Dear Friends, With every new year comes that proverbial opportunity to start anew and enter the world refreshed and revitalized. With exactly that in mind, I am so excited for GPB in 2026. We have been working over the course of the last two years to sharpen GPB’s focus in and on communities around the state. While Georgians have long known GPB as a place for unbiased and fact-centered news, enlightening entertainment on television and radio and the best of national programming on PBS and NPR, what they might not know is how much value GPB brings to Georgia outside of those very important mission delivery systems. Our strategic plan was released a year ago this month, and since that time we’ve made great strides in our mission critical areas – Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness, Literacy and Learning and Civic Engagement. And we made this progress in spite of the unexpected loss of our federal funding (amounting to more than $4 million for GPB) in this fiscal year. In some ways that challenging moment has given way to a much better understanding of the need for GPB across Georgia. Thousands of additional donors have stepped up to support GPB since July of last year – and they’ve brought their resolve and commitment to help see GPB through. But we don’t just want to survive – our focus is to THRIVE. Together we can build a GPB that will continue to be a valued resource for the people of Georgia and surrounding areas for generations to come. Things change. GPB isn’t the same company with the same delivery mechanisms we had 60 years ago, but the mission that guides us has survived and only strengthened over that time. Stagefright Takes The Spotlight At By Rachel Buchman
T
his past April, stage fright represented two distinct things for me.
One, it’s the title of a framed pen-and-ink drawing by American artist Ed Ruscha measuring approximately 40 inches wide by 14 inches tall that has been quite elusive to find any information about online. Inside the Georgia State Railroad Museum. Credit: Ali Cotton.
Two, it was what I was hoping my mother, Dr. Barbara Zehnbauer, wasn’t experiencing
while sharing this information with appraiser Colleene Fesko while being filmed for Season 30 of Antiques Roadshow in Savannah, Stagefright on display proudly between them.
“Antiques Roadshow was a Monday night staple in my house growing up as we enjoyed dinner with a side of history.” As you may know, Antiques Roadshow chose Savannah as one of their destinations for their thirtieth season, an honor for GPB and Georgians alike. Months of collaboration between WGBH, the station that produces Antiques Roadshow, and GPB resulted in a day of filming at the Georgia State Railroad Museum with over 100 volunteers, thousands of items appraised and dozens of items filmed. Beginning Monday, January 26, you can watch three episodes featuring Savannah treasures and a behind-the-scenes special from GPB about the experience. For years, fans have followed the show across the country, enthralled by what guests have found at yard sales, antique shops or, in my family’s case, passed down through generations. Antiques Roadshow was a Monday night staple in my house growing up as we enjoyed dinner with a side of history.

Enter Stagefright. “I thought that was one of the few things we could bring to learn some more about it,” my mother explained. “I had no idea what my mother-in-law, your grandmother, paid for it. We had no idea what it was worth.” With my mother and my husband both eager to help (my father was away on a business trip at the time), we decided to bring six items passed on to us by my paternal grandparents for appraisal, the drawing by Ed Ruscha included. And it was Stagefright that stumped the appraisers, or so my mother believed. The process of getting an item appraised on Antiques Roadshow is the following: guests bring their items to the triage tent where the first round of appraisers directs them to the appropriate table. Then, they’re escorted by volunteers to where they meet their specific appraiser out of over 20 different categories for a verbal appraisal. But that’s not quite what happened to my mother and Stagefright. “The appraisers are just going back and forth looking at it,” my mother recalls of the appraisal process. “They’re kind of whispering to each other but not saying much to me for 15 minutes, wondering if it was sold at this auction or that auction. I was wondering what was going on, when one of the appraisers asked if I would be willing to talk about Stagefright with a producer.” Behind the scenes with the GPB Production Crew. NEXT Magazine That appraiser was Colleene Fesko, and soon enough after she realized what they were asking, my mother was whisked away to the building set aside for filming prep. Ditching her Roadshow volunteer shirt for a clean, plain one, the makeup artist and hair stylist polished her look and soon she was in front of several cameras and Roadshow crew, Stagefright on display. And Colleene Fesko, as secretive as she’d been the entire time, showed no amount of stage fright once the cameras started rolling. “Ms. Fesko was asked to introduce the piece, and after having barely said anything to me, she immediately launched into ‘This is an amazing work by a seminal American artist!’ The energy, enthusiasm, just exploded,” my mother elaborated.

I asked what was going through my mother’s mind during the filming, and she remembered the two most important things: being certain not to accidentally say something she shouldn’t, and that she needed to discuss the appraisal with my father upon returning to Atlanta. Without Ms. Fesko and the team behind Antiques Roadshow, my parents would have never learned so much about Stagefright, from the history of the piece to the verbal appraisal. Now, they hope to share that knowledge and the piece itself with all of Georgia. Shortly after filming, they offered Stagefright by Ed Ruscha to the High Museum of Atlanta’s permanent collection, a gift that was enthusiastically accepted. While it has yet to be displayed by the time of this magazine’s publication, I hope that one day soon a piece of Antiques Roadshow history in Georgia will be on view for visitors from across the state and around the world.

D
o you have a child in your life who loves writing stories? If so, encourage them to enter the 2026 PBS KIDS Writers Contest
launching this month on January 12 for Georgia students in kindergarten through third grade. The contest encourages students to submit original, illustrated stories for great prizes and a chance to be featured on GPB’s website.

Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or graphic novel, and submissions will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. Inside GPB Narrative Edge Hosts Live Taping with Author Lorissa Rinehart for “Winning the Earthquake”, the First Major Biography of Suffragist Jeannette Rankin.

arrative Edge hosted a special live taping at GPB’s headquarters in November with co-host Orlando Montoya speaking with author Lorissa Rinehart about her new book “Winning the Earthquake,” the first major
biography of Montana native Jeannette Rankin, the trailblazing suffragist, activist and first woman elected to Congress who spent 50 years living in Georgia.
Defying expectations to become the first woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1917 three years before women had the right to vote nationwide – Rankin was a lifelong advocate for peace, labor rights and social justice. When she died in 1973, she bequeathed part of her Georgia estate to help “mature, unemployed women workers,” which led to the founding of the Jeannette Rankin Foundation. Representatives of the foundation, which awards educational grants, were also at the event and coordinated a book signing along with Charis Books & More with author Lorissa Rinehart. “Jeannette would always say you can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake,” Rinehart responded when asked about the book’s title by an attendee of the taping. “’Winning the Earthquake’ to me is about two things. One was pursuing the path of peace. The only way to win the war is to never pursue war in the beginning. The second was Jeannette always attempted the impossible knowing it was impossible. Also, the vintage wooden boats of Lake Rabun provide spectacular rides and serve as a link between the state’s history and the families that help shape it.
Episode 6: Dr. Raphael Bostic and the Ghosts of Atlanta’s Mega Airport Host Jeff Hullinger takes an early morning hike with the President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Raphael Bostic, and learns how someone who helps guide the country’s thirty trillion-dollar economy finds refuge from the daily stresses of life with the help of some ornithological friends. This episode also reveals the massive economic engine of Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
