It gives me great pleasure to bring you this edition of the GOPIO International News for July. Before anything else, I would like to thank each of you for your continued involvement and for taking the time to submit articles, updates, and contributions to this bulletin. Your participation is what keeps our international platform active, relevant, and connected, spanning countries, chapters, and communities.

This month, we have received valuable input from many of our members. However, we also want to ensure everyone is fully aware of the process for article inclusion, so that your efforts can be reflected in the final bulletin without unnecessary delay.

GOPIO organizes webinar on Diaspora Indians Aging Gracefully

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO International) hosted its June 2026 webinar, “Diaspora Indians – Aging Gracefully,” on June 13th, 2026. Held virtually, the webinar brought together service providers to Diaspora seniors, Ayurvedic and Yoga professionals, and dietician/ nutritionist as speakers from around the USA.

GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Abraham Thomas welcomed participants and highlighted the organization's global reach and advocacy for the Indian diaspora and its achievements

in promoting dual nationality.

GOPIO International President Mr. Prakash Shah mentioned about GOPIO’s monthly webinars and informed about a biennial convention to be held at Garware Club in Mumbai, India, on December 18 through 20, 2026.

Mr. Mukund Mehta, President of India Home, Inc. (Queens, New York City) and Chair, GOPIO Council on Seniors was the moderator. He described previous monthly webinars very informative and interesting.

The distinguished panel of speakers included Dr.

Vasundhara Kalasapudi, Founder and Executive Director of India Home; Dr. Jaya Daptardar, Ayurvedic doctor and Healthcare Executive; Ms. Preeti Singh, Non-profit leader and Program Director of SASA, a service of the Ektaa Center, Irvine, California, and CoChair, GOPIO Council of Seniors; Ms. Rita Batheja, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist with Integrative and Functional Medicine; and Mr. Tirlok Malik, Emee nominated Filmmaker and Founder of Happy Life Yoga and Ayurveda Wellness.

GOPIO CHAPTERS OF SO-CAL CELEBRATE 250TH INDEPENDENCE DAY OF USA

To Celebrate 250th Independence Day of USA GOPIO-United on July 05, 2026 brought together community leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Indian American community in a vibrant tribute

to the enduring friendship between India and the United States.

The program commenced with Kewal Kanda, Vice President of GOPIOInternational, welcoming the audience and speaking about the importance of unity in diversity while

expressing gratitude to the United States for the opportunities it has provided to generations of immigrants. He also shared an overview of GOPIO International and introduced Charu Shivakumar as the Master of Ceremonies. Charu formally welcomed the audience and guided

the proceedings throughout the event. The Presidents of GOPIO-Los Angeles, GOPIOOrange County, GOPIO-Inland Empire, GOPIO-San Gabriel Valley, and GOPIO-South Bay then introduced their respective chapter leadership teams.

The ceremony continued with a stirring rendition of the U.S. National Anthem performed by Aarti Garg. Seven-year-old Riju Jain delivered a heartfelt performance of the iconic song "This Land Is My Land, This Land Is Your Land," beautifully capturing the spirit of unity, inclusivity, and patriotism. The performance served as a fitting tribute to America's 250-year milestone and celebrated the nation's shared values.

Kewal Kanda then introduced Consul Kulwant Singh, Consulate General of India, Los Angeles, who addressed the gathering. He praised GOPIO-United for celebrating this historic occasion and remarked, "It is wonderful to see the Indian diaspora organization GOPIO celebrating this important milestone. You are the living bridge between India and the United States."

A Posthumous Felicitation was presented in honor of the late Dr. Inder Singh by Kewal Kanda, Ashok Madan, V.J. Singh, Simi Singh, and Consul Kulwant Singh, recognizing his lasting contributions to the community. The event also featured Lifetime Recognition Awards, to Hark VASA and to Kewal Kanda, in recognition of their exceptional dedication

and service to the community.

Outstanding community service awards were presented to Dr. K. J. Srinivasa – Consul General of India, Los Angeles, Navneet Chugh – Managing Director of Chugh LLP, and Harbhajan Samra – The Okra King of North America for their significant contributions to the community.

The educational segment of the program featured several insightful presentations. Hasmukh Modi delivered a

presentation, followed by Dr. Manorama Gupta, who spoke on the Contribution of Women in Shaping America's Growth. The GOPIO-San Gabriel Valley Youth Group presented "Leaders Who Lead by Example in the U.S." Baljinder Tahim recited a patriotic poem titled "Relationship: Modi-Trump Ki Jodi Ko Salam." Vasu Pawar spoke on "Freedom and Independence in the 21st Century," while Amrit Bhandari discussed the Significance of Establishing

Collaboration with American Elected Officials. Yatri Shukla presented the History of American Independence, followed by a presentation from Aparna Hande. Dr. Pradip Shukla concluded the educational sessions by highlighting the Contributions of Indians to the Rise of America. The celebration continued with vibrant cultural performances, including a dance coordinated by Amrit Bhandari and an Executive Committee dance led by Surekha Modi, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Indian American community. The elegant décor and cultural presentation were curated by Surekha Modi. Ashok Patnaik, Commissioner of the city of Cerritos, and Dr. Sukrit Mukherjee, Commissioner of the City of Cypress, were also recognized for their dedicated public service and valuable contributions to the growth, prosperity, and civic development of the United States and the local community. Pramod Kamdar a founding member of GOPIO, who came from San Diego to participate in the event was also recognized for his community service.

Charu Shivakumar, Chair of the GOPIO Women's Council, is a dedicated community leader committed to empowering women and strengthening the global Indian diaspora through leadership, education, and meaningful collaboration. As the organizer of this event, her vision is to create an inclusive platform that inspires dialogue, celebrates

achievements, and fosters lasting connections among professionals and community leaders worldwide. Under her leadership, GOPIO Women's Council continues to champion initiatives that promote service, advocacy, and opportunities for women to lead and make a positive impact across communities

Late Dr. Inder Singh was posthumously honored with the GOPIO International Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing more than 50 years of extraordinary

community service, visionary leadership, and institution building. The award was graciously accepted on his behalf by his son, VJ Singh, and daughter-in-law, Simi Singh. From immigrating to the United States in 1968 to becoming one of the world’s most respected leaders of the Indian diaspora, Inder Singh dedicated his life to strengthening relationships between the Indian and American communities. As President and CEO of GOPIO International (2004–2009)

and later Chairman (2009–2016s. He championed immigration and civil rights, organized international conventions, mentored emerging leaders, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for deserving students, and devoted his retirement entirely to volunteer service. His life’s work was never about personal recognition—it was about creating opportunities for others, building institutions that would endure, and strengthening the bonds between India and the United States.

Kewal Kanda was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional leadership, distinguished

career, and lifelong dedication to community service.

After immigrating from Punjab, India, to the United States in 1976, he built a successful career at The Boeing Company, retiring

as a Manager in Production Planning after nearly 27 years while earning both a B.S. in Business Management and an MBA. He is the Vice President and former Treasurer of GOPIO International, Founder

President and current Trustee of GOPIO Los Angeles, and Chairman of the United Indian Associations of Southern California (UIASC). He also played a key role in organizing the 2015 Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Los Angeles. Known for his humility and selfless service, Mr. Kanda has dedicated countless hours to helping the Indian community with OCI cards, passports, and visas, while supporting numerous community organizations. His remarkable legacy of leadership, compassion, and service continues to inspire generations across the Indian diaspora.

Hark Vasa was honored

with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary entrepreneurial journey and lasting contributions to the United States. He built a successful CRM software company that employed hundreds of professionals, including more than 50 software engineers from India, across offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, and India. A serial entrepreneur, Hark Vasa also owned and operated dozens of hotels, creating employment opportunities for more than 1,000 people. His remarkable career stands as an inspiring example of innovation, leadership, and the invaluable

contributions of Indian Americans to the nation's prosperity.

Hasmukh Modi spoke about “How Indian Diaspora is changing American Landscape” in commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the United States, emphasizing the values of inclusivity, unity, and shared pride in the nation. He highlighted the significant contributions of Indian Americans to the U.S. economy, including their leadership with 16 Fortune 500 CEOs. His presentation underscored how the Indian diaspora has played a vital role in America's economic growth, innovation, cultural

diversity, and the continued success of the India–U.S. corridor.

Dr. Manorama Gupta delivered an inspiring presentation on the remarkable contributions of women who shaped American history, from the Revolutionary Era to modern-day trailblazers. She highlighted the courage and leadership of Mercy Otis Warren, Sarah Bradlee Fulton, Margaret Cochran Corbin, and Sybil Ludington, She also recognized the achievements of modern icons, including Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian origin in space, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi.

Navneet Chugh, Founder of Chugh LLP, spoke about the significant contributions of Indian Americans to the United States' economy, highlighting their role in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, business growth, and job creation. He emphasized how the Indian American community has been instrumental in strengthening America's prosperity, economic development, and global competitiveness through leadership across diverse industries and continued investment in the nation's future.

Yatri Shukla presented a thoughtful overview of the history of American Independence, drawing compelling parallels between the American Revolution and India's Satyagraha and Swatantarata Sangram.

She highlighted how both democracies fought for freedom from British rule, and the audience appreciated her insightful comparison of the heroes of the American Revolution with Indian freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

The celebration was attended by several distinguished military veterans and community

leaders. Among them were Major Gurjeet Singh and Malvinder Kaur. Also, in attendance were, Captain Dev Bhasin, a retired officer of the Gorkha Regiment and a 1971 Indo-Pak War veteran, Suman Bhasin, Squadron Leader Ajay Chauhan, a former Indian Air Force pilot who also served as Aide-de-Camp to the President of India, Captain Aparna Hande who served in the Army Nursing Corps, Captain

Kuldip Bali a veteran of the Artillery Regiment (Gunners), Second Lieutenant Rupali Tilve a U.S. Army veteran, and Captain R. D. Singh, accompanied by Neeru Singh. They were all recognized for their distinguished service in the military.

The GOPIO San Gabriel Valley Youth Team, represented by Jasmin Shivakumarn and Megha Umasankar, delivered an inspiring presentation titled "Leaders Who Lead by Example in America," highlighting the importance of leadership, service, and civic responsibility.

Vasu Pawar spoke on "Freedom and Independence in

the 21st Century," emphasizing that true independence comes through knowledge, innovation, and self-reliance. She encouraged the younger generation to become job creators rather than job seekers, inspiring the audience to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation.

The cultural program showcased a vibrant celebration of music and dance. Registration for the event was efficiently coordinated by Rani Kuusto. A lively dance performance to "Party in the USA," choreographed by Surekha Modi, celebrated America's 250th Independence anniversary and energized the

audience. This was followed by a musical performance by Siddharth Pathak. Additional cultural performances included a dance coordinated by Amrit Bhandari, an Executive Committee dance led by Surekha Modi, melodious songs by Rose Muralikrishnamurthy, and performances by the Golden Girls, led by Amy Ren, reflecting the rich diversity and cultural spirit of the Indian American community. Socal Channel was the media partner of the event.

The memorable celebration concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks and a sumptuous lunch by Tandoor, Cuisine of India.

Indian Diaspora Center Hosts 2026 Annual Symposium on the topic,

Indian TV – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Elmont, NY, USA – June 30, 2025 – The Indian Diaspora Center at the Dr. Thomas Abraham Library, in collaboration with the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin–Manhattan Chapter (GOPIOManhattan) and the Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center, hosted its 2026 Annual Symposium on Sunday, June 28, at the Kerala Center in Elmont, New York.

The symposium, "Indian Television – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," brought together distinguished

veterans of Indian television and journalism for an engaging panel discussion and interactive session.

The panel featured former Doordarshan news presenters Sheila Chaman and Ramu Damodaran, former Indian Ambassador T.P. Sreenivasan, who currently hosts the television program Around and Inside on Asianet TV, and Sree Sreenivasan, noted digital media expert, journalism professor, host of the Sunday NYT Readalong, and co-founder of the South Asian Journalists

Association (SAJA).

The program began with a networking tea and coffee reception, followed by opening remarks from Kerala Center President Alex Esthappan, who welcomed the audience and expressed pride in the Kerala Center serving as the home of the Dr. Thomas Abraham Library and the Indian Diaspora Center.

Dr. Thomas Abraham, Founder of the Indian Diaspora Center, spoke about the Center's mission to preserve the history, achievements, and

contributions of the global Indian diaspora. He noted that the Center houses an extensive collection of books and publications on the Indian diaspora, alongside works on India and Indian civilization. Dr. Abraham also highlighted GOPIO's initiative to establish India Collections in public libraries across the New York metropolitan area through book donations from the Consulate General of India and members of the Indian American community, making information on India and its diaspora more accessible to the public.

As June 28 also marked the birth anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, the symposium began with a special tribute delivered by Ramu Damodaran, who had served in Prime Minister Rao's office before joining the United Nations.

Paying tribute to the late Prime Minister, Damodaran observed, "P. V. Narasimha Rao is rightly remembered for launching India's economic liberalization. Equally significant, however, was his commitment to liberalizing the human mind. One visible expression of that vision was opening Indian television to new channels and new opportunities, giving viewers a genuine choice in what they could watch."

Damodaran noted that Prime Minister Rao recognized India's greatest strength as its vast reservoir of human talent and

He believed that, irrespective of politics, India should learn from that example by creating an environment where talent could flourish and innovation could thrive."

Economic liberalization, he said, was driven by the belief that Indians, both at home and abroad, should have greater opportunities to innovate, compete, and realize their full potential. By opening the economy and expanding the media landscape, Rao helped lay the foundation for India's emergence as a global center for technology, entrepreneurship, and communications.

Reflecting on the transformation of Indian television, Damodaran remarked that the evolution from a single government broadcaster to a vibrant and diverse media ecosystem mirrored India's broader

economic and social transformation unleashed by the reforms of the early 1990s.

Moderator Sree Sreenivasan then introduced veteran Doordarshan news presenter Sheila Chaman, who spoke about her recently published book, Doordarshan Diaries: The Golden Era of Television. The book, co-authored by ten former Doordarshan colleagues from different departments, chronicles the evolution of Indian television through the experiences of those who helped shape its formative years. Chaman described it as both a nostalgic memoir and an important historical record of India's pioneering television era.

Recalling the early years of broadcasting, Chaman explained that news presenters wrote or edited much of their own scripts and delivered them entirely from memory, as teleprompters and autocue systems did not yet exist. The demanding process required exceptional preparation, discipline, and memory—qualities that defined the professionalism of Doordarshan's early broadcasters.

She also presented a PowerPoint featuring photographs and archival material from the book, tracing the journey of Indian television from its experimental launch in 1959 to the introduction of color broadcasts during the 1982 Asian Games.

Interwoven with this history was her own career at Doordarshan, where she had the opportunity to interview national leaders, interact with renowned film personalities, and serve as a master of ceremonies at numerous national and international events.

Inviting the panelists to reflect on the symposium's theme, "Indian Television – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," moderator Sree Sreenivasan led a lively discussion on the remarkable transformation of the Indian television industry.

Chaman noted that Doordarshan, India's pioneering public broadcaster, began modestly on September 15, 1959, with a small transmitter and a makeshift studio, broadcasting only a few hours a day. Programming initially focused on

education, agriculture, literacy, and national development. A major milestone came on August 15, 1982, when color television was introduced in time for the Asian Games, ushering in a new era of technological advancement and dramatically expanding television's reach across the country.

She explained that India's television landscape underwent a fundamental transformation after the economic reforms of the early 1990s. The arrival of CNN during the Gulf War, followed by private broadcasters such as Star TV, Zee TV, and Sony, ended Doordarshan's monopoly and ushered in an era of multi-channel broadcasting and unprecedented viewer choice. Today, India has more than 900 satellite television channels, while Doordarshan itself operates

around 50 channels serving diverse regional and national audiences. Citing a study by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Chaman noted that India's television audience is projected to grow to nearly 1.03 billion viewers by 2029, underscoring television's continuing relevance despite the rapid growth of digital media.

Former Ambassador T. P. Sreenivasan reflected on his own unexpected journey into television after retiring from the Indian Foreign Service. "It is ironic," he remarked, "that the oldest member of this panel is speaking about the newest trends in television." He explained that he became an "accidental television journalist" at a time when regional news channels were expanding rapidly and creating new opportunities for informed public

He observed that one of the most significant developments in recent years has been the emergence of small, regional news channels. Although many began with modest resources—what he humorously described as "tea shop stations"—several have grown into influential media organizations, demonstrating that innovation and quality journalism can flourish even outside the large broadcast networks.

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Sreenivasan drew an interesting parallel between diplomacy and journalism. "Both professions," he said, "share a common purpose—to educate and inform the public. Diplomats do it discreetly; journalists do it publicly."

On the symposium topic, Damodaran said, “If there is one element which has

transformed television in the last 35 years, it is the emergence of accountability and that anyone who appears on television needs to be prepared to justify actions taken, or not taken, and place that justification before the people of India.”

“It is clear that audiences should demand better coverage as democracy in India and abroad depends on it,” Damodaran added. During the open discussion, the speakers lamented the way Indian TV news has become all about sensationalism with competing, exaggerated headlines and news items. The shouting matches are a disservice to the audience. In the early days when Chaman and Damodaran were newsreaders it was a very different atmosphere. Amb. Sreenivasn pointed that while Kerala networks aren’t immune from the trends of the north, they are, on the whole, not filled

with shouting matches. He also spoke of the rise of individual news creators whose YouTube channels are huge hits.

“To have a chance to talk about the past, present and future of the richest, most diverse TV landscape in the world was exciting. Only GOPIO and Dr Thomas Abraham could conceive of and convene such an unusual discussion,” concluded Sree Sreenivasan, co-founder of Digimentors, who earlier in the day, hosted the 400th episode of his NYT Readalong show.

As a token of appreciation, the speakers were presented with a rare First Day Covers, canceled and released by the US Postal Service during the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York City in 1989, where GOPIO was founded. These collector’s item of US Postal Service’s First Day Cover featuring Mahatma Gandhi stamps, honored

the Indian diaspora and the historic global meet.

The symposium attracted a large audience of community leaders, media professionals, scholars, and members of the Indian American community, generating an engaging discussion on the remarkable evolution of Indian television and its future in the digital age. Among those in attendance were GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham, GOPIO International Council Chair for Seniors Mukund Mehta, Kerala Center Founder and GOPIO Life Member E. M. Stephen, GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary Ganesh Pager, Kerala Center Secretary Raju Thomas, along with numerous Life Members of GOPIO, the GOPIOManhattan Chapter, and the Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center.

GOPIO Manhattan Organizes College and Beyond Panel Discussion for High School Students

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Manhattan Chapter successfully hosted its highly anticipated "College and Beyond" Panel Discussion on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, New York. The event brought together students, parents, educators, young professionals, community leaders, and guests for an engaging afternoon of learning, mentorship, and career guidance. The program was designed to help students and young professionals navigate the evolving landscape of higher education, career planning,

internships, leadership development, networking, and professional success. The event received an overwhelming response from the community, with attendees actively participating throughout the session.

GOPIO Manhattan was honored to welcome an accomplished panel of professionals representing diverse industries and

career paths. The panel featured the following persons: Mihir Sanghavi, a senior engineering leader specializing in AI, machine learning, and large-scale software systems; Brian Thomas, a Junior at New York University Stren Schol of Business; Shashank Shamshabad, a public servant and recent graduate of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (MPA); Vinisha Patel, a second-year medical student at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine; and Dr. Sonia Sharma, distinguished Hindi language educator, scholar, author, and pioneer in Hindi language education in the United States.

GOPIO and Indian Consulate Celebrate International Day of Yoga 2026 Hosted by Filmmaker and Happy Yoga Life

GOPIO’s International Day of Yoga 2026 (IDY-2026) celebration hosted by Happy Life Yoga Speaker and Emmy Nominated Filmmaker Tirlok Malik on Saturday June 20, from 11.00 am –12.30 am (EST, US | Canada) was a resounding success.

This year, GOPIOManhattan joined hands with Consulate General of India in New York with GOPIO-Manhattan, Happy Life Yoga, The Indian Panorama & Indian American Forum, hosted a highly interactive and informative virtual Yoga event featuring experts and speakers from various walks of life. GOPIO-Manhattan started Happy Life Yoga in 2021 during Covid on the Zoom. GOPIO International and its chapters have cooperated and participated with the Indian Missions in the celebration all over the world and GOPIO chapters have also organized sessions with their own initiatives in many cities.

Yoga Day Celebration on the Zoom has been continued for the last five years since GOPIO

could bring speakers and participants from all over the world together. The Session on the Zoom had light Yoga exercise while sitting in the chair, meditation and on breathing and of course, a

lot of laughter and was entertaining as well.

The Indian Consulate in New York and the Consul General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan were represented by Ms Rajlakshmi Kadam, Consul of Trade. In her message Consul Kadam welcomed the diaspora and encouraged them to practice Yoga in their day-to-day lives.

GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham, who serves as an advisor to GOPIOManhattan, in his welcome address, spoke about the objectives of GOPIO and urged those who are

not members yet to join the GOPIO International organization or a nearby chapter.

The theme for this year was centered on the universal question: “How to stay positive and move forward from past mistakes to live a happier life for oneself”

International Happy Life Yoga 2026 offered participants a warm, entertaining, and deeply human experience that blends India’s wellness heritage with practical tools for modern life.

Executive Vice President Bhavya Gupta concluded the virtual Yoga Day Celebration with Vote of Thanks and conveyed greetings from GOPIO Manhattan President Prof Raj Vangapapy.

GOPIO-Manhattan, in accordance with its mission to serve the larger society and those in need, has taken several initiatives since its founding in 2020. A Community Feeding is organized by the Chapter providing a vegetarian lunch for the homeless and needy at Tomkins Square Park in Manhattan on the last Monday of every month. The chapter appeals to the community to support the initiative by being a volunteer and/or a sponsor.

Crafting Passion Through Dance: A Legacy in Print

How Harmohan Singh Walia’s 4th Coffee Table Book Became a Tribute to Australia’s Indian Dance Community

On the morning of 19 June 2026, Parramatta’s Community Migrant Resource Centre was more than a venue. It was a stage. There, Harmohan Singh Walia launched his 4th coffee table book, Crafting Passion Through Dance, before a room of dignitaries, educators, dancers, and storytellers. The book was unveiled by Dr. S. Janakiraman, Consul General of India, Sydney; The Hon. Andrew Charlton MP, Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy; Cr. Sameer Pandey; Ms Melissa

Monteiro, CEO of CMRC; Dr. Shan Ruprai, CEO of the Australian Institute of Business Improvement and Juror for the Prime Minister’s Office, Dubai; Harinder Kaur OAM & Maninder Singh of the Harman Foundation; and Anuj Kulshrestha of Hindi Gaurav & Opera Events. Veteran broadcaster Kumud Merani held the room together as MC.

In his welcome address, Mr. Walia said each of his books had been a journey. This one, however, “hit different.” “Dance isn’t just steps and music,” he told the audience. “It’s discipline. It’s expression. It’s a story told without words.”

Crafting Passion Through Dance is Mr. Walia’s curated portrait of Indian dance schools and academies across Australia. Through intricate footwork, graceful lines, and expressive gesture, the book traces how students train in multiple styles while quietly shaping Australian culture. Though there are hundreds of academies nationwide, this volume brings together a representative sample from every state - a deliberate cross-section, not an exhaustive list.

Across its pages are 30+ schools, 500+ dancers, and one shared obsession: the

craft. The book lingers on what usually goes unseen: teachers working beyond hours, students rehearsing until their feet ache, studios that become a second home. It captures the sweat, the grace, the backstage chaos, and the exact moment a child lands their first spin. “Seeing students and their teams in print is to honour the dedication they bring every day,” Mr. Walia said. “For a young dancer, holding this book is a lifelong memory - to see yourself, your teacher, and the passion you share with family and friends.”

Beyond the 30 school features, the book closes with a 24-page gallery of selected performances from events where Mr. Walia was invited as guest. If your organisation hosted him, your dancers may already be in it.

The launch itself reflected that spirit. A teaser by

Harjot Singh of KH Brothers Films opened the morning, followed by a Bollywood fusion performance by Dr. Tanima Banerjee - a reminder that dance lives between tradition and reinvention.

Mr. Walia’s purpose is archival as much as artistic. “These books create awareness for future generations,” he said. “To understand our society, their place within it, and to

develop a sense of culture, skill, contribution, and achievement.”

If dance has ever moved you - even once - this book is an invitation. You’ll find your teacher in the margins, your studio in the light, and that familiar lift you feel when the music begins.

May it inspire more students to begin, more teachers to persist, and all of us to notice the art behind every move.

GOPIO Brisbane announces showstopper, Kavya Limaye, on the grand poster launch

Sharmeen Thomas, as MC, began the evening at the Indian Brothers Annerley venue by requesting that all attendees accord a standing ovation to Usha Chandra, following her award of the OAM. Organised by GOPIO Brisbane, the event also marked an important moment in Indian Day Fair history with the announcement that this year’s showstopper would be Kavya Limaye, the first female showstopper in Indian Day Fair (IDF) history. The committee also introduced a special

showstopper segment within the VIP proceedings, noting that VIPs normally missed out on this part of the programme.

Kavya Limaye is set to stage two segments throughout the night. She would first appear as a curtain-raiser at the VIP formal segment and then return for the grand finale as the showstopper did in previous years. Limaye, a high-profile and awardwinning Indian Idol artist, had previously performed at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Rahat Fateh Ali

Khan, and she is expected to bring her high-energy performance to both segments.

The event continued with a strong and enthusiastic turnout, creating a clearly positive atmosphere from the time guests arrived. An engaging meet-and-greet welcomed attendees, and the proceedings then moved into presentations and formal acknowledgements. With AV support provided by Globenet Realty, the programme remained wellsupported for speakers and stage cues, ensuring that the

video and slide segments delivered their intended impact.

Umesh Chandra delivered a presentation on GOPIO International, which helped set the context for the poster launch and announcements that followed. The poster launch segment then proceeded smoothly, and the showstopper was introduced through a dedicated video presentation designed to spotlight and introduce Kavya Limaye to the gathering. Deepak Bhandari delivered the promoters’ remarks, and Usha Chandra later offered the vote of thanks along with sponsors’ acknowledgement. The evening concluded on a celebratory note, with photos with the posters as part of the wrap-up, and the overall event left attendees describing it as an enjoyable, well-paced community evening.

Looking forward, our focus in the coming months will be on chapter compliance. While we recognise that compliance can be challenging—especially for chapters operating under different regulatory and legal requirements in their local jurisdictions—it is vital to the long-term survival, stability, and effectiveness of our International body.

Because GOPIO International operates globally, chapters may need to align certain provisions of their constitutions with local laws and regulations. We are flexible with local adjustments, but we ask every chapter to ensure that the key components of our constitution are upheld and respected. Chapter compliance is not just a formality. It ensures transparency, uniformity in governance principles, credibility, and protection of the organisation’s structure and reputation.

Another important area we must address is event endorsement. Where events are organised by or with involvement connected to GOPIO International / GOPIO International team, chapters and organisers must:

Notify in advance about the plan. Seek prior approval before proceeding.

This ensures that our involvement is responsible, organised, and aligned with International expectations and standards.

We also emphasise that any involvement must be governed by written documentation, including financial risk management details and clearly defined terms and conditions.

Indemnifying GOPIO International

Above all, the good name of GOPIO International must be upheld and protected at all times. Our brand, values, and reputation are built over years through trust, integrity, and community responsibility—so every event must reflect this standard.

Let us all work together to ensure that GOPIO International continues to develop a stronger presence, a more unified approach, and a consistently positive public image.
