By now, the days are longer and summer is in full swing. I hope many of you are enjoying vacations or using the extra daylight hours and sunny days to take part in outdoor activities that you enjoy, especially in light of this year’s special America 250 celebrations. As you’ll see in this month’s cover story, GPB is offering a full slate of programming and events that commemorate this very special occasion, and we hope you’ll be a part of it with us.
What a year it has been for public media and GPB! As July marks the start of FY27 for GPB, I’d like to offer a most sincere thank you for supporting us over the past year. Last year at this time as I was writing my letter for NEXT, GPB was facing federal funding cuts which ultimately resulted in the loss of $4.3 million – approximately 12 percent of our overall budget. But through it all, you’ve helped to sustain us with donations that directly contribute to the vital work and resources we produce for Georgians of all walks of life. Just as importantly, the vocal support you’ve given us with your comments throughout the year has lifted our spirits and helped us get the word out to others who may be just learning about the important role public media plays in our society.
As a testament to this, GPB recently took home 11 Emmys for programming at the annual ceremony hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Southeast. Each of these awards recognized excellence in productions that capture unique Georgia stories from various aspects of our culture. You can read more in this issue about the award-winning productions and how you can view them.
We also hope you’ll read the articles about how GPB is spotlighting the achievements of some young Georgians through the America’s Awesome Kids and Farmcraft initiatives.

As Georgians prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday this month, Georgia Public Broadcasting lights up the party with an array of programming across TV, radio and more. Whether you love streaming content on GPB Passport, listening to our radio broadcasts or attending our community events, there’s a way for you to join in the fun and learn something new about the USA.
Television
PBS’ favorite summer television event to celebrate July 4, A Capitol Fourth, returns a day early this year to kick off festivities for America’s Semiquincentennial! A Capitol Fourth 2026: 250th Celebration Weekend airs Friday, July 3 at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live and streamed nationwide from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The 46-year tradition of America’s annual birthday party is full of all-star performances from pop, R&B, Broadway, classical, gospel and more, including a special performance from country music icon Trace Adkins as he debuts his brandnew song “American Made.” The show will conclude with a spectacular live fireworks show over Mount Vernon, the iconic home of George Washington.
On America’s birthday, GPB will premiere a new program to celebrate! America Made in Virginia: 250 Years Together celebrates the Semiquincentennial with a star-filled tribute set in the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg. Blending live performances, music and large-scale visual spectacle, this special is designed as both a celebration and a unifying national moment. Produced in partnership with VA250, this program honors the past, engages the present and is an opportunity for all Americans to see themselves reflected in our nation’s continuing story. America Made in Virginia: 250 Years Together premieres live on Saturday, July 4 at 8 p.m.

In the week leading up to the July 4 holiday, Music Director Sarah Zaslaw will be featuring American music on Serendipity on GPB’s Statewide network from 10 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday. Listeners will also be treated to part of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s “America@250” programming on Thursday, July 2 at 10 p.m. featuring Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2, “The Age of Anxiety.”

Additionally on Wednesday, July 1 at 10 p.m., in place of the first hour of Serendipity, we’ll feature the new hour-long special The Sounds of a New Nation, a program from WHRO that explores the cultural origins of America through music from the Colonial Era. And beginning on July 1, you’ll be able to hear the new short segment titled “Remember the Ladies.” Produced by WUGA, this weekly feature highlights notable Georgia women and will run every Wednesday and Saturday morning for the next few months.

People and Events in Our State’s History
Do you want to increase your knowledge of Georgia history? If so, Today in Georgia History segments, produced by GPB in collaboration with the Georgia Historical Society (GHS), to air across GPB’s television and radio networks, make the topic easily accessible by featuring a person or historical event associated with each day of the year.
In fact, the month of July contains several notable dates. For example, did you know that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), then known as the Communicable Disease Center, began in Atlanta on July 1, 1946, as part of the effort to combat mosquitoes and the spread of malaria?
“Today in Georgia History presented a wonderful opportunity for two statewide organizations to collaborate on something that would greatly impact both institutions and help them fulfill their missions. It has taught and continues to teach an entire generation of Georgians about their history, and I’m very proud to have been a small part of that,” said Dr. Stan Deaton, Senior Historian at the Georgia Historical Society.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, GBH Kids is celebrating “all kinds of awesome kids, one awesome country” in its new live-action short-form series, America’s Awesome Kids. Created in coordination with 23 partnering PBS stations across the country, the series is part of PBS’ “PBS KIDS Across America” initiative.
America’s Awesome Kids is a series of 25 short-form, live-action mini-documentaries. The project leveraged local station networks to find and film real, community-minded children (ages 4 to 8) in their hometowns, showcasing regional diversity and promoting civic engagement. Stories in the series range from caring for llamas in Iowa to Bollywood dancing in Georgia and exploring Cajun culture in Louisiana. Each episode highlights what sets local communities apart and how kids are making a difference.
“America’s Awesome Kids reflects the lives of our young audiences while also introducing them to the wide array of places, cultures, and customs from around the country,” said Dorothea Gillim, executive producer and creative director of GBH Kids. “Working with other PBS stations on this series has been a great opportunity to leverage the strength of public media to capture a uniquely local story for a national audience and build empathy and a sense of connection across the country.”
In Georgia, the series features Sahana, a 7-year-old from Acworth who shares her love of Bollywood dancing and how she helps clean up her community with her Helping Heart Girl Club.

America’s Awesome Kids began streaming for free on the PBS KIDS Video App, pbskids.org, on the America’s Awesome Kids YouTube channel and on GBH Kids on May 22. To celebrate the release of the series, GPB joined Sahana, her family and classmates at school to watch Sahana’s episode. The entire school watched it at the same time through the daily newscast in their classrooms.
After the screening, Sahana’s classmates each drew a paper quilt piece highlighting what makes them an awesome kid. The pieces will be joined together to make a community quilt.
GBH Kids is extending the learning beyond the screen, with America’s Awesome Kids educational materials for children, families, and educators being distributed by stations and nonprofits. Children can use a passport and stickers to track their progress through the episodes.

Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel
Premiering on GPB back in 2011, this documentary features interviews with leading historians, biogra phers and people with personal connections to the Georgia author as well as dramatic re-enactments based on her own reflections. This film also examines the endurance of Gone With the Wind cultures and over time.

From Georgia Farm Boy to Iwo Jima Marine: Roy Cadenhead’s WWII Memories
The Long Shadow of Bobby Jones
As part of our Georgia in WWII series, this documentary premiered in 2007 and follows Roy Cadenhead’s journey from his rural Georgia upbringing hunting on his family’s farm to his enlistment in the Marines in June of 1943. Leaving his family behind, Cadenhead shares his memories of Iwo Jima and how he came to terms with the fact the Marines were training him to be a killer.
Originally airing in 2016, this documentary profiles one of the greatest golfers of all time who captured the heart of a nation struggling with the Great Depression. Bobby Jones left a legacy much greater than the sport which gave him fame as the co-founder of the Augusta National Golf Club and is remembered by those who knew him as one of the most decent, humble men they ever knew.

During the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ ceremony on May 16 in Atlanta, GPB was recognized with 11 Emmys.

STEAM-Based Program Teaches Students About Challenges Faced by Georgia Farmers
Georgia’s top teams for 2026 NASEF (Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federations) Farmcraft have been crowned. The free, immersive STEAM-based program explores the challenges faced by agricultural producers and distributors in Georgia and around the world in a custom Minecraft game. Students created farm systems that balance real agricultural demands: food production, land use and environmental sustainability.
