Time For A Diagnosis For Memory Issues? Three Answers From Kyle Brunen, Georgia Memory Net Project Director
Though hundreds of thousands of Georgians say they’ve noticed signs of memory loss or cognitive impairment, the majority haven’t received a diagnosis for those symptoms. We asked Georgia Memory Net’s Kyle Brunen three questions about how, and why, to get a referral for diagnosis.

In the past, it could take Georgians over a year to get an appointment for Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Has that changed?

How do Georgians get a referral to Georgia Memory Net for accelerated and accurate diagnosis?

What are the benefits of diagnosis?
The landscape is changing but there’s still a lack of cognitive neurologists to help patients with cognitive decline and memory loss. Worse still, the majority of these providers are typically clustered in large cities, which creates access barriers for rural areas. Since 2018, we have been building the Georgia Memory Net (GMN) to meet this need for early diagnosis and treatment. With funding and support from the state, we have established seven GMN Memory Assessment Clinics throughout Georgia, oftentimes reducing wait times from months or years to days or weeks.
If you or a family member are struggling with symptoms of memory loss, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider (PCP). If your provider decides that a more comprehensive assessment is needed, they can refer a patient to GMN with a simple form.
An early and accurate diagnosis is crucial. Identifying the specific type of cognitive impairment can lead to more appropriate and customized care. New therapies are here to help slow the progression of cognitive decline, but they are only effective for some patients who are identified early in the stage of disease progression.

T
he acclaimed series All Creatures Great and Small, based on the bestselling memoirs by veterinarian James Herriot, returns this month as MASTERPIECE presents the fourth season Sundays at 9 p.m. January 7 - February 18.
Set in the spring of 1940, Season 4 begins with Europe at war and the community in Darrowby pulling together more than ever before. Happily married, James and Helen begin to think about their future despite the looming possibility that James could be called to serve.

With Tristan away serving, Skeldale House is busier than ever, so an exhausted James hires a student vet, Richard Carmody, as an extra set of hands to help around the practice. Things don’t work out quite as James expects, and Carmody is challenged with learning how to be a vet outside of his books, as illness sets in amongst a herd on a community farm. Siegfried also has his own ideas about bringing a method to their madness at the practice, so they bring in Miss Harbottle, an experienced bookkeeper. As the season progresses, Richard Anderson finds himself in need of help, so Helen returns to Heston Grange. However, buried family secrets threaten to tear their relationship apart as Richard refuses to let her share in tasks on the farm. I get up, walk the dog, and start listening during Morning Edition for the first hour of my day. I listen to GPB Radio on WUGA FM so I can pick up the news on the hour, and I turn it up for the music programming. I have also used the GPB Classical stream on my desktop. How has GPB kept you informed or helped you make decisions? As a member of my church, I work with Habitat for Humanity and Family Promise for women and children in crisis and families who are displaced, and the Athens News Matters program provides valuable information on who the decision makers are for advocacy efforts and building lines of communication around the work. Why is GPB a part of your philanthropic legacy? I’ve always tried to support what we believe in. My first pledge was in 1977 to support the public media stations in Wisconsin. When we moved to Pennsylvania, the public media stations were just getting started, and we supported what served us as a commitment to making it last. After moving to Georgia, and now that I am more financially free, I have gradually increased my share of the cost to help GPB move into the future and continue to be the service and clear honest voice it has been.

Be My Neighbor Day Features PBS KIDS Favorite Daniel Tiger and Community Partners Including Georgia Public Library Service, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and More
I
t was a beautiful day in the neighborhood, with more than 600 people braving the cold, rainy weather to meet Daniel Tiger at The Home Depot Backyard in Atlanta during GPB’s annual, free Be My Neighbor Day community event held in November.
Themed around the popular PBS KIDS show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, which was inspired by the iconic Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the event featured activities designed to help children learn about their community and the importance of being a kind and caring neighbor. Kids and grown-ups alike enjoyed visiting a pop-up library from Georgia Public Library Service, creating a neighborhood garden with Compassionate Atlanta, planning balanced meals with Atlanta Community Food Bank, and meeting community helpers from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, MARTA and the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.

oes your child thrill in writing or telling stories? This is their opportunity to have a story published on GPB’s website! Encourage them to enter the PBS KIDS Writers Contest for Georgia students in kindergarten through
third grade. We will provide all the resources you need, including activity sheets and checklists to spark inspiration during the brainstorming process. The contest launches January 17, and the deadline for submission is April 12. Stories can be fact or fiction, poetry or graphic novel. They will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations. Winners will receive a prize pack and their stories will be featured on gpb.org.
