Helping Georgians Receive Early Diagnosis for Alzheimer’s Is a loved one having trouble remembering things? It’s true that Alzheimer’s disease is a major cause of memory problems, but there are others. Thyroid disorders, sleep apnea, medications, and vascular disorders can all lead to dementia-like symptoms. Some memory problems are reversible, and accurate diagnosis can lead to appropriate support and treatment. The first step is to talk to a Primary Care Provider about your concerns. They may recommend an appointment with Georgia Memory Net for an accelerated, accurate diagnosis. Visit GaMemoryNet.org to learn more about getting a referral to a GMN Memory Assessment.

A Word from President & CEO Bert Wesley Huffman
Dear Friend, The long, hot days of summer are waning, and as I write this, educators and students across the state are readying themselves for exciting challenges and learning experiences with the start of the new school year. If that’s not on your late summer agenda, maybe you’re getting in one last summer getaway with family or, like me, you’ve desperately begun searching for little changes in the light and breeze signaling the impending autumn. And you know what that means – Friday Night Football on GPB! As you see on the cover of this issue, this year GPB is celebrating 30 seasons of high school football coverage across the state, and we’ll be taking a look back at some of the greatest moments of games past as we keep you informed about your favorite teams and the schools they represent. We’ve also just launched Biology Revealed, a new high school science video series that joins Chemistry Matters, Physics in Motion and Let’s Go Enviro to support engaging, standards-aligned science instruction. Consider this your monthly reminder that GPB is doing so much for Georgia across so many platforms – take a moment to inventory how many intersections GPB has with your daily life – you may be surprised at just how much you’re using this resource! This month we’re also featuring a special piece from GPB’s new reporter in Savannah, Jillian Magtoto, discussing her experiences covering stories from the Georgia coast. Fall radio fund drive is on the way and besides appreciating the support you provide during this time and throughout the year, I also genuinely enjoy hearing your calls and reading comments about the role GPB plays in your daily lives. You are our greatest inspiration. Every month, we take pride in the breadth of programming and resources GPB has to share, and I hope you know that as a loyal donor, you are the common denominator making each of these initiatives possible. Thank you for sharing in our vision to Unite & Uplift Georgia with your continued support. Warmly,
Bert Wesley Huffman

GPB Marks the 30th Season of High School Football Coverage by Mandy Wilson
A
s we begin our discussion about the upcoming 30th season of high school football coverage on GPB, game correspondent and host Jon Nelson confesses he has four separate calendars to keep up with the various activities that are
part of his job, including the live game coverage, the Football Fridays in Georgia companion podcast and creating content for GPB’s social media platforms.
A regular fixture since season coverage began in 1996, Nelson has enough stories to fill up several calendars, including his recollection of a championship game where police helicopters from the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Department were enlisted to help dry off the field. “The game was on grass,” explains Nelson. “When you watch, you’ll see the sidelines are soaked.” This story, like so many others Nelson can share, illustrates the pride communities across Georgia take in their high school football programs. “We have been able to show for 30 seasons what high school athletics mean to the state of Georgia, says Nelson. “I think this goes to GPB leadership that has seen what high school football can be as a part of our mandate.” Jon Nelson.
gpb.org
Football Fridays in Georgia podcast episodes began airing weekly in August, and GPB’s first live game coverage, North Gwinnett at Mill Creek, will be broadcast and streamed Friday, September 11.
“We have been able to show for 30 seasons what high school athletics mean to the state of Georgia.”
- Jon Nelson
In addition, there will be a weekly feature airing through the season during our televised games recognizing some of the most memorable moments, teams, players and coaches from past seasons. GPB is also gathering “shout outs’ from former players talking about their high school football experience and what GPB’s coverage has meant to them. It will include NFL players, political leaders, long-time sponsors, and others who have gone on to success both on and off the field. Followers of GPB’s sports social media platforms will also have the opportunity to vote for the top player, coach and team of the past 30 seasons. GPB Launches New High School Biology Series, By Mary Anne Lane
G
PB is proud to announce the launch of Biology Revealed, a new high school science video series, designed to help students explore the world of biology through engaging, real-world learning experiences. The series
brings biological concepts beyond the traditional classroom by showing students how science connects to the environments, research and communities around them, making abstract ideas more visible, relevant, and memorable.
Developed in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education, Biology Revealed is aligned directly with Georgia’s biology state standards and brings complex scientific concepts to life through a combination of studio-based demonstrations and on-location field experiences. Students can explore biology in action at some of Georgia’s most dynamic learning environments, including Sapelo Island, the Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia Tech and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. By combining classroom instruction with authentic field experiences, the series helps students see how biology shapes the world they experience every day. Hosted by Arielle Prepetit, the series includes 18 instructional videos organized around five core units: Organization, Genetics, Reproduction, Ecosystems and Biodiversity and Ecology. Each episode includes classroom-ready resources such as teaching tips, key vocabulary, discussion questions and student activities to support educators and encourage deeper learning. Designed with flexibility in mind, the videos can be used to introduce new concepts, reinforce Host Arielle Prepetit.

Meet GPB Reporter
Jillian Magtoto Reporter Jillian Magtoto recently joined GPB to cover the environment and climate in coastal and South Georgia as part of a grant from the Green South Foundation. This month, she’s sharing how her sense of adventure led her to Savannah and what it means to her to share these important Georgia stories.
W
hy Savannah? I’ve heard this question a lot, from friends and family in my hometown of Los Angeles and college town in Berkeley. Those questions were valid. I had never demonstrated an interest in moving to the South.
I told people, I’m here for a job. The Savannah Morning News had an opening. Eleven people applied, LinkedIn said. Odds seemed good enough. But I think, deeper than that, I wanted adventure. Since I was young, I tended to jump headfirst into things. I remember a river rafting trip with my family in Oregon soured for me when my mother wouldn’t let me jump off a cliff into rushing water, which may have had some rocks. I eventually took my opportunity to backflip off of one into the ocean on a high school trip. After seeing my bloody nose, likely from the force of the faceplant, a teacher decided to end the activity for everyone. Since then, I have luckily developed more of a brain that can foresee consequences and also, a fear of heights. But the urge to dive headfirst into the unknown hasn’t left me. I had an itch to see more of the country and people’s lives outside of California. I also wanted to be a reporter, something that feels most important in a place like Georgia. A report found there are 5.8 reporters per Jillian conducts an interview at Okefenokee Swamp.
100,000 residents here, ranking the state 46th in the nation.
gpb.org
11
Jillian paddles near Sapelo Island.
The same report found local journalists in America have declined by 75% since 2002. Working at the local Savannah paper, the holes of beats and stories journalists used to fill seemed ever-present. The paper that has been around since the 1800s has shrunk to just a handful of reporters, making each article we wrote feel more important. Now, at GPB, I feel the importance of each segment. Listening to public radio in California was a daily ritual for me, and it feels surreal to be able to do so for Georgians today. I seek to report on what coastal Georgians care about most, which I have found includes water quality, environmental health, and industrial sprawl. Luckily for me, those issues have coincided with stories that involve boats, baby turtles, protected beaches, and one of my favorites, packed public meetings. Being part of this newsroom has truly affirmed why I’m here - why I’m in Savannah.

Inside GPB GPB Whets Attendees’ “App”etites at Atlanta’s PeachFest On Sunday, July 12, GPB attended PeachFest at Underground Atlanta as a media sponsor for the annual festival celebrating Georgia’s most famous fruit. This was PeachFest’s first year at the venue, having previously been held at Peachtree Center, but over 1,000 ticketed attendees came out to sample food and drinks from chefs and vendors across the state. As a break in some of the culinary delights, GPB was proud to share information with attendees about our updated GPB App and the various programs and services offered as part of the update, including the ability to stream upcoming seasons of some of our most popular cooking shows America’s Test Kitchen and Cook’s Country, both of which return with new episodes this month.

GPB Hosts Exclusive Atlanta Screening of Arrest the Midwife GPB partnered with POV for an exclusive screening of Arrest the Midwife at the Tara Theater in Atlanta on July 31. Attendees were the first in Georgia to watch the film about how the arrest of trusted midwives in New York ignites an unexpected rebellion, as Amish and Mennonite women break from tradition and emerge as fierce political activists — joining the broader fight for reproductive justice. Afterwards, local midwives and experts discussed how the film’s topics connect to reproductive issues in Georgia.
Daniel Tiger Delights Guests of All Ages at Atlanta Braves Game As part of a pilot partnership between Fred Rogers Productions and the Atlanta Braves, GPB staff connected with families before the July 20 Braves game through a Daniel Tiger-themed outreach. A few hundred children and caregivers visited our table and received giveaways, including personalized pennants and stickers, before having the opportunity to take photos with beloved Daniel Tiger characters and Braves mascot Blooper, creating memorable moments before heading to their seats. The event provided a fun way to introduce families to GPB and Fred Rogers Productions’ educational resources, and GPB staff also used the opportunity to encourage participation in upcoming events, including Be My Neighbor Day in October.

Murder, Mystery and Third Acts: MASTERPIECE’s Smartest Amateur Sleuths Return in The Marlow Murder Club and Marble Hall Murders By Rachel Buchman
I
f there are two things that an amateur sleuth requires, it’s defying the odds and never doing what the world expects of you. For me, that’s one of the most fascinating aspects of mystery programs: whether someone’s a vicar’s wife, a retired professional
or a small business owner, a keen intellect and the ability to uncover the truth keeps me watching. The fact that every amateur sleuth in September’s MASTERPIECE lineup is a woman of a certain age is motivating, particularly for a millennial like me. Life doesn’t end once one enters middle age: it’s just getting started, and the heroines of The Marlow
Murder Club and Marble Hall Murders have come a long way in redefining the female sleuth archetype since the Miss Marple TV series I grew up with in the 1990s. Check out our preview of MASTERPIECE’s latest seasons below, with both series returning to GPB-TV and streaming with GPB Passport on Sunday, September 6. Returning to the town of Marlow is, in many ways, a comfort: Judith (Samantha Bond, Home Fires) still loves to swim, Becks (Cara Horgan, Traitors) is still keeping her husband and kids in line and Suzie (Jo Martin, Doctor Who) still goes on long walks with her dog, Luna. But there’s a clear shift in dynamics in season three of The Marlow Murder Club, particularly in how DS Tanika Malik (Natalie Dew, The Capture) has come to not only respect the club’s expertise in assisting with murder cases but actively seeks their help. With that help comes a friendship with Tanika and the rest of the police team that’s a joy to watch, particularly during a touching moment between Tanika and Suzie when the former has a crisis of confidence.
gpb.org
But there are still surprises along the way as the club finds themselves involved in three cases over the course of six episodes: the first based on author Robert Thorogood’s third book “The Queen of Poisons,” while the other two cases are original works for the show. I really enjoyed seeing Becks at the center of one of the mysteries, while another ventures into Marlow’s top-notch culinary world. As the show progresses through the third season, it does a wonderful job of both allowing all four female leads to grow and develop as characters while also highlighting some of Marlow’s unique attributes. The Marlow Murder Club also welcomes several notable guest stars: eagle-eyed British drama fans might spot Peter Davison (Doctor Who) and Alastair MacKenzie (Monarch of the Glen) in Marlow this season. All in all, season three of The Marlow Murder Club left me wanting more mysteries for the cast to solve and a desire to visit Marlow for myself, if just for a relaxing walk by the river. In contrast, Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville, The Crown) has left a quiet life in Crete, and her former partner Andreas, behind for a new chapter back in London. The beginning of Marble Hall Murders, the adaptation of author Anthony Horowitz’s third book in the Susan Ryeland Mysteries, feels like a restart of Susan’s career as an editor as she seeks to join a publishing agency. However, she finds that no matter what, she cannot escape the famous fictional detective, Atticus Pünd (Tim McMullan, Foyle’s War). She’s introduced to the floundering young writer Eliot Crace (Jamie Blackley, Outrageous), who has yet to find literary success while living in the legacy of his grandmother, renowned children’s book author Miriam Crace (Patricia Hodge, All Creatures Great & Small). Nevertheless, he’s embarked upon writing a new Atticus Pünd mystery novel and, within its pages, claims that he’s hidden the identity of his famous grandmother’s killer. Once again, Susan is thrust both into Atticus Pünd’s world, with apparitions of the fictional detective guiding her in her own sleuthing along the way. But the twists and turns of both mysteries require her to not only use her ability to read between the lines, but also forces Susan to revisit a past she’d rather leave behind as well as rely on the help of new friends she has no choice but to trust. Like Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders before it, many of the stars of Marble Hall Murders play two different roles, one in the Pünd fictional story and one in the real-life mystery Susan is determined to solve, with British drama fans likely recognizing Rupert Penry-Jones (Persuasion) and Mark Bonnar (Guilt) alongside Hodge. But the beating heart of the show is the connection between Susan and Pünd: Marble Hall Murders is the final story for both sleuths, but I felt hopeful for their futures upon finishing the show.
The Marlow Murder Club and Marble Hall Murders premiere Sunday, September 6 on GPB-TV and will both air for six episodes. Both series will be available to stream with GPB Passport.

HED: Celebrating Georgia Voices in Everyday Moments By Tori Mooney
T
he most powerful learning often comes from engaging with people and places around us. As an Emory University Ethics and Servant Leadership (EASL) intern at Georgia Public Broadcasting, I experienced many small moments of connection
that have shaped how I view the world. The EASL program brings together a group of Emory students to grow as global citizens through classroom instruction and internships at community-serving organizations across Atlanta. As a Community Engagement intern, I helped facilitate partnerships, plan events connecting diverse communities across the state and highlight new initiatives with different types of media.
From left to right: Christian Stegall, Tori Mooney and Amanda Densmore.
Throughout this experience, I have encountered the necessity of public media for community flourishing.
A central part of GPB’s mission is telling stories that represent all Georgians, including both nationally recognized headlines and the stories of everyday people. That’s what makes public media special – it creates space for people of all backgrounds to connect. One of my projects was to create a blog series for a new webpage focused on GPB’s Move to Include accessibility initiative. Through speaking to individuals who have dedicated their lives to ensuring that people of all abilities can thrive, I came to understand that leadership is found in everyday moments of intention, taking the time to communicate to someone that their voice matters. Servant leadership does not necessarily mean being the loudest voice but rather being dedicated to creating space for others to grow. From exploring Georgia’s musical history alongside the Marked! series to inspiring young journalists with the Student Voices Collective, I experienced how GPB mobilizes media to bring these moments of growth and connection to life. I am filled with gratitude for the support of such a wonderful team in working to celebrate the voices of Georgia communities that make us who we are.
Tori Mooney joins middle and high school students and teachers from across Georgia for the annual Student Voices Collective workshop.
Malcolm Gladwell will speak about his new book, The American Way of Killing: The Invention of an Epidemic in conversation with Peter Biello, host of GPB’s All Things Considered. Tickets include a pre-signed hardcover edition of the book.
