Greetings from Poosey. I had just settled down for a long winter’s nap when I heard it. Ding! Ding! Ding! Clank! Although it’s a sound I’ve been hearing ever since our marriage, it still raises my hackles and sends spikes of irritation up and down my spine. Is it too much to ask a man to take the change out of his pockets before he throws his pants into the washer? Is this a great imposition on his busy day of drinking coffee and couch napping? Herb’s one of those “change hoarders.” When buying something he never thinks to reach in his pocket for change, choosing instead to use paper bills for everything as the metal builds up in his pocket. If he didn’t wear suspenders he’d loose his drawers and the store clerk would lose her composure. I thought of all this when I attended a meeting of our local NAG (National Aging Group). Our president opened the meeting with the question, “Is cash dead?” She went on to read about a coffee shop in Oregon that no longer accepts cash and then went on to read a list of national chains that are considering going to electronic payments only. Many banks in Sweden no longer have cash on hand; 92% of American adults will have made a digital payment this year. It put me to mind of a little excursion I took over Christmas. Some nephews were visiting for the holidays and our little tribe spent a day nosing around the local mall, piddling through a few coffee shops and generally bonding in the good old American way... buying things. My soul mate for the day was a young man named Cory, tall and deliberate, tech savvy in every way, and seemingly the very model of what our nation is becoming. When he bought our coffee he simply flashed his phone, he paid for our parking electronically, one swish of his device bought us lunch. Not once did Cory bring a coin or bill out of his pocket or even so much as display a credit card. I asked him if he carried cash at all. He said, “Oh, sometimes. Sometimes I’ll run into someone who only takes cash.” His tone seemed to be describing someone who still used an outdoor privy. Visa offered restaurants $10,000 if they’d switch to non-cash. Guess who’ll win on that deal. Many toll roads in the U.S. now feature fast lanes for those with the proper digital tag while the old-timers paying in cash must pull to the right and wait in line. I’ve always promised myself that I’d never become one of those stick-inthe-mud naysayers who immediately rise up against any new idea. I still have a memory of old farmers who believed that unhooking a horse from the plow to be replaced by a tractor was sacrilege, but I wonder if maybe we’re rushing into this. According to the FDIC, nearly 16 million American adults don’t have a bank to use. What happens when the Mom and Pop shops are forced to give up five percent of their profit to credit card companies? How can you tip your waitress and make sure that she gets it? Will the homeless guy on the street have a card reader? The proponents of a cashless society claim that digital payment and banking is safer, more efficient, saves thousands of dollars in transferring money from one place to another, and saves time. Perhaps they’ve never stood with me behind a well-healed lady who swipes her card, swipes it again, waits for the next screen to come up, pokes in whether she wants cash back (why would she want cash if she’s using plastic?), confirming 2 amount display that the is correct, then fingering in her private banking number. tables And between each phase of this “streamlined” process we all wait for the little machine to okay the next move. Sorry, but I can stand in the next line, hand the checker a twenty, get change back and be in my car while Digital Doris is still poking in numbers. The newest development in this headlong rush to a society without cash is called the biometric ID, whereby the machine will scan your fingers or eyes or even your heartbeat signature. Of course, the digital money revolution won’t solve the problem of Herb leaving the change in his pockets unless I stuff him in the dryer for a couple of revolutions of his own. You ever ‘round Poosey, stop by. We may not answer the door but you’ll enjoy the trip.
