Dear Friends, How often do you find yourself saying, “How can it already be…?”? You can insert any number of holidays, months or life events into the end of that question. Maybe we do that because we tend to lose our focus in the minute details of everyday life – finding that difficult balance with work, family and various other obligations. But now and again, nature snaps us awake with a beautiful display impossible to miss. That to me, is the fall of the year. Just this week, I’ve been enjoying the crisper light, cooler mornings and the beginning dulling of the bright green trees to various shades of amber and rust. I hope you’re experiencing the same thing and finding (or making) time to enjoy all of the beauty that autumn brings. Fall is also special to me because it ushers in Thanksgiving and an emphasis on gratitude in general. This month in particular is a good time to stop and bring to mind people and places that are especially in our hearts. It’s my sincere hope that GPB is on your list of places you hold dear. Every day we work to bring you the best in public media across so many platforms, but even more than that we strive to make your home, Georgia, even better. When I think of how many children in Georgia benefit from our free educational resources, or I see the smile on a child’s face when they meet their hero, Daniel Tiger, I am instantly grateful for what GPB means to the communities we serve, and to me. This place has served as a constant in my life for a decade now, and honestly it was the first decade when I felt comfortable in my adult skin, navigating the world in a more confident and expressive way. I think GPB was instrumental in giving me that, and that’s why I want to share it with all of you. So, use this month focused on gratitude to spend time with your family, enjoy delicious food, maybe hike through the colorful mountains, and save just a little time for GPB. And, if you are able, consider an additional gift this year for those who are so grateful for what GPB does in their lives, but they cannot afford to give right now. This resource is so valuable for everyone in Georgia, and I think that’s something we can all be thankful for.

GPB Education Commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month with a Special Showing of PBS KIDS Favorite Alma’s Way

s children and their families gathered at the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University last October to celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, GPB was proud to take part in the special event showing

of an episode of the PBS KIDS program Alma’s Way.

Attendees visiting the museum galleries as part of the exhibition You Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography, viewed photography by Latinx artists from across the country, while the special episode of Alma’s Way featured the young character exploring community murals in her neighborhood.

Author Raúl the Third (Center) works with kids at GPB’s event. Feeling very inspired, attendees worked together with New York Times bestselling and three-time Pura Belpre award-winning illustrator and author Raúl the Third to color a community mural taken from his book, ¡Vamos! Let’s Cross the Bridge. The multi-talented author also hosted special story time sessions that included books from his popular ¡Vamos! series featuring Little Lobo and a cast of characters.

GPB also provided attendees with PBS KIDS backpacks stuffed with learning activities, GASHA GO! World activity books and information about many other GPB and PBS learning resources. GPB Highlights Environmental Changemakers with WILD HOPE Documentary Series at CompassionCon

ith so much negative environmental news out there, it is more crucial than ever to show that all hope is not lost. And while climate change is global and requires global solutions, biodiversity loss often takes

place locally, so individuals can help reverse it through local efforts to protect wildlife and wild spaces. GPB was pleased to be a part of CompassionCon this fall, an Atlanta-area community-based festival where attendees explored conservation successes from around the world and learned about fun and exciting ways to get involved in our communities’ environmental efforts. CompassionCon featured multiple areas focused on different topics, including a Learning Garden, Healthcare Pavilion, Civil & Human Rights Town Center and YOU(th) Belong Village among others.

The activities and family-friendly attractions associated with each topic area highlighted the viral nature of compassion when our community prioritizes common humanity and interdependence. GPB hosted the Environmental Hub area of the event, where we highlighted the WILD HOPE documentary series that shares global stories of intrepid changemakers who are restoring and protecting our planet through hyper-local initiatives

measurable progress. The series highlights how individuals from diverse backgrounds, including scientists, landowners,

ovember 22 marks 60 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Inside The Warren Commission presents a riveting account of the people who worked tirelessly to discover the truth behind this

national tragedy. The Warren Report is perhaps the most misunderstood document in modern history and remains unread by most Americans. This documentary from filmmaker William VanDerKloot offers viewers insight into its content, the commission who authored it and their investigation. Based on new evidence, the film showcases the personalities, politics, and challenges − both internal and external − that made this investigation one of the most controversial of our time. Featured interviews include Tom Johnson, Special Assistant to President Lydon Johnson, and Charles E. Campbell and Earl Leonard, who served as Executive Secretary and Press Secretary respectively to U.S. Senator Richard Russell of Georgia. Tune in for this enthralling documentary Monday, November 20 at 10 p.m.

Television From Season 9 of Finding Your Roots featuring Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. guiding 21 guests through their family tree with cutting-edge DNA analysis, to American Experience’s series, Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History, which reveals the untold tale of corruption behind the makers of the game – GPB brought audiences a variety of compelling programs this year. PBS also launched an unprecedented environmental and climate initiative through a series of programs examining climate change’s impact on sensitive communities and more. And, the all-new Crisis of Substance documentary, produced by GPB in partnership with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, sought to bring both awareness and hope for change in Georgia’s opioid crisis. Radio/News/Digital GPB presented live coverage of the January Gubernatorial Inauguration across our TV, Radio and Digital platforms from Georgia State University. Additionally, GPB News launched a new daily podcast, Georgia Today with Peter Biello, bringing listeners in-depth reporting and compelling stories from across the state every weekday afternoon. The Battleground: Ballot Box podcast with GPB reporter Stephen Fowler also examined how voting works in Georgia, along with providing additional political news coverage. GPB launched the Peach Jam Podcast to bring listeners songs and stories from a variety of talented, diverse bands and artists who call Georgia home. In addition to the many issues affecting Georgians that it covers, GPB News is also continuing to be an expert source for in-depth reporting on public health policy, the health care crisis facing rural communities and mental health issues. GPB hosted the popular public radio program Science Friday for an event featuring host Ira Flatow, award-winning science correspondent. The event drew in enthusiastic listeners to learn about creatures of the sea at this unique, pop-science experience. GPB also hosted a special event with Mary Louise Kelly, a national co-host of NPR’s All Things Considered. Kelly, a Georgia native, talked with attendees about her experiences and long career in public radio, as well as discussing her latest book, It. Goes. So. Fast: The Year of No Do-Overs, released this year.

GPB Education GPB Education is Georgia’s digital education content provider and encourages lifelong learning by providing innovative, engaging, standards-aligned digital learning resources and support to Georgia’s educators, students, and families.

From July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, Georgia Public Broadcasting’s online education content was accessed over 11 million times.

Our top five resources were... Lights, Camera, Budget!, a financial literacy game for secondary students Georgia Studies digital collection Physics in Motion video series Chemistry Matters video series Econ Express online course

We’ve engaged with educators and families through our monthly newsletter (51,000 subscribers), Facebook (3K followers) and Twitter (7K followers) pages, YouTube account (28K subscribers), and Georgia Studies teachers Facebook group (over 1K members). GPB Education reached over 5,000 educators, students, and their families through educator trainings, kids camps, family learning workshops, and our mobile virtual reality lab.

In addition, GPB Education had several exciting initiatives during the 2022-2023 School Year: Launched Let’s Go Enviro, a new video series with support materials for high school aligned to environmental science standards. Launched seasons 2 and 3 of Classroom Conversations podcast. GPB’s collaboration with GaDOE received a 2023 Communicator Award of Distinction and has been downloaded over 45,000 times. GASHA Go World!: Claw Control, latest game for primary computer science, received a 2023 EdTech Cool Tool Award. Hosted Pollinators Live Exploration at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens that had a live audience of over 20K students and educators. This makes our 10th live exploration event. Launched Start It UP! – a small business simulator game for high school students - a collaboration with Georgia Council for Economic Education and funded by Truist Foundation. Received the Overall Excellence in Education award at the 54th Annual Public Media Awards presented by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA). Added hundreds of new resources to Georgia Home Classroom, our collaboration with GaDOE (including digital learning plans, Let’s Learn GA videos, School Stories videos, instructional support videos, etc) Added more episodes to Camp GPB, our summer series for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. Held the PBS KIDS Writers Contest for kids in kindergarten through 3rd grade and hosted an awards ceremony for families at our GPB headquarters. We had over 200 entries. Distributed 3,500 backpacks full of learning resources and supplies in under-resourced communities across the state.

Community Engagement Community engagement is at the core of our mission and essential to the value of public media, as we educate, serve, and create positive change in the community.

A musical celebration of Black history to advance racial solidarity, equity and belonging with Music in Common and the Black Legacy Project. GPB takes our commitment to engaging communities throughout the state of Georgia seriously. This engagement takes many forms, including in-person and virtual film screenings, storytelling workshops and initiatives, and connecting with children and caregivers through trusted PBS KIDS content. We work with a wide variety of community partners to bring local relevance to national content from PBS and NPR, while also bringing to life local content produced right here at GPB. We explored topics including opioid harm reduction, worker’s rights and universal basic income, immigration and belonging, the criminal justice system, family dynamics and legacy, meritocracy and educational inequity, and more through documentary film screenings with Independent Lens, POV, and American Experience. We celebrated Black joy with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s Making Black America film and accompanying student art exhibit and performances. We explored family genealogy with a series of virtual events around Finding Your Roots and partnered with the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society for an in-person workshop at the Georgia Archives. And we honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a musical celebration of Black history to advance racial solidarity, equity and belonging with Music in Common and the Black Legacy Project. Mental health and wellness continues to be a priority for us. We were pleased to partner with a number of organizations to help connect Georgians with information and resources, including, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Mercer School of Medicine’s Center for Rural Health and Health Disparities, South Georgia Health Start, Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center, Postpartum Support International, and Hillside Atlanta, to name a few. Providing space and opportunity for storytelling with a diverse array of voices through partnerships with The Moth, StoryCorps, and Southern Storytellers was a pleasure and allowed us to help build respect and empathy for one another. We’ve had fun exploring this beautiful state and learning about icons in all corners on scavenger hunts with the Georgia Geocacher’s Association through the Iconic America series this summer.
