Vaccines Help the Body Build Up Its Own Natural Immunity by Kristie Smith, MSN, RN Daviess Co. Health Dept. You may be tired of hearing how vaccines are safe, definitely safer than getting the actual diseases, but it’s true. And if you are one of those parents that are holding off getting your child vaccinated because of what you’ve heard on social media, please keep in mind who is giving you advice and PLEASE do your own research. Just to give you some quick info on why vaccines are the best choice, we need to remember: 1.Vaccines are safer than the actual disease. We don’t go through the rigorous process of getting a vaccine approved unless the disease can cause life threatening complications or long-term disabilities. For instance, “ measles infection causes encephalitis (infection or swelling of the brain) for 1 in 1,000 in-

fected individuals and kills two of every 1,000 infected individuals. Research also shows that measles infection can damage the immune system, leaving children vulnerable to other diseases for as long as three years. In contrast, the risk of encephalitis as a result of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is 1 in 1,000,000” (Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition, http://www.immunizeforgood.com/fact-or-fiction/ natural-immunity). 2.Vaccines are just as “ natural” as getting the actual disease since both cause the body to build up its OWN IMMUNITY. You just don’t have as much of a risk of getting really, really ill with the vaccine, whereas with the actual disease it’s a definite concern. Also, vaccines are more natural than having to take chemical-laden antibiotics, over-the-counter

fever reducing medication, cough syrups, etc. for days or weeks at a time when coming down with the actual disease.

“Vaccines are safer than the actual disease.” 3.Many of the diseases and viruses we prevent with vaccines don’t have a really effective way to treat them once you come down with the actual illness. Take pertussis (whooping cough) for ex ample. Pertussis is one of those diseases that can quickly cause a young child to not be able to breathe. Even if they are in the hospital, many of the interventions given there (i.e. antibiotics, breathing treatments, etc.)

are ineffective and the disease has to run its course. Prevention is the best way to “ treat” many diseases. 4.Vaccines have less disease antigens than they had years ago. As the science has gotten better, it takes much less of the inactivated (dead) or weakened antigen to get a robust immune response from your body--meaning they are safer than they’ve ever been and just as effective, if not more so. 5.Vaccines DO NOT overload the body’s immune system. Honestly, there are more than 700 different kinds of germs swimming around in a dog’s mouth, and we have no problem letting the family dog lick our kids all over! It’s okay, let the dog lick them, just remember that their immune system is able to easily handle 700+ bacteria so it can handle the few that they get in vaccines.

6.You wouldn’t take advice on your tax es from your plumber (unless he’s also a CPA, of course!). So don’t take advice on immunizations from just anyone. The proof that vaccines work are all around you. When was the last time you heard of an outbreak of diphtheria in the United States? Before widespread vaccination, the United States recorded 206,000 cases of diphtheria in 1921, resulting in 15,520 deaths— that’s a death rate of 8 people out of every 100. Now, diphtheria is not eradicated worldwide, on average each year there are still about 2 cases in the U.S. and about 7,100 cases in other countries. For that reason, it’s more important than ever to keep up our immunization rates. So where can you go to get reliable information on vaccines? There’s lots of information out there and
