CULTURAL ENTHUSIASTS Europe's deep cultural layers, without the crowds. 2.5–3 days · 2 nights | Old Town heritage · Jewish Vilnius · Užupis
One of Europe's most culturally layered capitals, shaped by an extraordinary cast of rulers — Italian Sforzas, Hungarian Báthorys, Swedish Vasas. For centuries Vilnius was part of one shared state, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth — a union still visible across the Old Town's churches, courtyards and civic halls. Their legacies meet in a UNESCO-listed Old Town where Baroque churches, multicultural heritage and a living creative scene sit side by side — with the depth of a major European capital, and none of the queues.

1 DAY
OLD TOWN HERITAGE WALK
Morning
Guided Old Town heritage walk. Vilnius Cathedral, the Gate of Dawn, Town Hall and St. Anne’s — the largest Baroque Old Town in Central-Eastern Europe, read through the rulers — and the shared Commonwealth history with Poland — who shaped it.
Lunch
Afternoon
Kristoforas, Rotonda, Grey or Meating Room.
University courtyards & treasures. Vilnius University’s ensemble of thirteen linked courtyards and the frescoed Smuglevičius Hall of the oldest library in the region, and the panorama from St. Johns’ bell tower.
Optional: the Church Heritage Museum, home to the Vilnius Cathedral treasury — and, since July 2026, to “Hidden Within”, the royal burial insignia long thought lost. The funerary crowns, sceptre and orb of Alexander Jagiellon, Elizabeth of Austria and Barbara Radziwiłł surfaced in 1931, were hidden in the crypt walls in 1939 and stayed missing for almost a century — until December 2024. Most of Poland’s own regalia vanished in the 18th century, which is why this find made news far beyond Lithuania.
Optional add-on beyond the Old Town: St. Peter & Paul’s Church in Antakalnis, a short ride from the centre, with some 2,000 stucco figures inside.
Evening
Dinner. Historical Lithuanian cuisine in a historic setting — Lokys, Ertlio Namas or Neringa Restaurant.

LAYERED HERITAGE: JEWISH VILNIUS & UŽUPIS
Morning
Jewish heritage walk. Sites tied to “the Jerusalem of Lithuania” — the Glass Quarter, the synagogues and Vilna Gaon history — told as a living part of the city’s story, not a museum piece.
Optional: the Jewish Information Centre, where a wartime hideout — a malina — is still there behind the wall; the Museum of the Culture and Identity of Lithuanian Jews; or the Samuel Bak Museum.
Lunch
Beigelistai, Baleboste — traditional Litvak cooking — or Fire Place pitarija for shakshuka and hummus.
Afternoon
Užupis district. The self-declared artists’ republic: galleries, studios and street art in a former industrial quarter that still feels lived-in, not staged for visitors. Must stop — the Užupis Constitution on the wall of Paupio street.
Worth a stop on the way: the Bagel Shop (Beigelių krautuvėlė) for a warm bagel and a piece of Litvak baking history.
Evening
Heritage-and-modern dining. A restaurant reinterpreting Lithuanian classics through a contemporary lens — 14Horses (Michelin Bib Gourmand) — or Užupis classics: Le Travi (Italian family restaurant), Prie Angelo or the family-run Paupio 12.

ROYAL VILNIUS & TRAKAI
Morning
Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The rebuilt royal residence and the story of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — shared heritage with Poland’s own royal history.
Late morning
“Secret Love” audio guide. The royal love story the court tried to stop: Sigismund Augustus, the last of the Jagiellons, married Barbora Radziwiłł in secret, defended the marriage against his own mother and the Polish nobility, and had her crowned queen. She died two years later, aged 28. About an hour on foot between the Palace and the Cathedral — where her burial crown is now on display. Optional: visit Gediminas Tower, the Cathedral Bell Tower, the Cathedral crypts, the Castellans’ House, or the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in the former KGB prison.
Lunch
A duke-like table at Valdovai, or afternoon tea at Grand Hotel Vilnius, Curio Collection by Hilton.
Afternoon
Trakai: castle, lake and kibinai. Thirty minutes from the centre by private transfer: the red-brick Island Castle on Lake Galvė, the only one of its kind in Eastern Europe, and the seat from which Grand Duke Vytautas ran an empire reaching the Black Sea. He also brought the Karaim community here in the 14th century — they are still baking kibinai six hundred years on. A guided castle tour, a cruise around the island and a kibinai tasting fit into one afternoon, and several places run a workshop where the group folds its own.
SOUVENIRS TO TAKE HOME
Themed and easy to pack: Užupis Republic souvenirs from the district’s own shops, Litvak-themed prints and treats from the Bagel Shop, Grand Duchy motifs from the Palace shop. The Vilnius Tourist Information Centre stocks the “Secret Love” line and official city souvenirs, and Local House has a wide choice of Lithuanian-made pieces.
