Health & Wellness How exercise benefits your heart Improved health is a primary motivator among people who routinely exercise. Exercise can help people feel better about themselves and their appearance, and it has considerable effects on various parts of the body, including the heart. Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of both men and women in the United States. Exercise can be one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk for cardiovascular issues like heart attack, high cholesterol and more. In fact, cardiologists at the New England Baptist Hospital say exercise is not only a risk preventative, but also a healing balm of sorts for heart health. Exercise can help the heart become more efficient and

more capable of pumping blood throughout the body, says the health experts behind Kaiser Permanente health plans. Even light to moderate exercise can be highly effective at improving heart health. Harvard Medical School says exercise also promotes positive physiological changes, such as encouraging the heart’s arteries to dilate more readily. Exercise also can help with the body’s sympathetic nervous system (which controls heart rate and blood pressure) to be less reactive. Ischemic preconditioning is another way that exercise can potentially benefit the heart. According to a 2017 article in JAMA Cardiology, heart disease patients

who exercised found that exercise could trigger short periods of ischemia, or reduced blood flow to the heart. After resting for a few minutes, these people saw improved performance when they renewed exercise and got their heart rates up. It is believed that small doses of IPC can help the heart adapt more readily with ischemia and avoid a major response issue down the road. Those at the Cardiovascular Performance Program at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital found that IPC could reduce damage from heart attack by as much as 50 percent. Physical activity also allows better blood flow in the small blood vessels around the heart, potentially preventing

clogs that can lead to heart attacks. Furthermore, there is some evidence that exercise can help the body grow more blood vessel branches so there are additional routes blood can take if a usual path is blocked by fatty deposits or narrow arteries. Johns Hopkins Medical Center says exercise also works like a beta-blocker medication that can slow the heart rate naturally to alleviate hypertension. It also can raise levels of HDL, the good cholesterol in the body, helping to improve overall cholesterol levels. There are several reasons why exercise is important to heart health. It’s never too late to get with a fitness regimen to prevent or reverse cardiac episodes.

You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other vaping devices) to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Vaping’s sudden rise in popularity means that we haven’t been able to fully study the long-term effects of frequent use. What we have seen is a direct link between frequent vaping and lung disease, brain development, and other respiratory issues, as well as the emergence of a new

permanent lung condition known as EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product useassociated lung injury) that has caused several deaths across the nation. We eventually expect to see long-term effects like those created by cigarettes. When they were first introduced into the market, ecigarettes and vape pens and liquid were thought of as a harmless alternative to smoking. The problem is vapers are not just ingesting a ‘ harmless water vapor.’ Vape juice can contain toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde (the stuff they use on dead bodies), acetone (paint thinner), and diacetyl (a common chemical used to give foods a buttery flavor causes a condition

called “popcorn lung” when inhaled). Flavorings that may be safe to eat aren’t safe to breathe. Your stomach can break them down, your lungs can’t. When a vape liquid super heats, small amounts of heavy metals can be mixed into the vapor such as lead, nickel, tin, and manganese. These heavy metals embed themselves in your lungs and wreak havoc on your body’s cells, causing them to malfunction, and destroying them from the inside. The Centers for Disease Control recommends adult

smokers who are attempting to quit should use evidence-based treatments, including counseling and Food and Drug Administration-approved medications. If someone needs help quitting tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, contact your doctor or other medical provider or call the Missouri Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1800-784-8669). Worksite wellness programs are on the rise. Many companies who have seen the benefits of improved employee health now set worksite wellness as a priority. You may think that getting one started in your business would be hard, and expensive, but that’s not true. Some of the easiest things to implement would not cost an extra cent— it just requires little adjustments here and there to get it started. Some easy ideas for getting started are: • allow employees to leave the facility on their breaks so that they can take a walk • post health related materials in the employee break room • have wellness/health challenges for employees • provide healthy food options at any business meetings/events that you would normally provide food • get rid of vending machines and provide fresh fruit that employees can purchase instead • have walking or standing meetings instead of sitting • investigate what wellness programs/services your insurance carrier could provide for staff • see if your insurance carrier would offer discounts on employee insurance premiums if you had a worksite wellness program you can use some of the money you save to invest in your program
