave an update on the grant project the club is doing in conjunction with the Trenton R-9 School District and Bright Futures Trenton. It was announced that the Shoes for Orphan Souls project is under way, with members encouraged to either donate a new pair of shoes or make a monetary donation. The program for Thursday, April 4 will be Karen Otto, administrator of the North 65 Center. Debbie Carman will be the program chairman.

The Capitol Report REP. RUSTY BLACK Room 115 State Capitol Building 201 W. Capitol Avenue Jefferson City, MO 65101 E-mail: rusty.black@house.mo.gov
573-751-2917 BUDGET WORK CONTINUES It has been a busy and productive week at the Capitol. I find serving on the Budget Committee in the house as the most taxing (no pun intended) responsibility I have as your state representative. The Budget Committee met through March 15 while finalizing our recommendations. Two weeks into session we began meeting. At the beginning of week we would have meetings scheduled starting at 1 p.m. on
Mondays through as late as 3 p.m. on Thursdays. Most meetings would last until around 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday’s meeting began at 8:15 a.m. This schedule ended Feb. 18. We began Appropriations Committee mark-up meetings on Feb. 18. The above is not a rant or whining. The Budget Committee chairman will present the budget to the House the week of March 25 and send a finished product
HIGHLIGHTS WITH HEGEMAN 12th District State Sen. Dan Hegeman Room 332, State Capitol Jefferson City, MO 65101 Phone: 573-751-1415 dan.hegeman@senate.mo.gov
TO THE SECOND HALF OF THE SESSION The Missouri General Assembly has passed the mid-point of the 2019 legislative session, which began in January and ends in May. During the first half of session, the Senate discussed and debated dozens of proposed bills, sending many of them to the House of Representatives for its consideration. During the second half of session,
the Senate will consider legislation sent to us by the House, as the House considers legislation sent to it by the Senate. Both bodies will also turn their attention to finalizing the state operating budget for the 2020 fiscal year, which must be passed before the end of session. As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will
to the Senate by March 28. The Senate (Sen. Dan Hegeman, who represents Grundy County) will then make their recommendations by May 3 and the beginning of May we will negotiate a consensus budget by May 10 to send to the governor for his approval. This year I became the chaiman of Education Appropriations. I am the chairman of the first committee to make recommendations concerning House Bill 2 and 3 (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Department of Higher Education). The two budget areas contain over $10 billion of state spending. Many of us may believe that moving money from one area to another would be relatively easy but, realistically, we can reallocate few dollars without actually viserating programs. The Education Appropriations Committee moved approximately $4 million around within the budget. The smallest dollar amount of increase went to the Scholars and Arts Acad-
emy for high school students ($150,000), we made several people happy with this relatively moderate increase. We also increased spending in an area by $1.5 million and was told on Monday, Feb. 25 that group did not really see it enough to matter. Everything is relative. Many of us have strong opinions concerning our spending and taxing. I will still not be an expert, even if I am fortunate enough to serve you and serve on the Budget Committee for a full eight years. I am confident at the end of the eight years I will know more about state government than I would have had I had NOT served on the committee. All of us realize in our homes, businesses or organizations that if you follow the money, you will certainly learn the priorities of the organizations. I also like to remind people we all waste money. I will find your waste if you let me study your checkbook. No, I won’t let you find my waste, either.
be heavily involved in this important process. A few items that are expected to come up for debate between now and May include education reform and transportation funding. Lawmakers are considering measures to enhance Missourians’ educational opportunities at every level, from K-12 schools to workforce development programs. Additionally, members of the Legislature are seeking short-term solutions to address immediate infrastructure needs while exploring ways to ensure long-term sustainability for our state’s highways, bridges and other transportation systems. The second half of session is when everything starts to come together and the General As-
sembly begins sending truly agreed and finally passed bills to the governor’s desk. It’s when we see the pay-off for all the work we’ve put in throughout the year. There’s still much to be done in the remaining weeks of session, and I am looking forward to doing what I can to make government more effective and efficient for the people of Missouri. As always, please feel free to call, email or write with your ideas or concerns. My capitol office number is 573-751-1415, my email address is dan.hegeman@senate.mo.gov and my mailing address is Room 332, State Capitol Building, Jefferson City, MO 65101.

NICK MCHARGUE Candidate for Mayor
The most important thing facing the citizens of Trenton right now is
THE COST OF UTILITIES.
1.) I have experience with the city staff and city budget that will enable me to provide the citizens with quality service and reasonable taxes. 2.) I have asked for a reduction in utility rates and will continue to ask for more reasonable utility rates. (I think a $3,000,000 profit in utilities is hurting Trenton and its citizens.) 3.) The City of Trenton needs to use the $11,000,000 in reserves to reduce taxes and utility rates. This is just good common sense business.
Please vote for me, Nick McHargue Paid for by Nick McHargue.

COMMUNITY Shirley Brinnen Hosts Meeting The Willing Workers Club of Humphreys met on Thursday, March 21 at the North 65 Center with Shirley Brinnen as hostess. Judith Urich gave the blessing before the meal. The table was decorated with baskets of pansies brought by Mrs. Urich.
Cards were sent and the club voted to give a donation to Tony Grindstaff for medical expenses. Galatians 1 was studied. Those attending were Mrs. Brinnen, Judy Gender, Judy Meeker, Mrs. Urich, Frances Neff and Carol Cook.
Sandy McGinnis Leads Discussion Eight members of the Shakespearean Circle met on Wednesday, March 20, at the Family Activity Center of the First Christian Church. President Susan Engelman presided at the meeting. Roll call was answered with each member answering by giving a quote from Act II of the play being studied. Mrs. Engelman discussed bylaws regarding election of officers, with members asking her to bring a proposal for changes to the next meeting. The slate of officers was decided upon and will be voted on at a later date.
Sandy McGinnis was the leader of Act II, referring to it as "the sneak in the trunk" deceptively left in the bedchamber of Imogen. She gave a synopsis of each scene, then led the discussion of questions following the viewing of the video of Act II. Questions were selected for Act III, which will be the focus of the April 3 meeting. Members in attendance were: Sarah Dannar, Susan Engelman, Krista Rikherson, Amy White, Mary Jane Smith, Terry Cobb, Sandy McGinnis and Carol Reger.
One-Room Schools Are Topic A program on Grundy County one-room schools was presented by Carolyn Brown and Allene Maloney when the Grundy County Genealogy Society met on Monday, March 25 at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library. There were 11 members present. Mrs. Brown and Miss Maloney shared their experiences in attending a one-room school and Mrs. Brown told of her experiences in teaching there as well. The first public school in Grundy County was established sometime between 1835 and 1836, located one mile north of Edinburg near the Thompson family home. Louisa Peery was the teacher. In 1838, an Englishman named Moore taught in Trenton and another early teacher was James Carson, who received a $15 per month salary to teach. Trenton was the first school district organized in Grundy County in June 1840. By 1850,
each township had at least one school and school board. In 1866, Professor R.C. Norton was elected the first county school superintendent. State laws governing rural public schools were changed in 1875, ending township control by giving each district full charge over its own school affairs. In 1853, according to the commissioner’s record, a total of 1,781 children attended schools in Grundy County. Five years later, that number was 3,255 and in 1881 there were 5,155 children attending school. It was recorded that there were 96 schools for white students and one school for black students. In 1905, a state law compelled every school-age child between the ages of eight and 14 to attend school for at least half of term. The next meeting of the genealogy society will be at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 29 at the library. The meetings are open to the public.

A-PLUS PROGRAM As we near the end of the school year, our seniors and their parents anxiously anticipate the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication. But walking across the stage and receiving that diploma is just the beginning of a new and exciting chapter of life. Our students go on to a wide variety of pursuits after high school, and most of those plans have a price tag. For many of our students those post-secondary plans include attending a Missouri community college or technical school. Fortunately, Trenton High School students have a great option for helping them pay for these programs. A-Plus is a scholarship established by the state of Missouri to pay the tuition of qualifying Missouri students who attend a Missouri community college or technical school full time. To qualify, students must be a U.S. citizen, sign an A-Plus agreement with their participating high school, attend an A-Plus certified high school for at least three years immediately prior to grad-

uation, maintain 95 percent attendance, a minimum 2.5 GPA and have a record of good citizenship throughout their high school career. Students must also complete 50 hours of unpaid tutoring and score at least “Proficient on the Algebra I Endof-Course Exam or score a 17 on the Math subsection of the ACT. Students who are able to meet these requirements will graduate from their high school as A-Plus certified students. No matter what year of high school a student is in, there is something he or she can do to ensure A-Plus scholarship funds remain a viable option. First, students need to make sure they come to school since attendance is one of the top reasons students fail to qualify for A-Plus. Freshmen and their parents need to sign and return the APlus consent form to officially enroll in the program. Sophomores need to take Algebra I and score “Proficient or “Advanced on the state End of Course exam. Juniors need to make sure they sign up to be-

come cadet teachers, which is the route most of our students take to serve their 50 tutoring hours. Seniors need to complete applications for a Missouri community college or technical school like North Central Missouri College, complete the FAFSA to see if they are eligible for any other Federal student aid and enroll in a minimum of 12 hours of courses. And students at all levels need to earn C’s or better in their classes throughout high school. Once at college, students need to maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA to continue their A-Plus eligibility. A-Plus will continue to reimburse students for tuition until either they receive an associate’s degree or they have completed 105 percent of hours required for the program in which they are currently enrolled. Students who have other plans immediately following graduation may still receive A+ reimbursement if they enroll in an approved program at a Missouri community college or technical school within 48 months of graduation. No matter what your graduation plans are, acquiring A-Plus eligibility is an opportunity that is definitely worth the effort. If you have questions about the A-Plus scholarship program or about your student’s eligibility please call me at the high school office at 359-2291.

Dear Annie: I care for my brother-in-law, "Steve," but both he and his wife, "Tracy," are a tad egotistical -- your classic know-it-all types, the kind of people most can handle only in small doses. Here's some back story before I get to the matter at hand: My husband and I didn't always plan on having kids. Honestly, our son was a surprise. Steve and Tracy always planned on having children. My mother-in-law, having three sons and always wanting a girl, was hopeful for a granddaughter one day. Steve also strongly wanted a girl. Shortly before our son was born, my husband got a promotion and job offer, which resulted in our moving from Connecticut to Washington state. Although it was best for us financially, it's been hard being away from our family members, who rarely get to see our son. About a year ago, my mother-in-law posted a picture of Steve and his little girl on Facebook. A relative commented on how awesome it is that she became a grandmother twice in one year. Steve, knowing that I would most

Amazon’s profit drive In just the last month, Amazon has introduced a way for shoppers to have all their orders delivered in one day while also announcing that it will close all its pop-up stores in malls. Why? Analysts at KeyBanc Capital Markets think the moves are a way to cut costs and improve the online shopping giant’s profits. The company, which delivered razor-thin profits for years, is now posting billion-dollar profits thanks to its fast-growing cloud

likely see this, commented, "She's going to like our kid better, though." I tried not to take it too seriously at first, saying something along the lines of "Hey, that's not nice!" He responded, "It's just a nice change after so many boys all these years." The more I've thought about it the more annoyed I've became. Whether he was joking or not, I think it was a completely unnecessary and rude thing to say. And truthfully, I don't believe it was a joke. Steve was not a fan of the idea of our moving so far away, so I'm sure that was a factor in the comment he made. Regardless, we're talking about a child, and I think it was a lousy thing to say. I'll admit that I'm very sensitive and I have trouble letting things go. My issue is now that we live across the country and we don't get to visit home that often, our time with people is limited and precious. I personally have no desire to see Steve and Tracy. I would never stop my husband from seeing them, but I want no part of it. Should I say something now or let it go? -- Hurt in the

PNW Dear Hurt: I'd tell you to try to let it go -- to realize that his attitude is his own problem, to make peace with his pettiness and move on, satisfied with the knowledge that you're in the right -- but the fact is you're going to be thinking about this. If it's already stayed under your skin for a year, it's likely to be lodged there for the rest of your life, so I think it would be well worth trying to talk it out. Enlist your husband as an intermediary. Try to begin from a place of understanding and common ground: "I know you probably meant this as a joke, but it really hurt my feelings." Open up a dialogue about how it's hard for you to be so far away and how the distance is something you don't take lightly. If Steve and Tracy are as egotistical as you say, it may not be enough to bring them back down to earth -- but I have a feeling you'll feel better for having tried.
