Greetings from Poosey. As so often happens in our American experience, Mark Twain explains it well. He writes of an experiment he had conducted when he had heard that man is the “reasoning animal,” but in Twain’s own observations he found mankind to be incurably foolish. Twain said that he took a cat and a dog then spent an hour teaching them to be friends. He then put them in a cage and added a rabbit. Over the next two days he was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. He said, “They lived together in peace; even affectionately.”

Then Twain bought another cage and I’ll let him tell what happened. “I confined an Irish Catholic from Tipperary, and as soon as he seemed tame, I added a Scotch Presbyterian from Aberdeen. Next a Turk from Constantinople; a Greek Christian from Crete; an Armenian; a Methodist from the wilds of Arkansas; a Buddhist from China; a Brahman from Benares; and finally, a Salvation Army Colonel from Wapping.” He stayed away for two whole days and when he returned he noticed that the cage of “higher animals,” was alright, but in the other there were “signs of a chaos of gory odds and ends of turbans and fezzes and plaids and bones and flesh -- not a specimen left alive.” He concluded that these so-called reasoning animals had disagreed on a theological detail and “carried the matter to a high court.” Mark Twain maintained that as the world got more complicated, the asset of tolerance was to be more and more highly prized ...the simple act of respecting the life and opinions of others. In one of his lectures, he spoke on things that were omitted from the Holy Scriptures but should have been included. Among those was, “Ye shall be indifferent as to what your neighbor’s religion is. Not merely tolerant of it, but indifferent to it.” And, of course, he was speaking of much more than religion when he made this plea for tolerance among the human race. The great writer from Hannibal went on to say that “travel is fatal to prejudice,” that actually meeting and getting to know our fellow inhabitants of this earth was the road to peace. In fact, sometimes Twain got a bit hostile on the subject: “You never saw a bigoted, opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place since he was born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for his especial comfort and satisfaction.” Whew! I think that Mark wanted us to get out and learn what the rest of the world is like. I think he wanted us to be tolerant. There’s an old story about a little boy who was afraid of the dark because he was afraid of monsters in his bedroom. But alas, there came the day when he was no longer allowed to sleep with the light on. The first night he was paralyzed with fear. In fact, he was so afraid that he crept over to his closet to get a flashlight. But when he opened the closet door he came face to face with a monster, and he let out the loudest scream in the world. The monster took a step backwards, grabbed his multi-colored hair and started crying. The monster cried for so long that the boy’s fear calmed down to almost nothing. He tried to comfort the monster and asked him why he was crying. The monster told him that he lived in the closet but he was afraid to come out because he was afraid of the boy. He said that the boy’s face was the most horrible thing he had ever seen, and the boy told the monster that he felt the same way about his new friend’s face. The two traveled the world together and made friends with lions, tigers, and dragons... it was the first time they had seen such creatures, but once they got to know them, they were no longer afraid. Not only are many of us unwilling to walk a mile in another man’s shoes, we’re afraid to even look at his feet, and thus we have created this awful mess of legislators who won’t compromise, pundits who would destroy the constitution in order to weaken their opponents, the suicidal philosophy that our nation/state/city/family must be first over all others. We are in Mark Twain’s cage of creatures and his experiment is once again coming true. I have friends who express opinions that grate on me like verbal sandpaper, and I no doubt have the same effect on them. But dog gone it, we’re in this together. Tolerance. Dear God, tolerance. You ever ‘round Poosey, stop by. We may not answer the door but you’ll enjoy the trip.
