ABSENTEE VOTING FAQ Q: Are all Absentee ballots counted at each election? A: Yes, every absentee ballot is counted at every election. There is a strict procedure set by statute that requires my office to account for each ballot printed – how many are sent to voters, how many are returned, how many were damaged and had to be hand counted, etc. The machine tapes on election night must balance exactly to the Certification of Ballots that reconciles how each ballot was used. Q: Are Absentee ballots only counted if there is a tie? A: Absolutely not. Each and every Absentee ballot is counted at each and every election. Q: Is my Absentee ballot vote kept confidential? A: Yes, Absentee ballots are held in a locked and sealed box until opened by a sworn bipartisan team of election judges on Election Day. A strict procedure is followed which prohibits any one person from knowing both the name on the ballot return envelope and how the ballot is voted. Q: Can I vote Absentee at every election? A: Yes, many people are eligible to vote Absentee by mail and/or in person at the courthouse. If you are going to be away from your home whether at work, on vacation, or away on business; or if you are working as an election worker you may vote Absentee. For these reasons you must have your mail in ballot envelope notarized before mailing. If you vote in person with these reasons your ballot return envelope will be certified at the time you vote by one of the election authorities. You may also vote Absentee by mail if you are elderly, incapacitated, or confined due to illness or injury. This reason does not require a notarized signature on the ballot return envelope. You simply put the postage paid envelope back in the mail. A caregiver of a person that is eligible under this reason is also allowed to vote in this manner. Q: How is voting by Absentee ballot at the upcoming June 2nd election different from a typical election? A: Due to the Governor's stay-at-home order, and continuing recommendations to avoid gatherings of people, voters are allowed to choose the “Confined due to illness” reason for voting Absentee. This allows any voter to request and be sent a mailed Absentee ballot, and also allows the ballot envelope to be returned without being notarized. Q: If I want to vote in person at this upcoming June 2nd election what are my options? A: You may vote in person at the courthouse anytime between 8:00 am until 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday until 5:00 pm on Monday, June 1st. In person voting will also be th available Saturday, May 30 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon at the courthouse East door. You may also vote in person on Election Day at the Central Polling Location in Gallatin, MO at the Lions Club Building, 801 West Grand Street. Q: Can I vote for county offices at this June 2nd election? A: No, county offices such as Assessor, Sheriff, Collector, etc will be voted for on August 4th. This election on June 2nd is for school boards, fire districts, city alderman, village trustees, levies, etc. Q: Does every voter in the county have something to vote on in this June 2nd election? A: No, many voters this election have nothing they are eligible to vote on. Many entities this time had an equal number of candidates for their available positions, and published their election notices properly, so they qualified by statute to have a “Non-Election”. By the Governor's order which postponed the April 7th election to June 2nd these candidates th were duly elected as of April 7 and have now been sworn in to their new positions. Q: Will there be only a Central Polling Location for the August 4th election? A: At this time my plan is to have all voting locations open for both the August Primary and the November General elections. That could change by Governor's order but my hope is that we are back to a more normal situation by August. If you have any additional questions or concerns about elections in general, or the Absentee voting process, please give me a call and I would be happy to discuss it with you.
