The springtime here is so majestic from the lush forests to the highways strewn with dazzling wildflowers. And, fortunately, warmer weather and longer days are ahead of us. Spring is a time of renewal, and here at GPB, it a time to renew our commitment to you with programming that enlightens and entertains across all our platforms. The warmer weather may pull you outdoors a bit more, but I hope you’ll save a little time for some exciting programming coming your way this month. Let’s start with our cover story – the long-awaited return of the MASTERPIECE drama based on the unfinished novel of Jane Austen, Sanditon, for its second season. You’ll travel back to the early 1800’s and experience the splendor of the English seaside resort starting Sunday, March 20 at 9 pm. (catch up on season one with your donor benefit GPB Passport)! And, the same evening we bring you Before We Die, an exciting new adventure for the mystery lovers out there. Your inner adventurer won’t want to miss Expedition with Steve Backshall: Unpacked on Wednesdays starting March 23, and Celtic Woman returns with a stunning show filmed in Ireland during the pandemic – and we have tickets to see them live at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre on March 15. GPB Radio brings you another iteration of the wildly popular NPR Tiny Desk Concert as well as all the news and information to keep you up to date with what’s happening around the state, the country and our world. Sanditon, Season 2 on MASTERPIECE

Sundays, March 20 - April 24, 2022 Romance Resumes at Jane Austen’s Seaside Town The plot thickens at an English seaside resort in the early 1800s as MASTERPIECE continues its hit series expanding on Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel. Rose Williams (The Power) returns as the high-spirited heroine, Charlotte Heywood, with Crystal Clarke (Ordeal by Innocence) as the independent West Indian heiress, Georgiana Lambe. Both are on the receiving end of multiple romantic proposals on Sanditon, Season 2, airing at 9 p.m. on Sundays, March 20 to April 24. In addition to Williams and Clarke, the returning cast includes Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) as Lady Denham, the demanding chief investor in a scheme to turn sleepy, coastal Sanditon into a fashionable holiday getaway; Kris Marshall (Death in Paradise) as Tom Parker, the visionary behind the venture; Kate Ashfield (A Confession) as Tom’s levelheaded wife, Mary; and Turlough Convery (Killing Eve) as Tom’s amiable and underrated brother, Arthur.

Season 2 of Sanditon continues Jane Austen’s classic quandary of how independentminded young women can make their way in patriarchal Regency-era England. Society insists that they take a husband, but Charlotte and Georgiana have mixed feelings about matrimony. Another Austenian theme is the allure of military men. During the Napoleonic Wars, young officers moved around the country with their troops, providing eligible women dashing dance partners, who were usually more romantically experienced

than

the

local

lads.

Sanditon features just such an enticing encampment of potential husbands and heartbreakers. Sanditon is filled with other delights as well as pointed social commentary. As the series depicts, English ladies really did organize a sugar boycott to protest the evils of slavery connected to the sugar trade. In Sanditon, Georgiana has more than enough reasons to lead the banner in this cause. “We’re delighted to bring more Sanditon to such a passionate and devoted fan base,” says MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson. “We worked with an amazing UK production team, Red Planet Pictures, to make a second and third season as well. Audiences can expect romance, humor and plenty of drama in the upcoming episodes.”

GPB EDUCATION GPB EDUCATION SHARES THE FUTURE OF LEARNING WITH STUDENTS THROUGHOUT GEORGIA

tudents across Georgia are being transported in space and time through cutting edge technology, thanks to a visit from GPB Education’s Mobile Virtual Reality (VR) Lab, an initiative made possible by the Imlay Foundation.

Continuing our mission to provide quality, no-cost digital content and recognizing the exciting educational opportunities available through VR, GPB Education has produced new Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE)-aligned resources in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education, the Telfair Museums and the Georgia Forestry Foundation. To provide Georgia’s students the opportunity to try out this immersive, engaging technology, the GPB Mobile VR Lab is bringing GPB Education’s Virtual Learning Journeys into middle and high school classrooms throughout the state.

Thus far, the lab has shared VR with nearly 1500 students and educators in 13 schools and at 11 professional development events around the state and is scheduled to visit 19 more through December 2022.

Two students at Oglethorpe County Middle School explore GPB Education’s Civil Rights Movement virtual learning journey together. The Mobile VR Lab is the first exposure that many students have to virtual reality, but it almost certainly won’t be the last. Students overwhelmingly agree that VR makes learning more interesting and that they’d like to use it again, saying they love “the way it feels realistic and so detailed” and “it can help people learn more because VR makes it fun!” Teachers find that a visit from the VR lab “really gets the students excited about learning and participating.” They appreciate “the chance to give students the opportunity to experience learning in a way that is new and innovative.”

o you have what it takes to perform at the Tiny Desk? NPR Music wants to hear from you! The Tiny Desk Contest is back for its eighth year and welcomes music from all genres and entrants from previous years with new material.

Since the launch of the Tiny Desk concert series in 2008, more than 900 performances have been recorded at the Tiny Desk — series creator Bob Boilen’s festive workspace at NPR headquarters. The series has provided a unique stage for artists across the genre spectrum and at every phase of their careers, including performances by Taylor Swift, Toro y Moi, the characters of Sesame Street and more. To enter The Tiny Desk Contest, unsigned musicians must play one original song at a desk, upload a video of the performance to YouTube and submit a completed entry form at NPR.org/tinydeskcontest by Monday, March 14 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Artists must be at least 18 years old and live in the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico to enter.

“The amount of creativity around this contest is extraordinary,” said Boilen. “Thousands of entries from all over the country, and it’s not only a thrill to watch these entries, but it’s fun to make one too. So do it!” In addition to playing their very own Tiny Desk concert, the 2022 Contest winner will appear on NPR’s All Things Considered and headline the five-stop Tiny Desk Contest On The Road tour. And before this year’s winner is announced, NPR Music will host more episodes of Tiny Desk Contest Top Shelf, a live streamed video series where contest judges share some of their favorite entries on NPR Music’s You Tube channel.

And perhaps even more extraordinary, they can plan, count and remember? The Green Planet, a recently announced, new five-part documentary series premiering on GPB in July with host Sir David Attenborough, uses pioneering new filmmaking technology to go beyond the power of the human eye to reveal the amazing, hidden life of plants. From stories of trees that care for each other, plants that hunt animals and plants that breed so fast they could cover the planet in a matter of months, this series is another reason why I am so gratified to share the stellar science programming and resources we are able to offer through PBS and GPB’s own original productions. Whether it’s our presentation The 2022 Georgia Tech Inventure Prize, our offering of a free day of activities at the 2022 Atlanta Science Festival or GPB Education’s delivery of Sir David Attenborough high-quality no-cost digital content developed in partnership with the Georgia Forestry Foundation via our Mobile VR Lab, it’s my hope that GPB can always be a place of discovery and inspiration for everyone that we serve.
