Editor’s Note: For the past few weeks columnist Ken Bradbury has shared his thoughts in his fight against cancer. Ken (aka Freida Marie Crump) defied the odds to become a cancer survivor a year ago. He is sharing his journey on a website called Caring Bridge where you can get updates: www.caringbridge.org/visit.kenbradbury. Two of his entries are reprinted below, dated a month apart, one as he prepared for new surgery and then this past week upon his return home. Caring Bridge Journal entry, Oct. 18:

A touch from God It’s hard to sneak into our church, at least if you park in the back. It may be difficult to explain without a map but if you enter our fellowship hall from the back parking lot then you end up in the sanctuary right between the pulpit and the piano ...or, as my mom used to say, “...right in front of God and everybody.” But that doesn’t bother Maxine. Maxine is one of the true matriarchs of our church -- short in stature but tall in our esteem. After decades of helping our congregation make its way through bazaars, holidays, conferences, funerals, weddings, and strange ministers Maxine has earned the right to walk into church any darned time she pleases. We’re just glad to have her. But in my book, out of all Maxine’s wonderful gifts of love, it’s her touch that sets her apart. Church starts at 9:45 a.m. and I begin the prelude. At 9:50 the front door to the sanctuary opens and Maxine comes bustling through after planting a load of fresh fruit on the back room counter. But... and here’s where the holy magic happens... as she hurries by me she smiles and puts a hand on my shoulder. That’s all. And that’s all it takes to put me in the right frame of mind to worship ...just Maxine’s hand on my shoulder. It is no exaggeration, no fantasizing overstatement to say that God puts His hand on me every time we begin a service that way. This is no Harry Potter hokeypokey, this is real. Truth be known, when I look out at the congregation and see Maxine in her usual seat before the service begins I’m sort of disappointed that she’s on time. So many times in the past year it has been the small acts of God that have made the largest impression. My sister in law Nancy blew me away on a regular basis with her HUGE acts of God as I went through last year’s chemo and radiation, but it was her little acts... like decorating my house with containers of Purell that come most readily to mind. Every week or so a little hand-painted rock would appear on my front porch with a single word ...Hope, Love, or Faith. My newspaper delivery guy has somehow figured out that I leave the house on Wednesdays at 6 a.m. in order to attend our men’s prayer group. Now, the paper comes before six on one day of the week: Wednesday. I was eating dinner at Mulligan’s one of Jacksonville’s little nook restaurants. When I went to pay the waiter said, “The chef paid for your meal.” So... thank God for the biggies -- Red Seas parted, Goliaths slain, worlds created and pharaohs plagued by locusts. But while I’m waiting for my biggie I’ll cherish those little acts of God. I cherish Maxine’s hand on my shoulder. Caring Bridge Journal entry, Nov. 8:

Okay, let’s try this again I’m home. I suppose that in itself is the news most worth note and I agree. The purpose of the surgery was to insert a rod through my femur and attach it somewhere to keep the bone from breaking by the onset of cancer. Then we dive into radiation and chemotherapy, so I guess you would call this Round One. Can I be honest? I’m tired. Just tired of it. I hope that we can knock this thing out of the ring in two or three. I’m on a walker (a must) and I can eat what I please. I take an unholy amount drugs during a day’s time, and I’m basically living out the effects of surgery. I can only walk a bit without getting winded and my left leg decides what it wants to do no matter what I’ve decided. It’s humbling to be outvoted by one of your limbs. Thanks to brother Keith for posting the occasional report while also doing the same for his wife, Nancy. Who knew a banker could write? As was the case pre-surgery, I’m being waiting upon like a spoiled Mideast Sultan. Since I can’t bend over, the region below my knees now belongs to others. Next week I’ll visit my oncologist and perhaps draw up plans for radiation. He said he’d give me a week to heal then see where to go next. With this sort of definite, determined planning how could I possibly lose? I’m home. Thanks for waiting. Thanks for praying. Thanks for being who you are to me no matter who you are to me. Caring Bridge Journal entry, Nov 10:

It only hurts when you ...uh ...are At first it was like script from an episode of The Andy Griffith show. I woke to the sound of birds outside my window, then heard their tiny scratching to crawl through my east bay. The world seemed to be calling, “Kenny! Kenny! Come out and play!” So, first the right toe, then the left ooze into the welcoming carpet, each toe grabbing a bit of the soft cloth for comfort. One step... beautiful; two steps ...joy fills the room as I experience the first progress in weeks! One step, step, then POW! BANG! ZAP! An errant twist of the hip sends bolts of acidic terror down my left leg which then makes a return trip to my waistline before the first scream could escape my throat. The work of God’s greatest most loving creation had been destroyed in a moment of distraction. Sharp, thread-like slivers of disappointment filled my room. There’s another way to write this, I suppose. “Ken’s muscles had relaxed after a full eight hours of sleep. So when he awoke much of his pain medicine had dissipated, but when he stepped out of bed he screwed up royally by moving his left leg laterally, pretty much destroying any healing from the previous day’s progress.’’ Sometimes a single incident can stand symbol of a much larger experience and that’s happened yesterday morn. Sometimes I wonder. If I’m taking two steps backward for every one forward, shouldn’t I soon be bumping into brick wall? That’s it in short. Not much progress that I can see but today a visiting nurse said that it was too big a surgery to heal quickly. I would love to go painless a day before I forget the feeling. Among the other discouragements and flatulations, I’ve been painfully reminded the cancer hurts. Sometimes it will go days at a gentle grumble and some days will scream. Lately it’s been a real scream. Continued on page 10

Caring Bridge Journal entry by Nancy & Keith Bradbury, Nov 12: Two steps back Not sure we ever had the one step forward this time but we just had the two steps back. Ken had an appointment with Dr. Fararro (sp) to begin radiation treatments today. The good doctor (and he is indeed one of the good ones) said he needs to go to ER first. Went to ER (Memorial) and they determined he has pneumonia and must be admitted. So that is where we are (and have been since 11:30 AM.) Still waiting to be admitted. It is now 3:45. We don’t know if this is an extended stay or just a quick one. We do know this. He is not well enough to go home and I don’t plan to let them boot him so quick this time. And if they give me any crap, I will tell Nancy. Then they will be sorry.

Caring Bridge Journal entry by Keith Bradbury 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 After 9.5 hours in ER waiting for a regular room, Ken was in it for 30 minutes (not faulting the hospital here -- if there is no room available, there is no room available). As soon as he got to the regular room, lights started flashing, beepers beeping and suddenly there were 14 people in his room (I counted them), all working very fast. Within minute he was transferred to ICU. Lots of hoses. Lots of pumps. Lots of noise and scurrying. It was not a good situation. It was a rough night. Against my wishes Nancy slept in a recliner in his room. I slept in the waiting room where several other families were camped (including a gas passer, a snorer with a CPAP and a guy who had a ring tone for messages that was Harry Carey’s voice saying “Holy Cow”). Morning dawns a new day. Ken is better. Still on oxygen and a dozen other pumps of some sort including four antibiotics. Infection will be treated first, then pneumonia, then cancer. So, we are still several day off from radiation and oncologist says chemo may be put off a couple of months. Nancy has been verbally scolded by me and a nurse practitioner and sent home to rest away from germs. Ken is in a good place, being cared for by good people. More when I know it.
