MASTERPIECE: Ridley Road Sundays, May 1 – May 22, 9 PM
S
ummer 1962: London is swinging with new music, hip fashions and an irresistible hedonistic spirit. It’s also seething with antisemitic violence incited by homegrown neo-Nazis. MASTERPIECE presents a riveting drama set in this colorful but tumultuous time on Ridley Road, based on Jo Bloom’s acclaimed novel.
Inspired by true events, Ridley Road stars newcomer Agnes O’Casey as Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish hairdresser who fits right into London’s mod scene, while secretly infiltrating the British neo-Nazi hierarchy on behalf of Jewish antifascists. O’Casey is joined by Rory Kinnear (No Time to Die) as Colin Jordan, the real-life leader of Britain’s post-World War II Nazi movement, and Tom Varey (Game of Thrones) as Jack, Vivien’s true love.

Politics is the last thing on Vivien’s mind when she flees a proposed arranged marriage in Manchester to find Jack, whom her parents deplore. Little does she know that Jack has been
recruited
by
the
62 Group in London as a mole to infiltrate the National Socialist Movement, a fascist party promoting violent antisemitism and racism. Before she knows it, Vivien is also recruited—with the mission of finding out what has happened to Jack. The assignment requires her to change her look, her name, and her personality, becoming an apparent Nazi and ardent admirer of the movement’s charismatic leader, Jordan. She is far more successful than anyone dreamed possible, which pulls her deeper and deeper into a vicious lion’s den of intrigue. “Ridley Road has a strong message to convey,” says MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson. “Writer Sarah Solemani and executive producer Nicola Shindler have created a compelling story to remind us that fascism continues to exist in our society, and we need to ask the question, what are we going to do about it?”

n order to honor and pay tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success, May has been chosen as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) month.
Specifically, May was chosen to commemorate two significant milestones: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the contributions of up to 20,000 Chinese workers to the construction of the transcontinental railroad, which was completed on May 10, 1869.

pring has sprung in Georgia and while the high pollen count may bring sneezes and sniffles, the buds and blossoms are beautiful! GPB was pleased to participate in the Atlanta Science Festival in March with two events exploring Georgia’s
pollinators and the important role they play in agriculture, food production and the beauty of our backyards, gardens and green spaces. Attendees of Georgia Pollinators
Field Day learned about insects, ran pollinator relays, and built the ultimate pollinator bracket where the Southeastern Blueberry Bee came out on top! Afternoon sessions included pollinator garden planning activities, information about monarchs and other butterflies in Georgia, and the Great Georgia Pollinator Census.

CEO SPOTLIGHT PBS NAMED THE MOST TRUSTED MEDIA INSTITUTION FOR THE 19TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR by GPB CEO Teya Ryan Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, PBS and its member stations, like GPB, have offered important and timely services to local communities, teachers, parents, and students. As a public media outlet, one of the greatest indicators of our success is the trust that our audiences put into the work that we do. So, it gives me great pride to share that according to national survey conducted in January of this year, PBS has been named the most trusted media organization for the 19th year in a row. In addition, the survey examined taxpayer and community value, as well as the trust placed in educational resources from PBS.

Highlights of the Survey Include: Americans rate PBS highly in terms of value for tax dollars. PBS ranks high in terms of taxpayer value, with 66% of respondents calling it a “good” or “excellent” value, falling only behind the country’s military defense (75%), Social Security (71%) and oversight of food and drug safety (68%).
86% agree that PBS stations provide an excellent value to communities. When asked if the funding for public broadcasting was adequate, nearly 90% said funding was either about right or too little.
PBS KIDS was ranked the #1 educational media brand for children, compared with a host of other children’s media providers. 84% of parents agreed that PBS KIDS helps prepare children for success in school, ahead of Nick Jr. (71%), Disney+ (71%) and Netflix (46%).
