Greetings from Poosey. So, I have this friend named Ellen whose name is not Ellen. But she reads this column so I’ll call her Ellen. She’s the most perverse person I know. No matter what position I take on something, Ellen will maintain the opposite opinion. I used to think she was playing some sort of strange game with me but lately I’ve come to the conclusion that she’s just plain obstinate. She doesn’t drink coffee. She once told me that there would be no coffee in heaven. I politely informed my friend that it could not possibly be heaven without coffee. Ellen is just perverse. We once sat down together to eat lunch at a summer camp where macaroni and cheese was the main course. She stopped eating, looked at me, and said, “What are you doing?” I told her that I was putting ketchup on my mac and cheese. She said, “You’re kidding.” I told her I wasn’t. Back when I was in high school the cooks even put ketchup on the table when mac and cheese day rolled around. Heck, everybody did it. Ellen thought it was disgusting. But remember, Ellen is perverse. We often end up in the same church service and Ellen favors the more modern type of service where the congregation sings by watching the words projected on a screen in the front of the sanctuary. She tells me this is an improvement over the traditional hymn books because it gets people’s noses up out of the book and pointed toward God. I tell her that I’ve never really had a desire to point my nose toward God. Besides that, I like the feel of a hymn book. I mean, otherwise, what do you do with your hands? She says I should raise them in the air. I tell her that would make my arms tired and besides that, I’m Presbyterian and they’d probably call a doctor if I spent the entire service with my hands in the air. She tells me that computer generated hymns are cheaper than hymnals. I tell her that you can’t follow the musical line with only words instead of notes. She disagrees, but what would you expect from someone so perverse? Once upon a time Ellen and I shared a hotel room while we were attending a conference. The meeting was held in mid-January so a bit of heat was a necessity in our room. We nearly came to blows. Ellen insisted on firing up the thermostat to egg-poaching temperatures while I cannot sleep unless my bedroom is cold. I told Ellen to have her way and kick it up as high as she liked then as soon as she started snoring I got up and turned the dial back down to more arctic levels. 1st & 3rd It’s Saturdays aAuctions minor thing, but Nov.-March Ellen puts salt on her watermelon. I find that revolting. Why not just eat popcorn?
Ellen reads three sections of any newspaper: the comics, the sports page, and the horoscopes. I skip all three and read only the news. Sometimes Ellen reads my horoscope aloud to me and I’m forced to throw things at her.

She says that real chili doesn’t contain beans. I tell her this is ridiculous and I have indisputable proof: my mother put beans in her chili and Mom wasn’t perverse. I put ranch dressing on my salad and Ellen eats hers naked. I mean, you know, she’s fully dressed but she puts nothing on his lettuce and tomatoes. She swallows them bare. I like my ice cream au naturale, without any toppings to cover up the taste of the actual thing. Ellen loads hers with nuts and syrups and potions to the point where she can’t even tell what flavor of ice cream she’s eating. We can’t even eat hotdogs together as Ellen insists on using ketchup while every red-blooded American knows that wieners are not happy unless slathered with mustard. With Ellen, perversity knows no limits. But it’s the strangest thing ...Ellen is my best friend. I’d do anything for her and she’d gladly step in front of a speeding grocery cart for me.
